The Inheritance explores the extent to which we inherit responsibility for what our families pass down to us. This is a work of fiction (social fiction based loosely on the author's experience of discovering that an inheritance she had received could be traced to dispossessing the Ute Indians of their land in Colorado. What should one do? In the novel, after tracing the house she inherited from her grandmother to the selling of land stolen from the Ute Indians, Denise (the protagonist) must decide whether to stand up for her family or her convictions.
