An appropriately convoluted, dramatic, and touching ending to this fascinating gender bent riff on Faust. Beautiful art. Recommended!

Don't lose your head.

Cast free as the bells in the great belfry rang Johanna doesn't have much time left or body as the damage she suffered to find out where Mephistopheles's head has shrunk her even more. It is all go as allies and Johanna clash with the church so she can reassemble her demon (more or less) and by the end sacrifices will be made on both sides as the truth comes to bear its fruits.

As someone you enjoys the Ancient Magus' Bride I was glad to try this book put out by the same mangaka. While I really enjoyed it I can imagine 5 volumes is not an easy goal when you have several interesting characters, a quest, and a potentially immortal heroine facing off against a church trying to keep her away from the one that cursed her with immortality. Alas the final volume has come and having read it I am left with a little mystery and a basic story for the characters after the final clash which was satisfactory leading to a nice clean ending...although something bothers me about it and I am not sure why. So all in all whether it was the fantastic artwork, interesting concepts, or you like the characters like I do I hope you might give this 5 volumes series a try if you haven't already. :)

My fave part would have to be attack of the giant cat. Giant cat you say? Yes you will have to read to see for yourself. :)

I really liked this series and wish there'd been at least another volume. I want to read more but I also feel like I missed something at the end and I feel like that volume could explain it to me slowly lol. From the beginning we know the relationship between Mephisto and Johanna is a strange one, and this final volume is an expose into their past. There's an outcome to each individual story and I'm mostly satisfied with it.

This series was a fun little adventure. I really enjoyed this series all the way to the end.

Also, I think it's rather unusual for a manga's ending to be left open to interpretation like this. Since Johanna's soul was freed as a result of Mephistopheles breaking their contract, I'd like to think that he dragged her soul back out of hell so that they could be together.

Review for complete series

I usually like shorter and compact series but I feel as though Frau Faust would have needed to be at least twice as long as it actually is to deliver what it's trying to achieve. As a premise, this is a very interesting series - it's a gender flipped retelling auf Faust and will likely appeal to readers of Yamazaki's other work The Ancient Magus' Bride. It has the same dark undertones and folklore, loveable but also macabre characters and plenty of great artwork to go around, even if the character art itself doesn't appeal to me personally quite as much.

While the premise itself was a good, I found that everything moved too fast and a lot was left unexplained. Given all the other high ratings, perhaps I am just missing the point here but I didn't even understand most character's motivations. I don't understand Faust's motives nor what her exact relationship with the demon Mephisto was about - it is implied that were was romance from both sides yet we didn't get any glimpse into when or how that came about. I don't understand their contract and I don't understand all that Mephisto did afterwards. I never fully understood Lorenzo and Anastasia's situation - I understood that both siblings were trying to protect each other but I don't understand why their aunt felt the need to keep them in check in the first place - I kept waiting for some great reveal about that, especially given that Lorenzo always hides his face, another thing we never get an explanation for. Vito's main motivation seems to be that he wants to help Lorenzo but we never get to understand that to any particularly deep level either. I could go on and on about this for every other character.

It just feels like so much is missing which is a real shame because the idea and characters could have delivered something much better. The ending is also so vague, I have actually no idea what happened. I think I shall sign this off by saying that this series has simply left me confused. If anyone has answers to all my questions, I beg thee please to explain.

Today's manga post is on Frau Faust, Vol. 5 by Kore Yamazaki. It is 192 pages long and is published by Kodansha Comics. The cover has Faust and Mephistopheles on it. It is the fifth in the series, you need to have read the first four volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes retelling stories and clever plots. There is some mild foul language, no sex, and mild violence in this manga. The story is told from third person of the characters. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the manga- Reunions and Departures
With the help of Marion and Nico the homunculus, Johanna reaches the great belfry where Mephistopheles' head is kept. Johanna is nearly finished with the century-long game she's played with her demonic companion, but with Johanna's body slowly shrinking away and the church stopping at nothing to prevent her unholy reunion, will she accomplish her goal before it's too late?

Review- A interesting ending for a good series. Faust does get to Mephistopheles' head before the end of the one hundred years. What they were really playing at is never explained but in the end, that is not what really matters. What really matters is how Faust lived in those years. The lives she touched, the research she helped, and the guidance she gave, in particular to Marion. I would have liked to know more about demons and what Faust was really going after but I am still satisfied with the end.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

What a great ending to a great series! The series was short, but it was definitely worthy of a 5 star rating. I will say that it definitely requires time to absorb the lore and all of the nuance, but it is worth it. I feel like this series benefited from having a strict goal (finding all of Mephisto's body) so that it wasn't so jarring for the series to be so short. Unfortunately, I can't talk too much about this volume because there are HEAVY spoilers in this particular volume, but what I will say is that Yamazaki really ties everything together nicely in the end. I would say it is a "happy" ending, even though there is a lot of sadness as well. The characters are wonderful, the lore remains rich, the themes of gender and work continue and play nicely into understanding a key player in the series, and Faust is amazing as ever. Not much else I can say without spoilers, it was a great ending to a great series, definitely worth the wait to finish.

It's been a while I read the previous volumes so if there was some sort of weird holes in the story, I don't remember such, this was a fine retelling of Faust. There wasn't as much explanation for Faust and Mephistopheles' background as I expected, so it remained pretty murky. The ending was dramatic, as is fit for Faust story.

I felt some of the side characters were just kinda there, they could've been trimmed out easily and give more time for others instead. A couple of the supporting characters were interesting and would've gladly read more about them, namely Sarah and Nico. And the demon Mephisto.
I liked that in the end Anastasia came into her own too, having been just a pawn for the whole time.

Art is good. Thick blonde eyelashes (Faust's for example) kinda bother me though. That's not Yamazaki's fault, I rarely like that, no matter who draws.

More of a 3.5 star rating but I gave it 3 stars because the way that the ending was left to be interpreted, left me a bit confused.
I really liked how the series ended and how Marion surprisingly connects with Johanna’s past, which I thought was wonderful. The romances between certain characters also left me surprised. Overall, I’m glad that the characters got their happy endings and I kinda wish there was a 6th volume but, solely of short stories.

I never expect this kind of retelling from Dr. Faustus. When I read about him from Shakespeare, he sounded eccentric and tragic. This Faustus is more lovable and with all those supernatural surrounds her, she is as charismatic as ever. I love her bond with the devil and in some ways humans are scarier than the devil itself. 4 stars for this series. I kinda prefer this over Ancient Magus's Bride.

C'était une série originale et sympathique ! Un peu trop de queerbaiting à mon goût (tous les personnages codés/officiellement gay finissent seuls ou avec une personne d'un autre genre) mais j'ai passé un bon moment durant cette histoire.

I extremely enjoyed this series!
I've never heard of story of Faust until I borrowed the first book and a friend told me about it. I don't know how different the series is from the original, but I'm so glad I picked this up.

I was confused and somewhat sad to realize that this manga only has five volumes! On the other hand, it's nice to read a manga that has a set beginning, middle, and end.
