We're currently experiencing a golden age in music packaging. Collectible packaging is once again at the forefront of millennials cherish physical records, and trendy clothing stores dedicate ample space to record players and LP racks.
I decided to check this out after reading the Hipgnosis book. I enjoy album art, the mix of imagery, typeface and the fact that it's artwork designed specifically to work in concert with an audio artform.
This collection consists of profiles on various visual artists who have worked on (predominantly) recent/modern releases which was also appealing to me as a method of hunting down more music that I might not yet have heard, or even heard of: on that front it was a success. I didn't like everything I investigated but there were definitely some noteworthy releases which I've marked up for future revisiting.
The book itself was enjoyable visually but the written blurbs about each artist got to be a bit wearying. Any one of them in isolation was fine, but they read like magazine interviews and an entire book of this format wore thin.
My inner music nerd moaned with pleasure (so yeah, hell of a book). Especially if one is afraid to admit in public that he remembers albums exclusively thanks to the cover art - this affair becomes really intimate.
