Dream Warrior

Rate this book
We are the Dolophoni. Diligent. Vigilant. Fierce and inescapable. Servants of the Furies, we are the right hand of justice and no one stands before us.

The son of Warcraft and Hate, Cratus spent eternity battling for the ancient gods who birthed him. He was death to any who crossed him. Until the day he laid down his arms and was banished into exile.

Now an ancient enemy has been unleashed and our dreams are his chosen battlefield. The only hope we have is the one god who swears he will never fight again.

As a Dream-Hunter, Delphine has spent eternity protecting mankind from the predators who prey on our unconscious state. But now that her allies have been turned, she knows in order to survive, the Dream-Hunters need a new leader. Someone who can train them to fight their new enemies. Cratus is her only hope. But she is a bitter reminder of why he chose to lay down his arms.

Time is running out and if she can’t win him to her cause, mankind will be slaughtered and the world we know will soon cease to exist.

Cratus or Jericho (God of War) and Delphine Iole (demigod Oneroi)

Cratus is the guy who helped to imprison Prometheus. He has spent the majority of his life in Olympus as the lapdog of Zeus without thinking much. Until one day, he refused to murder an infant and his punishment was out of this world. Zeus took his godhood and Cratus was thrown to Earth where he had to live like a mortal. He could not accumulate money and wealth and he could not sleep in peace because every night his mortal heart was ripped out from his chest and the next morning a new heart was back in its place.

Obviously Cratus hates Gods, obviously he wants revenge. So when Gods need his help, obviously he chooses to join the enemy, Noir and Azura (two out of the six first Gods who are pure concentrated evil). Now Crratus is called Jericho and he is out for blood.

Delphine is sent by Zeus to try and convince Cratus to help them. During her attempts to approach him, she is captured by Noir and Azura and she is given to Cratus as a slave. She discovers that Scoti (the Oneroi slaves of emotions) help Noir and Azura, but only because the two evil Gods have been drugging Scoti during their dream state.

Delphine and Cratus will fall in love and then Cratus will realize that not slaughtering this infant thousands of years ago, was one of the wisest decisions of his life.

The mythology in this book is awesome. Old Greek myths and the author’s imagination are tangled together and produce an amazing complex world. It is one of the few times, we actually see Zeus in action and the whole Greek Gods and Goddesses pantheon takes sides and shows its cruelness and arrogance. Well done!

I was pleasantly surprised by this awesome book. During the first 30% of the story, I thought it was an ok read for me, nothing particularly exciting and it didn’t fully capture me from the very start like other books by Kenyon did. But by the end, Dream Warrior totally went beyond my expectations! It was incredibly wonderful!

My eyes filled with tears as I read the beautiful and touching scene in the epilogue. I couldn’t be happier.

A very enjoyable read indeed!

Based on the "love story" alone in this book, I was ready to polish up my 1-star rating for this one. But, luckily, a lot of other things happen that save it, and for that, I put my 1-star award away for another day.

I mean, I've seen a lot of insta-love in books, but this one... sheesh!

If just saying a kind word to a gorgeous hunk of god-man is enough to make him fall instantly in love forever, I've got a lot of kind things to say to Chris Hemsworth!

well, hello gorgeous god-man...

Crap, spent too much time looking at Hemsworth gifs. What was I talking about again? Oh, yeah, the crappy book. Okay, so it was crappy. The main guy, Jericho, had an eye-patch. I'm sorry, but I don't get the whole sexy eye patch thing. I mean, all I can think about is, "what is under that thing? Is it gross? Oh gosh, please don't let it come off and freak me out! Run away, run away!"

Did you get a BB gun for Christmas?

The only saving part of this book was the fact that we got glimpses of the other Dark Hunters. Zarek, in particular, was sexily adorable. But, I have always had a weak spot for him. I love how him and his wife argue over the name of their son.

"It's all right, Bob. Daddy's got you now. I'm saving you from Mommy's bad naming taste. I'd be crying too, if my mom named me after an idiot."

"Menoeceus is a great name," Astrid said defensively.

Zarek snorted. "For an old man or a feminine hygiene product. Not for my son. And next time I get to name the kid and it won't be something that sounds like meningitis."

There is enough Zarek sarcasm banter in this book for me to have given it an extra star, but be warned, not enough to tell anyone to read this book in the first place. I just found the tiny sliver of a ray of sunshine in an otherwise crap-fest.

So, should I explain why it's a crap-fest? I guess it's only fair.

First, the insta-love is ridiculous.

Second, the bad guys are completely new and not particularly interesting. Just simply, "me evil, me torture, me kill, end the world." Yeah, yeah, yeah... what else is new? Give us something we can use! And, what are the usual bad guys doing? Taking a break?

Third, there is a lot that happens, but it is almost too frantic. He's on earth, he's in some new realm that we've never heard of, he's in New Orleans eating, back to the new realm, over to earth again, now to Olympus, back, Stryker's realm, Hades realm, etc.. back and forth over an over again until I didn't know or care where the hell they were anymore.

And lastly, there was such predictability that I could have written the damn plot. He is thrown out of Olympus for sparing a baby's life, and that same baby grows up to be his one true love (within hours of meeting her). That's not a spoiler. You guess it immediately, then it is revealed early. It's truly the plot of bad Disney-ish children's stories.

Sherrilyn Kenyon has, over the years and books, created the most original and ingenious series.

Choosing to walk into self-exile, after giving up fighting for the ancient Greek gods, Cratus/Jericho will be required to take up arms again if mankind and their world is to survive. But persuasion skills will have to be used if he’s to agree!
 photo jericho-145x145_zpskrem170f.jpg
Delphine, Dream-Hunter and mankind’s protector against the predators who invade their dreams is very dedicated and committed to her role.
 photo delphine-145x145_zpsky3ppquk.jpg
When mankind is threatened with destruction, she will have to persuade Jericho to help her in overcoming the evil enemy.

I really liked Jericho and Delphine as a couple and their relationship and the banter between each other had some really great lines…….
“Why would you do that? (Delphine)
Why do you think? (Jericho)
Because I’m a bossy hag and you’d rather be enslaved to a man you hate than deal with me. (Delphine)
You know…you’re not funny. (Jericho)
I think I’m hysterical. (Delphine)”
They were endearing and sweet and you wanted them to get their HEA.

There is so much happening in the story plot with so many characters that at times I had to remind myself whose story was this book about! I would have liked seeing more of them together.

The character development in the series just keeps getting better and better.

Oh, cliffhanger at the end…..just to wet your appetite…and wanting to get the next book!!

Story
6000 years earlier, Cratus, a sentinel of Zeus, had defied Zeus’ order and had spared a life he should have taken. He had been punished severely, his godhood taken, and forced to live on Earth as a mortal, deprived from even the tiniest morsel of happiness or satisfaction. Plus, he has been tortured and killed every night, and resurrected by the morning ever since.

The story sets in the present: the Greek pantheon is threatened by two Source gods, Noir and Azura. As Cratus (now Jericho) is a Source god himself, the Greeks send two Oneroi gods, Phobos and Delphine, to convince him to fight on their behalf, and in return he’d get back his godhood and powers.

The first 30 percent is very repetitive and boring. The rest seems chaotic and soap-opera-like. New and old characters are thrown randomly into the plot: Greek Gods, Source Gods, Oneroi, Skoti, Atlanteans, Daimons, Dark-Hunters, Gallu demons, the “original gods of sun and of fire” – I’m not sure I mentioned everyone. Plus the maze in which they are all connected somehow.

Romance
The insta-love is justified with fate, no development.

Characters
Jericho is tortured yet he has compassion and a soft side – unexpected even for him. He is tall and handsome with a lethal aura, and insanely hot.

Delphine is beautiful and perfect, with grace, a playful and caring attitude, and incredible fighting skills.

By the way, in this world all of the male characters are insanely handsome and tall, with a lethal aura, and all the women are petite (except Astrid, who is tall), beautiful, funny and wise.

All in all
I read Dream Warrior two years ago, but I had to re-read it now because I didn’t review it then and I couldn’t remember a word from it.

I started to read this series more than 10 years ago, and I loved it back then. But obviously, my reading taste has changed a lot, and I don’t enjoy PNR books as much as I did. I’ve abandoned not only this one, but many PNR series I had started to read because of the same reason. Sometimes I feel guilty about it, so I read the next one in line, but they usually don’t satisfy me. Sadly, it happened again with Dream Warrior.

This was another good entry in the Dark-Hunter series. Cratus(Jerich) and Delphine were both interesting characters and their romance was a fun one. Outside of the romance their was a ton of action.

Cratus was once Zeus's right hand. He was the man Zeus sent to enforce his justice. That all ended when he failed to obey one of the Greek God King's commands. Cratus was cursed to a life of eternal punishment. At least such would have been his fate if Zeus did not need him to deal with a problem that only he could solve. Dream Hunter Delphine is sent to tempt the surly hate filled ex-God back into the Olympus fold by any means necessary.

The story was a fun one. There was plenty of humor and both Cratus and Delphine were easy characters to root for. Plenty happened in this instalment of the Dark-Hunters series as a new villain arrived on the scene and declared war on pretty much everyone. Those villains were the evil Noir and Azura. Both have potential and my only criticism is that we need to get to know them a bit better and learn what motivates them. Apollo, Apollymi, and Stryker have been such awesome villains, but I'm not complaining that the last two are on the road to redemption. It just means our new villains have big shoes to fill!

This book had a ton of cameos. We got everyone from familiar Dream-Hunters to Olympian Gods and on to old favourites like Ash and Zarek. We also got more fun developments for characters such as Jayden, Jared, and Nick. Add to that the fact that we got to meet a crazy new demon and it meant fun times all around.

This story felt like it was launching a new story arc in the Dark-Hunter series and even ended with a bit of a cliffhanger so I'm definitely looking forward to moving on to the next book in the series.

Rating: 4 stars.

Audio Note: William Dufris was not quite as good this time as he was when narrating the last book but he still did OK.

I think "Dream Warrior" is the first one of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dream Hunter offshoot series that I really really liked. It wasn't the heroine who sucked me in this time, it was Cratus/Jericho all the way. His hardcore attitude for everyone but his gal just made me say, "Awww" and melt a little.

She's a Dream Hunter who determined to look for the best in others. He's the son of War and Hate who has been punished for centuries for showing mercy to a child. She's determined to get him to help the trapped Olympians. As far as he's concerned, the only good Olympian is a dead one as none of them lifted a hand to help him. I'm guessing we might have some good conflict here!!

I enjoyed watching Delphine and Jericho's relationship unfold. I found the pace and reasoning much more believable than others in this series. I loved the banter between Jericho and, well...just about everybody. That he was willing to give Delphine the time she needed (which, granted, wasn't much!) when he had been 'without' for so long caused another one of those "Awww" moments for me. And the icing on the cake was getting glimpses of the Dark Hunter crew once they lent their assistance to the cause.

Hot and another keeper for me. Oh! The cover guy...Yum!

This book was good, but I found it at times confusing. Who the heck are Cratus/Jerucho's parents? I swear she said Styxx, but how would that be possible? Anyway, the dream hunter books are a bit harder for me to understand. Probably because they have a whole different cast of characters, plus many of the other characters, and have different timelines. Anywho, this was a good one. I enjoyed the book a lot. The romance was a bit sporadic since Jericho was so fatalistic and Delphine at times was an idiot. Overall though, I liked both the H/h. There was a lot of action and angst. Nothing was resolved until the very end.

****4 STARS****

Ok, so it was really hard to rate this book. A lot happens, so you must read it.

While the love story here was a bit poor, the events that develop in this book are really interesting. Things between Jericho (Cratus) and Delphine happened too fast. They meet, they fall in love, the spend some days together, they get married. I mean, Kenyon could have spent some more pages to make a stronger bond between them both.

Then I got really confused about Jared and Jaden, they are two really mayor characters in this book, but you don't get a clear idea of what they are or what they can do.

Nevertheless, I loved the ending. Now I really need to keep reading just to know more about was was said. A really good book.

Cratus, the son of Warcraft and Hate, after defying dipstick Zeus, found his powers bound and forced to endure thousands of years of torture. When receiving his punishment all in the Greek pantheon stood by watching, including his mother and brother, with some even looking on in glee due to Cratus’s past deeds.

Delphine is a Dream-Hunter, an Oneroi, she protects humankind from the predators who invade their dreams. Her past is shrouded with secrets, her existence something one powerful God fears. When Cratus and she meet well things take an unexpected turn, altering the trajectory of both their lives. The pettiness and paranoia of Gods like Zeus, and their hunger for power mean danger is close at hand.

Insta-insta love takes place between Delphine and Cratus (aka Jericho) but despite it happening faster than I can blink, I really liked the two as a couple. There’s a sweetness there that just makes me smile in each re-read.

Plus, loved the glimpses of Zarek in this book (I really need to re-read his book - it’s been too long).

After being disappointed by One Silent Night it's taken a while before I felt the urge to pick up another book in the Dark-Hunters series and as much as I've loved some of the earlier books (and Acheron's story in particular!) I have to say I didn't have particularly high expectations for Dream Warrior since it's about characters I don't remember seeing before and therefore didn't feel invested in. I should have known better though because Sherrilyn Kenyon rarely steers me wrong and this book was everything I could have hoped for.

As the son of the gods of Warcraft and Hate Cratus never had an easy life. He spent centuries following Zeus's orders and carrying out punishments on his behalf but when he was asked to kill an innocent child he couldn't bring himself to go through with it. As punishment for refusing to commit murder Cratus was stripped of his godhood and sent into exile on the human realm. For hundreds of years Cratus has lived amongst the humans being tortured nightly by the Dolophoni, he has been kept in isolation and has spent all his time stewing in hatred and wishing for revenge. Now Zeus realises he needs Cratus's help against a mutual enemy who wishes to destroy the world so he sends Dream-Hunter Delphine to try and convince Cratus to put his hatred to one side and ally himself with the gods once more.

I don't want to talk more about the plot so I'll just say that Dream Warrior was a really fun and very easy read. I liked both of the main characters and although they fell in love quite quickly that didn't bother me in the slightest so I found it very easy to cheer them on towards their HEA. There was plenty of humour and action, we're introduced to some new evil characters who will potentially take the series in a new direction and we get cameo appearances from some of our favourite characters from previous books. This was a nice set up for a new story arc and I'm very interested to see where the series goes from here so it definitely won't take me as long to pick up the next book as it did to get to this one.

This is the book that ties all the Dream Hunters together. It also has Ash and a few other Dark Hunters in it, including Nick. (There's a nice little twist at the end with Madoc!)

Delphine and Jericho were really good together. I enjoyed how their story unfolded. Lots of little twists and surprises.

There were a bunch of other interesting characters, Jaden and Jared, to name a few. It was intriguing to see how intertwined everyone is. It also very frustrating and hard to keep straight all the names and exactly what everyone is. It was also confusing because there are other series like this that use the same Gods and characters. I had to stop and remember who did what but I guess if you read enough PNR/UF, eventually you'll run into this.

I would recommend reading the Dream Hunters. Obviously, it would have been better if I had read them in order with the Dark Hunters. You can check her website for the correct reading order:

http://www.sherrilynkenyon.com/book-s...

If you decide to skip the Dream Hunters, you may miss out on some interesting tidbits!

Favorite Line:

"He took her hand into his and kissed her pale, unscarred knuckles. "We can be the blind leading the blind."

Delphine squeezed his hand, "But as long as we're together..."

"Nothing will ever touch us. You are all that matters to me, my angel, and I would walk through hell just to touch your face."

Quick thoughts.

I found this read to be average-good.

The writing and story/plot is not as sharp as her past books.

This one was confusing with all the characters and names that started with "J".

Couple/romance was okay.

He was back.
And he was pissed. May the Source take pity on those who’d caused his mood
Because at the end of the day, he would have none for them.

Another Sherrilyn Kenyon book finished, and another hero that I have absolutely fallen in love with! Cratus is one of the MOST tortured heroes in the series. Banished from Olympus and cursed by Zeus himself (God, I hate that guy!), he has lived a miserable existence on earth for 6,000 years, continuously tormented by Zeus and his cronies. When it is realised that he has the power to defeat a new threat against the world, Olympus sends for him for help. But they are too late, with the bad guys getting to him first and recruiting him to their cause, promising to end his suffering. It is up to Dream Hunter, Delphine, to find Cratus (now going by the name Jericho), and bring him back to fight for the good guys – even if she has to seduce him to do it.

Cratus/Jericho is an amazing character! An angry, violent warrior even before his exile, now he’s even more pissed off and antisocial.

(It) would have been tragic if Jericho were capable of feeling sympathy for someone else. He could appreciate it, but frankly, he didn’t care.

But there’s something about Delphine that draws him to her, and he finds himself immediately protective of her. As a Dream Hunter who is half human, Delphine does have some emotion, and that is enough to spark a fiery attraction between them.

I love the interactions between these two. He’s a big, scary warrior, and even though she’s small, she’s feisty and can more than handle herself. And before too long she starts to bring out a part of Jericho that he thought he had lost and there is some fantastic bantering.

“You really can’t help being an asshole, can you?”
“I probably could, but it’s not worth the effort.”

With both of them having spent centuries alone, they are both desperate to feel some sort of affection, and it doesn’t take long for things to get steamy. And then when the romance comes… swooooooon! Who would have thought the big warrior would have it in him!

“You are all that matters to me, my angel, and I would walk through hell just to touch your face.”

This book is an intense ride! It’s action packed from the very beginning, and doesn’t let up the whole way through. So much happens, with new bad guys Noir and Azura (evil, evil, evil) plotting to take over the world, starting with taking the Dream Hunters captive. It’s up to Jericho and Delphine – with a little help from series faves Acheron (squee), Zarek, Jaden and Jared (big plot developments here) to save the day. We also get introduced to the demon Asmodeus, who is freaking hilarious!

There is a big action scene, but the climax of the book (which includes an epic smackdown!) is more of an introduction and preparation for a huge battle to come. And as usual, little hints are dropped and further twists and plotlines are set up for future books in the series that give you just enough information to drive you crazy with questions and wanting to know more!

The series started with Dark Hunters vs Daimons, but it has become so much bigger than that! Kenyon has created an entire civilisation that mixes with mythology to become this massive world. It seems overwhelming at times, but the characters that she has given us that exist within her world all seem so real, and so easily blend with each other that it’s like you’re living the story right there with them. And I love that she consistently brings back characters from earlier books – there are a number of cameos in this story, and the epilogue had me squeeing like an idiot. But best cameo award goes to Zarek, with this little gem:

Astrid appeared with a crying toddler … Her face distressed, Astrid handed him off to Zarek. “Menoeceus wants his father.”
Zarek glared at her. “Bob is crying because he wants his mother to stop calling him that crap-ass name.” Zarek cuddled the small boy to him as he rocked him gently against his shoulder while he continued to wail. Loudly. “It’s all right, Bob. Daddy’s got you now. I’m saving you from Mommy’s bad naming taste. I’d be crying, too, if my mom named me after an idiot.”

I loved it! 4.5 stars!
