If the lights go out forever, can love survive? When four women from different walks of life are brought together by fate to witness the end of the world as they know it, each must find a way to survive against the odds as well as learn to rely on each other. Jackie Scott wields incredible influence as a magazine executive in Seattle. As she plans a smashing party for her fortieth birthday, everything is precisely as she wants it. But when a solar storm lights up the night sky in a dazzling display, it not only ruins the party but destroys power around the planet and Jackie must turn for help from the one woman she has tried so hard not to want … Taylor. Taylor Barnes is an Army veteran new to Seattle and wants nothing more than to find some peace and quiet working as a rent-a-cop in a corporate high-rise. When she is asked to attend the birthday party of the building's powerful and sexy CEO, she can hardly say no. Little did she realize every skill she ever learned would be put to the test to save the woman she can't seem to stop thinking about … Jackie. Anna Patten is a nurse practitioner who has returned one last time to the town she ran away from to pack up the house where she grew up. Trying to avoid any drama, she cannot get away fast enough, or so she tells herself while her heart wonders about her high school crush. When fate lands them together in Seattle at a birthday party, suddenly Anna must lean on the woman she once left behind … Lexi. Lexi Scott has built a simple life of writing novels and remodeling her farmhouse, but when she runs into a long-lost friend, her world is turned upside down. It's not until she attends her sister Jackie's birthday party that she is forced to not only face the apocalypse but now she must decide if she is willing to risk her heart again to save the only woman she ever loved ... Anna. The end of the world is only the beginning. If you like a story with romance and adventure, mixed with conflict and heroism, then you will love KC Luck’s page-turning new book. 3.5 Stars. Not a bad read. One of the better Kindle Unlimited books I have read recently. There were a few things I didn’t care for but overall it was a good entertaining read.
This is a disaster almost pre and post-apocalyptic story. But the tag I would stick on it first is romance. This really is a romance just with excitement and danger to keep you reading. I think because of that, this will appeal to people who might not always care for post-apocalyptic books. When a sun flare/solar type storm takes out all the power in the world, four women must find a way off the top of Seattle’s Space Needle to safety in the country.
This book focuses on two potential couples. There are the Scott sister’s Lexi and Jackie, and their potential love interests Anna and Taylor. While all four would be considered main characters, Taylor is an Army Veteran, and exactly the person you want around in this kind of book. Her character slowly turns into the star and my favorite of the book.
What I liked about this book is it didn’t start right in the middle of the disaster. It starts like a normal romance staring two couples. You have the couple who were long lost loves and a woman falling for a woman for the first time. Luck (the author) takes the time to build up the couples background and relationships. Once the disaster hits, this book is pretty exciting. However, Luck still takes the time to focuses on both potential relationships.
While I really enjoy disaster, post-apocalyptic, and zombie apocalypse type books, I like that this book wasn’t danger and anyone could die, all the time. I like to read about the actual survival and relationships, not just always oh look bad people, something bad is going to happen. This book was a good mix of excitement and relationships.
I think this book will work for both romance and disaster/post-apocalyptic fans. There is a book 2 coming out in the future. The one good thing is the way this one ended, you could stop the journey with just this book. The main storyline is complete enough, but I will be reading the next. This was good quality for a Kindle Unlimited book. The mistakes I noticed were small.
Not really into 'The end of the world' books..... films and T.V shows, yes, books, no ... think that's why I have taken my time getting to reading this. Some one give me a slap for that!... I really really enjoyed this book!
The story its self is a new concept to me. The lights go out, no electricity, wondering how long it will stay off for before it comes back on..... (wondering how long your kindle will last, depressing thought right there. :/)
The MC's, Anna and Lexi are rekindling their romance.. and you also have Taylor and Jackie, who are both trying to work things out.
And i really want to say is, cause I'm sure other people have thought this... where the book is set, on a Old farmhouse in middle of no where.... 'the walking dead'.... just replace the zombies with living lesbians and you got yourself a book :)
What seems like a normal power cut turns quickly in a terrifying nightmare. Their whole world spirals out of control and everybody have to count on one another. Danger lurks on every corner and the only option is to bunker down in the farmhouse but the road is long and rocky. I loved the way the characters were brought together, how they live and love under the worst circumstances. This story was utterly intriguing and the lovestories were very passionate. All the elements that make a story outstanding, were present. I'm glad I didn't miss this one and I hope that there will be a sequel very soon.
So a nurse practitioner, an army vet, an author and a magazine executive walk into a bar.....
...ha, just kidding. I haven't dug into a disaster\post-apocalyptic read in a long while, is it weird that I was craving one? What does that say about me, I wonder.
Due to some bizarre northern lights/solar flare thingy, all the power goes out worldwide and the story follows 4 characters, Jackie and Lexi, who are sisters, and Taylor and Anna. We see their survival skills kick in, their individual strengths at work (see my first line), and how they navigate the sudden mean streets of Seattle to journey to seemingly safer Astoria. As others have mentioned, this is more of a romance than disaster book. Lexi and Anna have found each other again after 25 years apart, and Taylor and Jackie are really just trying to figure each other out.
There is quite a bit of OTT language, which is usually a huge turn off for me. The amount of times the author talks about each woman craving the safety of another's arms and can't be out of each other's presence or they will die yada yada got barfy real fast. I would have loved more edginess and darkness (ha, no pun intended) in the characters.
However I did enjoy this and do look forward to continuing the series! The points above aside, I love a good survival series and the undoubtedly hairy situations they will continue to find themselves in. I believe new characters are introduced coming up as well, so I fully accept there will be more cheesy romance than other post-apocalyptic books and just embrace it. Is it also strange though that I kinda home the author crushes my soul a abit along the way?
This is for the audible version. I don't know how I missed these books! This was was fantastic! It's a great story full of action and incredibly interesting. I loved it so much I immediately bought the sequel.
I'm sorry, I really tried to at least find this okay, because it's something like the second book ever I've seen with an apocalyptic theme and wlw. Except that it's not about the apocalypse really, it's about butches being the voice of reason to their femme love interests who find all this heroism hard to resist. I liked exactly only one of the four main characters. And I did not believe one second all the creepiness and lawlessness and authoritarianism (thinly veiled critic of communism perchance?) that crop up mere hours after the blackout starts.
Also see, in no particular order: - insta-love - "my best friend in high school who broke my heart is back for a week and I'm realizing I never stopped loving her in 25 years and she's gonna break my heart again" - "is she straight or is she a lesbian?" (yes, because women who have only ever been with men and found themselves attracted to a woman are "straight" and "can't make their mind up") - "we're only friends, I'm not gay, this attraction is a weird glitch, but I'm doing everything to get in your pants while saying we shouldn't" - femme but strong a.k.a. stubborn but wrong - perfect butch ex-military protector-type who knows how to read everyone and is always right - lust in contexts that are fraught with violence and danger, like, sure adrenaline and whatever, but also no? not for most people? that feels extremely unlikely and very much copied from unrealistic male fiction, especially with regular implications of rape danger by the author - miraculous baby to be taken care of - "You belong to me" (I'm sorry but no :C, that's not love or passion :C) - etc.
In sum, the whole point of what appealed to me in the blurb (the apocalyptic bits) is to serve as an excuse/excitement for boring cliches romances.
(I think mostly it all felt very masculine and "bro lit" to me on the apocalyptic aspects, which is the opposite of what I'm looking for in books written by/for queer women. While the romance writing felt very "chick lit", also in opposition with what I'm looking from queer lit.)
3.5 stars I really enjoyed this dystopian read. The potential for a solar flare to knock out power and electronics around the world is not beyond the realm of possibility. The ensuing riots, looting and violence are also realistic outcomes, chilling as this might seem. It is fitting that this story is based in Oregon, a preppers paradise. Of the four main women who are the focus of the story, the military trained Taylor is best prepared to understand the gravity of the blackout. The woman she worships, Jackie,is the exact opposite. In a crisis there is always someone in denial, someone who hopes they will wake up from the bad dream they must be in and check their phones for emails and meeting times.
After a slow start while the author introduces Lexxi and Anna, Taylor and Jackie the book takes off and the reader is right there, stuffed in the back seat of a car filled with canned goods and clothing, racing for your life. I expect a few enemies made in the opening scenes might come back to haunt these women in future books.
The book is not perfect. Early on there is more telling than showing and the characters fit into predictable butch/femme roles. There were some scenes which made me cringe with the dominant interactions. That said, the story is action packed and feels very realistic. What happens to these women and their friends seems entirely possible and it made for an entertaining read.
4 Stars - smart women dealing with an apocalypic event make for an un-frustrating read
What do I mean by "un-frustrating"? Well, instead of spending the book yelling at the characters for doing stupid shit alla time, they were actually pretty smart most of the time and the few times they were doing stuff that I was like "please don't do that", they were still responding in reasonable ways so it was understandable. I was only cringing cuz this ain't my first post-apocalypse rodeo. But the ladies always managed to figure a way out of the bad situations. It is enjoyable to read stories about smart woman, being smart - ya know?
The narrator did an ok job. She has a "smile" in her voice a lot of the time that seemed at odds with the material at times, but it didn't bother me too much.
I skimmed most of this because I really could not get into it. Sorry. There were so many POV shifts my head spun, and so it was impossible to get to know the characters in any meaningful way. Lots of info dumps and tells that are none ideal. I didn't get a feel for any of it. And it took a long while to get anywhere. I expected less of a romance and more of a darker apocalyptic feel.
I was skeptical to read this book because end of the world themes aren't exactly my favorite but boy am I glad I did. The writing was very well done and the characters, all of them, were written with depth, description, and emotion. The only thing that threw me was how quick the "mob mentality" set in and took over. The worldwide "blackout" happened and within hours your have looting, barricades, panic. I mean to anyone a blackout is temporary, something that will eventually be fixed. Despite that, the journey out of Seattle was tense one and kept me well into night reading page after page to see what would happen. Taylor is by far my favorite character. And though I do like Jackie, I find her yo-yo character a bit annoying but I guess it fits her personality as everything is out of her control and she is used to being in control. I am very much looking forward to starting the next book later today. Free with kU but this is definitely a book I will be buying for my own collection
4.5 stars I enjoyed this one a lot! Interesting lead-up to the big event, love the relationship building with the characters.... well written. Really strong start to this series and I'm looking forward to more!
Oh my goodness, I like dystopian but I like it far out not too close to today's time. This one has me still thinking about what I'd do in a similar situation.
The 4 Main Character (MCs for none bookworms wondering) are Lexi Scott, her sister, Jackie Scott, Taylor Barnes and Anna Preston. I loved all the characters but Lexi and Taylor were my favorite. Anna is too much of a good person... They're times she made me want to scream. Like, it's fine, let them die lol (not really but, yeah, really) . But that's not Anna and it's not any of the characters. Jackie starts out as a spoiled millionaire and slowly adapted. Lexi will let anyone in her home which also drives me mental, and Taylor wants to protect everyone. They're are awesome, kickass women! Strong on their on way and unstoppable together!!! And that is what makes this story awesome.
I've read all 3 books in the series and I'm just now reviewing.
Each book builds on these 4 and adds a few more characters. The biggest character development was Jackie Scott.
Basically, there is a solar storm that causes the power (electricity) to go out.... in the whole world!! We go back to darkness. Imagine that for a sec. If you depend on medicine like insulin, no more fridge. No food storage, nothing to cook with since most of us have electric cook tops but no foods like meat either because no storage. My brother is diabetic this book created a new fear I didn't even know I had.
On top of no meds and food, hospitals can't do much. Can't run your book work, don't get sick. If you're lost can't find your loved ones because cops have nothing to search with, no gas because people will use it all up, etc etc... scary stuff. Now after you've imagined that, drop yourself in one of the biggest city's like Seattle (or Chicago if you dare to be morbid, and sorry if you're from there) and just imagine the chaos that will ensue if nothing comes back on in 24 hours to 72 hours. Riots and looting and lawlessness to name a few. In case of a fire, forget your battery dead phones they don't work anyway as no towers are active. Can't call for a fire truck or heaven forbid this happens when you're on an elevator 60 floors up (add to anxiety list).
The first part of this book is dealing with just that and denial. The "it didn't just happen and no way it can stay out (power) indefinitely." Then realizing regardless of how long it's out, the city is not safe and trying to journey to Lexi's farm. A trip that takes much much longer, and includes fights, angst, traffic, bad people, fires, etc. I really enjoyed not just this book but the whole series and each new added character. I recommend
I've read a bunch of Luck's books and I have to say that this series is probably her best writing yet. This is my second reading of this book--refreshing myself for the fourth in the series--and as much I loved it the first time, I devoured it the second time. I appreciated Luck's writing style and found myself slack-jawed at some of her descriptions regarding any action scenes; gun toting, baseball swinging harrowing moments to heroic butch Army veterans hurling themselves down a cliff, scenes. Luck knows how to write action and write it well. I was right there with protag Taylor going ass over teakettle down that steep hill. I'm still calming my heart. Having already read this, I remembered the gist of the story, but I forgot all about the breathtaking, terrifying, and frustrating moments as the group escaped the city.
Luck not only wrote us an entertaining and at times, hair raising story, she also seamlessly coalesced a romance between four different main characters. She built up suspense and tension as each pair slowly got to know one another and/or reunite old flames before the world fell apart. By doing this, she gave us something to hang onto while the women fought for their lives to get out and basically just survive. Taylor and Jackie played a passionate tango, pushing/pulling all throughout the entire story. Jackie being straight and confused by her attraction toward Taylor was rather frustrating at times. I found her a little selfish where Taylor was concerned. I think she played it hot and cold too much, then proceeded to act confused when the experienced lesbian wouldn't even look at her. I didn't blame Taylor for distancing herself even if it was killing her because she was clearly falling for Jackie. As much as I love a soap opera, this one hurt. Lexi and Anna jumped hearts and loins first back into their relationship years after being apart. I really liked Anna after she reunited with Lexi, and she was becoming a favourite until she chose her job over Lexi. I understood her choice to stay back and help, but it was kind of cold the way it happened. I still like her ;)
In the end, Luck left me itching to dive back into the second part for more adventures and soap opera lesbian drama!
I love these disaster tales, grew up in the era of the original Poseidon Adventure and Towering Inferno movies, besides Jaws in the water. Also a big fan of SciFi books like Alas, Babylon and dystopian, in general.
But the most amazing thing about Darkness Falls is that the characters and relationships immediately grabbed me even before any of this type of action happens. If all there was to this book was a story about two old high school sweethearts reuniting and a sexy pair of new lovers, it was shaping up to be an outstanding one. The siblings, Lexi and Jackie, are funny and dynamic, their respective partners, Anna and Taylor, are heroes worthy of a true disaster plot. There’s plenty of steam and smoldering tension up until the blackout. Nice setups of Seattle and the outlying areas which is again vital for this genre.
Then when all hell breaks loose, the story ratchets up and the adrenaline flows. It’s a good ride with mc’s and supporting characters that we care about which is incredibly important in a disaster book because otherwise why even bother. Can’t wait to read book 2.
Wow, just wow. This was a completely unexpected book. Without giving too much away, the book starts as a relatively typical dual love story with two different common love story themes. Then, bam, big twist, and the reader is taken on the ride of their life as they follow this page-turning story to the end. I am so looking forward to the next book that comes out in October. Sign me up KC Luck, I definitely want notification when that one is released!
I really enjoyed this apocalyptic read with lots of badass compassionate lesbian chicks!
The story of Anna and Lexi reuniting after decades of love lossed and rekindling through the hurt really touched me. As did the new romance of Lexi's sister, Jackie falling for Taylor. Although Jackie's constant push and pull did annoy me, it was my only complaint.
I can't wait for the continuing stories to these characters and to see how they handle the lights going out and the world changing so fast.
I don't normally read the end of the world books. Yes I love zombie books. But this jewel was amazing. I love how you got to know Jackie, Taylor, Anna and Lexi before all heck broke loose. I really liked seeing all these women band together to get through the good and bad that was happening. I definitely recommend this book.
I’ve wanted to read this for a while, and finally got around to it. I love a good post apocalyptic story.
The story follows four women. They were all really likeable for the most part. I felt that for one of the couples the romance came too easy. For the other, something was missing for me. That said, I still really enjoyed watching them develop.
I never really thought about what might happen in an event like this. So the action and adventure was also really enjoyable.
I do plan to read the next book in the series for sure.
I loved this book. It had adventure, romance and awesome characters. The storyline moved along flawlessly and kept me totally involved. I can't wait to see what happens next.
I’m torn about this book. It made me feel a little contradictory. The writing is good, the story has its compelling moments but the end of the world I thought I was reading about was less the focus then the romance. Which others might like more than I did. I also feel like a few scenes pushed the consent barrier and made me squirm a little, and it seemed a bit uncharacteristic for the protagonist. But again others might not see a problem with it. I did enjoy the ensemble cast, though I get the sisters relationship didn’t ring altogether true for me. I feel like they would have been more concerned about each other. But I did adore the friendship that developed between Lexi and Taylor.
I read this book years ago and still vividly remember the feeling of adventure and admiration of the brave and resourceful MCs, when faced with a gigantic solar storm that destroyed the modern, comfortable life, these brave women showed the toughness and grits and incredible intelligence, not only survived but thriving. All the characters are relatable and realistic, and the story is so addictive that I couldn't stop reading.
I wouldn't have finished this if not for needing this category for the 2021 Saphhic Reading Challenge, sadly.
I didn't mind the multiple POV, tbh. But the insta-love (or reunion love) for both couples was off putting. And there were some typos that I found distracting.
Disappointing. I was so excited to finally find a lgbt AND apocalypse book but the basic elements are so incorrect, Jackie is maddening with the back and forth, and it seems like the writer got to a point and needed more pages so they just padded it with needless tripe and very forced scenes/scenarios. It’s worth it for killing some time and the novelty of the rareness of the genre combinations but don’t expect much.
First in a series, this book jumps off the high dive and plunges you into a crisis fully invested in the characters. All the notes are hit with new relationships forming and long lost loves reunited in the midst of worldwide blackouts. These women are strong, brave, tender and kind. Set in the Pacific Northwest the tone is set where the cities are surrounded by rural areas. At times a bit surreal due to rush on stores we’ve seen during pandemic. So it’s definitely very timely. What would you do?
This is the first book from the Darkness series and follows four women who have to navigate a world together that has plummeted into darkness after a solar flare hits. Dystopian fiction was always something I gravitated towards and couple that with four strong female characters and I’m sold. This was fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable. I’m looking forward to reading how their stories unfold and what further obstacles they’ll have to face.
The end of our way of life as we know it. All lights and power go out all over and don't come back on. The Survivors pull together to make a community. Strong women lead the way. I'm hooked and have the other two books on my list to read.
