She’s survived the mean streets of Manchester and slavery in a mill. Can she survive a brutal penal colony? Convict Tilly Marsden has to serve four years as an unpaid maid in Australia before she can get the prized Ticket of Leave. With freedom only two months away, Tilly agrees to turn a friend’s shirt into a dress. When she discovers it was stolen, she throws it in the river.
Watching her is Joel Agnew, a convict working as an unpaid police constable. Sensing Tilly deserves a break, he dishes out some old-fashioned discipline. They both think that’s the end of the matter. Then a body is discovered and Tilly finds herself in danger. Can Joel help her before it’s too late?
Publisher's Note: Her Convict Constable is a sweet romance with a bit of mystery and old-fashioned Victorian discipline.
Kate Charlton is the alter ego of Bethany Leigh. Bethany's/Kate's books are a mixture of crimeance and romance, but they all involve a wilful heroine getting her bottom smacked by an exasperated hero.
The story starts in 1836 in England and will end in 1840 Van Diemen’s Land (now known as Tasmania) where those convicted of crimes like theft or forgery were taken to serve their sentence. This will be the story of two young women, Tilly Marsden and Sarah. Tilly was only sixteen and Sarah eighteen when they arrived to serve their eight-year sentence.
The four-month journey on the ship will have Sarah protecting Tilly, so she will remain a virgin and to keep her safe, and that included Sarah having to exchange sexual favors, but that is what she will do. Later, Tilly will have her chance to help Sarah out.
The story is part history, part mystery, part suspense, a crime, a cover-up, and a new beginning. Another convict, Joel Agnew, will work as a Convict Constable and help with patrolling the area, dealing with minor crimes like drunkards, to run errands and collect payment for penalties and fines.
The plot will have Sarah bringing Tilly a shirt that a British officer gave her in exchange for sexual favors, and she wants Tilly to fashion it into a dress for her. But then word comes that a shirt was stolen from an officer and when Tilly hears, she knows she must get rid of the shirt, but in doing so, she will be caught in the act by Constable Agnew.
The story will have Constable Agnew in search of who stole the shirt; then a body of one of the mill-owners will have him looking for the culprit to this murder. The more he investigates, the more he learns by various people that leads him to believe these crimes are connected. But when he hears a story from Tilly, he will be furious with her for withholding important information that links these crimes and yet; she will give him a critical lead.
The story takes on a game of cat and mouse to catch the murderer while keeping some people safe and having the right people in place that will hold leverage in the situation. The word of convicts against a free person, especially a British officer will be in question.
Three convicts are only months away from receiving their Ticket of Leave (parole) for good behavior. During the past four years, they have worked without pay, but that will change as long as they stay in good standing.
The story is romance, history, and mystery all tied up together. While there is mention of sexual dalliances and favors, the story does not depict any of them. There are several spanking scenes, and mention of beatings and abuse by some employers to their convict employees.
The Crime and Punishment aspect of the story is both bizarre and quaint, particularly when it comes to Joel's administration of punishment to the helpless Tilly. Stranger still is Tilly's (and the general population of the time) acceptance of such indecent acts as normal, inevitable, and eventually...arousing. It may be old as sin, but sometimes being bad can feel really good, even in the modern world. Read Her Convict Constable and take your punishment! http://thetbrpile.weebly.com/reviews/...
I love a book that can take me to a place I’ve never been. When that place is 19th century Australia, I love it even more. Her Convict Constable is a tense, well-written story: part romance, part crime thriller. The fluid writing, along with the effortless command of period details, held my attention from the first page. Before Australia was a destination for people in search of beautiful beaches, winsome creatures, and fine wine, it was a brutal world. Settled by convicts who were often treated more savagely than livestock, only the strongest survived. Enter Tilly Marsden. Her youth and strength are about to be tested. Again. A trifling crime has landed her in the penal colony of Tasmania, one of the worst convict settlements ever. Tilly has to serve seven years as virtual slave labor before she can get her Ticket of Leave. With two months left in her gruelling sentence, her loyalty to her only friend embroils her in theft and murder. When Convict Constable Joel Agnew catches her trying to destroy evidence, it could cost her everything. Rather than turning her over to authorities, he turns her over his knee for a quick correction. The affection between Tilly and Joel develops at a natural satisfying pace. Tilly’s friendship with Sarah is authentic and timeless. I could spend days with these strong, interesting characters. But the murderer is still on the loose and Tilly is in mortal danger. Will she look to Joel for help? Can he protect her from her own independence? I loved Her Convict Constable. I didn’t want it to end.
Her Convict Constable is a sweet and tame little story. I think the author did a marvelous job researching the lives of convicts that arrived in the penal colonies and what their lives were like as they tries to work off their debt to society. I think high society could have done a lot more to help these people instead of always blaming them or snubbing their noses at them. This story has a nice mystery to it as well and just a bit of spanking and romance to make it interesting. It was a good short read. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Her Convict Constable is an extremely creative, compelling book. I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting, well into the night. The descriptive narrative made it easy to visualize the unique setting. The characters were developed and evoked a wide range of sentiments. The emotional plot moved quickly and turned into an intriguing mystery with elements of danger and suspense. The romance was very sweet and I loved the ending. You'll enjoy this wonderful story.
This story offers a sweet romance blended into the bleak life of those sent to the penal colonies of Australia. Tilly and Joel are both well written and very likeable characters. The story is both unique and interesting. I was drawn in from the very beginning and my attention held to the end. This is my first book by this author and I definitely look forward to reading more from her in the future.
A well-written story with suspense, danger, drama this is the first time I have read a book that deals with Convicts sent to Australia. Joel and Tilly's story kept my interest throughout, I wonder if there is going to be more books. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I haven’t read about this time period and I’m not sure how true to the time period it is, but this book was fascinating. Then layer on the main characters, Tilly and constable Joel, and you have a truly well written story with an interesting plot that kept me turning the pages from first to last page. I definitely recommend this book.
