I actually don’t know the original Nutcracker story but from what I know, this is an oversimplified retelling. The art was cute, but the ending was a little too perfect. Well, Hello Kitty is a forever icon. 3.4/5.

This book is gorgeous!! The illustrations are so cute and beautiful, I can hardly stand it. Now I really want a squeezable foam version of the little wooden nutcracker. He's so cute!
Hello Kitty and her friends are having a sleepover at Grandpa's. He invites them down to his workshop to see the toys he's been making. HK really likes the nutcracker and grandpa gets him from the shelf for her. But then his arm breaks and HK wraps it with a ribbon and grandpa puts him back on the shelf. Later that night, HK sneaks out of bed to see the nutcracker and falls asleep. At midnight a mouse comes out, starts the music box, and all the toys come to life. But the nutcracker stays on the shelf. HK tells the others in the morning, who laugh at her funny dream (except for Grandpa). The next night she goes back and the toys play again, but the nutcracker is missing. Grandpa comes in with the repaired nutcracker, who becomes life-sized and thanks HK for taking good care of him. The others come downstairs and see the living toys.

I re-read this as part of the Hello Kitty Presents the Fairytale Collection omnibus.
It's still just as cute and I still want a squeezable foam nutcracker!
