Alexandra's family kept a huge secret from her for 21 years. A secret that is now opening her eyes to a weird reality and flipping her life upside down. Not that her life was looking that bright to begin with, but if she had known, she would have been prepared when actual trolls start trying to abduct her so the ancient vampire Master can use her to take control of the human world. Now, even with a whole army of fae hunters at her back, plus a certain sword-wielding, aggravatingly gorgeous, fae at her side, she will have to fight her own demons, old and new, if she wants to save what little family she has left plus, you know, all the rest of the human race. No pressure though.
Contains course language and violence.

Jen Pretty is a well- known and prolific writer of smart urban fantasies. Her novels are character driven, witty, often violent, and with a liberal sprinkling of coarse language. Some of her books genre-hop into mythology, pulling characters and situations from a variety of sources. When not writing, Jen can be found in the barn with her horses, or knee-deep in the vegetable garden at her home in rural Ontario, Canada, which she shares with her husband, three children, and a white husky dog named Salt.
A great book. I felt for all the characters. The descriptions made me feel like I was right there with the characters. Can't wait for the next book. I received this book for free and this is my honest review
I haven't found a book I've read through to the end in a while. This is an excellent read. Told from Lex POV who is quite a funny character. Sometimes she's tough and sometimes she's a damsel. The fae and vampires are at war, she and the hunters are fae and the war is not tipped in their favour. She doesn't accept things easily which makes the storyline more believable . The world building and characters are well developed and likeable. The banter between them feels real and well thought out to make the story flow. There is plenty of action and some sadness when some characters die. Lex may have a love interest but it feels like it's just developing, Armond is the leader of the hunters and her bonded fae. Bonded as in not soul mates but in anchoring the 'time keeper'. Both characters are interesting to read about. The story has a lot of violence with cutting vampires heads off, beatings etc, and there is also bad language but no sexual content. So not recommended for young people. Recommended read and in my opinion worth the five stars.
I received an advanced copy and volunteered to review. When I first started this book, I could not stand Alexandra. That sounds horrible, but I think it had a lot to do with her mannerisms and her lifestyle. I could sympathize with her family history though, despite how she acted, which says a lot for the author's character building. As Alexandra began to learn more about her true self, my opinion of her changed. Taking her from her former way of life and dropping these kinds of truth bombs on her changed her for the better, and I enjoyed her reactions to each new challenge she encountered as she learned. It's slow to start, but that's to be expected with any good world-building series.
First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also, this is my first read with this author & it won't be my last.
Wow!!! I truly couldn't put this book down. I can't wait to read the next story. Alexandra, Lex, is a lost & depressed young woman when we meet her. Eventually over time she becomes so much better. She meets Victor and many others as she learns about her heritage and the war between vampires and fae. There is so much going on with evil vampires and some that aren't. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up.
Warning: The story contains descriptions of PTSD and starts of with a failed suicide attempt. If descriptions of that trigger you, and if you get triggered by descriptions of murder, please avoid this book.
I really like this book because of the main character. Most paranormal stories usually end up with characters fighting hard against their initial encounter but it was kind of fresh for the MC to end up rolling with it.
It was also fresh for the MC to not have the typical wild girl best friend, but instead have family as the pillar of strength.
The characters lacked depth and development. The constant battle then shower time then battle again got old. Couldn't connect to the story after the constant battle. No romance development at all. The storyline is about a female fae who lost her family then poof she has time powers to help the fae battle the vampires continuously then she gets kidnapped then back to fighting. I got bored after awhile. Won't be reading the next book. Two stars for a good book cover and a good starting chapters until the repetitive battling.
Fae Magic by Jen Pretty is a 4.5 star read. I really enjoyed this authors take on the Fae, she grabbed my attention firmly from the first page and held on until the early hours of the morning when I finally finished it. I’d highly recommend this book. I voluntarily reviewed a gifted copy of this book.
Interesting take on fae and vampires. Love how the main character is strong despite her terrible past. I love how she connected with Luke and Armond. Lex's magic was different then any other story I've read and I really enjoyed reading how her powers grew. Looking forward to finding out what Lex gets into next!
The story was good, but the writing style was different from what I’m used to. I don’t think the relationship between the main characters was developed enough either. I just didn’t see why they ended up liking each other. But that is probably due to the writing style, so I’m still giving it 4 stars.
I loved this book. It has been a long time since I have read a book that I had a very hard time putting down. It has everything a person could ever want in a fantasy book. I can't wait to start reading book 2 in this series to see what kind of trouble finds Lexi and Armond next.
I tried reading it but my eyes kept closing and I dozed off a couple of times. It was a boring read plus I just couldn't connect with with the characters.
This novel started out very well but then started dragging and repeating itself. Reg was overwritten, being too obnoxious to possibly hold the position he does.
