I enjoyed this installment in the Madigan Amos Zoo Mysteries. I'm reading the series out of order so I think I missed a few steps along the way. I love the zoo settings, and I'm glad that Madi and Auryn got together. Any books that feature animals is a great book for me!
Chameleons and a Corpse is another good installment in the Madigan Amos Zoo Mysteries. Again, she owes a lot to Charlaine Harris, as this book borrows from Poppy Done to Death, though not nearly at the level that led me to give A Memory for Murder 1* for the plagiarism. I like the characters and the relationships between them. This one has loose ends, like who is Pierce the PR person? But overall it's a decent book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I don't like the romance between auryn and Madigan. I liked his character at first but now it just bugs me. I can't put my finger on why but I think hes just quite immature.
The mystery was good this time. I did wonder about the murderer but wasn't fully set on them being the ones that had done it.
Crazy book and a great ending! I’m sorry that Timmy got murdered, he seemed like a fun person. The mystery was cool and I especially enjoyed trying to figure out who it was. I’m happy that this book didn’t remind me of any movies that I’ve seen like the past two did. That was especially pleasing.
Also, I’m happy that Madi and Auryn’s relationship is working. And things are looking up for Tiff! This book was filled with lots of good things for these characters.
I especially liked the mysterious ending. Yaaaay!!! Can’t wait for the next book. Too bad the series ending is coming soon.
Parrots and Payback (a prequel) - A cute, little prequel about another day at the zoo with some of our favorite characters. A quick read where readers familiar with Mad's zoo will know what's going on. I personally would read this after The Peacock's Poison, but that's how I did it. LOL. 5*
Penguins and Mortal Peril #1 - A good thriller. A well written, intriguing suspense with a well thought out, twisting plot and believable characters. There's interesting information about the zoo and its animals. Madi is an intelligent, caring person, especially with the animals, and takes loving care of the zoo. There's also humor; beware of furry pyschos. The animals are a good part of the story and some even have their own personalities. I finished the book in one sitting, immersed in the mystery. If you liked Blooming, you'll like this book, too. 5*
The Silence of the Snakes #2 - Spellbinding! Ruby just gets better with each book she writes. A well written, intriguing suspense with believable characters and a plot that doesn't let the reader put down the book until the last page. This is a substantial story, not a weak cozy, that would make Christie proud to write. Don't let this series pass you by, they're must reads. 5*
Murder is a Monkey's Game #3 - Another well written, intriguing suspense this time set in France. There's an interesting plot that holds the reader's attention, although a bit slower when compared to the previous two books. The characters are still interesting and the relationships between the characters are realistic and entertaining. While not necessary since each book is a standalone, I would recommend reading the books in order. Madi's story is continuously evolving and her growth as a character, too. I contacted the author to review her work many books ago. 5*
Lions and the Living Dead #4 - Her best book yet! This is a substantial and intriguing suspense with a well written, fast paced plot and believable characters. The main characters continue to evolve and the new characters are developed enough to have weight. The descriptions and storylines are vivid and full. The dialog realistic. The story flows from page to page making it difficult to put the book down. I stayed up late to finish it. 5*
The Peacock's Poison #5 - Another well written, well thought out story with our Madi and her crew. A longer book than usual, but just as substantial, that keeps the reader immersed in the pages until the end. Someone did their homework and makes it look bad for Madi. Poor dummy, bad move. Each book in the series gets better and the books always have you thinking. I watched this author mature as an author and her work doesn't disappoint. I have to recommend this series as must reads. Start with Penguins #1 to meet Madi and finish with Lions. If these are the only two books of the series you read, you picked well. But don't miss out on Silence and Monkey's Game. Sequentially is how they should be read, but it's not necessary, they're all standalones. 5*
A Memory for Murder #6 - Oh my gosh! This book has it all: intrigue; romance; subterfuge; romance; stings; murders; and the list goes on. Every book in this series gets better and better, and this is the "betterest". The amazing plot swings the reader in every direction; yah, some things are figured out, but there are some characters that are questionable. The characters, old and new, are interesting, have grown or have enough background where needed. Their dialog is realistic and there's no stupidity in second guessing or questioning everything - just straight thoughts and actions. I couldn't put this book down until I had finished it. The is the most substantial book by Ms. Loren and I'm looking forward to #7. I'm happy I volunteered to review her work. She has immense growth as an author since the first book I read by her, Snowed In With Death. 5*
Whales and a Watery Grave #7 – What what a way to die! Sorry, but the murder of this victim is extremely different from the usual murders found in other mystery books, which complicates the investigation. Ms. Loren does another fabulous job with this book, its characters and the murder itself. Well written, intriguing and suspenseful, the story line holds the reader glued to the pages, which zip by quickly. There’s continued growth with our favorite characters and the new characters are developed enough to either like or dislike them. The animal characters always add something to the stories. A simple, relaxing holiday in Mallorca isn’t in the cards for Madi and Auryn with the complex, intriguing murder, there’s suspects everywhere. I contacted the author to review her books and I’m so glad I did. She has never disappointed me and she grows as a writer instead of putting out the same dribble as some other “writers” do. For maximum enjoyment, start with the first book, but just start one of her books. I recommend the January Chevalier series as well as Madigan’s series. 5*
Chameleon and A Corpse #8 - Another well written, intriguing novel filled with suspense and humor. The author is still coming up with a well developed plan for the new and original zoos, spanning several books now. As the original zoo develops into its own character, our favorite characters are still realistic and likable, developing into more facets as books are added to the series. The animal characters always add something to the stories and of course, they’re still around in the books. I missed this book through a snafu. I've already read the last two books after this one, but that didn't stop Chameleon from being interesting and intriguing. Although I knew Tiff was engaged, I didn't know the path traveled to her engagement. This book is well written, suspenseful and intriguing. I've never been disappointed by any book in this series. I've see this lovely lady grow into a good writer and I've read some of her first books, before and after she reworked and improved them. 5*
Foxes and Fatal Attraction #9 - I just love the expressions of the fox and the hound, such a funny cover; it makes you wonder what has the clever fox happy and the hound worried. Well the story does give you that info. Another intriguing, substantial murder mystery with all of our favorite characters and the return of an old favorite or two, of which one brings even more secrets and subterfuge to Madi's present and future. The animals still play a large part in the story and add to the humor, which blends in well with the drama and intrigue. Another wonderful addition to a great series. 5*
Monday's Murderer #10 - I took 2 days to savor this book since it's the last of the series. Monday's has several storylines, past and present, that keeps this book difficult to put down. The suspense with the happenings and multiple characters and their parts, and the intrigue about how all the parts will play out involve the reader immensely. There are surprises, misdirections and a touch of sexual tension, along with a crime that sadly I never thought about since it's not publicized. I will miss Madi and her crew, but the ride was fun. I will admit I think the last chapter was a bit rushed, but all the bases were covered. I'm looking forward to what comes Ms. Loren next and in the future. She has grown so much with her writing skills and it's been a pleasure to watch her growth just in the past 18 months. 5*
In Chameleons And A Corpse, Madi is once again thrown into a murder investigation when Auyrn's invited to join the local secret society/gentleman's club. Madi's low opinion of the club does not improve when she finds another proposed inductee dead. Also, her zoo is almost ready to open, and she must tie up last minutes details. Hiring Pierce as her PR person, she not sure what he does around the zoo other hang around Tiff. Then hiring Gabby for the "creepy insects," she finds Gabby raises chameleons by the hoards and is a chameleon fanatic; she wonders if all will come together in time for the opening.
Can Madi solve a murder, get the Lucky Zoo going, solve staff problems, and plan her wedding before time is up? My book reviews follow.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
As always Ruby Loren crafted an entertaining, intriguing mystery. I loved getting a glimpse into the closed society club. I find it more laughable than productive, even though they have high power in the commercial community. As a result, they have no issue with using that power. Most of them do not seem to have a moral compass in business or personal relationships. Oh my, everyone seems "to be having it on" with everyone but their spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend. With a cast of characters who see nothing wrong with affairs, lies, theft, or even murder, I was totally involved in the storyline. Just as I thought a character might have redeeming characteristics, they would disappoint me. Each had reasons to hate and murder the victim, Timmy. Personally, I am not sure how he managed to stay alive as long as he did; or for that matter any of the sordid characters.
As always, included alongside murder are fantastic animals for our entertainment and education. Rameses, the Pharaoh Hound, is quite a character and Lucky, of course, must stand her ground with the royal hound. Will a peaceful resolution between Rameses and Lucky be forthcoming?
With multiple-layer plotting, realistic characters, and an easy to read writing style, this tale kept me glued to the pages. Having read the earlier stories, I love the reappearing characters. Of course, we get another look at MI-5 and Madie's paranoia of being watched by them. Then again, maybe it's not paranoia. Madi gets to meet her old nemesis, Detective Treesden, and he doesn't think any more of her now than he did when he retired.
MY OPINION:
The scenes transition smoothly, and the writing flows well. Furthermore, I found the story easy to follow without bumpy or jerky prose. As usual, Ruby Loren sprinkled humor throughout this tale. I laughed and laughed when Detective Gregory and Pierce fought over Tiff. Has Tiff finally found her man? Hmm, you will have to read this story to find out. As usual, I did not ferret out the killer; I found their identity a surprise of enormous proportions. A cozy mystery is one of my favorite genres and Ruby Loren pens a superb cozy. I love this tale and would not hesitate to buy it for myself and a friend. I would recommend reading the entire series to anyone who enjoys clean well-written storylines.
CHAMELEONS AND A CORPSE RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4
ALSO PLEASE NOTE:
Additionally, I received a copy from the author. I chose to review the novel with honest book reviews voluntarily. Lastly, reviews of any novel are dependent on the author’s opinion. Consequently, all book reviews online and on my blog, are my opinions.
This is book eight in the Madi and Avery Zoo series. This time the book starts with Auryn being inducted into a secret men only society, Along with his old school friend Timmy, and Madi gets to go along as Auryn’s guest. Madi thinks they are all very stuffy and mostly old men with anti-female views of old! Auryn believes he can use his old school friends and new contacts from the society to help with both of their zoos.
Of course, with Madi along, it isn’t long until a murder occurs and she is in the thick of it. Along with running her zoo – The Lucky Zoo, named after the stray cat she rescued, Madi also is being pushed to finish her second book by her publisher and still keep her online fans happy with her comic. She is trying to get the publicity for the new zoo going to promote it, but not take away business from Auryn and Avery Zoo.
They concentrate on a new event and also have to try and take their own relationship to the next step. Something not easy to do with their busy lives, as they found when they were supposed to be on holiday. Bring in some new hires for Madi’s new zoo, one who brings along their own chameleons and quite a bit of chaos surrounds Madi and co.
Another great read from the author, more into the murder and mystery, rather than the actual zoos this time, but we are getting to see the relationships expand and the main characters gain more depth and us more insight into what they are and do. We still get to hear lots about what Lucky the cat gets up to as well. Some former acquaintances make a brief return and Madi’s relationship with the police starts with the normal accusations against her, for finding a body yet again, and then gets some assistance from Tiff and her love life.
I love reading these books and can’t wait for the next. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above. Bring on the next ones !
Another well-written, fun mystery that keeps you guessing to the end in the Zoo series! Madi has a lot on her plate with getting her zoo staffed and finished, having the craft event up and running smoothly at both zoos and making wedding plans with Auryn, setting the date and getting the restaurant completed at Avery Zoo so they can have it up and running, making money and using it for their wedding venue. She definitely doesn't need to get involved in any problems or murders! Auryn and his friend Timmy are going to be inducted in a Gentlemen's Only exclusive club and their friend Jon, who is a member, will be picking Madi, Auryn and Timmy up to take them there. Only one problem, Timmy calls Auryn, Madi picks up and he tells her to let everyone know he will be there but he had an errand to do first. When Auryn gets inducted but Timmy never shows, Jon, Madi and Auryn decide to stop on the way home at Timmy's house to see what was going on. Madi and Auryn went up to the house and found the door unlocked. They had a bad feeling about what might have happened, but they went in and Madi took the upstairs while Auryn took the downstairs to look for Timmy or what might have happened to him. As luck would have it Auryn found him dead on the kitchen floor and his dog full of blood. So they called the police and the investigation begins. And of course, Madi investigates on her own, it's in her DNA! To add to the fun, her best friend Tiff has the new police chief and one of Madi's staff courting her. This mystery keeps you guessing until the very end and it is a surprise! Also, there is an interesting cliff hanger at the very end and I can't wait for the next book to see how it plays out! I received and ARC from the author, but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I hate to say it, but I was a little disappointed in this one. On the plus side, it had the elements that have made the Madi Amos series one of my favorites. The mystery kept me guessing and the characters are colorful enough to be interesting but not cartoonish. The minus side was a problem. Usually in cozy mysteries, that's a deal breaker for me, guaranteeing that I won't be reading the next in the series. I don't know if that was an issue in the early Madi Amos novels, as I started the series at book #5.
That said, I still liked this story enough that I only knocked a star off for it. The series has been enjoyable enough in general that I will give it another chance, too. I just hope that flaw doesn't continue in the following ones.
There is a lot going on. Madi is hiring people to staff her zoo, getting the restaurant finished at the Avery Zoo, getting the Craft Event set up for both zoos, and she and Auryn are making their wedding plans. She doesn't need any problems to pop up. Their friend Jon arrives to pick up Madi and Auryn. They're also supposed to pick up Auryn's friend Timmy but he called to tell them he had to do something and would be there a little later. Auryn and Timmy are to be inducted into an exclusive Gentleman's Only Club. Timmy never shows up. They decide they should stop at Timmy's and find out what is going on. They find him on the kitchen floor dead. Who would want to kill Timmy? And why? As busy as Madi is she just has to investigate. Get a copy and come along on this roller coaster ride of twists and turns to find out how Madi solves this case and takes care of her zoo. Find out why her self important PR man quits. This story is well thought out and well written. The story flows. I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.
This thoroughly engaging series continues with this very enjoyable mystery in which Madi gets drawn (yet again) into investigating a murder, this time of a rather annoying serial philanderer who is supposed to be joining a local men-only club together with Madi's fiancee Auryn. Once again Ruby Loren has managed to craft a great story with a clever plot, which doesn't stop twisting and turning right to the end, and believable very well drawn characters, including some who have appeared in all the books in this series.
Don't worry if you haven't read the rest of the series as this works perfectly well as a stand-alone, although knowing the background from the earlier books does make it a more rewarding read.
There is a small cliff-hanger right at the end of the book, and normally I would dock it a star for that, but the rest of the book is so good, and it is a very small cliff-hanger so I am prepared to overlook it this time.
Madi is, as ever, busy, dashing between zoos, organising craft fairs, putting off thinking about the wedding, whilst Auryn is on the verge of joining a secret society...just what she needs...not!
Madi's already low opinion of secret societies in general, and this one in particular, sinks even further when a murder is committed, and Auryn and she find the body.
Before you know it Madi is involved in tracking down a killer.
The plot flows along smoothly, and the characters are all well written, both the ones we have come to love, and the new ones, although it would appear that Madi's reputation amongst the police has preceded her!
There are lots of twists and red herrings, making this a satisfying mystery....and there is a bonus....Madi and Auryn finally set a date for the wedding!!
Madigan is preparing to open her new zoo, and her new restaurant. In which she and Auryn have a side bet as to which will be profitable first.
After being embarrased by being inducted into a men's only club along with a childhood friend who didn't deem it important enough to show up. Auryn and Madi stop by Timmy Marsden's home to find out why he was a no show. They discover his body by the door in the kitchen.
Madi hires a self important person to be in charge of the PR for her zoo and restaurant, she also hire a reptile and insect keeper who seems to care nothing about andything else than her animals.
A fun tale with multiple suspects as to the murderer due to an open marriage arrangement.
At this point, it will come as no surprise at all that this is a wonderfully written book, amusing and entertaining.
Here there is a lot of stuff that feels like closure: Maddy is getting her Zoo ready for opening day, and her wedding with Auryn has finally a definitive date. But, of course, nothing goes smoothly when it comes to her. There is a murder (of course!); a new, presumptuous PR person; someone hired to take care of insects and reptiles; and lots of fun along the pages.
This is another fantastic addition to the series, with a great set of characters, a good plot and suspense enough to keep you glued to the pages until the end. As always with this author, and particularly with this series, this is a very recommended read.
Madigan is on fine form as she tackles the murder of one of her fiancé's friends, a member of the English gentry notorious for his extra-marital affairs. This last expanded the number of suspects, but I found it as disquieting as Madi did. The murder isn't zoo-related this time, but zoo management takes up a lot of her time. Apart from a little contretemps with some chameleons, the chief new animals are dogs – a Pharaoh Hound and a Weimaraner, one of which becomes Auryn and Madi's dog by the end (that's not too spoiler-y, is it?). There is an interesting mix of old and new characters, and it's also good to see the comfortable give-and-take between the engaged couple. A enjoyable mystery with some very classic elements.
Solid character development, especially the protagonist, Madi Amos. The "amimals" include the creepy crawly zoo ones along with her special cat Lucky who she hand raised and whose antics figure prominently in her cartoons. Now, a wonderful dog has won over the "cat lady" and joins the family. The mystery weaves the story line, cast of characters, zoo settings, animals and even MI5 into a rich tapestry. The story rolls into the final mystery resolution seamlessly. Unlike many mysteries that have rushed conclusions, I found this one to be well done. I have enjoyed all of the books in this series and recommend them if you need a quick escape with a fun, light-hearted, animal focused mystery.
I gratefully received this book as an ARC. This story takes place at home with Madi and Auryn working in their respective zoos. Auryn is being inducted into an “all boys club” and Madi is there to support him. Their friend Timmy is supposed to be inducted at the same time but never shows up. After the ceremony Madi, Auryn, and friend Jon, go to Timmy’s house only to find him dead. At least it’s not Madi who finds the body this time! I enjoyed the regular cast of characters and was happy to be introduced to some new ones. This story’s pace was even and easy to read and I was able to connect easily with the characters and setting. This is one of the better stories in the series.
I just love Madigan Amos books. With in 5 minutes of starting this story we have us a murder.. Timmy Marsden and Auryn Avery have both been invited to join "The Lords of the Down" (an all male secret club). When Timmy doesn't show up, Madi and Auryn go to his house and discover his body. He's been stabbed and he's very very dead. Ruby Loren has a way of bringing you along on her stories. I didn't figure out the murderer's identity until she wanted me to. Looking forward to Madi's and Lucky's next adventure. I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It's hard to believe there's been 8 books & a short story published in this series in the last 10 months. With every book I read from Ruby Loren she gotten better & better! I've lost track of how many Ruby Loren books I've read. As the series has progressed the books have gotten longer & longer, allowing a deeper & more involved plot and since the primary characters are already familiar if you read the other Madigan Amos Zoo Mysteries it's like a visit with an old friend and this is only one of the author's enjoyable series.
The Madigan Amos mysteries just keep getting better! I thoroughly enjoyed this newest story. There is a new detective in town who is not as abrasive as the last one. Tiff has two new suitors that might both be good guys rather than creeps. There is a new murder, a semi-secret society and lots more to keep your interest. Grab your favorite beverage, some chocolate & your favorite place to read. Lose yourself in this mystery!
I found the premise a little distasteful. I know many people think infidelity is ok but this book had it rampantly throughout. I did like that Auryn and Madi did discuss the topic and showed that not everyone was okay with it. What I like about this series is it is a quick, clean read. What I don't like is that some of the minor characters come off as a little shallow. So read & find out why Timmy was killed and by whom. There are plenty of secrets throughout the book.
This is another great book in the Madigan Amos Zoo Mystery series by Ruby Loren. It's amazing how Madi always gets in the middle of murder mysteries, whether she finds the body or Auryn stumbles over one (literally). Madi and Auryn make a great team and will make a great married couple, provided a murder doesn't derail their plans. I have read a couple books in this series and eagerly anticipate reading another.
This series continues to educate and entertain me. The mystery kept me guessing until the end, again, which is one of the things that impresses me the most. This on has Madi joining a secret society, where the mystery takes place, and is full of fun and excitement. I love the quirky characters that continue to appear as well as the new ones that get introduced. Any animal lover, or cozy mystery lover, should one-click this and get started on this fantastic series today!
I have always liked Ruby Loren and her Madigan Amos Mysteries. ' Chameleons and a Corpse ' is no exception. This time I thought Madi was going to make it through the whole story without getting into to much trouble. But you know what thought did?? Near the end of the story she gets into trouble again. Usually she's in it up to her elbows from the beginning. It was a nice change but glad not to be disappointed. Keep up the good work dear lady. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers Lynn
Straight to the point. Or the corpse. Most of the books by Ruby Loren have a story before someone dies. This time there is a corpse at the beginning of the book. A murderer caught at the end of the book. And the middle is filled with chameleons, quirky new characters, a love triangel, lots of motives for murder, two cute dogs and a few police offers who turn out to be quite human... I received a copy and chose to review it.
Will Madi’s life ever run smoothly? Even when Auryn is nominated for membership in an elite, boring, all male club, whose members are mover and shakers trouble seems to find them. The adventures just keep getting better, come and join the fun. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.
Lizards and Lovers, Oh My! This is the best of the series! But, I say that about each new episode. This one is quite fun as well as a good mystery. The plot is very well done. While I had my thoughts, the ending surprised me. As always, a well planned story, believable characters and lots of humor. I bought this book and voluntarily chose to post my honest review.
All of the Madi books have been fun who-done-it’s, but this is the first to include a dog. I also love learning about different animals, even creepy crawly ones. Madi is a great character who tends to get into pickles quite often. Plus, there’s some unique setting.
It's the first one from the series for me. Not sure why the ratings are so high, as I was rather disappointed. I didn't like the main character who is quite self-centered and not likeable. There are some strange connections to MI5, not that many scenes with animals. And I didn't quite like the crimeplot either.
Madi tries her best to stay away from murder, but somehow she always gets pushed into the investigation! This time the murder hits very close to home leaving a dog behind. Well written with moments that is quite funny!
