Α=-Α

Το Α=-Α είναι ένα graphic novel με θέμα την Αμφιβολία. Πρόκειται για την εικαστική αφήγηση της ιστορίας του Άλφα, ο οποίος κάνει μια εναγώνια προσπάθεια να καταλάβει ποιος είναι ο ίδιος και τι είναι αυτός ο παράξενος κόσμος μέσα στον οποίον υπάρχει. Είναι ένας άνθρωπος που ονειρεύεται; Είναι μια ζωγραφιά ενός εικονιστορήματος; Ένας παράφρων σε παραλήρημα; Ή τελικά ένα φάντασμα που επέστρεψε στον κόσμο των ζωντανών; Μέσα από μια παράξενη περιπλάνηση από την παιδική ηλικία μέχρι τα γεράματα, σε μέρη εκτός τόπου και εποχές εκτός χρόνου, ο Άλφα θα προσπαθήσει να κατανοήσει, μόνο και μόνο για να βρεθεί ενώπιος με ένα μυστήριο που τον ξεπερνά.

Η ιδιαιτερότητα του Α=-Α είναι ότι δεν έχει ένα συγκεκριμένο ζωγραφικό στυλ, αλλά το ζωγραφικό ύφος αλλάζει ακολουθώντας τη συνειδησιακή και ψυχική κατάσταση του κεντρικού χαρακτήρα και τη ροή της αφήγησης. Αφήγηση, η οποία με τη σειρά της ακολουθεί τη ζωγραφική διάθεση και ορίζεται από αυτήν, σαν σε τραμπάλα που το βάρος μετατοπίζεται πότε στη μια και πότε στην άλλη πλευρά. Κάθε καρέ του εικονιστορήματος Α=-Α είναι ένα μικρό, χειροποίητο έργο τέχνης, φιλοτεχνημένο είτε με μολύβια, είτε μελάνια, είτε με ελαιοχρώματα.

Έτσι το Α=-Α, αυτή η γνωσιολογική ιστορία μυστηρίου, αποτελεί ένα αφηγηματικό ταξίδι στα ψυχικά τοπία του ήρωά του και συνάμα ένα εικαστικό ταξίδι στα διαφορετικά στυλ της ζωγραφικής του.

About the author

Dimitris Anastasiou was born in Athens, Greece, in 1979. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (A.S.F.A.), under Professor Chronis Botsoglou. He has presented his paintings in three solo shows at Kaplanon Galleries in Athens and has participated in over fifty group exhibitions in Greece and abroad (Russia, Cyprus) and in many international art fairs in Athens, Thessaloniki, Barcelona, Madrid, Zurich and Berlin. He lives and works in Athens. A=-A is his first graphic novel. A=-A is published in English by Jonathan Cape / Vintage / Penguin Random House and in Greek by Kaleidoscope Publications.

Ο Δημήτρης Αναστασίου γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1979. Σπούδασε στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας όπου αποφοίτησε με άριστα το 2006 από το Β' εργαστήριο του Χρόνη Μπότσογλου. Έχει πραγματοποιήσει τρεις ατομικές εκθέσεις στις αίθουσες τέχνης των kaplanon galleries, το 2009, το 2012 και το 2018. Έχει πάρει μέρος σε περισσότερες από πενήντα ομαδικές εκθέσεις στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό, καθώς και σε φουάρ τόσο της Ελλάδας (Art Athina 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015) όσο και του εξωτερικού ( SWAB Barcelona 2015, Art Madrid 2016, Contemporary Art Fair Zurich 2016) πάντοτε με τις kaplanon galleries. Είναι ο δημιουργός του graphic novel Α=-Α, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε το 2018 από τις εκδόσεις ΚΑΛΕΙΔΟΣΚΟΠΙΟ και το 2021 από τις εκδόσεις Jonathan Cape των Vintage Books που ανήκουν στον όμιλο Penguin Random House.

Το Α=-Α του Δημήτρης Αναστασίου δεν είναι ένα απλό graphic novel. Είναι μαρτύριο και σωτηρία μαζί. Ανάγνωσμα για δύσκολες ώρες. Μπράβο στις εκδόσεις Καλειδοσκόπιο για την εξαιρετική ποιότητα της έκδοσης

A clever intriguing work of art right down to the minutest detail. A thoroughly entertaining adventure featuring so many well 'drawn' characters set in tantalising environments. The complete book beautifully presented. Bring on an English version please.

A dreamy graphic novel. That is to say, it evokes the hazy yet high-faluting feel of a dream very well.

A=-A is a book of beautiful artwork tied together by a story that relies on symbolism. Our protagonist Alpha wakes on the pavement and then sets out on a journey of spontaneous flight, Kafka-esqe pressures, living art, trippy psychotherapy, sexual folktales and sudden age.

There is in fact a momentum to this plot of loose themes, established by very precise chapters that indicate a drastic change in the dreamscape. Also the philosophising and sharp introspection was just interesting enough for me to look past the overall pretentiousness.

A=-A is an experimental book written by an artist who presumably wants to express his thoughts through the graphic novel form. Anastasiou does just that with some gorgeous illustration that effortlessly shifts from photo realism to surrealism and back again. I found the shaded backgrounds of 'Once Upon a Time' particularly breathtaking.

This book requires some patience for most but I can easily recommend A=-A to artists and art lovers alike.

Firstly, I just have to say that this is one of the most beautifully illustrated graphic novels I have had the pleasure of reading.  I would genuinely consider hanging a lot of these pages on the wall, just incredible!  I have included photographs of some of my favourite pages so you don't just have to take my word for it.

The story is also beautiful, questioning our reality and who we are.  Alpha awakes in a world that isn't "normal", he knows something isn't quite right but he can't remember anything to be able to pinpoint what is wrong.  We follow him on a journey through an upside down, inside out, world where he questions his very existence.

In truth, I used to ask myself "am I real" a lot when I was younger.  I used to question my existence, was I dreaming, am I a physical being, are the people I love real?  Pretty deep and terrifying for a child right  This book has made my thoughts feel valid, at the age of 36 I have realised I am not a weirdo...well maybe a little bit of a weirdo but I like to think in the best kind of way.

Such a magical and challenging graphical novel, one that questions our existence to the very core.

Reading this book is like falling down the rabbit hole into a bizarre and surreal world, full of questions. The illustration is stunning, with realistic portraits and a gorgeous black and white theme. I enjoyed how the book questions whether our views and convictions are truly of our own making, or if they can be boiled down to filtered sensory data, subjectively experienced. As someone who hasn’t studied philosophy, I think I missed some of the references, as I wasn’t entirely sure what was happening throughout. However, that didn’t detract from my enjoyment, as I was incredibly intrigued. The title is a clever reference that is picked up in the book and I loved considering whether someone can truly be both alive and dead in a dream. Overall, a thought-provoking and stunning read. ένα εξαιρετικά πρωτότυπο και ιδιότυπο εικονιστόρημα, όπως ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας το χαρακτηρίζει, που περιλαμβάνει πλήθος συμβολισμών και αλληγοριών. Ο Α αναζητά το κουβάρι της ύπαρξης, ποιος είναι, τι υπάρχει, από πού ξεκίνησε και τι προσδοκά. Μέσα από μια ονειρική περιπλάνηση που τον ταξιδεύει στις εσχατιές του νου, θέτει ερωτήματα και αναζητά απαντήσεις. Το ζωγραφικό στυλ του συγγραφέα- καλλιτέχνη είναι πολύ ξεχωριστό, τα σκίτσα του είναι ολοζώντανα, θα μπορούσε κανείς να αναγνωρίσει άνετα τις ανθρώπινες φιγούρες στον δρόμο, αν τις συναντούσε.
Δεν θα έλεγα ότι ανήκει στα αγαπημένα μου είδη ανάγνωσης, όμως το βρήκα εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρον και μια καλή ευκαιρία να θέσει κανείς στον εαυτό του τις ερωτήσεις που θέτει και ο πρωταγωνιστής και να προσπαθήσει να βρει τις δικές του απαντήσεις.
Πόση, στ' αλήθεια, πραγματικότητα χωράει στο όνειρο και πόσο όνειρο στην πραγματικότητα;

This was very surreal, but I enjoyed it. A man called Alpha wakes up but does not know where he is or why he is there, he seems to be in a dream and goes on a strange journey. I am not 100% sure what happened in this but is is very philosophical and looks at questions of reality and what can we believe is real or really happening and what can happen if we open ourselves to doubt. There is some Descartes in here and other philosophical questions. It is also humours in parts.

I enjoyed the art style also and especially liked the part where Alpha is in the room of paintings.

I would especially recommend this for fans of philosophy.
