This is the first book of Joseph Falank that I’ve read, and this novella had me completely enthralled until the last lines were behind me. What a tremendous, well-written, and suspenseful study of family, mental illness, and the secrets and experiences that shape a person! Without spoiling anything, I will say that my own experiences as a serviceman in the Middle East made me empathize with one of the characters greatly—especially with what happens at the end of the novella. My reaction to it was sharp and poignant, and left tears welling in my eyes, a sure sign that a story and its characters have left their mark on me. I will also say that Falank’s description of rural Pennsylvania were outstanding. I can’t wait to delve into more of this author’s work!
