Ça pousse comment ?

Rate this book

This is so lovely! We've read a lot of gardening books this spring and this is one of my favorites. It is chock full of all sorts of aspects of gardening, from the obvious planting-through-harvesting to other topics like composting, making bug hotels, and taking the produce to market. I loved the grandparent/grandchild relationship, the beautiful gardens, the educational aspects skillfully embedded throughout, the delightful illustrations. I even learned a few things regarding the eight vegetable families.

Beautiful illustrations and descriptions of gardening through the year with Sophie, a city girl who goes to spend her summer vacation with her grandparents in the countryside and learns all about how food grows.

A fun book that will teach children all the delights of gardening and answer the many questions they have. Although there is a storyline, it's more of a brief encyclopedia for the little gardener.

Ages: 6 - 9

A year in the garden where we learn about different vegetables and garden tools. It was a little long for my 6 yr old so we had to split it into two readings.

This longer picture book about the progress of a garden over the seasons is well done, presenting a story of a girl who helps her grandparents. Illustrations are a mix of vignettes from the story and garden elements such as insects, tools, and flower becoming a pea pod. Cut-aways of the garden to show plant roots, root vegetables, and underground animals are a nice addition, as are the end papers showing vegetable families (flowering, bulb, leafy, etc.). This is a translation from French and there are a few words that might need to be further translated into American (e.g., gherkins and courgettes) and there are some animals not so common to the U.S. (wild hedgehogs).

This is a good book for kids with longer attention spans who like to learn about gardening. It is incredibly informative, but it is also lengthy. I liked that it shares information about each of the seasons and many of the tools used on the farm, as well.

Unfortunately it makes you choose between birds (who may eat your crop) and cats (who may eat the songbirds). I say, use nets or scarecrows or children to protect the crop, and keep the dang cat inside. I love cats as companions, but not as predators, which they truly are!

diced beet + diced apple + salad dressing = happy

Sophie should not know what measles looks like. She should simply say that that the leek with rust disease has red spots. She and her schoolmates have been vaccinated, have they not?

Lots of wonderful information and very appealing pictures.

A great (fairly long) intro to gardening throughout the year. I love the illustrations and that it follows Sophie as she visits her grandparents, partly to help them with their garden. This has quite a few words, but if your preschooler or older is interested in gardening, then they may enjoy it (remember that you don't have to read a book in one sitting!).

I've loved all the books by this author that I've read, but they are definitely more for one-on-one reading, rather than for a storytime. Between the many words and detailed pictures, it just wouldn't work well with a group.

Such a cute book! I loved the illustrations throughout the book. They were so detailed. I also loved at the end when Sophie was given the seeds so that she could create her own garden with her friend. I like the spot the tools game that is in the book. That is a good way to engage the students. On the inside cover of the book front and back you can see the different vegetable families which is cool.

My 5 yr old loved this book and begged me to give it a 5 star rating. We are currently growing our own vegetable garden so this was the perfect book to accompany our gardening project. Lots of great illustrations of different fruits and vegetables. Information was adequate enough for a picture book.

A little girl goes to her grandparents' for the summer and learns to garden. The illustrations are lovely and plentiful with some science-y diagrams thrown in. It would make a great addition to a lesson plan of similar topic. 3/5 as this is not really a story and lacks plot. 4-7yo.

Gardening is one of my favorite topics, but this is not a picture book garden book that I really enjoyed. The text is wordy and not too interesting. I did enjoy the illustrations and I learned a new word, pluses which in the USA is what we call legumes.
