MacIntosh Meadows #1

The Alpha's Widower

Rate this book
What’s a guy to do when his straight best friend proposes a fake marriage? Just say — Yes!

Laurie Adams looked like he had it all, but his marriage was a sham, a Mr. Wrong chosen for all the wrong reasons. When his husband dies, Laurie has no time to mourn the cheating bastard—his in-laws have decided that Laurie isn’t fit to raise his children and they’ll do anything to take them from him. He’s lost his husband and lost his faith in people, but he won’t lose his children too. So he runs back home to the small farm town he’d left behind a decade ago.

Dean MacIntosh should be the perfect alpha for anyone, but all around town he’s known as Mr. Not-Quite-Right, the last man a woman dates before she finds her real Prince Charming. It should bother him, but it doesn’t. So when his childhood best friend comes running home for protection, Dean has no problem stepping in.

Except when Dean offered to fake-marry Laurie, he never expected the wedding kiss to feel so sweet, and he begins to question the sexuality he once took for granted. From an awkward wedding night to an even more awkward honeymoon, Dean and Laurie find their affection runs deeper than either of them ever guessed. And maybe now is Dean's chance to be somebody's Mr. Right.

This book is over 64k and contains mpreg, adults adulting in fun & sexy ways, and probably more pottymouth language than should be used in a book with kids underfoot. 18+ readers only please.

I'm a total fan of M/PREG Paranormal Romances, first and foremost as a reader. I'm excited to share my own omegaverse(s) with you. What's not to love about adorable Omegas and the Alpha men who love them? If I'm not writing about men sporting baby bumps, I'm definitely reading about them!

I'm a native of Las Vegas, NV, so I'm pre-wired to love everything weird ~ although I don't find any kind of love to be weird. I'm a cis woman who's been happily married to the same lovable lug for 18 years. We have a 16yr old son, well, at least I think we do? Either that, or we have a ghost that eats all our food and uses up all wifi playing xbox while screaming into a headset.

As a new author, it's been amazing to find the amount of support that I've been given from readers and my fellow authors. Feel free to message me, I love to chat with fellow readers. Am I a reader? Heck yeah! In fact, I'm never certain that I can completely trust an author who isn't a fellow bibliophile.

I will try to update here when I'm doing promotional parties & chats. I usually do those on Facebook. If you haven't already signed up for my newsletter, you should totally do it! I only send out NL's to announce new releases or important announcements. I also like to note in my NL what I'm currently reading along with a cover shot and the link for anyone who is interested.

I look forward to interacting with everyone here!

This book was really cute. I always enjoy reading this authors books and now that they are being put into audio I have been purchasing them all up as they come out. I thought this book is a great start to this series and I look forward to seeing more of this whole family in the next few books. I’m not sure whose book is next but I want them all to get their HEA’s.

I loved how Laurie just rolls with all the punches life gives him. He has to deal with the death of his Ex-husband and moving with 3 kids. And the bad treatment of the ex’s family members. And then coming back to his home town and learning about everything he missed in recent years. I completed Hated hearing how his ex-husband treated him. But was really glad to see that he was able to overcome all the hard times, go with the flow and make the best of it all. Dean in my opinion, was a totally clueless, but harmless idiot. Lol. I mean really, he has no idea what is in front of his face, and what was missing from his life until almost the end of the book. But he really does step up to the plate when it comes to treating Laurie’s kids like his own and I really appreciated that part of the story. I think they were made for each other it’s just a shame it took them so long to figure it all out.

I do feel I need to express my complete Dislike for Laurie’s monster-in-law. She is a horrible human being and I wish all kinds of bad karma and undesirable things to happen to her. She is a mean person right from the beginning of the book and turns out to be even worse than my initial thoughts of her were. To the point I was yelling out loud at her and her actions while listening along to this book. I really did not like any part of her, but throwing her into the mix of this book was a great plan and added more to the sweeter story.

Audio – I’m not quite sure how Susi Hawke does it, but I have to say that this author specifically always finds the Best narrators for each of her books/series. They seem to mesh perfectly along with each of the stories they are narrating and they always have the exact amount of emotion and the perfect voices for each of the books from what I think they should be in my head. My first time hearing this narrator Drew Bacca (I also think this is his first narration in general) but I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with how this one turned out. I liked hearing his voices for both of the main characters, and feel like he did great with the supporting ones as well, even the kids and female voices, which can sometimes be harder to do, and harder to listen to. Great job and I will be watching out for more of Drew’s narrations in the future.

I really liked this story ... especially the secondary characters made it fun. the main characters were well done and the storyline was nice as well.
maybe a bit of the angst in the romance could have been avoided but that was ok

so all in all a nice read

This was a really enjoyable story. I just loved Dean. I liked that he wasn't the typical alpha. He was also such a sweet guy with the biggest heart. Just what Laurie needed after the terrible 10 years he endured and the horrible “out-laws”. Dean and Laurie figuring themselves out was just so awkward and endearing. I loved that they had supportive and meddling family to help them along. The kids were also adorable. Dean licking the baby made me laugh out loud. I'm looking forward to reading Kade's story.

Well, I certainly liked it more than I thought I would! I love Friends-to-Lovers tales and this was no exception. Laurie's In-Laws were horrible, horrible people (almost charicaturisticly so) and yet I not only know someone whose In-Laws tried to do something similar, but I've heard about even more instances of this. WTF people?

Also, Dean, who - like I do with the last donut to make sure no one else eats it - licked the baby. LICKED THE BABY, so it was his. LOL. I loved him and his brother Kade...who I think is the next up for his own installment. So yay!

Anywho, I think I'm hooked on this town and can't wait to read (or listen to) more stories for their inhabitants. I think I'm gonna keep listening because New-to-Me narrator Drew Bacca turned in a really good performance and did a great job with the voices here. (Note to Librarians: Someone please add the Audible Version of the second book, including the narrator please? It doesn't show up under his name. THANKS!)

DNF @ 59% - I was enjoying this for the most part because it’s friends-to-lovers and I liked the development of their relationship on a strong basis of friendship, but initiating sex by saying “in the dark, one mouth is as good as another,” I’m done. They need to communicate cuz Dean isn’t as straight as he’s always believed; I can actually see him being demiromantic or something from comments he made about not really having romantic feelings for previous partners, but having deep emotions for Laurie. Disappointed 🙃

A lovely piece of fluff that had drama, humour and romance. Laurie is an omega dad with three children and one on the way when his husband dies. When his MIL announces that she will be taking custody of his eldest Laurie runs to the sanctuary of his grandfather's ranch. Dean, the manager is Laurie's childhood best friend and romance soon simmers between the two. A HEA ending of course but watch out for interfering old women!!

Pretty much an omegaverse fairytale. The story is light hearted, there’s the knight in shining armour and the villainous mother in law. Easy to get into, enjoyable with a fluffy HEA.

Laurie is a father of 3 children when his husband is killed in a car accident. We find out that there were many problems with their marriage, and his mother-in-law is atrocious! I had so much anxiety reading the beginning of this book because this woman was so evil. I was worried about angst level potential with her, but thankfully it wasn't that bad (of course, not for lack of her trying lol). Laurie goes back to his hometown after the funeral to escape the threat of the MIL threatening to take his children away. His childhood best friend is still there, and it is like they had never been apart. Dean is a calm, loving, and supportive friend. When push comes to shove, he offers to marry Laurie as a way to keep custody of his kids. As time moves forward, however, he finds that his love for his friend can translate to a complete real marriage, not just friendship only feelings. It took a little while for Dean to realize it all, but when he did, they were very sweet together. I loved Dean with the kids, and Laurie was an awesome father.

I loved all of the secondary characters (other than the ones we are supposed to hate because they are evil). The brothers and grandparents were awesome. I'm looking forward to reading/listening to more from this family. The narration was very well done.

I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC provided by LesCourt Author Services, and listened to the audio production of this book

Alpha & Omega

I loved this book so much! From page one I was hooked I especially love how well the storyline played out and the emotional side of it. With Laurie widowed with three kids and another on the way going home was easy for him. Reconnecting with his childhood best friend and relying on him for help. Especially when the in laws from hell threatened to take his kids away.

Character breakdown:

Laurie; I admired this father doing his best for his children and moving on with his life. Returning home and realizing he had all the love and help he needed. I especially enjoyed how great he was with his children and his chemistry with Dean.

Dean: boy talk about turning your world upside down, I loved how quickly he adapted and became so much to Laurie and his kids. He seemed like an honorable guy and very loving at that. I loved that he didn't need to blink twice when he needed to help Laurie and he was funny.

The book grabs you and will keep you laughing, crying or a little nervous for what happens next. Great read great time spent.

P.S. Food in the bedroom? Yes please!!

Marriage: Fake It Until We Make It

I've read four of Susi Hawke's Hollydale Omegas series books. An ARC in exchange for an honest review was an easy "Yes!" I didn't know what to expect and I was greatly surprised by what I encountered. I love "Family" stories, especially those involving Single / Widowed Gay Fathers. This story was such an easy read. The story flowed as we followed Laurie (Lawrence) and his children. It's told in alternating chapters and third person POVs. So we get the points of view of Laurie and his former Alpha best friend Dean MacIntosh. We also get to know some very interesting secondary characters: Dean's brothers, cousin, and grandmothers. Laurie's grandfather and others he thought didn't care or were upset about his long absence.

Laurie was a Single Father inside of his marriage. His husband kept him pregnant, at home, away from family, and friends. Struggling economically despite the money he made as well as the money his family had. He was an excellent father, he went without in order to insure his children did not suffer. Despite how rude and crude his "Outlaws" were towards the second two children & Laurie versus their firstborn grandson.

Dean's love life was a joke. He couldn't find a woman to settle down with. Something always went wrong. But to Laurie's chagrin his best friend was undeniably Straight. He wouldn't even consider dating a male Omega because there was absolutely no attraction. But when Laurie and his kids returned home Dean was right there from the very beginning helping with the kids 100X more than Laurie's husband ever did.

When Laurie's custody of his children as a widowed Omega without any means of support is threatened, his BFF stepped in with the offer of a fake marriage. But despite the subterfuge real feelings were beginning to emerge. Everyone around them not only saw it, but encouraged it. The children blossomed with the affection and attention showered on them by Dean and his family. Even though they inherited farm chores.

Mpreg fans need not worry. There is a mpregnancy with all the challenges and wonders that come along with it. But this is a favorite trope of mine: a stepfather that takes on the responsibility of not one, but several children and becomes a true Stepdad beloved by the youngsters.

This was such a great book. I loved it. I am happy to learn that it is the first of a series with the MacIntosh Brothers. I didn't want to give to much away just enough to pique your interest. There was sweetness and tenderness, villainy and cruel comments about a disabled, but quite happy child. It was overwhelming to Laurie to have someone to lean on, the way Dean was always eager to do. I am so happy l got the chance to read Susi Hawke's book and share a little of it with you.

This was a first time author for me and I adored this book! It was super sweet and I loved the whole family dynamic. It was so easy to just connect with Laurie and his kids from the first chapter because of how sweet and genuine they were.

I felt like the dialogue was very authentic to the story. I could tell that Laurie and Dean had grown up together and had been best friends. Dean and Laurie were super cute together and the evolution of their relationship was perfect. The way Dean was with Matty, Chris and Kiki.... my heart grew ten sizes... so cute! Even though Laurie was earnest af and sweet as pie, he was not afraid to throw the sass which I love.

I definitely recommend this book and I am eager to keep reading from this series!

Susi Hawke is a very new author to me. I have always enjoyed listening to MM romances and this did not disappoint. The format was a bit different. This book read as a diary rather then a book. I felt as though this was Laurie and Dean's personal thoughts and feelings. I felt as though I was intruding on a love story. I know when an author makes you feel a though you are part of the story it makes you feel like you are committed to what is going on with the couple. I love the narrator and I hope that he is going to continuing narrating this series.

This is story had cute kids, family drama, and just craziness. This is a great story and I hope that this series gets better.

Nice cute story. I love a story where everything works out. This was a friend to lovers story. I loved the journey. Love the small town crazy family setting. The writing was good, some of the conversation was weird, but the smexy was nice. I liked the story until the end. In the end it was like that Mc got meaner, snarky? I don’t know but his character changed. And also note, please don’t “pre cook” chicken in the microwave. That’s just eww. No one does that and if they did that just shows why you can’t eat everyone’s food eww.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I'm not against the whole Omega plot or male pregnancy but on the other hand it really isn't something I really like or would seek out. I did like the characters and the plot was pretty interesting. I did think the villain was obvious and wondered why the characters didn't catch on but it's not a showstopper.

This was absolute fluff and I loved it!!! There was just enough drama to keep it from being too sappy, but otherwise, I listened to the entire thing with a sappy smile on my face. There were plenty of laughs, crazy family moments, and a few moments that made me wish you could vote to kill off characters for their cruelty. I am eager to see how the rest of Dean's brothers' stories turn out!

A nice read. It's a little "write by the numbers" imo. It's not bad, but very what you expect. There's some moments where the characters are dumber than dirt for no other reason than the plot demands they be. The villain is such an over the top caricature of a villain. It's irksome but minor. The romance is decent, I like the second chance love story.

Not a fan of omega verse genre but its’ Susi Hawke’s book! It was very a bit over the top. How come they didn’t realize the had a traitor among them??!! Such plots just leave me frustrated. Love the kids.
But love Kade! Defiantly will be looking forward to read his HEA.

I've tried a couple of books from this author but sadly her writing style just isn't for me. It always comes off as amateurish and too saccharine. The plot was good but the execution was not.

Hokey writting

Ok storey. Couldn't help finishing it, but it was more like a practice piece than the finished product. This author has good writing skills, but has to work on character development and focusing on showing her story and cutting out the excessive description of events not adding to the plot. I love omegaverse stories, but sometimes it feels like the Author doesn't spend that extra time polishing it past just okay.

Darn - I thought I had written this review! Well, I really enjoyed the book. Whilst the culprit/s was obvious to blind Freddie, it was still a great feel-good story. And the kids were adorable. I would definitely read more in this series when the mood strikes.

Just what I needed....

I desperately needed a good MPreg book. I swear if I go too long between them, I get all out of sorts. I love my Omegas. This book was exactly what I needed. It had the perfect best friend/love interest, adorable kids, sweet meddling family members and a strong Omega. It also had an evil mother-in-law that I wanted to throw in a manure pile. Ugh! What a wretched excuse for a woman.

I loved that Laurie took his babies home. Watching them thrive at the farm and make Laurie's grandpa happy again was so sweet. Seeing them call for Papa Dean was even better. But best of all was watching Laurie and Dean move from best friends to lovers. I was rooting for them the whole way. I think my favorite part would have to be the wedding where Dean was just starting to really see Laurie. Makes me smile just thinking about it.

I loved Dean's brothers too.I think Zeke has a quite story waiting to be told and I'm really looking forward to it, but I need Kade's story like yesterday. That boy lit up every page he was on and I cannot wait to see him meet his match! It's going to be deliciously fun to read!

REREAD - 5/13/19

I loved this book just as much the second time around. I love the friendship between Dean and Laurie and how their feelings for each other bubble up to the surface. They were so cute together. I love how the whole family gets involved and supports them. This book just makes me feel good. It's one that I'd definitely read again and again.

Pure fun and lovable fluff read. Where the evil ones were pure evil, and the others where cotton candy sweet. And as predictable as it was I did enjoy it. A good story about family, best friends, and a small county town. It’ll be interesting to read what happens to Dean’s brothers.

The Alpha's Widower

Laurie is a super sweet beta who happened to choose the wrong man and got stuck in a bad relationship. He can’t bring himself to regret his choices however because he got three beautiful kids that he adores out of it. After the unexpected death of his husband he runs back home to live with his grandfather, where he runs into his old best and alpha friend Dean. Their friendship instantly picks up where they left off with the same great connection and closeness that they’d always had growing up. When Laurie’s in-laws come around trying to take the kids from him and things go awry Dean jumps in to help him save his family. Will it just be for pretences though?

This is an Omegaverse/mpreg story however I feel like those aspects play a pretty minor roll in the plotline, so if your nervous about trying either of those aspects I wouldn’t hesitate at all to pick this one up. It would be a great soft intro into those universes.

Overall the story was very cute and sweet. The angst was presented and handled in a way that it wasn’t too much and stayed light and didn’t loose the lighter fuzzy feel of the book. It mostly focused on the connection between the two guys which I really loved seeing develop. The friends to lovers troupe developed very well and it was great to see how that grew between them. I loved Laurie from the start, it was clear what a loving, nurturing, sweet guy he was. How he handled all that he went though without becoming jaded just made me love him even more. Getting to see the slow and steady way that Dean fell for his best friend was so well done that I got all swoony several times, it was a little bit of a slow burn but I didn’t mind at all. These two were great together. The story progressed well and I ended up listening to it in a day because I couldn’t hit pause.

This was my first time listening to Drew Bacca’s narration and I thought he was fantastic! It’s only title currently on audible he narrates which makes me very sad but I am intending to stalk him for more because he was great and I’m hoping to get some more soon!

It was a great lighter read, so if you’re looking for something sweet and easy then check it out!

Rant incoming ~

I blame my rarely seen masochistic side for finishing this… this. It’s not that the plot is terrible, it’s the writing. I couldn’t connect or emphasise with anyone or anything that happened in the novel, you know, the whole omegaverse thingy notwithstanding. It’s just, sigh, the characters seemed like products of an online random personality generator. The dialogues were… idek. Fictional. Unnatural. Forced? The way the characters behaved in some scenes made me roll my eyes so hard it wasn’t even funny. “All over the place” comes to mind when I think of those. The whole thing is so ridiculous—and it has nothing to do with mpreg, oh the irony—that I couldn’t feel anything even when shit was going down.

On the plus side, I kinda liked Dean. He was way more interesting, almost three-dimensional (especially compared to others). Most importantly, he was really laidback and attentive, unlike many other fictional “alphas”, you know, that privileged abusive asshole type some authors love to worship (gross btw). Dean alone is the reason it’s 3 stars and not 2. Also, nothing made me scream or rage or hate the world—that helped, too. I needed a break.

In conclusion, it’s my first novel by the author and I’ve got to say, I’m not terribly impressed. Just not my cup of tea. All I’ve learnt is that the author has most likely birthed a baby and that their taste in names is questionable.

Full disclosure: I’m not in a good mood today so I’m side-eyeing my own review right now... Who knows, maybe I’ll want to read the sequel tomorrow just for the heck of it. I’m a fickle reader.

P.S. I got the impression the leads were a blue-eyed blonde and a green-eyed ginger. What’s up with this cover? (I might be wrong; their appearances were mentioned …once (?) and I cba to go back and check.)
