Gunner Hext here. Being a detective for the Unseen world has its challenges. My informants are goblins and giant rats. Headquarters doesn’t give me the support I need. And creatures cross over and start attacking Normals. All in a day’s work. To stop a dangerous drug from killing more unsuspecting Normals, I’ll have to use all my wits and powers to stop the criminals and keep the city safe. At least for one day. But is this a simple drug bust, or is there someone with more power lurking behind the scenes? I guess I'll find out the hard way. I’m Gunner Hext. I’m an Edgewalker. Fans of wizard detectives, magic, fantasy creatures, and mystery will love this series. Gunner battles monsters, sorceresses, and bureaucracy to make sure the job gets done. EDGEWALKER is approx. 9,500 words. The series is episodic - each book is a complete adventure and can be read alone, but the overall storyline progresses with each installment. A cool magic system, efficient and effective world-building, and a format that gives you a quick satisfying read while leaving you wanting more, makes this fairly simple story a winner.
Gunner Hext is a detective for the Unseen world. A world which involves magic and supernatural creatures like goblins, gobblers, kmets, Elves, Ogres, vampires etc. As an Edgewalker, it's Gunner's job to keep humans safe from these creatures (harmful ones) and things that goes bump in the night.
Normals are dying over a drug produced in the unseen realm called stardust, as an Edge-walker, it's up to Gunner Hext to dig deep and find answers. He gets his answers from unlikely places, e.g from a goblin and a rat. This leads him to a powerful sorceress who he fights but she gets away. R.J. Batla sure didn't disappoint.
Edgewalker: Season 1, Episode 1 (Book 1) (Edgewalker Series Season 1) by R.J. Batla has an interesting premise. Edgewalker's motto is "We protect you from things you didn’t even know existed." Hext is a Edgewalker charge with aving Normals from all manner of monsters and demons from the hidden world. When those from the hidden world cross over, Normals usually can't even see them...until they attack. Hext is armed with a variety of magic spell from which he is able to choose 6 or 7 each day.
When someone begins bringing in a drug called Stardust which kills a good number of Normals who try it, he must track down the culprits. And the adventure begins!
Batla deftly combines the feel of Harry Dresden and Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Edgewalker, an urban fantasy that takes place in an unseen side to the urban sprawl. The climax is a little abrupt for my taste, but this is a fun, quick story with interesting worldbuilding that suggests the modern magical world may have some vices and procedures all too familiar to our domain. More if you please, R.J. Batla.
I always appreciate a new twist on a comfortable theme. Brings new possibilities and entertainment. Perfect book for my day today. Just the right amount of balance in humor and action. Excited to see what development comes next!
This is some great urban fantasy. R.J. Batla does an amazing job telling a story the mixes some great elements. Humor, adventure, and a cool urban fantasy setting to boot.
I won a copy of R. Batla's Edgewalker: Season 1 Episode 1. Longer than a short story but shorter than a novella, Edgewalker is a fast pace and exciting read blending urban fantasy, detective driven crime novels, and myth and magic with just the right touch of grit. The villain is a surprise and you really route for the protagonist. I can hardly wait for the next episodes. I would recommend this to fans of urban fantasy, cyberpunk, detective novels, and even sci-fi enthusiasts looking to branch out.
