The Regular Guy: A Nathan McNamara Story

Rate this book
They say the best things come to those who wait, and no one hopes that's true more than Special Operations Commander, Nathan McNamara.

For over a year, he's put his life, his career, and his mother's hopes for more grandchildren on hold to dive headfirst into a world he never knew existed. A world full of angels, demons, and enough sexual frustration to crack the Pope.

But all that is supposed to be behind him, and his future looks bright and full of possibilities. That is, until a familiar chill ripples the atmosphere--and a supernatural thunder rumbles over the mountains.

PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO READ THIS AS A STANDALONE. This book will spoil the series if you haven't read it.

Second read: This feels more like a novella than a novel, but who cares because we finally get Nate's POV!!!

_______________________

The first half of this book actually felt like a long epilogue to the first part of the series. Seven months have passed since the somewhat tragic ending of The Sacrifice; Kasyade is out of the way, Sloan and her daughter are enjoying a "normal" life with their family, there is no trouble on the horizon, everything is nice and sweet... That is, of course, until a certain father-in-law comes back on Earth, and Sloan and Nate realize that they might not be able to have a "normal" life just yet.

This book is shorter than the previous ones and is really more of a bridge between what happened in books 1 to 5 and what will happen in the last 3 books of this series. The plot is very light, but it feels like a sweet breather before we go back into the whole angel-fighting-demons craziness. It is also told from Nate's point of view, which I adored because it allowed us to see even more how amazing he is.

“You want to go on a date?” She bit down on her lower lip, fighting a grin. That was a good sign. I brushed her long bangs off her forehead.
“Sloan Jordan, I want to marry you, but a guy has to ease into these things, you know?”
Her grin broke into a wide smile. “I’d love to go on a date with you.”

“Can I ask you an honest question?”
“No. Those never turn out well.”
“I’m serious.” So was I. Everybody wants honesty until they hear it, right?
She continued anyway. “Aren’t you worried we might go down this road and something will happen?”
“If something doesn’t happen, I’m going to be pissed.”
She laughed. “Not what I meant.”

I loved seeing Nate finally have his chance with Sloan. The poor guy deserved his chance now that Warren is gone, especially since he's spent the last 7 months taking care of Iliana as if she were his own daughter. It was also so sweet and funny to see him take care of her. My ovaries approved.❤️

Just then, something fluttered against my lap. Iliana looked up at me and laughed. I scowled. “Did you just fart on me?” She giggled—and farted—again. Then her diaper slowly warmed, and my mouth melted into a deep frown. “Nope. Not just air.” I made a gagging noise as I stood up.

I gagged again. “Why is it green?” My voice cracked, and Sloan laughed in the other room. “I think this shit’s radioactive.”
“Maybe you’ll get superpowers,” Sloan said.
“That’s really not funny in our world,” I reminded her. Holding my breath, I wiped Iliana’s butt, smearing the mess more than cleaning it off. I gagged again. “NASA could use this stuff to hold the space shuttle together. Good god.” I shuddered.

Even though I am team Nate, and more than happy that he finally got his HEA with Sloan - for now (even though they're far from being done with the paranormal shit), I was glad to see that Warren was not completely out of the series. He is still there, behind the scenes, and I hope that he will continue to be there in the next books. Also because even though I'm team Nate, my heart melts every time he and Warren call each other "brother". 🖤

The Regular Guy by Elicia Hyder

From the Soul Summoner series, this story is told from Nathan’s point of view.
It should be read as part of the series, in the correct chronological order for both the complex storyline itself and to avoid spoilers.

I really enjoyed this month/episode from Nathan’s eyes, although I admit to being tripped up several time since it’s written in first person. I had “wait, who am I?” moments. This was only from habit since the first 5 books in the series, besides the first Nathan novella are all from Sloan’s perspective.
I can’t say too much without spoiling it so summarize by saying an empathetic “Yes!”

Yes, ending leading to a cliffhanger for the overall arc. But read it now because you don’t want to miss this one. It rounds out the character connections.

I've always loved Nate. Every since I read The Detective, I loved his voice and The Regular Guy did not disappoint. It's maybe my favorite of the series. It combines laughter and cries a la Elicia Hyder style and I couldn't stop turning pages until the very end.

Needless to say, I was also a firm supporter of Team Nate. Though Warren is a great guy, I never fully warmed up to him. With him now doing his angel thing, the road was finally clear for Nate to make his move and what a move he did (tissue moment). It made me love him even more. The ending was just an excellent wrap-up with the promise that we will still get to see much much more of our crew in the upcoming part II of the series.

What also captured me about the Regular Guy is that Hyder actually pulled it off to turn a baby without the ability to speak, walk or do anything else "useful" into a full character of the plot. I just loved Illy. Despite her age, her personality sparkled. Got me hungry for pudding, too. Seeing Nate in a father role was an extra bonus and added to the charm of the book.

Overall verdict: The best ending to a great series. Love Elicia Hyder and her books and I can't wait for the next installment.

Sleep is so overrated when you have Nathan to read!! You won’t want to stop once you’ve started. I won’t give anything away, but I am so excited about what happened in this story!! I love each book more than the last in the series. I can only imagine what will happen next! I need more Nathan, more Sloan, and more Iliana. Best book of the series (so far)!!!

SPOILER ALERT for anyone who has not read the previous books. And do not read this book out of sequence either.

Poor Nathan McNamara, he’s been celibate for a year and waiting for Sloan Jordan to get over losing her fiancé Warren Parish, the Angel of Death. It’s Thanksgiving time again and the weekend is being spent at the McNamara household. Such a clean cut family.
This book is from Nathan’s POV and was very short. It’s a segue between book #5, The Sacrifice, and book #7 in the Soul Summoner series. I think that if it had been written in a different order it could have been an HEA for #5 and the opening to the next book. It also ends quite abruptly (cliffhanger). Hopefully we won’t have long to wait for the next book. I love this series. The only reason for the 4 stars instead of five is because it's so short.
As usual the story has some scary moments and some hilarious moments. There’s almost a comical blend between the ultra-normal, conservative, southern family and the paranormal. I love the characters Ms. Hyder has created in this series. They're so well developed.

This book is number 6th in the series.  I think this series could just keep going for me.  I love all the books.  All the characters, make me feel like I'm home in this book.  Sloan, Nathan, Warren and so many more make up another wonderful book and I can't wait to find out what will happen next.  Who do think is carrying the Morning Star?  What a great series!

They say no news is good news, and for Special Operations Commander Nathan McNamara, the last thing he wants is trouble stirring while trying to win his best friend’s love. But for a guy who advertises sh*t is magnetic on his olive-drab ball cap, he should have known supernatural problems were bound to arise. With jarring revelations and new threats looming over the horizon, Nate knows that patience is a luxury he can no longer afford. The regular guy must prove once in for all that Sloan Jordan belongs with him, even if it may kill him.

(I was given this Advance Reader Copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review. Plus, spoiler-free.)

My favorite badass blondie is back in the narrator’s seat, and he’s as brawl and broody as ever. Despite being a man that any woman would be proud to have at her side, Nate isn’t always perfect. And I love that! He can be cocky, overprotective, and possessive when provoked. But he's truly an amazing man--compassionate, responsible, and witty. Plus, he's super great with kids! Nate is special to the ones he holds close. There’s an intoxicating charm about his love story and everything full-circles.

The Regular Guy tore my heart in a million directions, but I cried and laughed like I always do when I have a masterpiece from Elicia Hyder in my hands. The pacing was great, and unlike the pitfall many authors fall into with long series that end with short novels, TRG had its own storyline, crisis, and resolution. It wasn't, in other words, just an extended epilogue. I loved that Elicia revisited favorite minor characters and polished the stage for a new "spin-off" series. I can’t wait for the saga to continue! Well done, eL.

Holy lord!!!!! I loved everything about this story. What’s more? It’s not over yet. This story brings a beautiful conclusion to the triangle that has ruled Sloan’s life. This is by far my favorite book of the series thus far, be prepared to cry- happily. This book was utterly masterful and completely engrossing.

Disappointing

It doesn’t make me happy to give book 6 in the Soul Summoner series a weak 3 star rating because the previous 5 were just so darned good. Unfortunately, The Regular Guy looks like it is the beginning of a piecemeal approach to continuing the series. You know, the kind of serialized story that takes up 85-90% of the pages in the book and the remaining pages are descriptions and excerpts from the author’s other works. That is precisely what happens in this book when the main story ends at the 88% mark and is followed by a longish preview of “Lights Out Lucy.”
—————————-SPOILERS———————————-
Honestly, the series could have ended very solidly with book 5. Instead the author has chosen to try to continue it with this weak offering that has Nate being the uber understanding wanna’ be lover/husband to Sloan, former Angel of Life and father to Illiana, Sloan’s daughter by Warren who is now the Angel of Death in the spirit world. Nate and Sloan spend a lot of time making bottles, changing diapers and attending family holiday celebrations. What little story regarding the angels there is is pretty lackluster and serves as little more than the setup for the cliffhanger.

Bottom line: I’m hugely disappointed. I don’t know how many more books Ms. Hyder has planned for this series but I’d hate to see such a unique concept and strong story continue to be diluted. Nate and Sloan’s relationship is solidified in this book so for me, book 6 is the end of the series.

THE REGULAR GUY is the latest offering in the SOUL SUMMONER series, a series I am really enjoying. This novella is told from Nathan’s wonderfully realistic point of view – that of a man who is frustrated as hell by his ‘are we or aren’t we going to do it’ situation with the love of his life, Sloane, following the dramatic exit of Sloane’s fiancé, Warren, at the end of the last book. That Nathan and Warren have a best buddies relationship only serves to complicate things further.
Of course, there are supernatural goings on – Sloane’s baby daughter is, after all, the most powerful angel in history (or she will when be she learns to talk and walk) – and danger always lurks just on the edge of their complicated lives. Secondary characters have their own issues that might, or might not, impact the situation going forward, but its lovely to see them all developing, and I am really looking forward to the next in series.
Ms Hyder has a true gift for writing dialogue, through which much of the story is told, and her characters linger in your mind long after finishing each book. If you enjoy tales of angels and demons, mixed with everyday scenarios, then I highly recommend you read this series, but do start at the beginning.
I received an ARC from the author which in no way influenced my opinion.

I Loved this book from beginning to end. If you haven’t read the series then I suggest you do. Start with The Detective which is all about Nathan McNamara. Now in The Regular Guy we get more so much more. Amazing just doesn’t begin to cover it. Ms. Hyder has given us so much in this book. It warmed my heart. It shocked me beyond belief. Made me laugh so much.

Nathan has always loved Sloan. Now with the man who’s captured her heart has left, but made him promise him to take care of her, as well as there baby. He’s at a crossroads, of course he’ll do anything for Sloan and the baby. Not sure how Sloan will handle her feelings for him now that Warren isn’t around. He’ll just have to be patient.

Sloan loves Nathan she’s at a crossroads, because Warren isn’t around any longer. She needs to move on. Nathan makes her happy. He’s always there for her.

See what happens. So good.

The Regular guy didn’t disappoint! I had been holding on to the book for about a week, knowing I was going on vacation and needed something to have with me to read. So, glad I brought something else along. Got through the book quickly. I’m not going to give any spoilers, besides that I was surprised at the end. Here’s why: going into this book, I knew it would answer a lot of questions. It did, so no disappointment there. Loved the story line and am glad Nathan has come full circle. I was surprised that this is NOT the ending of the series. Elicia could stop here and would probably drive some of her readers crazy, but thankfully she isn’t doing that! Wahoo! The bummer is for those that are waiting on the next book, it’s the waiting that stinks! Here’s my 👍👍!

This is The Regular Guy: A Nathan McNamara Story, book 6 of The Soul Summoner series written by Elicia Hyder. Well, here we go again. We are back with Sloan and Iliana as they adjust to life without Az and Warren. Nathan has been crazy in love with Sloan for a long time. Will Nate finally get his chance with Sloan? Will the Morning Star show up and spoil all of their progress? Angels and Demons and paranormal of all sorts. This is a great series but ITS NOT OVER YET!! Bring it on Ms Hyder! I’m ready for the next one!

The storm is over and the holidays are approaching and the friends and family of Sloan and Nathan are preparing for some well earned rest, relaxation, and celebration. Their losses are still with them but Sloan and Warren's baby girl gives them a reason to celebrate that and the safe return of Sloan's BFF. This isn't a stand alone but the next installation to the amazing Soul Summoner series, a series that will hook you in and hold you with well written characters you cheer, laugh, cry, and rail with because something or someone is watching over them, shadows are stretching out from the darkness and their holiday celebrations are already being threatened. But Sloan and Nathan.....their long time love, complicated as it is, will be the thread that holds them together.

The Regular Guy delivers the next installment of the Soul Summoner series through Nathan’s eyes. He has always been a favorite of mine. How can you not be a fan of Nathan with his patches and skittles. As much as I really enjoyed how the story progressed, I did feel like parts did not deliver the depth as precious stories. It is still a good read. I have a few theories to ponder as I wait for the next one.

Good book and narration by Carson Beck (audible review)

This was a great series all the way around. I am so glad we got Nathan's point of view and got to know him better. I always liked him as much as I liked Warren too.

That is the problem sometimes with books written in the first person. You don't get everyone's POV so this was a treat.

If you haven't read this series I highly recommend it. It is very entertaining and fun. A lot of things happening and not full of filler nonsense.

As for the narration, Carson Beck did a great job, the women sounded like women, he has a nice reading voice and everyone gets their own distinct voice.

If you are a fan of The Soul Summoner series, The Regular Guy will make you cheer! If you stumbled onto this book I need to let you know that you must start at the beginning with either The Soul Summoner or The Detective (which is a short prequel) because you will be lost as this is an ongoing series and all the books must be read in order. The Regular Guy is written from Nathan's perspective and is taking place several months after the emotional end in The Sacrifice. I have enjoyed every character and most will be revisited in Nathan's story. We have known from the beginning that Nathan, Sloan and Warren had a very complex relationship and The Regular Guy will explore all the questions that you have had. It's a much lighter book than The Sacrifice and Nathan's love of Sloan, Iliana and Warren as well comes through beautifully. Nathan always thought of himself as a "regular guy" when comparing himself to Sloan and Warren but to me he as always been a honest, kind, funny and supportive friend even when it was breaking his heart. I so want to go on and on about how much I loved this book but I don't want to ruin anyone's reading experience with a spoiler review. I leave you with this, The Regular Guy is a fantastic addition to an amazing series and I cannot recommend it enough to fans of paranormal romance so get ready to hear what Nathan McNamara has to say!

I love Nathan and I love Warren. I go back and forth on who I like more and who I want Salon to end up with eventually. But I love that this book is from his point of view. It’s great getting to see a whole different side of Nate.

This is the conclusion to the first season of the Soul Summoner series. And what a way to end things! Told from Nathan's POV, this book wraps up several storylines while opening doors for new adventures. Many beloved characters make an appearance. While it is bittersweet, it is a satisfying conclusion. I laughed a lot and cried just as much. These characters the author has created feel like friends and family. Ms. Hyder has the unique ability to make you feel a part of the world she pens. I stayed up late to finish this in one sitting. And it was honestly the first thing on my mind when I woke up. The story stays with you. I am anxiously awaiting the second season of the series.

Fans of the Soul Summoner series get the ending they have - or haven't! - been wanting. The Regular Guy picks up shortly after The Sacrifice ends, and neatly wraps up Sloane's saga. This isn't the end of the series, just the end of this portion of it. Hyder's trademark wit and captivating characters leave me with just one complaint - I finished the book far too quickly!

This book takes a little breath and gets us ready for the next chapter in the Soul Summoner series. First of all, if you are listening on audio, the narrator switches from a female (Brittany Presley) to a male (Carson Beck) of course because this book is told from Nathan's POV. It is nice to get to see things from Nathan's perspective, even though I will admit it is a little weird after everything that we've gone through so far. One comment I will say about the narration is that the character of Azrael is made to sound like a frail old man. To me, that is just WRONG. Other than that, the narration was fine.

We are now at a point where things are beginning to settle down - at least supernatural things. Warren is gone and has taken Azrael's place as a Archangel. We get to see how our gang is dealing with these changes.

Did I like this book? Yeah, I did. But maybe not as much as the prior book. I started this one IMMEDIATELY after finishing book 5 and I'm not sure my heart was ready for everything.

Without going into spoilers, let's just say that life must go on. And...it does. To me, though, everyone else was WAY more mature than I think I would have been. But...that's just me.

I am interested to find out what this next chapter in the series in going to entail. It is set up a bit at the end of this book - or at least, we are given a few crumbs and told that there just might be a way into Nulterra, so let's just see what the future holds....

Let me start by saying you have to read tne entire series before reading this book or you will be lost. This is a definate bridge book. The Author, Elicia Hyder, has said that she is writing the books like you would write TV Series--this set of 6 books is the first Season of the Soul Summoner Series. This book gives you a glipse into Nathan's view of things and also answers some questions that lingered from the last book. But it definately opens the possibility for the next season but leaves it open for at least two different stories it could follow. There is not a cliff hanger but leaves enough that you want more. You want to follow the characters down whatever path they take.

Elicia's characters are very relatible--you will be in a love/hate relationship with some due to their personalities but you will definately be pulled into the story. This story is very short compared to the last couple. However, it does make a great addition to the series and gives you insight into what is coming next.

Personally, I can't wait for the next season -- definate read-- the entire series!

Book 6 of The Soul Summoner Series ---

To those who haven't read this amazing series:
I highly recommend you start from Book 1 with a health warning - you'll be sleep-deprived till you have finished reading the entire series. You will shed a few tears or have your sanity questioned for laughing out loud in public while reading it. To avoid that, you can read it within the safe confines of your home, with a box of tissue at hand (just in case), and turn off any electronic devices that will distract you from this incredible journey.

To fellow Hydernation members:
What an awesome addition to the series, right? I have got to admit that out of old habits, I've struggled a few times when I pictured "I" as Sloan as opposed to Nate, but that doesn't mean I love this book any less. It's always refreshing to read the story from Nate's point of view. Much like The Detective, this book probably got me laughing, chuckling and giggling more so than other books in the series because of the great sense of humour in Nate's narrative.

To Elicia:
I can't thank you enough to have given us such a wonderful book told by Nathan. Please keep these brilliant books coming!!! x

The Regular Guy, Elicia Hyder’s Nathan McNamara story - and book 6 of her The Soul Summoner series - is no regular book. It’s a great addition to the series that gives the character Nathan his chance to really shine in a way that totally works with Sloan and Warren’s story. If that is meaningless to you because you’re a newcomer ti this series then let me tell you that you are missing out on something great and should run ti start this series at its excellent book 1 (Soul Summoner). For those who have been joyously following along, welcome back. The gang is all here (hello Adrianne, Azrael, Reuel, Dr. Jordan, Fury, et. al., you wonderful cast) and the overarching story continues in a way guaranteed to be enjoyed. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

About Time!

While I love Sloan and Warren’s relationship, I always felt bad for Nathan. This story turned out to be completely different than what I was expecting but oh, so satisfying for Sloan and Nathan with Warren doing even better for himself than I anticipated. I won’t leak any spoilers but I love how his author created a way for Sloan, Warren and Nathan to exist but yet not make things weird.

The secondary characters like Adrianne, Azrael, and Dr. Jordan, to name a few, are a joy to read as well. I love Reuel’s love of food, Fury’s bad-ass attitude, and how Sloan cannot get over Shannon.

If you haven’t read any of the other fantastic books in this series, you will not even come close to appreciating all of the twists, plots and dynamics this book brings.

This is a fast-paced page turner for sure! I read it in one sitting because it was so good and the anticipation for it was enormous with a craving for more! Excellent job! I absolutely loved it!
