Fortune's Brides #1

Never Doubt a Duke

Rate this book
After spending the last ten years following her late husband on campaign, the irrepressible Jane Kimball finds herself badly in need of a position to support herself. Marriage holds no appeal; she’s not likely to find a husband like her Jimmy again. But when Miss Thorn of the Fortune Employment Agency offers her a post with the Duke of Wey, Jane feels drawn to help the lonely widower with his three daughters. He may seem a bit aloof, but Miss Thorn’s cat Fortune approved of him. Why should Jane doubt a duke?

Alaric, Duke of Wey, commands his staff, his tenants, and the halls of Parliament, managing vast holdings in England and across the seas. Why is it he cannot manage his own daughters? As an old danger rears its head, he comes to rely on Jane’s practical nature, her outspoken ways to navigate the waters of fatherhood. And when necessity dictates he take a wife, thoughts turn to an unlikely governess who might make the perfect bride.

This sweet, clean Regency romance is the first in the Fortune’s Brides series.

Previous praise for Regina Scott’s work:
• “Regina Scott’s irresistible characters will win your heart.” Eloisa James, NYT and USA Today bestselling author
• “If the book has the name Regina Scott on its cover, it is sure to please. Highly recommended.” Huntress Reviews

Here’s a taste:

The duke’s smile was wry. “You have no need to apologize, Mrs. Kimball. We disturbed your well-earned rest, invaded your privacy, and called you names. You’d have every right to tender your resignation.”

Jane returned his smile. “Oh, I don’t give up so easily. Besides, where else would I have the opportunity to see a unicorn?”

“There is that.” His smile faded. “I’ll speak to my daughters in the morning. I begin to see why the other governesses left.”

“Cowards,” Jane told him. “I’ve seen too much to be frightened of a voice in the wardrobe.”

“I’m glad, Mrs. Kimball.” Suddenly he made a face, making him much more human. “I wonder, would you mind if I used your first name?”

That fluttering feeling was building again. She ought to refuse, keep her distance. Her mouth opened before she could stop it. “Not at all, Your Grace.”

“Thank you, Jane.”

Why was it she felt as if he’d caressed her cheek? Her first name was only one syllable while her last name was two. He was probably just being efficient.

“And on behalf of my entire family, I apologize.” He swept her a bow as if to prove it. “You have been like a summer breeze through this place, clearing out the cobwebs and chasing away the dark.”

How beautiful. Once again, she clamped her mouth shut against the words building behind it.

“And perhaps we can dispense with the ‘Your Grace’ business,” he suggested.

Jane fidgeted. This was dangerous ground. The maids and footman were just down the corridor. Mr. Parsons the butler had to be waiting. But still she felt as if the world had come down to the duke and her.

“I don’t know your first name,” she pointed out. “And I imagine Mr. Parsons would have apoplexy if I used it. Perhaps Wey? And only in private.”

“I will settle for Wey. I’ll leave you to enjoy the rest of your evening. Thank you, Jane, for not giving up on us.”

She saw him to the door, closed it behind him, and leaned her back against it.

Great start to a series

This was my first book to read by the author, and I greatly enjoyed it. The three daughters were well done, and it is difficult to write convincing children characters. The Duke of Wey was a man of good character. Although his life started out too much about duty, the outspoken Jane helped him to learn about love and priorities. These two were a perfect fit.

Charming start to a fun new regency series!

Jane Kimball is a likable heroine. She had been happily married until loosing her husband in the war. Responding to an ad she sees in the paper she ends up becoming a governess for a reclusive duke, his very proper and demanding mother and his three charming daughters. Alaric is pretty down to earth for a duke, he takes his responsibilities seriously and puts his duties above just about everything else. I loved how Jane sweeps in and shakes everything up. Those are always fun storylines! Alaric loves the changes she sees in his daughters and himself, but knows nothing can happen between them.

I enjoyed the setting for this one, they're secluded on their own island in a very old castle. The story was well paced, characters were unique and well developed. The three girls were fun and I liked their individuality.

The romance was slow building and grew from a good friendship, which I love. I did think that there should have been a prologue with Miss Thorne and her cat Fortune, setting up that side story which I imagine will carry over to the other two books. Overall, it was a fun regency and one I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys the genre.

I loved Jane and her personality! She brought a new dynamic to the family and won them over, though some members took longer then others... There is a strong cast of characters, including the formal and stodgy butler, the dowager duchess, and three daughters with very different personalities. I loved how Jane let them be themselves and encouraged them in their interests. The duke is supportive of her and her efforts with his daughters, and they have a lovely friendship that blossoms slowly over time into something more. Society's standards for the duke bring the conflict that prevents them from feeling like they could be together, but with some harrowing incidents that make the duke realize his true priorities, there is a wonderful happily-ever-after for them. A well-balanced Regency romance that kept me reading and invested in the characters.

Regency. Gave it 3.75 stars. I cheered on this unconventional
couple Alaric+ Jane. And Julian+ his lost love. And the hero's
3 clever daughters (10 and under).

But:
1) Jane was too forthright in her comments.
2) 2 staff members should have been fired sooner.
3) There was a CLIFFHANGER on the 2nd love story!!!
I looked ahead in reviews: in bk 6 Julian gets his HEA??!!!!!

I was so excited when I found out Regina was still going to write after the closing of the Love Inspired historical line, for she is a favorite of mine.
She has written both western and Regency for the line, and though I LOVE a good cowboy Regina can truly write aristocracy. So to hear her next work was a Regency period MATCHMAKING series I was ALL in!

This book did not disappoint, and oh how I loathe having to wait for book two.

I loved Jane's character. Even though she was considered an "unusual governess" in this time period no one could claim she wasn't great with the girls. She loved them and wanted only the best for them. She wanted them to succeed at life, have thoughts and opinions for themselves, be more than dolls on a shelf. They were daughters of a duke, but she wanted them to know they were more than a title.
She came into their lives in a bit of whirlwind of sass and it was GREAT! (Love a sassy female lead!)
Being a cavalry officer's widow she had an independent, strong attitude that was cultivated by following the drum for many years. She was not a push over, nor was she rude. The perfect mix of brain and beauty.
Jane quickly gained the respect and trust of Alaric and his mother with her wit and her charm. And this tested multiple times throughout the story.

Alaric was a strong, distant duke who cared more about duty than most things. Until Mrs. Kimball came into his life. She flipped his world on its head and boy did he need it. He turned from this cold, proper duke to a loving father and gentle aristocrat.
He battled duty over heart through the entire story, but in the end...well they lived happily ever after. 😉

There was a great mystery subplot, with a interesting if not predictable villain. Honestly that was fine with me since it was not the main theme of the story. It did its job and helped accompany and push a thought into a tale.

The duke's daughters were sweet, well two out of three were anyways. The oldest was snobby and pretentious, and thank God for character development. She never really hated Jane she just wasn't her biggest fan.

I hope these characters make another appearance in the series, even if its a small cameo. I'd love to check up on the Duke and Duchess of Wey.

Oh the ending of this book...seriously is book two out yet?! I cannot wait for the rest of this series to be published.

This series reminded me of Jen Turano's series and c'mon now you know I'm all about that life!
I rated this book a 4.5/5 stars. I will follow Regina wherever she goes!

The rich tapestry of this romantic story is looped with dawdling luck, purely from a wise kitty.

My favorite quote from the book was,

Mrs. Jane Kimball is in need of a position. After following the drum for a few years Jane was widowed when her beloved Cavalry officer husband was killed. Missing Jimmy, she stayed with the cavalry working for a commanding officer. She was turned off without a reference but the mysterious Meredith Thorn has offered to help. Miss Thorn and her cat, Fortune, run an employment agency for genteel ladies fallen on hard times. Miss Thorn manages to obtain Jane a position as governess for the Duke of Wey's three motherless girls. It soon becomes obvious that the Duke is bound by duty to work for the betterment of his estate but that leaves little time for his daughters. He leaves their care to his mother. Jane, always known for speaking her mind, fears she will certainly never meet the approval of the Dowager Duchess but Miss Thorn has a solution to that problem too. Jane quickly gets to work showing the little girls all the love and affection she would have bestowed upon her own child if she had been so blessed. In the process she makes enemies of the servants and butts heads with the Duke's eldest daughter. However, the Duke seems to approve of Jane and she of him, perhaps a little too highly to be proper. If Jane loses her heart, she'll lose her position and then where would the little girls be? As for the Duke, he's torn between duty and desire.

I really liked this story more than I expected to. I should have known Regina Scott wouldn't let me down. The only real fault I ever find in her stories is the villain. The villains are always too obvious and this story is no exception, despite the fact she has thankfully learned not to write scenes from the villain's point-of-view. There was a lot of unnecessary drama in this story. My personal preference would have been for a more streamlined story without the complications. It is my understanding that the series will conclude with Miss Thorne's story so this one sets the stage for that to happen later. The only other thing that made me drop the rating is a preference for dogs over cats. There is ONE typo that made me laugh. The Duke needs to fire his cook and housekeeper.

High sticklers will probably quibble about the language and Jane's behavior but I like the characters and the story. Jane is plucky, outspoken, good and kind. She has a bit of a temper when it comes to dealing with bullies. Good for her! I love how she handles everything that comes her way from snooty servants, high stickler Duchesses, a stubborn tween, two precious moppets, a villain and those who would bring her down. Jane learned a lot of valuable lessons from her husband Jimmy and the cavalry. She has a good head on her shoulders and knows how to deal with adversity. She has way more patience with Larissa than I would have. Alaric is a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was raised to know his position and his duty like Mr. Darcy but his personality is far more warm and open than Darcy's. Alaric is proud of his heritage and works hard to help the people on his island. He shows compassion and empathy for their struggles, unlike his father. Alaric loves his daughters but doesn't quite know what to do with them. Alaric just wants to love and be loved for himself and not his title. He wants to be free to be himself. I found myself in sympathy with him, wanting him to find a happy balance between duty and desire. I wish he could have had a happier childhood but the best he can do it allow his daughters the freedom to make their own choices and love them no matter what.

The Dowager Duchess is a high stickler for duty but she isn't evil. She recognizes her granddaughters miss their mother and need love. Her love threatens to overwhelm them at times as she doesn't know how to raise a girl. Larissa, the eldest, took every word her mother said to heart. Poor Evangeline must have been very unhappy being raised only to be a Duchess. She had no right to impose that on her daughters. Poor Larissa is living for her come-out at only 10 years of age! 10 is a tough age to begin with and she's beginning to challenge authority and manipulate the adults around her until she gets her own way. She's stuck in the rut of how her mother used to do things and can't accept change gracefully. As a future Duchess or Princess, this is something she should learn. Jane is right to introduce other subjects into the school room and help the girls become the best women they can be. The little girls just want to be loved. I can hear Julie Andrews as Maria Von Trapp in my head "Oh love them captain! Love them all!" Calantha is my favorite of the three. She's charming with her tattletale ways. Abelona's unicorn obsession is sweet and I like the way Jane is so sympathetic and knows just what to do. I normally HATE children in novels (and often in real life) but the younger two were just charming enough to be amusing and none of them orchestrate any lame Parent Trap plots.

The servants leave a lot to be desired. Mr. Parsons, the butler, acts more like a Duke than Alaric. He's completely awful. The nursery staff are useless and gossip around the children, which is typically a no-no even today. Kids that age absorb and repeat everything! Simmons is the worst of the lot. He's so sullen and should have been sacked. Only Mr. Quayle in the stables is kind and understanding.

Alaric's friends are hit or miss. I really don't care for Mr. Mayes. Mr. Mayes is a jerk. He is determined to believe the worst of everyone and for a lawyer, he is awfully quick to act as judge and jury to condemn people. He doesn't even question that there might be two sides to the story. I believe he lacks instincts and people skills. He seems to be a good friend to Alaric but I don't know why a Duke's heir and a lawyer would be allowed to be friends growing up. Some of Alaric's other friends intrigue me, particularly Harry, the hero of the next story. I can't wait to read about him. Jane's friend Patience is aptly named. She has a lot of patience with her hypochondriac employer. I don't know how she can keep her mouth shut and put up with all that she does. We'll see what happens next!

I am in a state of twitter-pated stupefaction so don't expect coherency from me at this point...or any time in the future. Because....

Eeeeeppppp....literally everything I LOVE in a Regency to the nth degree!

And, can I say for the record, I never doubted this duke once during the course of my read! :-) There's a little bit of a Sound of Music vibe going on here as the very practical and decidedly ungoverness-y governess arrives at the Duke of Wey's estate. She manages to rock the austere household to its very foundation, from upstairs to downstairs and everything in between. All in a very good way, of course. Sometimes funny, sometimes touching and often swoonalicous (enter Duke stage left.) I'm still in the glory haze of reader delirium.

Love Jane -- she's. a unique heroine with an equally unique background. The widow of an army officer, she has lived an exotic life where she's had to eke out her own codes and standards which are very different from what the Duke's domineering mother expects from her granddaughters. Ha, let the clashing of wills begin as Jane sets out to show this upper crust matron (and the duke, insert silly fan-girling grin) that there's much more to a young lady's life than deportment and conniving for the perfect match...especially when the young ladies in question are all under the age of twelve!

Our duty bound Duke wallows in his responsibilities, so much so that he's turned over the raising of his daughters to his mother. Until Jane turns up and helps him connect with the little girls who clearly adore him. And in the process, the impossible happens. Attraction between a Duke and a governess? Not unheard of, but marriage between the two? Impossible!

Love the way this story flows, the expectional secondary characters who add depth and dimension and even a hint of sinister into the mix. And the romance...be still my heart. Perfectly paced in the most breathtaking way!

And I love the mysterious Miss Thorn of the Fortune Employment Agency. We get hints of her backstory and why she has come to be a champion of suddenly impoverished women. Plus there's her cat, Fortune, who is as royally smug as only a cat can be. Really looking forward to continuing the series...I can't believe I have gone without for four years!!!! I mean to catch up now though.

I listened to the audible edition expertly narrated by Janine Meisberger. I enjoyed the story all the more for her winning performance.

What an absolutely delightful tale! These characters were so likable and believable. Never Doubt a Duke had a great combination of romantic chemistry between the main characters, strife from those who did not believe Jane to be a suitable governess, some danger, and just the right bit of light humor.

I so enjoyed Jane Kimball. I could feel how strongly she cared for the well being of the three girls she became governess to. I also thoroughly liked Alaric, the Duke of Wey. He had been told by his first wife that it wasn’t his duty to bring up the girls or to be close to them, and to leave their care to the women and staff. I enjoyed watching, in this story, as his father’s heart began to feel for these children who so desired love from him.

I’m really looking forward to reading future books in this series.

Jane Kimball has spent the last ten years following her late husband's regiment in England. Now, a widow, she finds herself in need of employment to support herself. She answers an ad by a Miss Thorn, of the Fortune Employment Agency, and finds herself a governess to the 3 young daughters of Alaric, Duke of Wey. Alaric is a widow and has never concerned himself with the raising of his daughters in the least. After all, his mother lives with him to take care of it. However, his daughters are sadly lacking in schooling. Jane insists on a meeting with him each evening to discuss his daughters' progress in the school room.

Alaric has never met a governess like Jane. Jane, irrepressible Jane, who is full of wit and seems not the least bit concerned about how the stuffy butler feels about her. Jane is determined to be herself.
But there is some mischief afoot here and Alaric and Jane are going to have to discover the culprit.

I have enjoyed Regina Scott's books for years and she does do a good Regency novel! This one is very clean and sweet and quite good indeed. I loved Jane's character so much! She made me laugh and she brought some much fun to this stuff household. Recommended.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the Wallin family story from the Frontier Bachelors series, I first discovered Regina Scott’s writing through the Regency, my favorite time period. I am thrilled that her latest novel returns to that era and begins a new series with this delightful story about duty, family, and love.

The historical detail is outstanding. With as many books set during this time as I have read, I am still learning new things, even searching Google to be sure I was understanding a phrase correctly--I really enjoy it when historical fiction makes me want to do some research to learn more. And while women have a strictly defined “place” in Regency society, I love that the heroine refuses to allow the three girls in her care to limit themselves completely to that which society says they should aspire.

This is a book that kept me perpetually smiling, whether at the antics of the girls, the comments that escaped Jane’s lips, or even the swoon-worthy ending; from start to finish I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. With just a touch of mystery, wonderful characters, and a fantastic love story, I highly recommend Scott’s latest for fans of the Regency and those who enjoy a good romance. The next book cannot come soon enough to suit me!

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author but was under no obligation to post a positive review. The opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

BACK OF THE BOOK BLURB

(copied from Fantastic Fiction)

After spending the last ten years following her late husband on campaign, the irrepressible Jane Kimball finds herself badly in need of a position to support herself. Marriage holds no appeal; she's not likely to find a husband like her Jimmy again. But when Miss Thorn of the Fortune Employment Agency offers her a post with the Duke of Wey, Jane feels drawn to help the lonely widower with his three daughters. He may seem a bit aloof, but Miss Thorn'scat Fortune approved of him. Why should Jane doubt a duke?

Alaric, Duke of Wey, commands his staff, his tenants, and the halls of Parliament, managing vast holdings in England and across the seas. Why isit he cannot manage his own daughters? AS an old danger rears its head, he comes to rely on Jane's practical nature, her outspoken ways to navigate the waters of fatherhood. And when necessity dictates he take a wife, thoughts turn to an unlikely governess who might make the perfect bride.

MY REVIEW

I read a lot of historical books but steer away from the 'regency' area but I really like Regina Scott books and said I'd give it a try. Needless to say she has pulled me in and I'm anxiously waiting for the next book in the series! There is determination, a little mystery, inner fear and of course you can't leave out the love. I would recommend this book even if you don't do the 'regency' storylines, I'm hooked!

I was given this e-book in return for an honest review.

The premise is interesting and, other than implausibility there are no egregious faults with this one except that unfortunately, I was very, very bored.

She had never been the type to give up. She was more likely to ride the extra mile, take the high hill. She had fought against Jimmy’s stepmother to marry him, fought for her place at his side in the field. She had never let anything stop her from achieving her dream. But when it came to her growing feelings for Wey, she knew an impossible dream when she saw one.

Just because it’s clean doesn’t mean it can’t be a little more exciting or less preposterous. I’m willing to suspend belief to some degree if I’m being entertained. I was not entertained.

This was a cute historical romance. It was pretty straight forward. A duke falls in love with his governess. I prefer my HR to have some humor or sassy characters. This one didn’t have that. It just was.. if that makes sense.

Don’t get me wrong. It was still a good story. It was just a little on the boring side.

Regina Scott is a master at creating witty characters and entertaining plots! The main characters, the Duke of Wey and Jane Kimball, are delightful, kind, and relatable. Their developing friendship and their shared devotion to his three children, make up most of the story, but they also have some good chemistry as well :) I was pleased with the way they found their happily ever after.

I usually listen to romance books with some level of heat. For me this was more like a historical fiction book and only about the last 25% of the story the romance develops. Nice clean romance with the introduction of the next book in the series that left me intrigued.
This story is about a widow that comes to work as a nanny for a family and how she slowly develops a relationship with the daughters, the grandma and then the father. A good well developed story with very good narration that nailed the accent.

Never Doubt a Duke by Regina Scott is a charming, witty Regency romance with a more worldly couple at its heart. Both the Duke of Wey and his new governess have lived long enough, and hard enough, to have very definite opinions about their place in the world, and their role in the lives of the others in the household. What neither of them expects is just how completely they will come to question everything they thought they knew; about themselves and each other.

Widow Jane Kimball is no schoolroom chit, and Alaric, the Duke of Wey, is a widower with three daughters. Jane's full-throttle approach to life and Alaric's measured, slightly-weary perspective could have clashed dreadfully, but instead they complement each other very well.

The ease of their connection is almost immediate, but their romance is more of a slow burn. Many Regencies concentrate on the all-consuming passion of first love, and it was very gratifying to listen to a romance between two people whose maturity and circumspection made their eventual love for each other feel very real.

The Duke's daughters, Larissa, Calantha, and Abelona are equally appealing in their different ways, and the Duke's mother is also a delight - as waspish and formidable a Dowager as one could ask for in a Regency.

The language throughout the book is somewhat informal for the period. It does not adhere to the formality of Georgian grammar, but it is true to the spirit of it, and this looseness makes it much easier on the ear.

Overall the story was well written and I was content to spend hours at a time with Jane, Alaric, and their girls. There was just enough intrigue to keep it moving along, and it set up the next book in the series well without feeling unfinished.

The narrator, Jannie Meisberger, had a lovely tone to her voice. Her performance was lively with good voices for the characters, even the children, who can be difficult to portray without falling into cutesy parody. The girls' voices are distinct, and at no point did they become muddled in my mind, which is quite an achievement when dealing with three young women aged between five and ten.

I would recommend this audiobook to anyone who enjoys the 'bluestocking' trope in Regency romance, and those who would like to read about a slightly more experienced couple. Listeners who enjoyed Jodi Taylor's A Bachelor Establishment, in particular, would like this one too.
