When the cards are stacked against you, the Kings will even the odds.

Ex-Special Forces soldier Anston “Ace” Sharpe is fighting a different battle these days—one involving the world of private security across the state of Florida. As part owner of Four Kings Security, Ace and his fellow Kings tackle everything from armed transport and investigations to cyber intelligence and executive protection. Cocky, fearless, and brash, Ace isn’t afraid to take risks.

After years of working alongside his father, Colton Connolly is ready to take the helm at Connolly Maritime, but his father’s retirement is put on hold when Colton begins receiving death threats. If that isn’t bad enough, his father signs a contract with Four Kings Security to provide Colton with round-the-clock protection, despite his adamant refusal. Colton’s life has been turned upside down, the last thing he needs is a shadow, especially in the form of infuriating, sexy-as-sin Ace Sharpe, who seems to be on a mission to drive Colton mad.

Sparks fly the moment Colton and Ace meet on a sultry night club dance floor. But getting involved with a client, even one as fiery and beautiful as Colton Connolly, is a line Ace is unwilling to cross. Colton might be attracted to Ace, but he’d been burned before. He might be willing to put his life in Ace’s hands, but not his heart.

As the Florida nights heat up, so does their passion, and Ace and Colton are faced with a difficult choice—take the plunge and risk it all, or play it safe and walk away?

If Ace can keep a deadly threat from robbing Colton of a future….

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Charlie Cochet's "Thirds" series. I have read every single book, and I will continue to do so until she stops writing them. I am a real "Thirds Nerd".

https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366

Reading Thirds has thought me something important....that Charlie Cochet is a genius, and so when said genius writes another series... I must read it !!!

https://giphy.com/gifs/fivZUJS87kEGnzQD9R

I am so glad I did....because I really enjoyed this one !!

This book is not just about two men falling in love. It's also about friends and family and the fact that sometimes...those two things are the same...

https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366

Four Kings Security is a security business, which is owned by four friends (family), who were also in "Special Forces" together. King  is the leader of the four, as was the case, when they were enlisted together. Then there is Lucky, Red and the last but certainly not the least... Ace.

https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366

This story is about all of them, but it's Anston “Ace” Sharpe's heart, that is about to be stolen :P

Colton Connolly is ready to take over Connolly Maritime, from his father. There is just one tiny little problem...well Colton thinks it's tiny... He has been receiving some death treats lately, leaving his father extremely worried. Since Colton is not about to do anything to protect himself....his father takes matters in his own hands and hires "Four Kings Security" to guarantee his son's safety.

Colton is not a fan of having his whole life turned up side down. Having control of his own life, is very important to him, so he is not about to just give in. Not even if his new bodyguard makes certain parts of his anatomy tingle...

https://www.google.com/search?q=you make me have dirty thoughts

Ace didn't think he would ever be this attracted to a client. Acting on his feelings would break each and every one of his rules...not to mention the company's... But sometimes rules are meant to be broken...are they not ??

description

I absolutely loved reading this one. It had everthing I love in a book....action, humor, steam, and a great family I would love to be part of !!

I can't wait to read Red's book, and with the way things are right now.. I am sure I will read each and every book in this series !!

Highly recommended !!!

I think this may be the case of “it’s not the book, it’s me” because I really had a hard time connecting with characters and loving this book. 🙃 I think it was also because I had such high expectations for this one and when they weren’t met, I felt like they really fell short. It was a struggle even to finish the book if I have to be completely honest. 😭 So let me state the facts why this didn’t work for me.

1. Why Colton Conelly? Am I the only one who thinks this name is awkward and unattractive? May be I’m being fastidious but I really didn’t love this name. 😕

2. So many characters were jammed in one story. There are 4 kings, 2 other cousins/friends, and other friends and acquaintances of two MCs that appear out of nowhere for no reason. 😁 It was like “Cirque Du Soleil”. 😬 This is the story about Ace and Colton. I want to read about them. I’m not interested in reading the stories of “how I met my partner” of all of their friends and family. 😞 Because the author put too much effort into these side stories, I have no imagination left for the upcoming stories. I know how they will meet, who will end up with whom and how they will turn out. So it kinda spoilt the surprise factor of upcoming books in the series for me.

3. The story was too slow placed for my liking. It goes this way
1-65% UST between Ace and Colton and trust me, it was not sizzling!
65-80% Non-stop sex ….. suddenly 😑
80-100% The actual kidnapping and the plot twists jammed in a few last pages
The story was not balanced for me. I had to push myself through to read until the end. 😪

4. How Colton’s father was very upset when he found out he’s sleeping with his bodyguard to how he suddenly accepted that his son sleeping with his bodyguard is ok and acceptable is in the blink of an eye. It was just unrealistic. 😐

For what it’s worth, I did love how Ace and Colton met in the beginning until around 25% and I didn’t see the kidnapping twist coming in the end and who’s behind it. So kudos for that one. 👏 But the other aspects really fell short for me. I strongly believe that the author’s name or who wrote the book has like 50% impact on the reader’s opinion on a book. 😌 It was because this is Charlie Cochet, I had huge expectations for this book and I felt really let down when they were not met. 😞 If this book was written by an amateur author whose work I’ve never read before, I might be more benevolent and less picky when it comes to rating. 🙂 For now, I’m going to hide in my cave of shame for not loving this book when half of my friends list is raving over this book. 😭

DNF @ 79%

It's been awhile since I've had to DNF a book. And I realize at 79% I should've probably just finished the damn thing, but honestly I just couldn't. What's the point when I started skimming at about 60%?

Honestly the first half wasn't bad. I even kind of liked it. But then I started rolling my eyes. And things just became completely OTT and cheesy. Much like the Thirds series, I might add. #sorrynotsorry

I just couldn't with the sap. I just couldn't.

3.5 Strong Start to a Series Stars!

I admit I’m holding back a bit on my rating here, almost like a figure skating judge waiting to see if the next up is better or not.

Here, Ace is simply doing his job in protecting important mogul Colton. These two of course, clash immediately as Colton doesn’t want anyone encroaching in on his life due to a terrible past betrayal. So understandably, Colton is going to be the biggest brat to Ace and his team, but slowly, as he and Ace get to know each other better due to such close quarters, their fighting each other evolves into fighting their attraction even more.

No doubt, I love Cochet. Her THIRDS series is one of my favorites, and it’s a tall tall order to even come close to measuring up to such a precedent. What this excels at is the humor, the banter, the UST, and the nicely done smex. I’m 100 percent totally on board with a setup involving a security company who’s owned and operated by ex-military tough alpha men who will inevitably fall hard due to lurve. This too is a series that can possibly have a long shelf life, and I have no complaints about that at all! Bring it!

There are quite a few negative reviews on this book because of insta-love, but I liked it anyway. It wasn't as insta as a lot of other books I've read, and I have a decent tolerance for insta-love if I like the characters and feel their chemistry.

I really liked all of the characters in this book. They were funny and cool. Because of this, I even got over one of my biggest pet peeves - stupid names. I mean, this series is just asking for my fury by having all of the guys named after fucking cards. Ace, King, Jack, Red (for King of Hearts), Lucky.. Joker (!). There was even a Deuce who died. I'm assuming he was killed for his idiotic name. So, if I am willing to like a book despite this... it says a lot. (Plus, you find out why they got their nicknames later in the story and it wasn't too cheesy.)

So, these cool guys with dumb nicknames have a security business because they are badasses who used to be in the armed services as special forces. They get hired to protect a rich kid who has been getting death threats named Colton. Colton is not on board with this plan, so he does what all rich kids do when Daddy makes them mad: throws a tantrum.

spoiled babies. When I was a baby I would have killed for a hat like that. But no, I had to crawl around hatless... like a peasant.

Ace is the guy who is assigned to be Colton's bodyguard. Upon meeting him, Colton gets a blowjob in front of him and tries to get Ace to have sex with him. Okay. Not my usual way of meeting someone for the first time, but to each his own I guess. I just wonder if Colton ever considered, I don't know, a handshake instead of grinding his groin against the new guy? Or, a nice hello? Or, basically anything else... ? Instead he does the live version of sending a dick pic as an introduction.

Once Colton gets over his hissy fitting, he becomes a pretty nice guy and Ace is definitely interested in more intense body-guarding. They flirt around and it's all fun and games until the ugly little fact that someone wants Colton dead throws the wrench in this new romance. Which, I have to say.. Rude! Mr Killer, you are totally not cool. They are trying to get some alone time, you creeper!

Better yet, you can go home and get your own life. Or, go live on the internet like the rest of us. We welcome those with psychotic tendencies.

I really liked Ace in this story because he was always cracking jokes. Jilly likes the funny. Mr. Jilly is hilarious and if he ever runs out of material he knows he will be dropped faster than an ice cream cone in a toddler's hand.No pressure or anything.

The only time I didn't enjoy the story was when there was a bit of OTT drama that was also cheesy. But, it was a short bit and the rest of the book was fun. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I did not read what everyone else read. There's just no way. This was nothing but a melodramatic soap opera.

Emotions were all over the place. An MC would go from a raging asshole one minute to a blubbering, crying baby the next. About a topic that didn't even affect him! It was like empathy tears on steroids in this book!

And the MCs went from seriously disliking each other in one chapter to sharing their deepest secrets the next. Wut?

Clearly it's just me. But that was NOT good.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Stupid Insta-Love*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

The book centers around ex-Special Forces soldier and part owner of Four Kings Security (one of the top security companies in the state), Anston ‘Ace’ Sharpe (39) and Colton ‘Col’ ‘Colt’ Connolly (33? 34?). Colton's receiving death threats for being gay, and while he doesn't take it seriously, his dad does. So, said dad, goes behind his back and hires Four Kings Security to bodyguard - with Ace as the lead guard - his son. Let's just say Colton is not happy with that. No matter how attractive Ace is or how he makes him feel.
“Colton is the reason Mr. Connolly is meeting with us.”
“Someone has a problem with Colton taking over?” Red asked.
King shook his head, surprising them. Usually when they were approached by a company like Connolly Maritime regarding a changeover of that magnitude, it meant corporate unrest.
“According to Mr. Connolly, everyone loves Colton. The company has one of the best employee benefits packages in the state, followed by the lowest employee turnover rate, and that’s thanks to Colton. They’ve watched him grow up in the company. There’s no one better to take over. The reason Mr. Connolly is meeting with us is because his son has been receiving death threats.”
Ace was confused. “I thought you said everyone loved Colton?”
“The threats haven’t been in regard to the company, or the takeover, but to his being gay. My first thought was a disgruntled employee, but when I spoke to Paxton Connolly, he rejected the idea immediately. It made no sense to him that someone would have a problem with his son now, when Colton’s been out and proud since high school. Paxton is very supportive of his son, and Colton’s sexuality has never been kept from, or been an issue with, the company. I’ve read the threats, and it’s clear someone’s taken a personal interest in Colton, and the threats have been steadily escalating.”

Overall, I didn't really connect with the characters nor the story. I can see the potential, sure, but as it is now, the book's not for me. I find that it was missing a certain bond between the four kings even though they are supposed to be super close. It has nothing on Unbreakable Bonds series by Jocelynn Drake , where you can really feel the love and bond of the family/friends. She seriously know how to build a bond, and so does this author as she surprised me with her THIRDS series. That has some serious bonding relationship as well. I really liked that series. But I was disappointed in this one.
“You’re not Vin Diesel in a fucking Fast and Furious movie! You’re going to get yourself killed!”
“It’s like you don’t even know me,” Ace shouted with a laugh, swiping his Glock from the holster under his arm. He leaned to the left and fired a warning shot, which hit the left taillight. The SUV swerved, regained control, and then lurched forward at full speed.
“Did you just open fire in a state park? Jesus fucking Christ!”
“Language, buddy. What would Momma say?”
“Don’t you bring your mother into this!”
“There’s nothing but road and trees. Besides, you need to be watching your blood pressure, old man.”

As for Ace and Colton... there was some insta-love here. I think the timeline was only a week. At least that's what it felt like. I hate insta-love. I never should've gone back on my first decision to not read the book (I had shelved this as a 'checked won't read' book, as this one wasn't really worth the time. Nothing really happened until really late into the book, as in pretty close to the ending and it was predictable. I'm not sure if I'm interested in continuing the series. Though King did catch a little of my interest.... so maybe skip the others and only read his when his comes out? We'll see.

“Do you know what scared him most?”
King tilted his head, studying him. “What’s that?”
“Disappointing you. He loves you, King. You’re his family. I mean, you all are, but you…. The way he talks about you. You’re his hero.”
The only sign that showed King was upset was the way his jaw muscles tightened before he answered. “Then he shouldn’t have betrayed me or his brothers the way he did.”

Other Characters:
Ward ‘King’ Kingston (41), owner of Four Kings Security; Ace's boss and ex-Special Forces like Ace was. Although all four Kings owned the company, Ward “King” Kingston was the man in charge,
Russell ‘Red’ McKinley, ex-Special Forces soldier and part owner of Four Kings Security.
Eduardo ‘Lucky’ Morales, Ace's cousin, part of the Hispanic heritage they shared thanks to Ace’s Cuban mother. Ex-Special Forces soldier and part owner of Four Kings Security.
→ Officer Mason ‘Coop’ Cooper, Ace's ex-boyfriend for almost a year; ended because Coop has tons of secret and the couldn't confide in Ace, leading to Ace leaving him as they won't have a future together.
Lucia ‘Tia’ Olga Sharpe, Ace's mother.
Jacopo ‘Jack’ Lorenzo Constantino, ex-Special Forces soldier and been part of Ace’s unit.
‘Joker’, ex-Special Forces soldier and been part of Ace’s unit.
Jay, King’s executive assistance.
Frank Ramirez (43), former firefighter turned club owner of Sapphire Sands. A dear friend (met 13 years ago); appointed himself as Colton’s unofficial big brother, one who he trusted Connolly Maritime with the import of the club’s alcohol. Frank also uses Four Kings Security. The club's a members only club and The four Kings held companywide membership, a perk offered by Frank, thanks to his contract with Four Kings Security, a contract that would continue as long as no laws were broken. The Kings didn’t involve themselves with businesses linked to illegal activities, which meant no drugs or solicitation allowed. Sex was certainly happening in all corners of the club, but it was consensual and no money exchanged hands. Frank Ramirez prided himself on running a tight ship.
Seth, a bartender at Sapphire Sands.
Joshua, (late 20s) Colton hired him as an executive assistant after finding him crying at the club after being fried as an assistant (just gotten the job) for a big law firm downtown because he wouldn't sleep with the boss, Ted Booker.
Nadine, Colton's executive assistant.
Asha, Colton’s household manager
Nolan Stewart, Connolly Maritime senior vice president and a close friend of the family’s. His daughter, Annie and her husband Jeremy Lynch, their daughter and Nolan's granddaughter who is/was(?) sick, Lily (5). Jeremy owned his own successful import company. As of two years ago, he was also a client of Connolly Maritime, thanks to his father-in-law, Nolan. The man was also a bigot who claimed he had nothing against “the gays”; he simply didn’t understand why they couldn’t be happy with what they had and stop pushing their agenda in everyone’s faces. Colton tolerated him for Nolan and his family’s sake. Jeremy tolerated Colton, because he might be an asshole, but he wasn’t stupid. How the guy ended up married to such a sweet, kind-hearted woman like Annie was anyone’s guess. In the years Colton had known him, he’d never once seen Jeremy think about anyone but himself.
Mick ‘the Dick’ Wellington III, an ex-boyfriend of Colton for three years.
Lazarus ‘Laz’ (28), a friend of Colton's. His selfish infamous model boyfriend, Bryan. Laz’s older brother, Gio, who was a good friend and Colton’s old college roommate. Laz is a very talented fashion photographer whose career is finally taking off.
Paxton Connolly II, Colton's father and the current president and CEO of Connolly Maritime Enterprises and Worldwide Shipping Solutions. This is a family-owned business that’s been around since the early 1900s. It employs over five thousand employees worldwide, with a revenue of over two billion dollars. Their company provides everything from liner services to freight logistics, ocean and inland transport, and project management. Due to health issues and advisement from both the family doctor and his ex-wife, Paxton will be retiring, and Colton, will be taking over. Colton has been working alongside his father since college, being groomed to take over the family business.
Ace’s rumble of a chuckle did terrible things to Colton’s groin. “We’ll keep an eye on him.”
Colton hummed as he turned away before anyone could see how desperately he wanted to jump Ace’s bones. “As long as you don’t forget about me.”
“You kidding? I’m having trouble keeping my eyes off you.” Ace’s voice was low and throaty, and he discreetly brushed Colton’s fingers with his own. “Not to mention my hands. You look incredible, by the way.”

Four Kings Security is an elite security firm run by ex-special forces teammates and friends, King, Red, Lucky, and Ace. These guys are the best at what they do and everyone knows it, which is why they are hired by a Floridian business mogul named Paxton Connelly, when his son and heir, Colton Connelly, starts to receive personal threats of increasing concern.

Colton believes his father is being needlessly worrisome and overprotective, and so chooses to act out when Ace is personally put in charge of his private security detail. Regardless of their immediate and combustible chemistry, which neither can actively deny, Colton plays the rich, spoiled brat at every turn, in what ends up being a foolhardy attempt at riling up Ace and his colleagues (but mostly Ace).

The push and pull was fun while it lasted, but soon enough real feelings emerge and Ace’s professionalism gets tested, hard. Passions run hot and loyalties are put into question, all while danger still looms unknown, but at the end of the day, the once in a lifetime kind of feelings Ace and Colton are developing for each other seem to be worth all the potential fall-outs.

Even though this was on the more melodramatic and chaotic side of Cochet’s storytelling, I was still fully engaged and highly entertained throughout. Once again, I simply loved her huge cast of characters and all the potential romantic pairings that were alluded to. Much like in her THIRDS series, I see big potential here and I’m eager to read on.

In my opinion, this was a fun, thrilling, snarky, sexy, and maybe even a little silly, introduction to the Four Kings Security series, and I for one can’t wait for more.

The 'Four Kings' are about four men who served together and lost the majority of their people and decided to leave and start a security business together. They are the best at what they do and their services are high in demand among the rich and famous. Which is why Colton's father seeks their help when Colton continues to receive threatening letters. Colton is ready to take over his father's company but his father halts his retirement and refuses to continue with it until he knows Colton is safe and threat has been eliminated. Colton refuses to take the threats seriously so his father hires the Four Kings to protect his son and by doing so totally turning Colton's world upside down. Colton is furious with his father for taking that choice and control out of his hands. He doesn't believe he's in danger nor does he want this sexy infuriating man following him in his ever waking hour.

Ace Sharpe is a very laid back kind of guy. He really doesn't let much bother him or let things get in the way of doing his job. He's funny and sexy. His loyalty to his brothers knows no bounds. That's why he finds his attraction to Colton unnerving because he is willing to test that loyalty with the very man he was hired to protect. He's never been attracted to a client nor has he ever wanted someone as badly as he wants Colt. But acting on that could not only put his job in jeopardy, but also his company that he owns with the other three kings. Not to mention how his three king brothers would react to that kind of betrayal. He really does try to resist Colton but soon it is just too much and both men give in to their attraction.

These men took awhile to get it together. Colton and Ace clashed majorly at the beginning. Colton with his refusal of needing or wanting a bodyguard and Ace needing to protect Colton and going to extremes to do so when Colton tried to block his every move. It was pretty funny as was their banter.

The reasoning behind the threats Colton was receiving was a bit of a let down. I wanted a bit more action throughout the book but it all got a bit rushed at the end.

Still I really enjoyed this and look forward to reading about King, Red, and Lucky.

Happy reading dolls! xx

Welcome to Sunny OTT Florida!!

Well, since I went into this one expecting a so-so story, I wasn’t disappointed: I got a so-so story. Actually, I got an OTT mediocre story that had me scratching my head and wondering how this could have possibly come from the same author who penned the THIRDS series.

The first part of the book was OK. Typical enemies attract kind of thing with lost of childish antics from supposed adults and professionals. Once our shipping magnate and his bodyguard hooked up, all professionalism went out the window, the OTT endearments and brainless sex came into the equation.

Then, things got—ooohhhhh, wait for it—action-y and suspenseful-ish. Then we’ve got our ex-Special ops bodyguards kicking butt and taking names on the way to an HEA for our lovers.

From enemies-to lovers-to numb wits-to true love in the space of a week? Two? Three? I couldn’t get a handle on the sloppy timeline.

So, if you’re looking for a solid three star read with pretty hot (if stupid) sex, then this lovely 302 page book is your ticket to OTTLAND!

Whatever was happening between them was more than physical, and every minute he spent with Colton was another crack in the wall Ace had created around his heart.

3.5 stars

So, after loving the THIRDS series and reading them back to back in a very short amount of time, it was only natural that I try to read through Charlie Cochet's entire backlist.

Charlie Cochet can write some amazing friendships and banter between the characters of her books. So when I really liked the relationship between the entire cast of this book it wasn't really a surprise. The characters were also kind of what I expected. They were a little OTT but I loved them anyways. Also, I was in the mood for some OTT drama and characters so maybe that's why it didn't bother me that much. It was also hilarious at times.

But there was one thing that I really didn't like and hence, the 3.5 stars. The "I love you" was said wayyy too fast. They had maybe 2-3 real conversations ? I just didn't understand it. It kinda put me off the whole book. I actually liked their romance but it seemed like they were moving at lightening speed.

But not gonna lose hope, I will definitely be continuing on to next book because I'm very curious about the couple and the individual characters. Also, I actually kinda liked the world the author created.

This book has only been out a few days, but it already has tons of glowing reviews. Unfortunately, I'm about to break that string, because this book was barely even ok for me. In fact, I had to force myself to keep reading, and it weren't for a challenge, I probably would have set it aside to pick back up later.

I expected something closer to the THIRDs series, but without the shifters. I expected plenty of action, with some nice moments between the guys, getting to know each other in that flirt/fight way Cochet does so well. Well, there was plenty of "flighting" going on between Ace and Colton, the initial case, the reason Colton's dad needed his own security in the first place, was virtually forgotten until fully 80% into the story. So that means we had 80% of getting to know you, fighting, flirting, and once they finally gave in, way too many consecutive sex scenes. These guys are in their 30s (or more?), their refraction times aren't that good!

Colton actually drove me crazy at the start. He just came across as, not spoiled exactly, he's a good guy, but he definitely went out of his way to antagonize Ace. For the first half of the book, he alternates between throwing hissy fits, and acting all come hither to get at Ace. I'm not even sure when they formed this connection, or what it was based on, other than sexual attraction. It took a lot of pages, but not a lot of actually time between the guys, before they are all over each other, proclaiming to love each other, and moving in.

But, tons of others seem to love this book, so maybe it was just me, or even just my frame of mind when I read it. Hopefully, I like the next book more, but this is sure no THIRDs.

4.25**** stars ♠︎♣︎♥︎♦︎

That was a great read… or uuhm audiobook.

Sweet dislike at the beginning, funny banter, followed by flying sparks everywhere, sweet sweet lovin’ and a little drama at the end. Perfect. I loved it.

And drunk Colton right at the beginning in that club and on the drive home? Hilarious!! I was laughing so hard.

The narration by Greg Boudreaux was also really great. I’m excited for the next installment in this series.

I really enjoyed this and it looks like it’s going to be a fun series ❤️ Ace & Colton we’re birds of a feather. They had chemistry from the start and no doubt this was because they were both risk takers and thrill seekers but once the job began - the job began ! Once they made the decision to break protocol it felt almost too instantaneous... it was a sudden pash that resulted in some long awaited heat. It was certainly enjoyable and I’m looking forward to Red & Laz’s story

With his father's retirement coming up, Colton will soon be taking over the company, Connolly Maritime. But when he starts getting death threats his father hires Four Kings Security for his protection. Colton does not want a bodyguard at all, but that won't stop Ace from doing his job.

Colton and Ace's banter throughout Love in Spades was great. Their relationship doesn't start off on the best foot and Colton's distain for Ace and the other Four Kings Security members was understandable but also funny.

They get under each other's skin and rile the other up. The chemistry was palpable and them hooking up inevitable. Even though Four Kings Security has a rule of not sleeping with clients... oops

The death-threat plotline is pretty stuffed to the end. I would have liked if it was sprinkled throughout the book. It would've added a whodunit aspect.

This is the start of the Four Kings Security Universe so I'm happy to have plenty more books to get to!

Me he descojonado y he disfrutado un montón xD, y en KU.

Oh my word 😱, what a mess of a book
The very beginning of the book was just so good and funny and it was like a pallet cleanser only to be served the worst dish

🔅 the mc’s name Colton Connolly very tacky (I’m just being extra there is a Laz 😂) ok on a serious note there’s so much that was just discouraging about this book

🔅 I forgot that I was reading a book about adults 😬, their dialogue was just confusing , a 40 year old behaving and sounding like an 18 year old , I had to remind myself that they are supposed to be adults

🔅 too many characters being introduced in one book , it was just so disorienting I forgot that the focus was supposed to be on Ace and Colton and to top it off chapter 8 was not about the MCs but some drama from side characters breaking up and pushing each other while the MCs take the back seat

🔅 the MCs coupling which was like a scene out of a very bad porn clip, loud and filled with “dirty” talk 🙄 not once (the torture 🙄) oh after their first coupling less than 24 hours they exchanged test results (need I say more 🤦🏽‍♂️)

🔅I am disappointed really, especially after looking at the positive reviews

🔅I actually liked the twist toward the end of the book , it was like a much needed desert after all the mess . I’m still going to read the series though, there’s still hope . I’ll end my rant here

This was a good low angst read. I liked both main characters, and it was a great beginning to a new series. I can't wait for more. My only issue with it was my issue with every "bodyguard" trope. Why is it grown adults can't keep their hands to themselves for a limited time!? It's not like they have to wait years to get together. I mean at the most a couple of months, and they can be together without regrets. Nobody jeopardizes their livelihood or possible life. It's just not something I personally can understand. I guess the answer is... we would have no story?

I'M SO HAPPY!

description

description

I don't think there is anything about this book I didn't absolutely love and adore. Ace and Colton had amazing chemistry right away - similar to Dex and Sloane's for me, that kind of connection is how well Cochet wrote these two (I love Dex and Sloane to bits, so it says a lot for me how much I loved these two) - and Cochet's wonderful humor was present right away and there throughout, and I love how much this made me laugh as well as how these two made me melt with their sweetness (and also fan myself from their hotness together ;)).

And some might think Ace and Colton moved a little fast, but I didn't care because we got the scenes and the feelings between these to make it 100% believable for me when they fell in love and knew it after only a few weeks - maybe less than that? I'm not sure. But a short amount of time, nonetheless.

But these two were just so into each other from the moment they met, and they were smitten like crazy too.

Colton tries to resist it because things in his past has made him untrustworthy of those who seem to be taking any control away from him.

But Colton's resistance is part of the fun, and the hilarity that ensued as Ace tried to guard Colton and Colton made it as difficult as possible was the best.

But of course Cochet also included the sweet moment, the moments where they two were serious and talked to each other and opened up, and allowed for each other to fall deeper in love.

I was just enraptured from the very first page, and I'm already excited about Red and Laz's story (they were adorable!) and hopefully *crosse fingers* Frank and Joshua's too. I also can't wait for Lucky's story, because he's apparently a big player, loving to have sex with a lot of people - men and women - a lot of the time, but I want to see who it is that can capture his heart, and then King too. King is the leader of their four-man led group of Four King's Security, and he's the glue, the leader, so I can't for his as well.

Ahhh, I'm just loving all these characters, I loved Ace and Colton's love story, and I'm so excited for everyone else's story too - and with Cochet writing them, I don't doubt they'll be as amazing as this was!

I was actually surprised by who was behind the threats against Colton that led to Four Kings having to be hired by Colton's father to protect him, and I felt Cochet did a good job of leading you to believe one thing so you were shocked when another thing was revealed. A few things happened that I did NOT see coming at all!

I thought I had it all figured out, then just when you think you do, you don't. (Although looking back now, I totally see. Not on the first read though.)

Two very very enthusiastic thumbs up for this amazing start to what is sure to be an amazing series. It had all the things I loved about a Cochet novel - humor, wonderful romance, and great suspense. DEFINITELY recommend! I just feel so giddy after reading this because it was just so damn good!

Merged review:

Very quick, fun read about a dancer, Kit, and the bartender at Sapphire Sands, Seth, that was featured in the Four Kings Security full length books.

I thought they had great chemistry for such a quick read, and yeah it happened quick, but this is a quick, 60 page read. Not a lot of time for build up and the falling in love portion. But I believed it with these two, and their attraction was palpable.

Definitely recommend for a quick, fun read. (Also a great light read if you've just read a very heavy, emotional book.)

Merged review:

Cute little short focusing on Leo and King having their first Christmas together and Ace being Ace, which I always love to see. Ace is kinda like the Dex of this group ;)

Yikes...underwhelming, to say the least

I know I’m probably the only one that’s giving this less than four stars that I’ve seen. And I’ve loved Charlie Cochet’s THIRDS series so reading this book was a little horrifying. It did not have the same sophistication and level of writing of the THIRDS series.

I honestly read the first four chapters then skimmed and skipped the rest. Colton was described as lovable, likeable, very respected etc etc. But the first four chapters had me deducing he was more a spoilt child than anything. Quick to temper, irresponsible, irrational and not very likeable.

The kidnapping attempts were sloppy and over so very quickly. And the reasons for it were so.....ridiculously mind blowing. Like, really? That’s why he was threatened? It didn’t even make sense to grab him that last time.

Sigh... it’s painfully disappointing to be so underwhelmed by an author I know can do much better. I expected more depth in the characters. I expected smarter criminals. I expected nail biting suspense. Got none of it ☹️

Fairly new to this genre and new to this author. The more I read the more I love.

Action, hot men, high tech team, suspense and steamy romance combine for a terrific story! Both MC's are strong and competent men who are connected with friends and family. Ace and Colton's story touched my heart and i loved both MC's. I enjoyed that both men were successful and connected with friends and family. Together they were willing to be vulnerable with each other and that just made me gooey and happy.

Recommend this read. Can't wait to read book 2.

Really didn't like this one at all.

This book was so ridiculously bloated with completely irrelevant side characters; repetitive, rehashed content that popped up in almost every chapter; and in depth backstories for every single character. I kept forgetting the actual plot, which isn't the sign of a good book.

There was so much about other people that the MCs relationship came across as an afterthought, and then it progressed so rapidly it felt entirely forced for convenience. I didn't buy them as a couple at all.

Also, why tell me so much about Laz and Red when their book is next? I can't think of a single reason that I would now go and read 300+ pages about them when I already know their backstory and that they're pretty much together. I have zero interest in knowing any more about them, especially because I have a feeling their book will also be full of irrelevant content.

I really feel like this needed to be brutally edited because it felt at least 100 pages too long, and it just didn't flow or feel coherent.

There was so much focus on all the pointless filler that when the 'bad guy' was finally revealed, the book was 97% done! It was so rushed to conclude the story that my only thought was 'I slogged through all of that for this shitty ending?' Maybe cut out all the stuff that really didn't need to be there and focus on the actual story and relationship...

Can safely say I won't be reading the rest of the series!

LOVED IT!!! Well this one blindsided me with how much I enjoyed myself...full review to follow soonish!

5 stars for 4 Kings...

‘Love in Spades’ is the first book in Charlie Cochet’s new series ‘Four Kings Security’ and seriously what was I thinking when I decided that I was going to take a pass on this series? Don’t get me wrong my decision had nothing to do with the author or even the book blurb it was based solely on the fact that I’ve had a lot going on in my life lately and I didn’t feel like I had the time to commit to reading another series…well, I was wrong I mean sleeps over rated right?

Ok, enough about my poor life choices let’s talk about something important…like this book!!! I loved this book. First off of you’re a fan of Ms Cochet’s THIRDS series than you know this author creates amazing alpha characters and this series is packed with them…from Ace and his fellow Kings to Colton Connolly the man who’s more than a match for Ace and who very quickly captures Ace’s heart.

Ace and Colton are explosive and initially it’s not really in a good way…an entertaining and more than a little amusing way but definitely not good as far as Ace is concerned, but when these two men meet for the first time it’s a battle of wills and one that both men are determined to win.

Colton’s father has hired ‘Four Kings Security’ to protect him after it’s discovered that Colton’s been receiving death threats. Needless to say, Colton is beyond angry about this as he believes that the letters are simply idle threats. Which leads to Colton’s father’s decision to go behind his back and hire private security upon meeting with them it’s decided that Four Kings will deal with the determinedly stubborn heir to Connolly Maritime with its own form of stubborn and obstinate…enter Anston “Ace” Sharpe, who is assigned to be Colton’s bodyguard.

From the word go Colton decides his mission is to antagonise, frustrate and just generally annoy his new shadow, no matter how annoyingly sexy he is. While Ace is equally determined to not let Colton’s antics do anything but entertain him…game on with these two it’s a battle of wills and may the most determined man win and hopefully keep Colton alive in the process.

I so loved Colton. I was worried that he was just going to be another spoiled rich kid. Fortunately that idea was quickly put to rest as Colton proved himself to be a kind, generous, determined and confident individual willing to not only defend he loves and but those who are in need of his help because of circumstances not of their own making…in short Colton’s a good and decent guy and not the self-centered or arrogant jerk who has a light-bulb moment causing him to realize the error of his ways…sorry but that’s a big turn off in my reading world because rarely do I buy into it.

There’s a lot of background to be had in this story and thankfully it’s been woven into the story and given to us through memories and shared conversations keeping it from being an overwhelming deluge that can often slow a story down. Ace is one of the co-owners of ‘Four Kings Security’ he and his fellow Kings are all ex-Special Forces soldiers and the foundation of this series. If it’s an issue of security these are the men for the job. Along with Lucky, Red and King, the unofficial leader of their family. As well as their shared time as Special Forces operatives I’m pretty sure these men all have their own story and as this series progresses I’m hoping we’ll discover them all.

Admittedly there are some cheesy nicknames going on here…we’ve got a security agency called ‘Four Kings Security’ with an unofficial leader who goes by the name ‘King’ and his partners Ace, Lucky, Red (because he’s a redhead but also interesting coincidence here…cards come in 4 suits and two colors…black and…you guessed it ‘red’, just sayin’) and there’s also Jack and Joker or was that Jester…well, it was one or the other and maybe it was the mood that I was in because I have to admit there are times when something like this would have me rolling my eyes but to be honest this time around it just amused the hell outta’ me and I found myself listen to see how much and how often there were references to playing cards or even card games, I probably should have kept count just for the hell of it but I do know it wasn’t nearly as much or as often as it could have been so for me it was more cute than overly cheesy.

While I really enjoyed the relationship between Ace and Colton and how it developed with all of it’s wit, humor and tension the part of this story that clicked for me was the mystery. I must admit…I did not see that one coming. I had all kinds of theories on who and why and in the end, I was wrong…close but no cigar. It’s been a while since a mystery has stumped me like this one did so well done, Ms Cochet, I really enjoyed staying in the dark until things were revealed.

And last but, not least the reason that this was a solid 5 stars for me and not 4.5 or even 4…scratch that I’m pretty sure even if I’d been reading this one it would have gotten more than 4 stars from me but what cemented it firmly as a 5-star audio book for me was of course the narrator. Greg Boudreaux. I’ve listened to over 30 books narrated by this very talented person and without fail I have enjoyed his narration each and every time and frequently more than once, regardless of how good the story was or wasn’t and ‘Love in Spades’ was no exception to this and I’m looking forward to revisiting this the men of ‘Four Kings Security’ in the future…especially if each subsequent story provides me with the entertainment that I enjoyed this time around. I’ll be more than happy.

4.5 Stars - A brandy new Charlie Cochet series? Sign me up! You get an idea of what this is about from the series title and blurb, but as with her other series, there are so many other fabulous details that make up this series starter that have this one running right out of the gate.

Four Kings Security – made up of four ex-military friends/brothers in arms (Ace, King, Red and Lucky) who have one of the most well known and successful security business in the area. They’ve earned their nicknames in the service, but they’ve carried that over into their business as well. The names, tattoos, the business motto, crest logo, etc. all form the foundation and basis by which the business was formed. As is Ms. Cochet’s style, she gives us great characters who are charismatic and fun, yet tough and emotional. It is easy to see the bond these guys share and how much they mean to each other.

In Love in Spades, Ace (one of the Kings), is the best man to take the lead in providing security to a business heir who has no interest in having personal bodyguards. But, as the Kings were hired by his soon-to-be retired father, there isn’t much he can do. Colton has his reasons for not wanting anyone controlling his life, and he puts up a good fight in the beginning. Unfortunately, or fortunately, Ace gives as good as he gets. It doesn’t take long for them to have a truce of sorts and for the threats to escalate into something more serious. The sparks fly right from the get go between Ace and Colton, but when the attraction takes over, things really explode.

There is definitely some reluctance on Ace’s part, as he has so much to lose. But they realize fairly quickly that there is something special between them that make it worth the risk. Even a misunderstanding is dealt with rather quickly putting them right back on track. Needless to say they made a great couple and were definitely perfect for each other. The rest of the cast of characters are all interesting as well, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the other Kings. Looks like Red is up next, and that looks like it will be a great addition as well, with an opposites attract type of relationship. Regardless, I hope we don’t have to wait too long to find out. Definitely recommend giving this series a shot.

DNF at 74%. I tried and tried, but there is too much going on with other characters and I hated the way the MCs eventually got together. I’m gonna fold on the series.

Four Kings Security is composed of four ex-military friends and brothers in arms ...Ace, King, Red and Lucky...who have one of the most well-known and successful security business in the state of Florida. They’ve had their nicknames since their time together in Special Forces in the service. They decided to carry them over into their business as well. The names, tattoos, the business motto, logo, etc. all form the foundation and basis on which the business was formed. As is Charlie Cochet's style, she has given us great characters who are charismatic, and fun, yet tough and not afraid to be emotional. It's so easy to see the bond and love that these men share and just how much they mean to each other.

One of the Kings, Ace, is the one selected to provide security to Colton, the son and heir to a well-established business. He has absolutely no interest in having personal bodyguards...but Four Kings Security has been hired by his soon-to-be retired father, so there isn’t much he can do except go along...but not willingly. Colton has good reasons for not wanting anyone to have control of his life and puts up a good fight in the beginning. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, Ace can give as good as he gets, and it doesn't matter that Colton doesn't want his protection...he's been given a job to do and darn it, he's going to do it come Hell or high water! Before long Colton starts to look at Ace differently and they start to form a truce, while the threats start to escalate into something much more serious.

Now the sparks start to fly between Ace and Colton, and when the attraction takes over, things really explode. There is a bit of reluctance on Ace’s part, as he has so much to lose, and doesn't want to let his "brothers" down. They realize quickly that there is something special between them that makes it all worth the risk. Needless to say, they made a really great couple and were absolutely perfect for each other.

The rest of the cast of characters are all interesting as well, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the other "Kings". I believe Red next, and that looks like it will be a great addition as well, with an "opposites attract" type of relationship. I definitely recommend this series to anyone that likes stories that show true friendship, love and respect along with some really hot romance. Just keep in mind that it is two guys.

♠️♠️♠️♠️♠️ 5 STARS ♠️♠️♠️♠️♠️

While scrolling through my GR feed I came across updates for Diamond in the Rough and reading them and discovering they feature two of my favourite combination’s m/m and security, I decided to give Love in Spades a go, my OCD kicks in always start with book one.

Charlie Cochet is a new author for me I love her writing style and she managed to surprise me and after reading and loving Love in Spades I will DEFENITLY be continuing with the Four Kings Security series and checking out her other m/m books. (This is my first 5🌟 read on 2019 - FINALLY).

Everything about Love in Spades was a winner for me, I loved Ace, King, Lucky and Red the comradery between them they are family/friends and business partners and I especially loved all the banter between them, the first chapter was hilarious I was hooked from there.

Colton Connolly is a wonderful caring man, but he can be stubborn and as soon as Ace and Colton meet the sparks fly, Colton hates having his privacy intruded on and he does not make things easy on Ace at the beginning.

I loved how their relationship progresses and these two are super sexy, this story is filled with action, fun and steam.

Looking forward to continuing this series SOON and getting to know the other King Security men better.
