This book suffers from the problems common to all second books in a trilogy. The joy at finding a new story has gone – you know what is happening and generally what to expect – but there will be no proper resolution (or there would not be a third book to come). That is not to say that ‘Nebulous’ is not a great book – it is. It still has the wonderfully strong female lead (and narrator) Lila, with her reverse harem of unbelievably gorgeous shape-shifting boy-dragons, Tom, Ki and Santiago – now joined by Ki’s older brother, Fang. Tara Palmer is back, still evil, and now with an equally evil side-kick, Jimmy. Lila’s father is still a prisoner of Tara, and the gang have to find a way to free him. So, what is new? New family members for both Lila and Tom are introduced. Lila’s aunt arrives to teach her about being a warden. Tom looks for aid from his brother, but will Trent turn out to be good or evil – with his family history it is a 50/50 bet. And something is happening to Lila – sudden, excruciating pains, dodgy eyesight – it does not look good. Lila and all the boys lose their homes and a dragon war is approaching fast. Because it is the second book, it is no spoiler to say that they don’t all die. But things certainly do get sticky for a while. Luckily, there is one intervention that no-one has yet suspected (not the Spanish Inquisition, but in Dragon terms, quite close). While the first book had episodes of everyday, teenage life in it, this book is in full-on fantasy mode (apart from one small trip to the local council offices). Some reality does intrude though. Have you ever wondered what happens to shape-shifter’s and super-hero’s clothes when they change? Why are there no scenes of Superman and Supergirl sewing their buttons back on? The matter is dealt with clearly here. If they have time, the dragons undress first – if they don’t, the clothes are shredded. In either case, it is essential to have spare caches of clothes on hand for when they revert to human form. Santiago and Tom buy their T-shirts in bulk – Ki is a bit more picky in what he wears, but still has to have many more changes of clothes than a normal teen. Their clothing allowance must be massive. Lila was able to restrain herself somewhat in the first book, as she probably had too much on her plate. Now, she just cannot stop ogling the guys – belatedly averting her eyes as they appear naked before her. And it is not just her guys – one of the new dragons also gets the once-over: “He was like a young Idris Elba, perfect features and all. My eyes skimmed up his abs and chest before resting on his face”. There are lots of abs, chests and chiselled jaw-lines to be ogled – Lila seems to be attracted to anything male that might have scales. Will she make a choice? I really enjoyed this second book. The first book set a very high standard, and while this book didn’t quite reach such dizzying heights, it came close, and I am certainly going to read the final book in the trilogy to find out what happens to Lila, Tom, Santiago and Ki – and to dragonkind. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book at no cost from the authors in exchange for an honest review
“Luminous” book.1. Set the stage, introduced the characters, was strong, fresh, inventive and distinguished. “ Nebulous” continues the powerful storyline with Lila the Plucky, spirited female who’s problems have only just started. Losing her dad was bad enough, losing everything is unbearable. She has the loyalty of the 4 dragon shifters who never leave her side. Now romance is instigated, how could she choose. Her first one was Tom, the son of Tara Palmer, the woman who has destroyed Lila’s life. Humanity is Tara’s next target. Tom has a secret, becomes withdrawn, struggling with his own conscience. Lila then finds help from a surprising, unfriendly source who wants to help her harness her magic. However not even that prepares her & her boys for the fight of their lives. The action in Nebulous is unrelenting, at every turn danger and torment increases in intensity. Then Lila receives a bombshell, such a trauma to her well being, which will leave her changed forever. Will it help or hinder the war of wars. There are many dragon books out there at the moment but none that have the raw realism Ingrid Seymour & Katie French can create. From the strength of emotions to a world that is unquestionable, they have skilfulness of conception that is faultless. Independently these authors are incomparable. Together they are unrivalled.....I can’t wait for where book.3. Will take us
I adored the first book in this series and was a little apprehensive of being disappointed by the second book. It didn't disappoint in the slightest. It had me on the edge of my seat - full of suspense and twists and turns in the plot. The end was completely unexpected for me, I loved it. Can't wait for more dragons and more Lila!
In this second book in the series Lila is determined to do whatever it takes to save her father from the evil dragon Tara. She and her four dragon shifter friends are true blue loyal to her and try to help in any way they can. I liked Lila’s snarkyness and strength of character. However, I wished she would just pick one of the guys and stick with him but nooooo, she has to have some serious make out sessions with each one. Each of the guys had a unique personality which was very well fleshed out. I liked getting to know them. I thought the battle scenes toward the end of the book were intense and very unpredictable. Lots of surprises. I think the YA crowd would love reading this. And even the not so YA such as myself would find this story very entertaining.
The story picks up basically straight from the ending of Luminous, with Lila and the boys still reeling from Tara Palmer having taken Lila’s Dad, from the fight with her, from the monster that she turned one of her classmates into and was trying to turn Lila into. Lila is now the Warden of the Lighthouse with no concept of how to do the role, of her abilities, or how to master them. Worse than that, there are multiple Dragons out there threatening not just her Father, but all of Human Kind, and she is powerless to act. This is an excellent sequel in which Lila is faced with a multitude of challenges, and the introduction of several key new characters, plot lines as well as the continuous building of the incredible world that the Authors have created in which there are Shape-Shifting Dragons, and have been for thousands of years, living in harmony with Humanity through their relationship with Wardens – a relationship we learn all about in this book. One of the best new characters in this book (without giving away spoilers) is Lila’s Aunt, Scarlett Drake. She is possibly the best character in the book (in my lowly opinion of course), but as you will learn, she is much more than just an ‘Aunt’. This is where the Authors have outdone themselves, with exceptional Character work. Every single character that you come across in the book seems to have a back-story and so much depth, giving the story so much extra depth and making it that much more interesting. Great characters, combined with an outstanding world, and some brilliant plotlines allow for a wonderful story that is not only a lot of fun, but is creative, captivating, and so enthralling, you have a hard time putting it down. Nebulous sees Lila not only struggling to gain control of her powers, but to retain the seat of her powers, the Lighthouse, for if she loses that, she loses her ability to be a Warden, and all will be lost. On top of this, she learns that she did not escape so lightly from the touch of Tara’s poisons, and that the stuff that Tara was injecting into her might well be working on her anyway, even though she escaped. Suddenly everything becomes a desperate fight against time, to save her Father, the Lighthouse, and Herself, can she survive? This is aimed at the YA audience, but it has no age limit, anyone who wants a good read can pick it up. It is a lot of fun, great characters, excellent story, not to be missed!!
To be frank, I’ve never read a book by Katie French before, but I’ve loved lots of books by Ingrid Seymour so I figured it was worth the risk to give their co-authored Dragon's Creed series a whirl, even though I was joining in on the second book, Nebulous: A Reverse Harem Urban Fantasy. Well, the good news is that while I clearly missed things (yes, I’m going to have to go back and read book 1, Luminous, now), I still was able to follow along and totally enjoy this book. Lila McCarty is a great character, just the sort of kick-a** lady I adore, and her four sexy drool-worthy dragons are just the sort of guys that make me wish I had my own “reverse harem”. Add in a strong baddy in Tara Palmer, another - powerful - dragon shifter, and s tension filled adventure of a plot that’s really well written and filled with great characters, and a neat magic system (I love the lighthouse beacon that’s the source of Lila’s growing magical abilities) and the result is pure fun. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to going back to book 1 and then on to the next book in this series.
Lila and her dragon boys are back and trying to recover from what happened at the end of book 1. Of course things do not go as hoped and Lila does not find her father immediately. Instead things seem to be going downhill for them all and then they chose to fight back and more craziness occurs. There were random twists, funny scenes, and some kissing involved this time. Of course some new characters both good and bad show up along with the baddest of them all. Just a great story that kept me glued to the end to see what would happen between Lila and the boys and on the grander scale who would win the war that I knew was coming. Plus lots of dragon time and I enjoyed watching Lila and the boys become closer to each other.. Just a great story that kept me reading to the end.
KEEP ON ROCKING!!! Holy CRAP Batman! This is one exciting, fast paced, action packed, spine tingling, thrilling, page turning bombshell that hooks you from the start and reels you in for the duration. This dynamic duo has raised the bar once again. Separate they're unbelievable, together unstoppable. These two authors with their talents and imagination weaves worlds so realistic you get lost in the tale as it spins. Their insight and attention to detail brings this read together with such realism it can steal your breath away. Katie and Ingrid did an exceptional job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Fantastic job Guys, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.
Oh wow! I do like the second book a lot. There was much more of the "harem" there, of course, but it wasn't the thing that I liked the most about this particular book. IMHO, it had more action, as well as the story was more interesting, and I didn't expect the ending to be quite that entertaining... with the B.R. in the picture. (Are we gonna see more action from him in the next book, I wonder?)
Of course there are still a lot of unexplained things that I assume will travel to the book #3, so I don't keep the authors responsible here. All-in-all, a very entertaining read, that will keep you interested long enough to finish this book in no time.
Wow, just love this series. Teens and young adults will love it. Lily is trying to come to terms with losing the lighthouse. Her dragons are standing with her even though their family's will not. Tom has an ideal to help stop his mother, but will it work? Lila finds out about her aunt being warden too. Will her aunt help? What happens when Lila losses her warden power that she still has not learn? Will they ever stop Tara before she kills or takes over everything? I received a free copy for my honest review.
This is a great follow-up to the first book. Lila is trying so hard to keep everyone safe and has the guys on her side. She needs them with a deadly enemy who seems to have planned for everything.
I have been enjoying the series. I like how strong Lila is and she is very honest with those around her. She is learning more and more about this new world and doing her best to make the right choices. It is very well-written and has a great mix of action and adventure as well as some romance.
Book two did answer some of my questions but I still feel like we are skimming the surface. The war is over before its begun and Tara is still on the run. Lila sees different qualities in the guys buther stronger bond is with Tom yet she does not pursue that. It is frustrating that no one is telling Lila the rules and laws of the dragons yet they are happy to belittle her when she screws up. They should be helping her learn their ways. Too maby secrets and a young girl seems to be the only one capable os stopping Tara before it is too late.
Lila was a totally different character then in the first book. And the adults were just awful. Everyone blamed Lila for everything that was going on even though she was just doing the best she could with the very limited information she had. Her aunt was a total shrew who acted like she was a lost cause when she had no training. Lila losing the light house was stupid all she needed to do was set an alarm. The romance is non existent and disappointing.
My second read from the collaborative efforts of Ingrid Seymour & Katie French. Brown, I’m familiar with having read a several of her books, French not at all. A wonderfully crafted captivating read with characters a reader can really get into that takes off from the opening pages & never stops. I look forward to Perilous, Book 3. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018)
The story continues smoothly. I liked this part much better than book 1. Lila git to stand on Her own and That was what I was looking for! A girl That will have some Power. Ad its clean YA reverse harem There is no steamy situations if you are looking for one. Still relationships are Good and growing. For sure I will grab book 3.
Lila is headstrong and yet vulnerable at the same time, I can identify with that. Great continuation and we get to explore the other characters a little more in the second book, which is great and totally amazing. Also the vision I have of those beautiful boys is criminal! lol! I have never been much for dragons but, I want more!
I was very surprised to hate this book so much, since I liked the first one. I gave it two stars for effort. I can not stand such immature heroines. I understand wanted to save your father, but allowing people to be put in danger and dying for it without remorse is horrible. She is a weak kid with a bad attitude. Hard pass.
A good follow up to book 1 and just as compelling a read. The story and characters are stronger in this book, even though the genre isn’t my normal read but I like Katie French as an author and read all her books no matter what the genre. Recommended read
2nd book in the series and I enjoyed it again. Lila and the boys are getting closer to finding Tara. Lots of things happened in this book. I enjoyed the ending and plan to read the next one in the series.
A young girl saving money for college and how life changes very dramatically when dragons are on the scene. Four shifter dragons and Lila trying to save her kidnapped father. Good interaction with all players, good storytelling, good book. Ready to read the next book.
Interesting tale! A story about a girl, Lila, in a parallel modern world where dragons exist. Her father has been kidnapped by an evil dragon and she is working with her four young dragon friends to find and save him. An entertaining story with lots of action and interesting twists.
Still an interesting story. Interesting twists. Sime sad moments. The relationships between her and the guys is kind of shallow. We miss a lot of good interaction and there's no real definition to their relationships. I am hoping that will change in the next book.
This is the book where the romance starts to really happen as does the fighting and rather gory scenes. Absolutely excellent and it definitely beats the first book for drama!
Has anyone else noticed this book is incorrectly described as 9 pages long on Goodreads! According to my Kindle it is approximately 192 pages long. That aside I found this book a good read ☺
Loved book one and book two did not disappoint. Looking forward to reading #3 now!! Love dragons and this series has them in spades. The writing is on point 💘
