Once upon a time, our world was blessed by the Valkyrie, a goddess of war whose fleeting beauty shone brilliantly on the battlefield. Her campaign against the wretched Demon King proved victorious, with the evil being sealed away by the beautiful warrior.
Many years later, the young King Alnoa has just returned home after staving off another invasion of his homeland. Before he can even change out of his battle attire, his sister Cecilia comes to him with startling Sharon and Lesfina, both princesses and Divas blessed with the power of the Valkyrie, seek his hand in marriage.
Alnoa isn’t fond of the idea, but his feelings mean little in the face of politics. He arranges to meet them one month apart and will choose one to be his bride, ushering in a new era for his kingdom.
Now it’s time for our young king to meet the first candidate. He awaits her at the castle gates... But wait! Both candidates showed up at the same time!?
I'm not the biggest battle harem fan, so this definitely isn't my digs. But it has some great art, and also some ok world building.
The basic setup is: Guy needs to strengthen his weak kingdom. Marrying bridal candidates that happen to also be Diva warriors from surrounding nations is proposed. Harem hijinks ensue.
Our characters in this story are fairly cliche. We've got a crazy bro-con who wants to get married (although, her being in a position to change the laws of the country and the minds of the church to be with her favorite demon lord are unique). We've got a maid who tries her best to teasingly attract our main character's attention. We got a quiet blue haired gal with an infatuation for some reason to Al (that doesn't get fully explained in this volume). And we have the red head cover gal, the Tsundere assassin, Sharon. Some other characters get thrown in the mix later on, like the information gathering Imouto type character also infatuated with Al, and her brother, a major strategist for the country.
The interactions between the cast are a bit repetitive throughout, which, even when given a story reason, remain stale for the reader to have to go through time and again. Half the scenes are 'One girl makes a move, other gets upset, they burn down the house with their powers; repeat ad nauseum'. Basically, if your ideal story moves the plot forward quickly, this may not be for you currently. There's some development for a character later on, but I'm unconvinced it will make much of an effect on these interactions going forward since the character still shows a desire to fall back into their trope in the final scene.
On the battle front, there are some magic spells, but they're fairly basic (Ice, Fire, Dark). The Divas are the "magical girl" type element of the series, although their transformations aren't quite as dramatic as a typical magical girl. The enhancements are the result of "Heavenly Surge", which, like it sounds, is when characters buff up their powers after intense romantic interactions... Yeah.
Like your typical fantasy fare, we're dealing in plots involving slavery and land acquisition. I did kind of enjoy that the hero's ideal was questioned a bit, though not enough to flip the plot upside down or anything. If you're hoping for any sort of mega twists, there is nothing of that sort yet. In many ways, this does remind me of Daimao, between the whole "demon lord vessel" being a generally good guy with principles, to his mates ranging from crazy in love (Fujiko = Feena here) to manipulative planner (Eiko = SPOILER character) to would be assassin (Junko = Sharon). Daimao did a good job of incorporating other cast that aren't just a member of the MC's harem, and making the initially plot derailing characters less so as time went on. Hopefully we see a similar trajectory here.
I'd still recommend buying this one to support getting new licenses from this LN upstart if you're even somewhat interested in this type of story, but just personally, I can't say I really enjoyed this one too much. I was hoping it would have something that made it stand out a bunch, but it's pretty standard "demon lord harem" fare at this point. The series has 3 volumes out currently. At the start of the story, they talk about 7 Divas existing. We've met 3 in volume 1. I'm curious if we'll meet all 7, deal with their stories, and get a conclusion on the marriage front by the end of volume 3.
