The only thing that sucks worse than being attacked by a vampire is turning into one.

Nadine Levitt expected her twenty-eighth year of life to include wedding cake and a work promotion, not a three-day stint as a bloodsucker’s all-you-can-eat buffet. She escapes her captor’s swampy lair alive, but not quite human.

Turns out, turning into a vampire isn’t an overnight thing. More like a year-long marathon of misery—insomnia, teething, and weird urges. A whole year of struggling, and failing, to come to terms with losing her humanity. To reconcile her goodness with the monster she’ll become. And the only one who can guide her through it isn’t a person at all, but the stupidly attractive, reclusive vamp responsible for her condition.

Nadine can’t change her fate, but she won’t go quietly either. With her clock running out, a deathwish, and an unexpected companion, she’s determined to make the most of the time she has left.

One year of humanity. An impossible choice: murderous immortality or a noble death. Which will she choose?

Becoming Vampire: Diary of an Alligator Queen is a standalone vampire novel with strong romantic elements and mature themes including violence. It’s intended for a mature audience.

5 'beautiful, heartbreaking, swooning' stars

The original title of this book is Diary of an Alligator Queen. It was the title that caught my attention and the reason I didn't dismiss this book as just another vampire romance. I assume the title was changed to indicate the genre, I mean, who would expect a vampire romance behind the title Diary of an Alligator Queen. In my opinion, the second title sounds like a total cliché. And even if the story is actually far from the cliché, it fits it perfectly.

Our heroine Nadine gets bitten by a vampire. Naturally, nobody believes her. This is the real world, of course vampires don't exist. Everyone tries to persuade her that is was a large dog that bit her, or an alligator or maybe even a crazy human. But then she starts to notice changes in her. I found this part very fascinating. Vampire books rarely take transformation into focus. Vampires are usually already turned or transformation happens rather quickly. However, in this book we got to see how Nadine is turning, what is happening to her. And it's described so realistically. I don't have any other word, yes realistic. Like it's a perfectly common thing to turn into a vampire. It doesn't sound supernatural or magical but real. And we see her struggling with that fact. She doesn't want to become a vampire, she is terrified of turning into one. It's an interesting aspect, also from the moral point of view. She is deeply troubled by the prospect of becoming a creature that feeds on human blood.

I very much liked this part of the story. We don't often see a moral dilemma of drinking human blood to be one of the major problems in vampire books. At least not in a way that it's addressed here. Not from a perspective of a vampire in a way - I'm an evil creature because I drink blood. In this book, it's more like from a human's point of view. Considering, Nadine is still mostly human when she is thinking this - that people would need to die in order that she would survive.

But, of course, it's not everything about morals and contemplation about life and death. There's a romance part as well, no need to worry. Our poor Nadine, who is totally confused about what's happening with her, has million other problems too. For instance, her ex-boyfriend, who is kind of a jerk, a police officer, who is sure that she is killing alligators, and the vampire, who bit her. Her vampire, that's how she calls him because he doesn't have a name or at least he had forgotten he ever had one. He's a brilliant character. He has been in hiding for the last hundred years, trying to starve himself to death, so his way of thinking is a century old. It's very entertaining to watch him discovering new things, like showers, hamburgers and extremely short women's skirts, which he doesn't approve of. (He's such a cutie.)

Also, I really liked their relationship. There's no insta-love. Sometimes they act like a teacher and a pupil, other times they are lovers, or they don't seem to have any significant relationship at all. Things are progressing slowly but with much more meaning. You really get to feel the connection between them. Not just some primal lust. They are lovers, not only for the sake of fucking but because they have feelings for each other. They are a beautiful couple. Sex is not as dirty bloody hot as I usually like but it's deliciously erotic.

I didn't expect to love this book so much. Especially after the beginning that was not exactly mind-blowing but rather uneventful. Around 20% I really fell into the book. It's so full of everything - humorous conversations, witty comments, sad moments (I almost cried that one time), passionate sex, inspiring love stories, and I most likely forgot to list a few things more. Thurtfuly, I can't recommend this book enough.

Congratulations to all of you who stayed with me to the end of this long track of thoughts. Clearly, I forgot that I'm writing a review and not a constructive critique for comparative literature. Still, I hope, I inspire you to read this books. If you're looking for a slightly different vampire book, then look no further.

He took my face in his hands, bringing my gaze to his. In it was everything: hunger, gratitude, passion, regret, and love. Love most of all.

I almost DNFed this a few times. It was... rather boring, albeit well-written.

My main problem was I didn't understand why the MC made most of the choices she did. They were so random. For example, after she realizes she's turning in to a vampire, she decides to become a vampire hunter so she's not a traitor to her race (humans). I just... why? And she has a dream about how the vampire who made her treated her somewhat indifferently before they formed a relationship. In retaliation, she gets dressed up and goes out dancing. For reasons.

Not my type of vampire story. 2 stars.

I read my first vampire novel, the original "Dracula" when I was a teenager (over 45 years ago) and that started my love affair with this genre. Therefore, I am always looking for something new & different in my vampire books.

This book definitely fit the bill! Nadine is in the wrong place at the wrong time & is attacked by a man that she insists was a vampire. Her boyfriend & her doctors tell her that it was a dog attack. Unsatisfied with this answer, she returns to the scene & is almost killed by an alligator. But, she is rescued by the same man who attacked her earlier.

This book shatters a lot of the long held vampire myths in a unique way. The characters are wonderfully written & the eventual love between Nadine & her vampire is beautiful. The book was a very emotional read while Nadine tries to decide what to do about becoming a vampire. She finds that it isn't a quick transition; instead, it takes a long, tortuous year to make the change complete.

I will definitely be looking for more books by Ms. Reid. A wonderful addition to a very crowded genre! I will not forget this book for a long, long time. I was gifted a copy of this book by Shifted Sheets & chose to review it.

Not at all what I expected

Funny and sad and hot and full of a human making human choices before she stops being human. Suffers from a dreadfully misleading title and a poor synopsis.

Narrator Review:

If I sounded even remotely like Caroline, I would not have chosen the standard monotone voicemail greeting. Let's be honest. People would call me all day and all night just to listen to my answering machine because it would be five freaking minutes long. Yes. Please.

I love Caroline McLaughlin and you all know this by now. Her tone is deep and so, so raspy, but it's never tired. It's like she's been drinking whiskey all day, well, without the whiskey. You know what I mean...

Long story short, no one has a voice like Caroline.

Her comedic timing is pretty perfect in every book she's performed—and there's a lot of humor in this one!—but there's an eau de Caroline here that really resonated with me. If you've listened to some of her other narrations, this one is very different. Diary of an Alligator Queen unveils a different skill set I didn't know Caroline had. If I could put a name to the way this audiobook made me feel, I would call it Naughty Smile Syndrome. Do not listen to this audiobook at work because you will have a lascivious grin on your face all day (trust me on this one). Listen to this in private. 😏

Caroline, I love you, yet I still kind of hate you. Voice envy. Life isn't fair, friends.

Book Review:

"Ten years ago, he'd have spelled trouble. Age and maturity made it possible for me to simply imagine licking his dimples and file him in my spank bank."

LOL!

When I first saw the title of this book I thought Nadine was an alligator shapeshifter. Shows how much I know...

This. is. so. much. better. than. that!

We are first introduced to Nadine. She's got the perfect life, the perfect doctor boyfriend (hubba hubba!) and she appears to be totally happy. But, as we know, looks are deceiving. Gah, her beau should be called Doctor Douche! He's not good enough for her...but I still kind of loved him too...I'm sick-headed, I know. But Winter Reid did an amazing job formulating these characters.

Nadine just doesn't realize that there's a better life for her. There's also a better man...

Meidias. Swoon. What a vamp. What a name! Well, if it is his name. He's so old he wouldn't remember.

Nadine is attacked by a vampire but everyone keeps telling her it's a dog bite. *snort* So she plays investigator—I love this side of her personality!—and goes back to the crime scene. DUN DUN DUN! She nearly gets eaten by an alligator! Have y'all seen an alligator? They're huge. 🐊

But of course, the swoony Meidias saves her. Ha. Turns out that Meidias is the one who nommed on her neck in the first place.

Now, she's turning into a vampy vamp and her life is getting a serious face lift.

This paranormal read has a very contemporary vibe. It's unique in every way! Add Caroline McLaughlin as a narrator and it's a done deal. Nadine doesn't want this new life. She wants to live happily ever after with Mr. Wrong and go back to her ordinary life. (Doesn't sound so perfect anymore, eh?)

But then something changes. She sees her life through a different lens. Perhaps it's the fact that she's becoming immortal, maybe it's because Meidias is showing her all she's worth. That man. Lemme tell ya.

I loved Nadine. I usually gravitate toward the hero in books, but I could not help myself from being drawn to her. She is unintentionally dragging herself through the mud under the illusion that she's actually happy, but she just doesn't know any better. Then she's stuck in this limbo of being the predator as well as the prey.

But you know what? I have no idea how Winter Reid did it, but Nadine's final transition was completely unexpected. It was emotional, physical and psychological. I didn't know what to expect in the beginning, but by the end I had Naughty Smile Syndrome and now I just want to find a swamp and some alligators to talk to. Maybe Prince Charming will come my way.

Are there any swamps in Idaho? I'm going to go look. Please hold.

...

I had this on my TBR after LOVING the author's The Mountains That Ground Us late last year and finally got round to KU'ing it as part of my 'I really want a vampire story that's different but not too different' search...

This is an unusual take on a vampire transformation purely because it doesn't happen overnight or over the course of just a few days like most others. It also smacks of Stockholm syndrome but with an attacker, not a captor, as whilst it's not a romance story as such, there is a relationship that develops between Nadine and her 'maker', who actually violently attacks her not just once, but twice as I recall. And that is the crux of why I think I didn't love it as that is a narrative choice that I cannot and do not gel with in terms of a romantic or even just a sexual relationship.

It's a well written, at times beautifully written book, and there is a sense of both urgency and melancholy and a struggle to accept what is happening to her but as other reviewers have said, I could not understand many of Nadine's decisions. I also found there to be some holes in the narrative such as when she finished at her job, when was she feeding her cat (and why was the cat not afraid of the vampire???) and where on earth in the South the book was set, which considering how very atmospheric it is was really annoying to me. Thank fuck though that the dream she had of her poor kitty starving to death didn't come to fruition!!!

Despite not loving this book, I will still read more from this author, because the first book I read of hers had such an impact on me.

A girl is attacked and everyone tells her it must have been a dog. Was it? She remembers in her nightmares that it was a man - yet not a man. As she searches for answers she is attacked again. This time by an alligator. But something saves her. What or who?

I was very confused by the name at first, but it is explained finally late in the storyline. It’s a bit slow as far as action goes, but still keeps you curious enough to stick with it to see what’s going to happen next. The heroine was someone I liked one moment and didn’t the next, however. Just an odd feeling sometimes that she was vacillating a bit too much. The sex scenes are explicit and steamy, the other characters were endearing. You even feel sorry for her doctor boyfriend even though he was technically an asshole.

As an independent reviewer for Romance Authors that Rock I gave it four hearts. It was interesting enough, but I don’t envision myself rereading it.

To be quite honest, I only picked up Diary of an Alligator Queen because I LOVED Winter Reid's dark fairy tale re-tellings in Tales of Love & Woe. I know she writes beautifully, and trusted her to put her own spin on a vampire story, which is a sub-genre that's become a bit predictable for me.

And she delivered. An earlier book to Tales of Love & Woe, Diary of an Alligator Queen already shows Winter Reid's sure hand with atmospheric description and storytelling, and had a good helping of dark humour to stop the story straying into melodrama. While the plot itself held no real surprises for readers of the genre (although there were lots of fun little twists on vampire lore that kept things interesting), it was handled beautifully, and I read it in two sittings. I absolutely recommend it not only to anyone who's still loving vampire stories, but to anyone who has become burnt out on them. It'll renew your faith in the genre.

9.22.17 - This book was really a good one to read if you are looking for something different as it takes you into a world that is different from other vampire books. Winter is going to take you on a ride of emotions that is exciting, captivating and well written. Loved the main character as well. She was strong and independent but struggling with the new direction her life is now. If you are a fan of vampires, this just may be the book you are looking for. I voluntarily read an Advanced Readers copy of this book.

Amazing

This book is breathtaking. I won’t summarize the plot beyond it is a completely new take on vampires. It is like nothing I have ever read before in the absolute best way possible. I cannot stop thinking about it days after finishing it. Just do yourself a favor and buy it, it is heartbreaking in a beautiful way and a happy ending that I really can’t put into words. I am a jaded reader with a low BS tolerance and this book blew my mind. I have a new favorite author!
