Level Up #1

Rate this book
At thirty years old, Phil is an unemployed gamer who’s struggling to make ends meet. His only source of income is freelance writing (whenever he feels inspired enough to add another article to his less-than-popular blog). His wife has just walked out on him, leaving him without money, purpose, or food in the fridge.

On the day his wife dumps him, Phil receives a mysterious piece of wetware. A game interface seems to have been implanted in his brain which allows him to see the world through the eyes of an RPG player.

Now that Phil discovers his real-life stats, he can see they’re far below average. With 4 pt. Agility, 6 pt. Strength and 3 pt. Stamina, his most advanced life skill is playing one of the most epic RPG games of all times.

Luckily, real-life stats can be leveled up just like virtual ones. But will it help Phil get his wife back? Can he stop being such a couch potato? Would the new game help him become fitter? Or more successful? Can his gaming skills finally come in handy in real life?

Last but not least, can he find out who could have uploaded the mysterious game to his brain? And how is he supposed to deal with this unknown but apparently omnipotent force?

Dan Sugralinov grew up in a small working-class town on the Russian border with Kazakhstan. It’s a miracle he survived his childhood games of hide-and-seek in the surrounding building sites complete with perilous rebar structures and flooded foundation pits.

Ever since he learned to read at the age of five, he couldn’t put a book down. Reluctant to earn himself the name of a conceited nerd, he concentrated on playing soccer which allowed him to become friends with the town’s toughest kids.

In 1995, he graduated with honors, entering the St Petersburg Academy of Engineering and Economics where he studied business creation. He must have done something right because in the years that followed, he first worked on TV and radio just to get the taste of it, then opened his first successful business followed by several more. In between, he started writing and playing video games, winning the St Petersburg Mortal Kombat championship and becoming runner-up for Starcraft and Warcraft 3. He is a 14-times champion in Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3 as well as the world’s ex-#1 in the World of Warcraft.

In 2004, he wrote his first motivational novella The Bricks which to date has garnered him over 3,000,000 readers online alone.

In 2014, Russia’s leading publishers of business literature Mann, Ivanov & Ferber published a revised and extended edition of his book, The Bricks 2.0.

In 2015, Dan discovered the existence of LitRPG. He devoured everything that had been written in that genre until he finally decided he too could write similar books.

In summer 2017, he published his first book in the subgenre of realRPG: Level Up.

Dan Sugralinov is a consummate gamer, a multiple MMORPG champion and the world’s ex-#1 in the World of Warcraft. He is also a successful businessman and author of books on marketing and business organization. His first LitRPG series Level Up took Russia by storm in 2017. Its English translation is about to be released on Amazon.

To coś więcej niż „książka o graniu”. Choć życie Fina zmienia się w rozgrywkę niczym w sesji World of Warcraft, czuć w tym głębsze przesłanie.

Dlatego BŁAGAM: potrzebujemy więcej takich książek, a drugi tom? Poproszę na już!

Many LitRPG novels (being wish fulfillment) feature MCs who are losers, gain their cheat skill, then are revealed to have a heart of gold, etc. Instant underdog without the effort of making MC a hero.

That can be fun to read, but it is refreshing to read a book where the MC was sincerely a stupid, oblivious, selfish person who wrecked his own life. It is therefore actually inspiring to watch him start to make amends and chase genuine self-improvement.

fajny koncept, człowiek od razu zastanawia się, jakie sam miałby statystyki XD i jest to dość motywujące. chwilami przeszkadzała mi trochę rosyjska mentalność i "toporność" głównego bohatera. ale całkiem fajna rozrywka.

It's unique and I respect the message that it is trying to send but it dragged in many scenes and when I realized that 76% of the book happened in 2 weeks I honestly scoffed.
Also the MC has 5 potential love interest that each made me roll my eyes He is described as an unremarkable man with a beer gut borderline overweight but you would not expect it with the way the women throw themselves at him
I knew the book was going downhill when he had a sexually frustrated debuff that specifically stated that 'self gratification' would not work to remove it

This book pretty much reads like a mediocre lifestyle change guide disguised as a litRPG. While the underlying idea was at least marginally appealing, the average writing and the non-existent story certainly weren't. While the book boasts about the main character going through actual meaningful change, unlike the characters in many other works of the genre, Phil stays fairly static throughout the entirety of the book. He decides to improve himself in the beginning and that's pretty much all that happens. He quits smoking, he looses some weight. There's some "levelling" going on, and he goes through some job related stuff.
It's all terribly mundane, the weird alien episode aside, which is fine, or would be, if it weren't so awkward and unrealistic, social interactions first and foremost. Maybe it's a Russian thing, but I found the way people behave and react just terribly off.
The characters are okay. Mostly flat, often only popping up two or three times to act as plot devices before disappearing into oblivion. The whole thing is also interlaced with mild sexism and, lets say, traditional values and gender norms. What I maybe found most baffling was that even though our MC is being described as fat and ugly (or at least not traditionally good looking), virtually every woman wants to sleep with him (within hours of meeting him) or finds his borderline sexual harassment flattering.

up to 14% it was hard to get into but after that I was hooked

So trying to stay interested in the beginning was a bit rough as the author likes to be a bit wordy. Later though, it was really quite subtle in how I was drawn into the RPG elements of the story and I was pleasantly surprised with the real world concepts of skill ups. The way that the MC was progressed throughout the book was a nice refreshing change to how one thinks of a hero. I am definitely looking forward to purchasing the next book. Thank you author for an enjoyable read!

Good premise and excellent execution. Adding game elements in to the life rather than adding life element in to the games. This would make a living life easier, for one thing we will get to know what the f*** is going on.

First off let me say I received an advanced copy of this book. I'm leaving a review not because I was asked, but because I want to.
I found the story to be really good for the most part. There was one section where the MC meets with some other-worldly folks that just didn't fit in the story at all. It felt like it was shoehorned in to give us, (the reader) a glimpse of the future. This part wasn't needed at this point and disrupted the story. Other than that I rather liked the MC. I do wish he'd done a bit more to help the police, but I have a hero complex. I really enjoyed this book and read it in one sitting. I will be reading it again when it is released on KU.
I recommend this book to those who enjoy litrpg.

Great book

I originally held off because I'm not into those books where some random guy plays a video game and just gets lucky or has a talent mainly because it seems to take over their life. The mc in those books seem great but they never seen to really do anything else meaningful. This is the first book that hasn't happened and was the best twist to a good concept fully recommended

nieobiektywna opinia..

This was an interesting idea. Imaging being a gamer your whole life and then waking up one day in the real world and finding out you have in interface just like in the games you play. You now can identify people and their characteristics just by looking at them. You can also see your own health stats, intelligence, etc. You get experience points for doing different actions of daily living such as: working out, calling your parents, helping a stranger. That is what happens to the main character Phil. Imagine how much better the world would be if you could quantify everything that you did. That you could know right away if you were gaining favorable or unfavorable status with someone. If you immediately knew that what you said had made you lose status with someone, you could immediately resolve the issue. If you knew how much smoking that cigarette affected your health, maybe you would stop smoking. If you could see you strength or endurance status and knew exactly how much more work you would have to put in to reach the next level, people would probably be a lot more willing to put the work in.

With all that being said though, I don't think the story really went anywhere. I was still confused with Philips goals at the end of the book and I didn't think the relationships he had with women were very well written.

I read this pretty quick, I just wish there was more to the overall plot.

Mini-Review:

3 Stars for Concepts
3.5 Stars for Narration by Ramon de Ocampo
1.5 Stars for Story Progression
2.5 Stars Characters

I'm not sure if the translation is part of the issue or not. I liked the idea of the plot being centered around a middle aged man that is trying to turn his life around by using the new game style abilities to track his development. For most of the story, it was like seeing someone using an appraiser skill on everything. Then there are odd bursts of plot development that tried to add changes to the character & still seem somewhat realistic.

An odd mix of slice of life and what could I do if I could train+learn to be anything? I'm totally down for the concepts. It has potential.

The story is character driven but I didn't care for the MC for most of the book. Majority of decisions and events seem to fall on the "I am suddenly a conscientious good guy" mode.

I'm very happy that my library has LitRPG books for electronic loan. I'm going to check out the next book in the series. I'll give it an hour to snag my interest. I figure it doesn't hurt to try. Hoping for a positive outcome. ;)

A wonderful read!

I picked this up because I saw reviews from two authors I enjoyed, and I am so glad I did. Was expecting a full blow litrpg, and it mostly delivered. What I didn’t expect and truly loved was that this book ended up being a slice of life novel about a man turning himself around.

3 stars but this was a hard one to rate. I liked it but nothing really happened, not really much action. I would read the next book in the series so it has that going for it but it was a long slow burn at times.
This book is unique and does have it's own style.

Great book, it was very hard to put it down.

This book was like a fun self-help book for gamers, one that we would want to read, one that made me finally want to write a review.

This was my first foray into LitRPG, and it went well. This was a great read and look forward to reading the sequel. My one complaint was that the ending felt a little anti-climactic and I felt that we should have learned more about the program and its creators. However other than that its a solid read.

Interesting AR LitRPG

I've always thought that an augmented reality LitRPG set in the real world would make an interesting book. And this book delivers that fairly well.

The translation was very good, as is expected from MagicDome. There were minor spelling mistakes and some odd censorship for swearing that I don't think I've ever seen in any other Russian translated LitRPG.

All in all a solid first book. Looking forward to seeing where this story goes in the future.

Surprisingly good

Highly recommended to any LitRPG fan. It's a must-read. It's also a different take on the "real life turns into RPG" story which I immensely enjoyed.

Can't wait for the sequel!

Przed nim (i przed nami, czytelnikami) długa droga.

„Level Up.

Dlaczego właśnie on? Kim jest twórca gry?

Wejdźcie do świata Phila i razem z nim zdobywajcie kolejne poziomy.

3.5 A Moral Code That Glorifies It Stars

Re-Start is the first book in the Level Up series by Dan Sugralinov.

This book was okay, mainly because of the progression. I keep waffling in wanting to give it another star, simply for my enjoyment alone. But I have to agree with the mysterious old 'Rat' man: I was hoping for more leveling and abilities to pop up before this first book ended.

I, however ironically, agree with the author's take on this more relaxed and realistic approach towards our Mc's path of development. I think this first book was well crafted to allow him to work through everything that had been holding him back. I'm hoping, with that thought in mind, we will see more extravagant changes in the next book.

I'm excited to see how the whole 'from the future'/'alien' crossover aspect of this work will unfold. I'm wondering whether the systems influence over him will instigate him into encouraging more of humankind to advance as a whole so they are pronounced capable by the powers that be. And, ya know, not deemed unworthy or eradicated.

This was a fun book, though maybe mostly because I love the idea of augmented reality so much. The writing wasn't great and there were a few typos, but it was good enough not to annoy me or make me want to quit reading. I did almost quite reading because of disliking the main character so much at the beginning--thankfully, he improves over the course of the book.

As far as content, this book is basically what I wish was meant by an adult book: very blunt and up front about the fact that sex exists, just without any details of a personal nature. Not recommended for very young readers, but anything inappropriate is usually a brief and passing mention.

I highly recommend reading "Re-Start (Level Up Book #1)" by Dan Sugralinov. In book is based on a constructive idea – socialization of the hero by game methods along with his abilities’ progress. That is, playing the game not for the sake of playing, but for far more significant goals and objectives. Reading the book felt very interesting and positive. It raises actual present day questions about modern pastime, so it’s popularity is well deserved. Many readers might identify themselves with the main character; those who, for some reason, failed or just weren’t lucky to realize themselves in our time. And, maybe, the book will give you the necessary impetus to strive for something better.

I really enjoyed the premise of game like stats and leveling based on real world actions and everyday living. The MC was thoughtful and quick to take advantage of the system when given the opportunity. There was no action or excitement which knocked my rating down quite a bit. Interesting but not anything extraordinary.
