The humor dies down as the title becomes more about court intrigue and trade relations. The likable characters keep things pleasant.
The book has an anti-harem gimmick, wherein all these pretty female characters are introduced who in other romantic comedy series would immediately become love interests but are here not particularly interested in the protagonist, nor he in them. Zenjiro is a royal consort devoted to his queen.
The author whose light novel is being adapted begins offering text short stories in the back of the book. They are sort of awkward deleted scenes that do little but add an extra ten minutes to the book's read time. I could do without them but they are in the next two volumes, so I guess they are here to stay.
This series is rather interesting, if I be permitted to say so. Zenjiro, from another world, & consort to the queen! Everyone wants to gain his favor, & in the case of certain young noblewomen, they hope to catch Zenjiro's eye! I think the queen has no serious competition at the moment. She's busty, has long red hair, & is gorgeous. It's easy to see why Zenjiro is so taken with her. And she with him. His devotion to her has not gone unnoticed. I'm just waiting for the ball to drop. We all know that things are going to get dangerous for the queen & her consort. As I haven't read the light novels, I don't know what's coming, but based on the covers of the manga series, things may take a serious turn for the worse for our man Zenjiro.
This one introduces Zenjiro to the political life of the court as well as spreads politics to one of the other countries introduced, the twin kingdom. Plays on getting to him romantically around the Queen and use of court etiquette as weapons and a few future players as well. I am really enjoying this series.
This story would be a one off graphic novel if everything went according to plan. As one could imagine, the dream world is not so dreamy and issues are slowly (or sometimes quickly) bubbling up to the surface. Loads of fun and while the stakes seem to be increasing I find this a book full of adventure without seriously heavy consequences...at least up to this point.
