Raising money for the amazing National AIDS Trust.
This is an enjoyable anthology. I never really an anthology reader in a first place, but Rainbow Romances is surprisingly a good one, and I found myself really liked this. Especially Stripped Bare, it was so sweet and adorable. The rest was good stories, about coming out and the struggled just for being who you are and what you are. Just like some people said : If God hates me for being gay, he could come to me and tell me Himself.
As this one is for charity and raising money for NAT (National Aid's Trust.), why don't you give it a try?
Overall, this collection is decent. It’s a quick, easy read with a variety of styles. There’s plenty of romance, but only a couple of these ended up feeling like they fit strictly within the romance genre. On my part, that’s not a complaint. I tend to like those kinds of stories. For someone looking for very clear romance, they might end up a little disappointed.
On the whole, I thought the lesbian/FF stories were superior to the gay/MM stories. It could be my own personal preference, but there are some common factors. A lot of the gay stories seemed to focus on abuse, trauma, and/or beating, which was hard for me to read. The lesbian stories, on the other hand, emphasized queer joy and awakening to self, which was a pleasure to read.
The other thing that surprised me is that this was for an AIDS charity, but there isn’t even one story that includes HIV+ characters, not even the one set in the 1980s. It seems like that’s still an off-limits subject for a romance story, sadly.
The anthology is worth picking up in order to support the charity. Different stories may appeal to different people, but we can all agree that it’s for a good cause.
Total rating: 3.5 stars
Individual reviews:
Stripped Bare, G R Lyons: This was okay. Cute, fluffy, maybe a bit over the top on the hurt/comfort angle. That’s not my thing, but it is for a lot of other people. Ty read as babyish to me, and I’m not sure there was quite enough space to deal with his mental health issues in such a short span. But it was very sweet and the writing was decent. 3 stars
Broken Defences, G R Lyons: This one, too, was a sort of hurt/comfort story. I was somewhat put off by all the posturing and the immature way they talked about sex. There was some weird stuff about gay stereotypes as well. Both this one and the previous one are set in the same world as the author’s novels, so I might be missing something from not having read them. But I suspect the author’s work just may not be for me. 2 stars
Online Casanova, Michael Ferrante: I liked this one a lot. I don’t know if it’s actually the author’s memoir or if it’s a fictionalize account or what, but I loved the personal feel to it. It’s very relatable to anyone who has been on a search for Mx. Right. My only issue was that it needed some tighter editing to eliminate the constant run-on sentences. 4 stars
Far Water, Amir Lane: This is a great story. It drew me right in and held me until the end. I can’t say much because I don’t want to give spoilers. Not a traditional romance but certainly captivating. 4 stars
Something To Hold On To, Carmilla Voiez: A very sweet young adult romance with a true happily ever after. Another relatable story for anyone who has harbored a crush on a best friend. 3 stars
Bedsitter Christmas, Melanie Quinlan: This is a cute holiday romance. I have to admit, I was a bit put off by the violence in one section of this. I had the same problem with the main character as in one of the other stories being really immature and not in an endearing way. Still, the story itself is cute and offers a hopeful ending. 3 stars
Until My Dying Day, Sarah Beth James: This is the longest story in the anthology, which also means it’s one of the best developed. It wasn’t bad, though I’m not entirely sure the author captured the US educational system. I wasn’t clear on how the setting and characters were chosen. I can’t really speak to whether this story is good representation, as I’m not Native myself, so I can’t critique that aspect, though it did hit me a bit funny. I did like that it has a happy ending, and I think it’s good for young people to see that even after a difficult life, hope and joy are still possible. 3 stars
Selia, Marolyn Krasner: This is easily the best story in the anthology. Not only is the writing incredible, the story’s concept is unique. It’s more literary than romance, which is fine by me. The main character’s feelings were so familiar and easy to relate to. The end made me cry, not out of sadness but out of a sense the main character had triumphed. Every woman should read this story regardless of her orientation. 5 stars
GR Lyons-Stripped Bare 4.5* Sev and Ty were cute. I liked watching their story develop from co-workers to more. This was a short story, but a lot of details were put in a small number of pages. There was character development, growth, and a very solid believable HEA at the end. I was intrigued and interested in both of these guys as characters, and I enjoyed the story a lot. This was one of my favorites in the anthology.
Amir Lane-Far Water 3.5* I admit that I didn't see where this story was going, and when it went there I cried. Well written, but really not a typical romance story that I enjoy with an HEA or even an HFN. Very bittersweet.
Sarah Beth James-Until My Dying Day 3* I liked the overall message, but I felt at times like the narrator/MC was yelling at the reader and blaming us for stereotypes rather that telling a story. It dealt with some difficult topics (suicidal thoughts and attempts, depression, bullying, family abandonment), but it also showed acceptance, love, and perseverance. It was a little disjointed at times for me, and it felt like we the reader got the whole story and then at the big speech at the end we heard the story again (in a cliffs notes version). I think it would've worked better if the story was the speech; it would've flowed better.
Melanie Quinlan-Bedsitter Christmas 4* Very sweet story of Raoul and Nick and their favorite Christmas memory almost 30 years prior. There were a couple of tidbits thrown in that I wish we knew more about (how did he lose his memory? how did he get into the music industry?). This has the makings for a great story to tell us more. The beginning was written very well, and I would read more about these guys and how they got to 30 years later.
Carmilla Voiez-Something To Hold On To 2.5* I didn't love this one. Jenny and Lucy are 15 years old, but they were written in a way that made me think they were older (they seemed to be off and doing whatever all the time and Lucy seemed to have dated half the boys in school). For being best friends, this felt like a coming together for convenience story rather than something that had substance. I didn't feel any connection, and it was clear that Lucy didn't really either (poor Jenny who "loved" Lucy).
GR Lyons-Broken Defenses 4.5* Beni is a weapons and combat master who also happens to be a mage. Kyle is coming to him for self defense lessons to protect from bullying. They have a connection immediately, and their time together gets pretty steamy and fun. We jump ahead to see that they are still together and still have great chemistry. I would've loved more about them. Very sweet story. My other favorite of the anthology.
Marolyn Krasner-Selia 3* Pretty interesting concept, and a bit out there, but far fetched as far as romance goes. There was really only 1 MC with a crush in the periphery. This was mostly just about Selia and some weird plant growth that she gets.
Michael Ferrante-Online Casanova 3.5* We get a whole slew of bad relationships and dates until we finally come to Mr. Right. It was cute and focused on how they got together, but there was not enough about Mr. Right. I would've preferred a story that continued on a little to give us a hint as to why this final Online Casanova was the perfect guy, but it fell a little short.
Overall, this anthology had a mix of stories. I loved some more than others, but that is typical of any anthology. The only mini issue I had was that it was touted as a Romance anthology, but it wasn't all really romance. There were some that had hints of romance or where romance took a back seat to a different story. Otherwise, it was a nice collection. 3.5 stars for the overall collection.
I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC provided by LesCourt Author Services
GR Lyons Stripped Bare * I liked watching the relationships develop. Danny, a caring father figure matchmaker. Severin and Ty, a friendship and then more. The story jumped a bit from kissing to married and making love. I do like that we didn’t get the details of their affection, with all they had been thru.
Amir Lane Far Water* This was a stirring story. I liked the friendship and closeness that developed between the two girls. Avery being honest with Irem and the closure Irem needed in order to move on.
Sarah Beth James Until My Dying Day* Prologue- The bit against prejudice was perfect. Francis is bullied beyond the point of it being called bullying. He is put in the hospital several times for being himself. This is an intense story and I challenge anyone to read it who suffers from depression, loss of self-worth or loss of family due to their not accepting you for the way you are. This is a very powerful story.
Melanie Quinlan Bedsitter Christmas* This is a quaint Christmas story of memories. While Raoul feels the negative, Nicky is more positive. They bring out the best in each other.
Carmilla Voiez Something To Hold On To* Jenny defending Lucy against a verbal attack by her ex’s friends was awesome! Lucy is experimenting with her sexuality while Jenny knows hers. It’s about having the courage to explore.
GR Lyons Broken Defenses* This featured three minor characters from three different stories. Shifting Isles books 7,8,9. I wasn’t sure if this was going to make a good story, as I haven’t read the characters before. It definitely worked. There was a year lapse in time though.
Marolyn Krasner Selia* Selia suffers from interspecies cohabitation (plant, animal, human), brought on by a lack of any strong emotion. An emotional status which changes the body. Most would not experience it this way. A very creative story.
Michael Ferrante Online Casanova* In trying to find a lasting relationship, he goes online. He finds, ones he nicknamed as Shady, Limp, Uncommittable, In-betweens, Steve, and Jake. Then Albert, his Online Casanova. My problem with this story was, when Mike was ‘getting close’ he stopped and returned the favor. Does that mean he stopped when Shady was getting close too?
Conclusion: There are some talented authors in this anthology and their writing compliments each other’s stories. While some stories were spot on, some were missing something that could have made the story feel more complete. Each story in its’ own way told of overcoming an obstacle or hardship which would make the characters stronger.
MY REVIEW IS BASED ONLY ON THE STORIES I READ. I DID NOT READ AND REVIEW, Until My Dying Day by Sarah Beth James & Bedsitter Christmas by Melanie Quinlan.
Stripped Bare by G.R. Lyons – 5 Stars “Because I wanted to take care of you.” Love Sev and Ty. I’ve never heard of The Matchmaker Trilogy, but I will be reading the other stories in the series. Sev and Ty are both damaged. In very different ways, but in ways that showed each other they were so good together.
Far Water by Amir Lane - 5 Stars To really care and love someone no matter who or what they are can be so beautiful, if only you allow yourself to except it. Avery didn’t care about the differences she had with Irem. Only that they connected and that she made a promise to Irem and would keep it.
Something To Hold On To by Carmilla Voiez – 4.5 Stars “I stood up and punched Dom's nose.” You go Jenny!!! Beautiful, just beautiful. I could feel the longing and anxiety Jenny was going through being in love with her straight best friend Lucy. I ache to know more.
Broken Defences by G.R Lyons – 4.5 Stars A sweet, cute story about Kyle who keeps getting picked on, so he looks for someone to help show him how to protect himself. Only to find Beni showing him what real love is.
Selia by Marolyn Krasner – 4.5 Stars The events leading up to why Selia needs to speak with someone from the Rare Plant Society are a little bizarre, but different from the norm and I enjoyed that. The concept of what happens to her when she has low self-esteem, and how it also helps her to realizes she is beautiful in unique and kept me interested in knowing how it would turn out for her.
Online Casanova by Michael Ferrante – 4 Stars I enjoyed Michael telling us his experiences with his few male relationships and how he just knew once the right man entered his life, that he would be his forever. I’m so glad Shady, Limp, Uncommittable, and The In-Betweens didn’t workout and that Michael didn’t settle for less then what he deserved.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.
Stripped Bare (4.5 stars) is a super cute little jewel. Ty and Sev work as strippers, and as they get to know each other outside of work, they fall in love with each other. Germophobe Ty, the little guy, or baby doll, as Sev calls him, is the sweetest thing ever. ***********************
Far Water (3.5 stars) is a nice story, something completely different from what I was expecting, for sure... ***********************
Until My Dying Day (5 stars) is a beutiful, emotional, deep story about emargination, depression and the healing power of friendship and love. This is also about family not being a matter of blood, but a matter of choice and love. It keeps you reading with a lump in your throat, and most of the time you just want to punch everyone that let Francis down in the face, and you get so angry you want to scream, but let’s not forget that this is actually reality, and unfortunately these things happen in real schools and between real people. I love Xander’s strength, Francis willingness to heal, and also his attachment to his roots. Sarah Beth James is a new to me author, and I have loved this short story so much, I am gladi t was not too short; as a matter of fact, I think I would have read and loved a full-length, 500-pages book of this story! ***********************
Bedsitter Christmas (3.5 stars) boh… spinoff di una serie ***********************
Something to hold on to (4 stars) nice teenage story of friendship developing in love and of discovering new traits of one’s sexuality. ***********************
Broken Defences (4 stars). A touch of magic and a great deal of chemistry!
A very lovely and sweet collection of romances! Definitely worth the price.
Stripped Bare: 5/5! Loved this! How CUTE! A tale of two exotic dancers finding love and understanding in each other.
Far Water: 5/5! Tied for my favorite of the book! A spooky-bittersweet paranormal tale of two lonely girls meeting on a bus... The ending had me Feeling Things.
Until My Dying Day: 4/5! A very emotional tale of extreme abuse survival and how kindness and love aids in healing. (Contained my favorite quote in the whole book!)
Bedsitter Christmas: 5/5! SO CUTE! Sometimes you don't need a lot of money to enjoy holidays with your loved ones.
Something to Hold On To: 5/5! A story I could absolutely relate to... Being young and questioning your sexuality and having feelings for your same-gendered friends can be such a struggle.
Broken Defenses: 3/5! A story of feelings between a martial arts master teaching a student self defense.
Selia: 6/5! My other favorite story in the book! I loved this creative telling of a woman who grows plants on her body the more she represses her feelings.
Online Casanova: 3/5! A tale of the struggles of online dating.
I absolutely enjoyed the slow burn with Sev and Ty! So many beautiful moments where these guys really connected. I so loved everything a stuffed animal to germ masks! Creative and touching story of two men finding love and happiness. Would love to read more about them and Danny the club manager!
Broken Defenses:
Beni and Kyle have a whole ton of baggage to overcome so that they can become the lovers and partners they are meant to be! Beni has some unusual challenges that come with his job as a mage and self-defense instructor. Kyle has a whole bunch of issues from being bullied and abused by for being gay, including ex-boyfriends. I enjoyed how these men got to know each other and became so much more. Love has a way of bridging gaps and mending hearts.
Michael Ferrante: Online Casanova:
An entertaining sometimes sad look at dating and trying to find a healthy and loving connection. Our MC does find a great match for himself using an online dating app, however it is with much perseverance that he finally makes that special connection!
Stripped Bare G.R. Lyons 4 stars This is a very sweet story about two young men that find each other in the unlikeliest of places. Sev and Ty are perfect for each other as Sev needs to look after someone and Ty has not had anyone in his life since his brother passed away when he was seven. The ending is great and I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Far Water Amir Lane 4 stars A weird and quirky story with a very unexpected and surprising twist. I think it is great and definitely worth a read.
Online Casanova Michael Ferrante 4 stars It takes meeting and kissing a lot of frogs to find the one you will be with forever. This is a sweet and funny story about one man’s journey to his HEA and the men he meets along the way. I really enjoyed this entertaining short story.
I enjoyed reading all of the stories in this collection but the above three are my favorites.
This is turning out to be a great anthology. Stripped Bare and Far Water are the opening stories, and they are both so full of emotion. Stripped Bare is about a couple who were introduced in the Matchmakers Trilogy, which I haven't read yet. This story makes me want to read the trilogy! Sev and Ty are absolutely adorable, and the fact that neither has family to fall back on just makes me more anxious for them to find happiness. They are strippers, but there is an innocence to both of them. In Far Water, a f/f story, Avery meets Irem on a bus. Avery is on her way to a new life in Ohio after aging out of foster care, and Irem is going to meet her estranged father in the town of Far Water, after being abused by her aunt's boyfriend. This one was beautiful and painful, and I loved it so much. I'll update my review once I've read the other stories in this book, but I have to say that it is just wonderful so far.
I am reviewing the anthology as a whole, as you can read the blurb for each individual story.
This was not my usual genre, but I found this anthology to be an enjoyable, quick, easy read. These eight short stories are all about finding love, as well as, finding the courage to show that love to that special person. There is a good mix of stories, so there really is something for everyone and you just might find yourself a new favorite author (or two, heck seven).
The only thing I would have liked to see or have – is that some stories could have added a few more paragraphs to really bring a punch to the ending, but overall I really did enjoy this anthology and all the characters!
Purchasing this anthology helps to support the NAT (National Aid's Trust.), One-click today and support these seven talented authors and a great cause at the same time.
There were 2 stories i read a page or 2 and realized they weren't genres i enjoy reading so I skipped over them. The stories I did read were pretty good but only 1 was phenomenal. I should mention that this a pretty tame for sexual content and more geared to YA readers. Below you will see a post of each book individually. I hope you all pick up this book to help the charities the proceeds are going to.
Online Casanova: This is the story of a young twenty something trying to find forever instead of one night stands. it was a nice read and probably the most racy (if you could call it that) of them all.
The review refers only to Far Water by Amir Lane This is a love story of Avery and Irem, two teenage girls, and that's all I can say without giving spoilers. It is beautiful, very emotional, and a bit sad. I had an inkling that the author could write a really good romance but this story has surpassed all my expectations. How is it possible to convey so much emotion in so few pages is beyond me, but this story made me feel so much. Wow, just wow.
Rainbow Romances Anthology A variety of books, some I enjoyed, my favourite Stripped Bare by G.R Lyons and others not my cup of tea, but nonetheless a good mixture. What's even better about this book is all the proceeds go to charity. So if you buy but only read one of the stories charities still benefit. LOVE IS LOVE!
Read a book and donate to charity! Far Water by Amir Lane, Something to Hold On To by Carmilla Voiez, and Selia by Marolyn Krasner were my favorite stories.
