Dead Things #3

Deranged Angels and Cannibal Hearts

Rate this book
Four months ago, Ember Lonergan made a decision that changed everything. She brought back a life, and it cost her a life in return. Only magic kept the pack from suffering the severe consequences of Ember’s rash decision. She thought the secret would stay buried forever. Josephine ensured them the spell would hold and the Grove would never know what they’d done.

But that was before Silas. Silas changed everything. He believes Ember is the only thing standing between him and the love he’s carried for over a century. He’s
determined to take everything she loves away from her, starting with her pack, and he has plenty of help. He’s got the original coven, he’s got Quinn, and he has a magic that rivals the gods.

The pack can only beat Silas by standing together, but that’s not as easy as it once was. People are keeping secrets, half the pack is crazy, and two of them are currently dead. Despite all of this, Ember still believes she can fix it, that she can save them all—she just needs more time. But just when she’s convinced she’s finally figured it all out, new players enter the game.

The pack of wolves and the family of reapers are back with vengeance and I’m rolling out of my fictitious grave just because this latest book is magnificently awesome. Deranged Angels and Cannibal Hearts is a definite must read!!!

Silas would do everything and anything to get Mace back. He loved him first, he chose him, he betrayed him, yes, but in the end, he would always want him. He made various tempting offers to Mace, but the former soul eater was already enamored with Ember Lonergan, the Necromancer, one third of the Trinity descendants of the Goddess Morrigan. Ember and her pack was all that mattered to him now… well, that, and getting a body for his wretched soul.

But everything had its consequences. Actually, it was not all about the trio anymore. Quinn, the former human who died and was resurrected was playing with fire, literally, proclaiming his allegiance to Silas while stabbing him in the back with his wife. Quinn’s soul was torn, the pack desolate and desperate to avenge Evangeline and those that they loved. In the end, it seemed that everything was already lost.

When I picked up Dark Dreams and Dead Things a week ago, I couldn’t let go of Ember, Mace/Balthazar, Kai, Rhys and Tristin (I can’t believe I am finally liking that banshee!) After devouring the second book, I moved on to Deranged Angels immediately and that was the best decision ever! Each night I spent reading these books, I grew restless and edgy and always thinking what could have happened next. I remember waking up every two hours just to read and finish the story, and when I got to the end, my heart hurt, because I knew I have to wait months and months again until Sinister Souls and Dead Things.

I don’t know what else to say. I don’t want to be too much spoilery, but if there’s one thing that’s been true ever since I started this series, it’s that Martina McAtee is remarkable author with amazing writing prowess. McAtee once again blew my mind and I believe she’ll continue doing so in her next books. Speaking of which. I need book 4, now!

Deranged Angels and Cannibal Hearts is the third book in the Dead Things series.

*Spoiler Alter-Don’t read this review if you intend on reading the first two books*

We pick up after the disastrous end of the second book. Quinn is with Silas and still soulless; Mace is still a ghost and Ember is devastated, and Evangeline is dead; there are missing limbs, kidnappings, PTSD and more death. Our ragtag pack of misfits are in pretty dire straights.

One thing is for certain, the pack will only survive the coming battles by working together as one. But this is easier said then done. Secrets are running rampant, omissions and lies hide the truth, and mistrust leads to fractures within the group.

Can the pack overcome their differences and fight together for the good of their town? For the good of everyone?

So, I started my review of the secondbook by saying that a lot happens over the course of the book… Like a lot. Which, if I am being honest, got me a little lost in this one. I couldn’t for the life of me remember who Evangeline was, except that she died and when I went back to the character overviews in the beginning, of course there was no recap of Evangeline. After finishing this whole book, I still can’t recall her a 100%.

The individual stories in this book work for me. The pairings, the drama, separately they work. However, there was something about the flow that didn’t quite bring all of these stories together. Could it be that there was just so much going on that I was waiting for the pieces to all fall together… maybe. Maybe everything will be summed up and tied into nice little knots in the last book and all will be well in the world. But for now, I feel like I am playing the waiting game. Waiting for all the pieces to fit.

The characters are still quite realistically sarcastic, which I like. We use sarcasms and snark so much in the real world that it is good to see an author who can use it correctly. Although Kai was starting to annoy me a little bit with his whinny, but well-founded, panic/fears. Two couples I do like though are Ilsa and Wren and whatever is going on with Tristen and Tate.

Finally, I had a really, really hard time getting past the editing. For two pages, the wrong characters name was used–I mean really? There were also a lot of… wrong words. Using he instead of him, I’m instead of I–that sort of thing. I just have a really hard time looking past that sort of thing, which often makes my reviews a bit harsher than they would be otherwise.

I am invested in this story and need to see where it ends up but because of the above (mostly the editing), this one only gets a grudging three stars from me.

I simply can’t gush enough about the Dead Things series by Martina McAtee! If you like all things paranormal, and I do mean ALL things, this is a series for you! She’s got shifter, witches, sluagh, fae, gemini, and so much more all woven into an incredibly riveting world!
I waited, not patiently, I might add, for the release of Deranged Angels and Cannibal Hearts, and I was not disappointed! I literally could not put this book down! All of my favorite characters returned, some in a completely different light than in the previous books, and also new friends to fall in love with!
From the first book, the Belle Haven Pack has been a family I want to be a part of, and this book just reinforced those sentiments. They are a group of siblings, orphans and friends that share an incredible bond, regardless of class or race. The group was brought together through tragedy, enforced by the powers that be; however, the loyalty to each other that was forged is unbreakable, or at least I thought it was... until Silas.
I have such mixed feelings about Silas. At first I hated him, but now I am not so sure. He seems to be evil to the core, but perhaps he is just a sad, lonely little boy... centuries old, but still.
It is no secret that broody Rhys is my favorite character, and that hasn’t changed. I loved being introduced to Harlow and Malachi/Mallory, and seeing a different side of Astrid.
These books are full of so much teen angst and turmoil. Every time I thought I knew what would happen, we took a completely different turn in the opposite direction.
Again, I absolutely adore the world that Martina McAtee has created and can not wait for more!

Deranged Angels and Cannibal Heartsr

When I began this book, I felt like I had been in too many other worlds between the last book and this one to easily slip into Belle Haven and the Belladonna pack again. Fortunately, I was quite that was mostly not true, largely because of the characters. It was like being away from my family for a good stretch, then coming home. My family and I live in different countries, on different continents, so I have something with which to compare it.
I found my 'Dead Things' family again. They have grown and changed, but that's to be expected. However, there were several situations in which I was quite lost. I could have used some "In the last episode..." There were also some annoying proofreading glitches. Still, I settled in nicely. I look forward to the next visit!

Amazing!!!!

Deranged Angels and Cannibal Hearts is the third book in the Dead things series. The book picks back up with the pack a few weeks after the second book. The pack has a lot on their plate, while trying to save their world before it crashes. Martina McAtee has completely out down her self with this book, the development of each character and their relationships is amazing and beautifully done. This book is fast past and will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more. I recommend for anyone who loves romantic , adventure, paranormal reads. I cannot wait until the fourth book in the series. Keep up the great work McAtee !!!

Deranged Angels

With a lot of series, you can kind of figure out where they are going but with this one I have no clue what's going to happen next and I love it!! I can't wait for the next book. I love these characters, even if there are 3 that really need a horse dropped on their head. It won't hurt them but I sure would feel better about the whole thing. The story is just excellent. I love reading the story from each character's point of view. It's not easy to pull off but Martina McAtee is a master at it. I just can't get enough of her writing. I highly recommend this book and series. It's just so amazing.

An amazing, thrilling YA

This series is my new favorite YA series. I love the diversity of the characters- both in the different types of supernaturals and the different types of relationships. Martina McAtee has a great ability to write characters that draw you in and you feel so connected to them. There are wicked villains that you love to hate, and other characters that you hate that you love. This is the 3rd book in the series, and you definitely want to read the books in order because there is so much that has happened with all of the characters, that you will want to have experienced it from the beginning.
I cannot wait for the next book!!

Hard to put down

The story is great. I find it unpredictable and entertaining.

The reason it only has four stars though is the editing, this book like many other kindle books just suffers from poor editing. The wrong character name in a conversation, misplaced words, words that are plural and shouldn’t be, a “no” that was written as “now”, it’s distracting and a little irritating.

This poor editing situation makes me wish for the ability to have a red pen instead of a highlighting feature, where the corrections would be automatically submitted to someone to fix it.

Deranged Angels and Cannibal Hearts Review

Simply put I loved it. I absolutely love the Pack and the new characters that keep showing up get more and more interesting. The twists and turns didn't stop from beginning to end and left me wanting to know more. I really look forward to the next book in the series and in my opinion Deranged Angels and Cannibal Hearts is definitely recommended.

So much fun!

Ember and the pack are once again facing seemingly insurmountable odds. Family, love, trust, and kickass magic are the keys to beating the odds. This series has such wonderful characters that it’s nearly impossible to put down. If the book titles alone don’t draw you in, the story will keep you in its grasp and leave you wanting more.

I swear this is one of the best series I’ve ever read! I love my imagination taking me to Belle Haven with the pack! I love the characters and I love their story! So full of magic and love, comedy and danger. I can feel the climax coming, everything is so crazy and if it can go wrong it will, it’s coming to a head and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Again!

She’s done it again, another heart pounding, gut wrenching read. I really do love this series. You can tell everything is planned out and it’s great how things foreshadowed or hinted at in book one are coming to pass now. It’s just so crazy how I can go from hating characters to loving them... to hating them. Stop playing with my emotions woman!!!

Nothing happened

I have never seen a writer spin their wheels for several hundred pages. This progressed like a soap opera, at this rate we will have actual plot movement in 5 more books.

If you're a fan of Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Boys gang, give Martina McAtee's wolf pack of orphans a try. Both are amazing groups of friends who become family. You won't soon forget them -- each character is unique and so clearly described. I can't wait to join them again in the fourth book of the Dead Things series!
