Darcy Campbell was a laid-off Chicago music teacher who took a job playing at a piano bar out of desperation. She’d had a run of bad luck and was already having another bad day…but it turned disastrous when she was the only witness to a mass murder. She watched in horror as her boss, his son, and other employees were gunned down before her eyes.
The police promised to protect her identity if she testified against the monsters that had committed the massacre. But her name somehow was discovered and threats immediately fired in her direction. Detective Nick Baker promised to protect her and when things got hot he hid her away in his cabin in the backwoods of Wisconsin. Darcy wasn’t sure what the bigger danger was – the killer hunting her or falling in love with the man who vowed to protect her.
She couldn’t love a police officer. She refused to love a police officer. It was nearly impossible to resist him, though, with his intense silver eyes and brawny body. He was like a drug, addictive and sinfully potent. Somehow she needed to protect her heart from him while he protected her from the deranged killers.

Was she brave enough to confront both dangers?
Nick is book 1 in the steamy Brothers in Blue Series
This story is about a woman, Darcy, who's been touched with tragic events in her life, the most powerful of which was her policeman father being killed in the line of duty. Her mother, a rather weak woman, had never recovered from that tragedy and had herself been killed, this time by a violent boyfriend when Darcy was a teenager. This has shaped her entire thought process regarding police and marriage. Nick is a cop, as is his entire family - brothers, father, sisters. He meets her at the scene of yet another tragedy in her life, when she witnesses a cartel hit. Although the blurb for this book said mafia, this is about cartel hitmen, bosses, and drug runners.
The book's story has promise, but it was written in a simplistic style that didn't do the story justice. That style also affected the reading of the book about midway through when Darcy and Nick finally succumb to the chemistry between them. The sex in the book is somewhere in between hot and not, leaning on the hot side but not quite getting there.
I would give this story 3-1/2 stars. Part of the reason is that the character of Darcy is rather juvenile at times during the book. She wasn't all that well developed. For example, page after page we read that she won't ever get involved with a cop. She is hiding from the cartel in a house in the woods with....a cop. And he's attracted to her but not coming on strong. So this is written: "She managed to keep her own libido under control, so they hadn't had any clashes yet." That sentence made no sense to me and there were a couple others like it. And "clashes" isn't how I would describe a coming-together of a couple who might be feeling a lot of chemistry. I got that she was attracted, but her own reaction to being attracted was confused at times. One particular passage that I won't reveal, but I WILL comment on - if the cartel broke into my home and I was going to be testifying against me, they wouldn't be asking me to make breakfast, just sayin'. When she left the note on the chair (and I won't tell you what chair, where the chair was, or why the chair was there because I'm not marking this as being a spoiler), I was disappointed in her and felt she was being cowardly and weak. I also thought the ending might need some work, although I understood that it was leading into Book 2. So Nick and Darcy have an end, but not a complete ending as they would have had if the book wasn't part of a series.
Laid-off music teacher, Darcy, takes a ob playing piano at a bar. All is going fairly well, until she witnesses the brutal murder of her boss, his son and all of the employees at the bar. As the lone survivor, Darcy must be willing to testify against the killer...that is, unless the killer gets to her first. When her identity is leaked, Detective Nick Baker must keep Darcy safe until the trial. After an attempt is made on her life, Nick decides to hide Darcy away in his family's cabin. Neither counts on giving in to the mutual attraction but that is what happens. Nick believes that Darcy is 'the one', but Darcy is holding firm in her commitment to never date/marry a cop. Events from her childhood has lead her to take this stance. When Nick is almost killed protecting Darcy, will she change her mind and stick around or will this prove her point that life with a cop will only bring heartache? This is a quick romantic suspense, with loveable characters and I can't wait for the stories of Nick's brothers! We do eventually get an HEA, after some begging...won't say who begged...lol. I voluntarily accepted a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What I liked... the length: 3 hrs 11 min, because it was perfect for a quick listen while I did chores. The sexy brothers! The general story.
What was not so great... the cop who sleeps with a victim in his protective custody without thinking once about it being a conflict of interest? Hmmm... The abrupt ending. Gimme an epilogue or something.
The narrator for the audio version, Lissa Blackwell, was doing really good up until around Chapter 20. Her recordings have a hollow sound (not enough noise baffling where she records) and background noises (thumps on the table or mic, and a couple of playbacks.) Around Chapter 20 it sounded like she was rushing at times, and then breathing mid-sentence. I know this is all picky, but she has a lot more potential! This recording was made in 2018, so maybe it's improved since then. (I just noticed that she records exclusively for Simone Carter. Interesting.)
I'm looking forward to the rest of the series, and I'm hopeful it will jump up into the 4 star range for me. (From "liked it" to "really liked it".)
You had me at silver eyes! Something about dark hair with that color eyes intrigues me, and when Darcy took a request from the man with silver eyes, I was drawn into the story. When her set is over, she goes back to get ready to leave and witnesses a horrific murder. Now being sought out as a the lone witness, Nick, the silver eyed police officer is going to protect her with his own life. Simone Carter melds the perfect amount of suspense and romance together without that feeling of insta-love. It is an attraction that grows, and as the danger intenses so does their feelings for each other. But Darcy can't love a man in blue. Or can she? The introduction of Nick's siblings adds some depth and humor to the story as well, rounding the book out. This is a great start to this series.
Liisa Blackwell gives a great performance as usual. She is able to give the story the thrilling suspense along with the emotional turmoil. She paces the story well and has a variety of voices to enjoy.
This is the first book in the Brothers in Blue Series. This is a short Romantic Suspense. I like short stories! The plot is interesting, suspenseful and kept my attention from the first page to the end. This story is well developed despite its length. Darcy is a strong and sweet woman. Nick is a handsome detective who protects her after she received threats. He's handsome, gentleman and very protective. Their chemistry is strong. I love their HEA. The secondary characters are also interesting and I hope to see them again in the other books in the Series. I can't wait to listen to thes stories of Nick's Brothers. The narration was great. Lissa Blackwell has a sweet voice, easy to listen. I enjoyed my listening. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
Who wouldn't want a hot sexy policeman in protective mode? No idea? Me either.
Poor Darcy is in one hell of a pickle but luckily Nick is more than willing to protect her, and the chemistry? Hot, really hot!
But things are far from easy with a mob connected murder trying to prevent Darcy from testifying against him. It also doesn't help that Darcy is convinced that falling for a policeman will inevitably bring loss, so the romance is far from smooth sailing.
There's a good balance of romance and fun with tension and worry, I'd listen to it again.
The delivery is well done, good pacing and the character voices were great.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
An entertaining story with some suspense. Having listened to the story vs reading it; I find myself wondering if it would have been more suspenseful if I had read it. This story is a good example of how a narrator can effect the story. While Lissa Blackwell has a pleasant voice, it is consistently calm. Yes, her rate of speech increased at appropriate times but the edge was minimal. At least to my ear. Either that or the writing didn't lend itself to it.
Over all a good story. I did get a little frustrated with Darcy's negative self talk at times.
*Sigh* Based on the blurb, I was expecting a much better story than I got. The premise of the story worked for me, but the execution was pretty bad. Because it was a shorter story, there was too much going on and not enough character build up. Nick seems like a nice guy, but we don’t really get to know him. Darcy has had a rough road leading up to the murder she witnessed, but comes off as incredibly naïve and, at time, senseless. This book is dripping with potential, it just needs to be better explored to give this story and its characters a fighting chance.
Nick (Brothers in Blue #1) by Simone Carter was another great read by the author. Darcy is at another day at work. Little does she know by the end of her shift, things are going to drastically change. She see's the mass murder of her co-workers. Nick is one of the responding officers that night and vows to protect Darcy. This was another great read by Simone Carter and I can't wait to read more of this series.
For a quick read the author did really great with developing the story that had plenty of suspense.
Darcy was already down on her luck when she witnessed a horrible murder at her work. This story continued at a perfect pace, not rushed and I felt like it was complete by the end. I would have liked to get a little more character development with Nick but it didn't take from the story line.
This may be a quick listen, but you wouldn’t know it with all the action and suspense you will find here. Nick is such a great person as well as a cop and Darcy is so brave and strong to face what she has to. I loved listening to the progression of how their feelings towards each other grew each day and the suspense that kept you on your toes until the end.
Darcy said she would never love a police officer but then she witnessed several murders and has to go into hiding with an officer. They start a relationship but he is shot while protecting her and she runs. Can she accept his love or will she let the past rule her life.
4.5 stars ✨ A lovely and cosy story. It’s short, but has everything in it: likeable smart characters, romance with slow burn, some action, satisfying end.
I absolutely loved the premise for this book and could not wait to really dive into the story. Darcy inadvertently witnesses the murder of her boss and several other people at a club lounge where she plays piano. She meets the detective assigned to the case, Nick. By now, readers are aware that Darcy's father was a police officer killed in the line of duty. After her father's death, her mother spiraled out of control, and Darcy seems to have never recovered from this. Darcy's constant inner dialogue of how she would never date/marry a cop because she refuses to end up like her mother was a bit much. As if she didn't tell herself that enough, she'd repeat this over and over to her best friend, then Nick, Nick's family, and anyone else who would listen that she won't marry a cop.
For the most part, I liked this story. I think that the writing style felt a bit off somehow. Maybe I'm being too picky, but some of the wording or phrases--possibly sentence structure didn't flow as smoothly, and the emotion felt a little forced. The intimate scenes were just on the edge of hot, before fizzling out. As an avid romance reader, I was really rooting for Darcy and Nick. I'm not opposed to reading the other books in this series. I'm interested in the direction that the author is going in for the rest of the Brothers in Blue.
Audio book review This is book 1 in the series. Lots of twits and turns and full of mystery. Love how the author took a situation that was full of attraction for the couple and brought them together in another situation.
