‘Meditation is training the mind to develop awareness.’
Author Tony Smith presents a new book on MEDITATION FOR BEGINNERS and while there are many self-help books on the subject, Tony approaches the concept I the light of our immediate position in history: meditation may be an ancient art but Tony brings its importance and impact into our time – successfully. Of note, his other publication is MINDFULNESS FOR BEGINNERS and in this book he discusses their interplay.
An example: as part of his well written introduction he states, ‘One interesting thing that has happened in recent years is that scientists – particularly those in the field of neuroscience – have started to study meditation using modern tools such as CAT scans, MRI scans, and PET scans. They have made some interesting and sometimes startling observations about what happens to the brain when a person meditates. Their discoveries help to put the profound experiences that people have while meditating into a modern, scientific context – something that is important if we want to understand why meditation is so beneficial.’
Tony leads us into the art of meditation by first defining Meditation – religious (in Hinduism, in Buddhism, in Judaism, in Islam, in Christianity) and secular. He discusses the health benefits of meditation (effects on the body - emotions, stress, blood pressure, immune response, reduced inflammation, sleep, adrenal gland activity, energy, and effects on mental and emotional aspects – mental clarity, creativity, serenity, optimism, concentration), the science of meditation, and misconceptions about mediation.
Once he has offered these aspects of defining meditation he covers the act of meditation – how to prepare emotionally and physically. To supplement his teaching he explains Mindfulness and its association with meditation, the use of mantras in meditation, a fine discussion on Visualization and how to deepen meditation with this aspect.
Keeping his book as a Beginners Guide, Tony addresses other forms of meditation – prayer, walking meditation, color, guided and compassion meditation, and completes his teaching and coaching with a realistic section on how to turn mediation into a habit! He closes with supportive reassurance: ‘Give yourself permission to try, and to make mistakes. Don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself. Your goal is not to achieve a transcendental state, or to find nirvana. Your goal is to increase your own happiness, and improve your physical, mental and emotional health. Meditation can do that for you. It can help you feel better than you ever have before, provided that you’re willing to make time in your schedule. If you let it, meditation can change your life. All you need to do is remain open to the experience and be prepared to accept what comes to you. If you can do that, you can attain greater peace and happiness than you ever believed possible.’ And with that he closes his guide – one of the better mediation guides available.
Tony Smith’s, “Meditation for Beginners: How to Find Inner Peace and True Happiness (Meditation Books, Meditation Techniques),” is a great guide for people who do not know where to start with their meditation journey. I have wanted to get into meditation since I started nursing school to try and alleviate some of the newfound stress and anxiety I had acquired. This guide breaks down different aspects of meditation, from what you are truly searching for, to how to actually meditate, all the way to what can occur post meditation. I think this provides a well-rounded experience of meditation and offers an easy way to get started without being too long or overdrawn that it would lose your attention. I think the easy breakdown of meditation and the different sections make this a valuable reference tool even for those who are familiar with meditation because there is never not enough information to have access to.
Meditation for Beginners: How to Find Inner Peace and True Happiness (Meditation Books, Meditation Techniques) by Tony Smith is exactly what I was looking for. I’ve been curious about Meditation for awhile and have been looking for information on it, why it’s useful and how to go about doing it, and if it’s really the thing for me. This book answered all of those questions and then some. Smith goes in depth explaining how Meditation works, the historical and religious aspects of it, and explained the many different ways it can be used and what to do if you’re looking for certain results. In short, it’s ideal for a beginner. The book is only 110 pages so it’s a quick read but I feel like it has set me off on my meditation adventure on the right foot. I now know what I’m looking for in Meditation and what to look for in future research.
Meditation for Beginners: How to Find Inner Peace and True Happiness by Tony Smith is a great resource that introduces those new to meditation its benefits. This is not just a guide that shows one how to meditate. It also discusses the history of meditation, how it began in the religious world, and how it has evolved into a more secular practice. Smith lays out in a clear and concise manner the benefits of meditation, how to practice meditation, and even breaks down the common misconceptions about meditation. This is a short, useful book that is quite helpful in describing everything there is to meditating, and how it can positively impact your life. If you want to improve your life, increase energy, add creativity and balance to your existence, look no further than this all encompassing book. Highly recommend for a quick and thoughtful read.
The author of this book has put together a good history of meditation and where it comes from and some of the benefits. There is a good path to learning meditation as an individual and reaping the benefits of this method. The method will help you train your mind, focus, and concentration. I found the book to be an easy and informative read with a lot of useful information. Medication is a very useful tool to maintaining a stress free and focused lifestyle. I enjoyed the read and have begun using these methods to help in my own life. I would recommend this one to all those who have stress and conflict or just have a hard time staying focused and on task.
Geared toward both those who are new to meditation as well as those who are just interested in learning a little more about it, Meditation for Beginners is a good introduction to meditation. It covers the history of meditation as well as various types of meditation and commonly misconceptions. I enjoyed the general background, because I think it helps when people understand what meditation is and its purpose. I liked that the author emphasizes that the point of meditation is not to achieve nirvana, nor is it important to “clear your mind” of all though. Rather, the book shows how to channel your thoughts to relax and improve your general well-being. It makes no broad statements about curing all that ails you, but rather on how medication can help those who choose to utilize it.
This is the perfect book if you are interested in meditation. I love the historical aspects of meditation discussed,as well as the benefits, and the religious ties it has. It has advice and concepts to consider for a good meditation session, as well as how to get started and how to do it! The book is a quick read, but in my opinion it is perfect to read through and then try it yourself, or read sections and then try it on your own. This book is a good tool as well as a good reference to return to to remind yourself why and how meditation happens. A good book for beginners or anyone interested in meditation.
Meditation for Beginners is a short, easy read that definitely will give you a foundation to start practicing meditation. I have been meditating fairly regularly for a few years now, so this was nothing new to me. However, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who was interested in starting the practice of meditation.
Tony Smith does a great job at giving readers a nice background of the concepts of meditation. It also explains how to meditate in different manners and ways. It also gives a good history of meditation, and tips on how to make it a real habit in your life. If you have ever thought that meditation might be right for you, I would certainly recommend this book.
This book helps to teach the fundamentals of not only why you should meditate but also pointers for meditation. As a society we are way too addicted to finding outside happiness. (As the author points out, our 24/7 cell phone usage is a big part of that.) We are so scared to sit alone with our thoughts but doing so can help us find happiness.
