The Rodale Book of Composting, Newly Revised and Updated: Simple Methods to Improve Your Soil, Recycle Waste, Grow Healthier Plants, and Create an Earth-Friendly Garden
An essential guide to composting for all gardeners and environmentally conscious peopleThis revised edition of The Rodale Book of Composting includes all the latest in new techniques, technology, and equipment. Gardeners know composting is the best way to feed the soil and turn food scraps into fresh produce, but even urbanites can get on board thanks to programs like compost pickup and citywide food waste initiatives—there’s no better way to reduce landfill waste (and subsequent emissions) and dependence on fossil fuels while nourishing the earth. The Rodale Book of Composting offers easy-to-follow instructions for making and using compost; helpful tips for apartment dwellers, suburbanites, farmers, and community leaders; and ecologically sound solutions to growing waste-disposal problems.
A great update to a great book. This is the compost bible! I would still like to see a bit more information included about composting chicken waste--there is very little available out there for the backyard chicken keeper.
I looooove reading about compost. The 2nd edition of this book was the "text" for the compost class that i took at the local Junior College in 2011ish, but I didn't read through the whole book then. The book was a quick read this month on my e-reader. I found some points that contradicted things that our instructor said (for instance, he recommended against using adding soil to a pile, but it can help to soak up the wet smelly stuff), but was also reminded of ideas that I'd forgotten (agricultural lime! it will help stop loss of nitrogen due to ammonification). I loved the long treatment of trends in making compost on a large scale, i.e. municipal waste compost.
Picked up from library to learn on how to compost. It reads more like a compost propaganda, which seems a bit odd for people who are already willing to start learning to compost journey. I m not sure if I m jaded bc of my plan science background, but I was disappointed by the little amount of actual science and actual info on how to build and maintain compost (chapters 8 to 10 would suffice - and even these are quite repetitive). I would appreciate more info on how to recognize/measure C:N ratios and how to monitor heath of your compost. If this is THE compost bible - I think we can substantially improve on this information as a community.
Really great resources for different approaches to composting along with their pros and cons. This thing is dense in information. From a history of composting to current regulations and Organic concerns to different process's and philosophies to composting.
A very thorough overview of composting theory, methods, materials and equipment. A valuable resource for anyone considering starting or expanding composting operations (home or larger scale)
the bible for composting, great info for newbies and advanced composters, wasn't a big fan of the chapters on municipalities composting methods, breezed through that.
