A gripping crime thriller that sees newly promoted DS Grace Allendale return to her home city of Stoke-On-Trent after the death of her estranged father George Steele. Grace and her mother had luckily gotten away from her abusive father while Grace was still young, but George's subsequent family weren't so fortunate. The Steele family have now set themselves up in their father's stead as local crime bosses, and the return of their half-sister, a policewoman to boot, causes more friction amongst the family. Then murders start happening, the victims all linked to the Steele family, and Grace has her work cut out for her to track the killer, especially as many people, on both sides of the law don't trust her.
I found this book hard to put down, racing through it in a day to find out who the killer was. Mel Sherratt has written a wonderful book, the characters are all too real, and I found myself cheering on Grace as she was faced with pressure from all angles. This was my first Mel Sherratt book, but it won't be my last. I'll be waiting impatiently for the next installment of Grace and her team. Recommended to all lovers of crime fiction.

I was a fan of two of Mel Sherratt’s other series, so I was pleased to get a chance to undertake her newest. And this one has a great premise. Grace’s father had two families. While her mother took her and escaped an abusive marriage, the other family stayed in Stoke-on-Trent. Years later, Grace is on the force, newly promoted to DS and has been recently transferred back to Stoke-on -Trent. Meanwhile, her half brothers have inherited the largest crime syndicate there. And the first murder Grace is called to investigate takes place at their gym.
Everyone here is keeping secrets. Grace, especially, from her team. Sherratt has once again created a strong female character you can believe in and get behind.
The writing is straight forward, the plot well thought out. Several plot twists and I didn’t see the ending coming.
Very well done and I am looking forward to the second book due out in April.

Ah, vintage Sherratt!! I love Mel Sherratt. She is such a versatile writer. Her language is brit grit lit. She is a talented author of police procedurals, psychological thrillers, contemporary/women’s fiction, crime fiction, and suspense. I have read most of her books, and though it is hard to pick a favorite, this one ranks highly. I have to admit I was disappointed in her last novel, She Did It, but I’m not the biggest fan of psychological thrillers; her other fans loved it. In any event, Hush Hush hit the spot for me.
Our protagonist is Grace Allendale, a newly minted DS moving back to her home territory, Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. Ms. Sherratt places most of her stories in this city, which is her hometown too. Write what you know is always good in my book. The crux of things is that Grace happens to be related to several of the suspects in a serial killer rampage. I immediately liked Grace. She has mega demons as do most police procedural protags, but gosh, Grace is nice. And strong. There are some brief throwback chapters to her childhood, which greatly added to our understanding of who she is. Grace does have issues fitting in with her new team (Allie Shenton’s old team, hooray!) because of trust issues, but I found this complication added a further layer to the tale.
There is a lot here to like. My guesses as to the identity of the killer(s) and the motives behind the murders were all over the place, and I loved where Ms. Sherratt ultimately went with this. A number of nice twists pepper the way. The wrapup is well done and not abrupt (I hate abrupt endings). And I just loved “the feel” of the story. It is pure Sherratt with themes of good police work empathizing brains over forensics, estate life, distinctive personalities, gritty (but not terribly graphic) subject matter, and straightforward excellent writing.
The second book in this new series will be out in April 2019, and I plan to be one of the first to get my hands on it. If you have not read this quality author, give her a shot. Though you definitely have your choice of genres, her distinctive style infuses them all.

5☆ A Taut, Pacy Crime Thriller, I couldn't put down!
Hush Hush is a fast paced chilling police procedural that mixes with a gripping crime thriller. I literally couldn't put down!
This is the first book in a new series and wow did it go off with a bang!
I can't say anything about the plot for risk of giving anything away, the blurb says plenty.
But what I will say is, Grace is the new DI, and she's about to make a HUGE impact on Stokes gangland. But there's only one drawback.... She's hiding a big secret and things are about to get messy!
The murders are gruesome, graphic and brutal. But just who is picking off the Steele's crew and acquaintances?
The police procedural was cleverly researched and executed seamlessly I felt like I was apart of the team and investigation.
The Characters are a cast of multi-layred, perfectly written, challenging, and very believable characters.
Hush Hush is a taut, pacy thriller, with exciting twists, that has dark undertones in all the right places.
A riveting tale filled with colorful characters, chilling crime scenes, realistic police procedural, a dark and sinister gangland, with plenty of secrets to hide!
It's an enticing mix of gripping suspense, with an engrossing storyline I couldn't put down.
I am so excited for Mel Sherratt's latest series, I can't wait for the next instalment! Bring on book 2!

Hush Hush by Mel sherratt is a great guessing game of a police thriller.
It's page flipping, exciting with murder and family drama thrown in.
I've read a few police procedural series and they all start to be the same this one is different as it has just that little something extra.
If you enjoy edge of your seat police procedural thrillers I recommend this one.
I'm looking forward to see what comes next in this series.

Killers on the loose.
This one kills anywhere they feel comfortable with and most of all safe.
This of course can’t continue and Grace Allendale has to help solve this terrible crime and with her team bring the killer to justice.
There is one thing though......
It leads to her family. The steele family well known for their criminal activity .
Grace had a violent father.
This is his extended family, her blood.
Her Team are not the easiest to work with, she is forever in doubt with them, she feels she’s forever proving her ability, her duty and her loyalty.
But when it’s family, when it’s your own blood you have to bring to justice what then.
It’s a very powerful book with lots of low punches.
I do believe it’s her best book yet (apart from The Estate series which wasn’t crime)

She had been based in Manchester and her husband had died two years previously.she is in charge of a new team and it does not sit well with all of them. Plus she has to keep her relationship to the Steele's a secret. Her first case involves her half brothers and sister, who she is estranged from. The Steele's own a gym, but they are also one of the most powerful families in the criminal underworld. The first murder is off the gym's employees. It's a brutal attack. Quickly, other murders take place, and they are just as brutal. Who is behind these murders?
This is the first book in a new series. This is a captivating and quite a suspenseful thriller. I really like gangland rivalry books and this one did not disappoint. I have not read the Allie Shenton series, of which this book mentions her a couple of times, but they are on my tbr list. I also like the family/police connection. I had no idea who was behind the murders but I was shocked when it was revealed who it was. This is a promising start to a new series and I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Tick Tock, when it's released early next year.

I am a huge fan of this authors books so was very excited to see that she was writing a new series. Grace I am sure is going to be a massive hit with fans new and old.
Grace has returned to her home town and finds herself working on a case which means she has to have dealings with family that she would rather never have to set eyes on. Having had a violent father growing up, they certainly weren't happy times for Grace and she wants to forget all about it. Sadly her estranged family are very much a reminder. Grace has had quite a lot to deal with in her life and I have to say she was very brave coming back but I had to salute her for doing it.
The murders are pretty gruesome to say the least but ensures that it grabs hold of the reader making you turn those pages for more. As much as I was horrified, I couldn't wait to see what they were going to do next. It certainly makes for some thrilling and chilling reading.
I thought this was a great case for Grace and her colleagues to be working on, Not only do we get to know more about Grace and her background, we are also taken on an exhilarating journey in the fight for justice. For me this was a perfect way to kick off a new crime series as usually the first book in a series is spent getting to know the character that it can detract from the overall story. This, I am pleased to say, is definitely not the case with Hush Hush.
Mel Sherratt has nailed it again with Hush Hush. It has left me very excited about what else she has in store for the reader. If you love a hard hitting, edge of you seat read, then look no further.

Grace is keeping it secret from her new colleagues that she is related to the infamous Steele family. When she is called out to a murder enquiry, to her dismay it is outside the Steele families gym and she comes face to face with her stepbrothers.
When more murders are committed and they all linked to the Steele family, Grace finds herself trying to prove to her colleagues that she is on the right side of the law unlike her step family.
I couldn’t put this book down. The back story of Grace is gripping and I can’t wait to read the next one in this series.
I cannot recommend this book enough. Definitely merits more than 5 stars!!

Hush Hush is the first book in a new detective series by Mel Sherratt and I just loved it! Already looking forward to book 2 in April 2019. The characters in this book just work and story had me wanting more from the very beginning. I have not read many books by the author and now I am wondering why. If you like this genre of book then I highly recommend this one.
DS Grace Allendale returns to her childhood home of Stoke for a fresh start and a promotion. She has suffered a great loss and hopes to start to move on in a new place. She has her work cut out with her new team who are loyal to their previous leader and her secret that she is related to the local crime family, although estranged. When her first case is that of a body in the car park of that families gym she is quickly thrown in the deep end and her loyalties are questioned by all but herself. The bodies keep coming and she is determined not to get sucked in by her so called family.
This book is a very fast read s you will want to keep turning the pages. Plenty of characters to dislike and others to rally behind. This book has it all. Thanks to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased

I had no idea, and still guessing to very near the end, and still not know what was happening.

Yên nào là tác phẩm đầu tiên tớ đọc và phải nói là tớ rất ấn tượng cả về nội dung lẫn cách triển khai mạch truyện của tác giả trong cuốn sách này.
Suỵt! Yên nào – tập truyện đầu tiên trong bộ truyện trinh thám của nhà văn người Anh Quốc Mel Sherratt với nhân vật chính là Sỹ quan điều tra Grace Allendale, lấy bối cảnh tại khu phố Stoke-on-Trent, thành phố nổi tiếng là nơi tồi tệ thứ 13 tại Anh vào năm 2007 với đầy rẫy những tội phạm, tệ nạn và một loạt các hoạt động của thế giới ngầm. 4.5 ⭐️ I’ve long been a fan of Mel Sherratt’s writing, she is such a versatile writer, and proves it by writing books in a wide range of genres whether it be a psychological thriller, crime fiction or suspense you are always guaranteed a cracking read. When I picked up Hush Hush the first book in a new crime series featuring DS Grace Allendale I was hoping she would incorporate her trade mark “grit lit” into the story, something this author does so well. I’m thrilled to report I personally think this is the author’s best book to date and had so many aspects that made Hush Hush such a gripping read.
DS Grace Allendale has recently returned to her home town of Stoke-on-Trent. Grace’s early years were spent living with a violent and abusive father, which ended when Grace’ s mother left him. Now he’s been murdered and Grace newly promoted feels able to return to the town she grew up in. On her return she finds herself investigating a murder, which is complicated by the fact The Steele’s a family who are well known for their criminal activities also happen to be Grace’s half brothers and sisters. As the old proverb goes “blood is thicker than water”, but there’s always an exception to any rule, which is certainly the case for Grace and the Steele family, loyalty is tested and conflict arises.
Grace like many fictional detectives has baggage, she’s a loner, she’s reserved but Grace is also a strong character, the brutal and disturbing chapters that describe her abusive childhood help the reader to understand the complexities of the “grown up” Grace. Alongside the investigation and on going problems with her family, she also has difficulty fitting in with her new team, they still miss their old boss Allie Shenton (featured in previous books by the author) and they also have trust issues which is hardly surprising considering who she is, but all these issues add to the overall tension.
Hush Hush is a solid start to this new crime series, with misdirection, suspense, and a dysfunctional family at its core this is undoubtedly a not to be missed crime thriller. There’s a gritty realism within the author’s books that some crime thrillers can lack, I found the chapters that delved into Graces past very disturbing and heartbreaking to say the least, but Mel Sherratt isn’t afraid to tackle uncomfortable subjects head on and in doing so has written a crime thriller that is a worthy addition to any crime thriller lovers bookshelf. Highly recommended.

4 stars and a bit, though I'm leaving at 4 round down...
Exactly what I needed at the moment. A bit of a thriller, but not too twisted, not too gory, yet clever enough. A bit of life drama, not going into sappy side. Interesting characters.
I call this "medium to well done" thriller :))
Grace is trying to get back on to her feet, after life knocked her down taking away her husband. He died from cancer just when they thought life was perfect and everything was in the right places.
To start afresh Grace dives into the full depth of her work. Being in police force is never easy but returning to your old town filled with horrible memories is a whole different story.
Graces father was abusive and she fled the town with her mother in hope to never return. He is dead now, but the fear hasn't gone away. Life plays her own tricks, doesn't it. Her father was murdered. And now there are more murders in town. Are they connected?
Is facing painful memories going to help to ease the pain from losing her husband?... is Grace the right person to work on those?
On top of all, Grace has half brothers and half sister, children her father had from another woman. No love lost between the two sides. To make sure they have nothing in common, the other half siblings are sitting firmly on the other side of the law and order.
It's going against half blood and trying to keep her colleagues' faith in her, that she is not like "them", she is honest and trust worthy.
I liked Grace, she is strong and smart, no superwoman, she has her weak moments, but who doesn't. Her story breaks your heart, you want nothing more than give her a hug and say: "It'll be ok, it'll get all better..."
The Steeles are a very believable bunch, you can feel the intimidation they ooze.
I have to say, Jade was an odd one and she never sat right with me, but that didn't spoil things.
I also liked the secondary characters. There weren't too many of them, when they all turn into a crowd and do nothing for the book. There were just enough and they created very lively environment in the station, and each of them had something to make them stick in your head.
The book is well paced and easy to read, I basically read it in two and a half days, I abandoned it after first few pages but when I got back to reading, I didn't want to put it down.
Will be waiting for the second book in the series (roll on, April 2019!!).
Might give a go to other books by this author.

Mel Sherratt is back in a big way with a new character in her latest Stoke-ont-the-Trent thirller, Hush Hush. And, I am here to tell you that Sherratt does not disappoint her readers. Sherratt is, IMHO, developing into quite an elite English thriller writer. I would put her very close to the ranks of Sharon Bolton and Angela Marsons. They all can write very similiar police procedural thriller styles. When Bolton is on her game, though, she is a tough comparison.
Allie Shenton has moved on to another position, an advancement that she couldn’t pass. Grace Allendale, a widow, originally from Stoke, but currently living in Manchester is hired to take her spot as DS. This does not sit well with all in the squad, what hiring from the outside when someone inside the squad already could have had the position. This is the first of two elements that DS Grace Allendale will have to weather out and prove otherwise. She is told by superiors to keep a secret from all others that she would just as soon reveal to her co-workers at start. She is a step sister to the Steele family, one of the most powerful families in the local crime underworld.
Still, life goes on and Grace gets her first murder case. And, it just so happens that their are very close connections to the Steele family and the murder. Soon, other murders begin to happen. Their seems to be some kind of connection with the murders, but nobody has the answers, neither the Steele family, nor the Stoke police. Grace, and her very affable side-kick Perry, work hard and long hours on the case. Sam does what she can with the CCTV and research in the office, and Alex … well, Alex is Alex, but he tries in his own way. DI Nick supervises the case and tries to keep Grace walking the rope staying on the case.
Grace and their crew begin to race at a rapid pace to solve the case as more bodies turn up. Is this an internal family struggle gone bad? Is this a family battle over turf or rites? Or is this just some really brave serial killer?
Hush Hush is an excellent police procedural/thriller that really bring to light broad advancements in Mel Sherratt’s writing. This is an excellent, fast paced read. I know many of my friends would enjoy this book immensely, and I would have no trouble at all recommending Hush Hush to readers of either of these genres. I simply loved it. I rarely give the 5-star rating, but this one is close, let us say, 4.75 stars.

I must admit, after reading all of the DS Allie Shenton books, I didn't think I would gell with DS Grace Allendale as much. I was wrong. Mel Sherratt has the ability to reel you in with her storylines, keeps you hooked and leaves you wanting more.
I can not wait until the next installment of DS Allendale and her team in April 2019.

Chi luôn có một niềm đam mê bất tận với dòng thriller, đặc biệt là #mysterythriller vì sức hấp dẫn của những trang viết ngập tràn bí ẩn và từng bước đi hồi hộp, và em này là một trong những cuốn mang đầy đủ những yếu tố khiến Chi mê mẩn ấy.
Đầu tiên Chi phải nói rằng cuốn này có một lượng twist cực dồi dào, twist sẽ luôn được tác giả cài cắm và bung ra đúng lúc người đọc đang thiếu cảnh giác, nên cảm giác đã lắm ấy. Từng chút một căng thẳng sẽ dần len lỏi vào câu chuyện, đẩy mạch truyện nhanh hơn hẳn, nhất là khi ta nhận ra rằng, hầu hết các nhân vật đều đang che giấu một điều gì đó.
Xuyên suốt cuốn sách, tác giả luôn giữ người đọc phải đoán, rằng ai mới là hung thủ, ai mới là kẻ dám ra tay ghê rợn với những tên chỉ nhìn thôi người ta cũng e ngại? Hệ thống nhân vật trong cuốn này không quá rộng, nên anh em sẽ không gặp khó khăn trong việc theo dõi đâu. Nhân vật nữ chính cũng được xây dựng rất nổi bật, không phải kiểu tóc vàng nóng bỏng xinh đẹp, mà là kiểu giỏi giang cứng cỏi độc lập ấy huhu.
Tớ rất thích cảm giác hồi hộp mà tác giả đem lại, trời ơi kiểu mấy hôm nằm nhà mà cứ căng mắt ra đọc đến tỉnh cả ngủ khi trời thì lạnh lạnh còn truyện thì cứ tí lại twist bung ra. Tớ cũng thích những đoạn tấn công được tác giả miêu tả, khá là nặng tay và máu me, nhưng càng làm tăng cảm giác phấn khích như đang xem phim hành động - tội phạm Mĩ đó.
Lần đầu đọc sách của Mel Sherratt mà cảm thấy bất ngờ vì hay quá và hơi tiếc vì bây giờ mới cầm em nó lên đọc 🤩 thôi muộn còn hơn không bao giờ 🥳
Chung lại thì em này là một cuốn đáng thử cho mùa Halloween đầy hồi hộp, nếu anh em nào sợ ma quỷ kinh dị nhá 🙌🏻 Review tập 2 sẽ được lên sóng trong vài hôm nữa nhaaa ❤️❤️❤️

Lần đầu đọc sách của Mel Sherratt mà cảm thấy bất ngờ vì hay quá và hơi tiếc vì bây giờ mới cầm em nó lên đọc 🤩 thôi muộn còn hơn không bao giờ 🥳
Chung lại thì em này là một cuốn đáng thử cho mùa Halloween đầy hồi hộp, nếu anh em nào sợ ma quỷ kinh dị nhá 🙌🏻 Review tập 2 sẽ được lên sóng trong vài hôm nữa nhaaa ❤️❤️❤️

I seriously can’t believe this is my first read by this author. Although I have some of her previous books I just have t had a chance. I’m so glad I read this as I’ll now be reading her others.
DS Grace Allendale has moved back to her home town. Along with working with a new team she has her first murder to investigate. All is not as it seems when the investigation leads her to her step family.
This is a well thought out storyline. Brilliant page turner with plenty of twists and turns. I absolutely loved it. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

Suỵt! Yên nào kể về hành trình phá án của Sỹ quan Điều tra Grace, trong một vụ khá khó nhằn xoay quanh những cái chết đầy tàn khốc khi những nạn nhân đều là nam giới khỏe mạnh, ngay khi cô vừa trở lại quê hương Stoke-on-Trent. Sẽ không quá phức tạp nếu như những manh mối của vụ án không dẫn Grace đến với gia đình Steele - những người cùng huyết thống mà Grace và mẹ đã cố trốn chạy và thoát khỏi khi còn nhỏ, nhưng đồng thời cũng khao khát được thấu hiểu và sẻ chia nhiều hơn với họ, bằng một sợi dây gắn kết vô cùng mong manh. Và từ đây, câu chuyện bắt đầu với những phút giây vừa hồi hộp vừa ngỡ ngàng, về những điều mà con người có thể gây ra cho chính đồng loại của mình.
Có lẽ nên nói về trải nghiệm đọc em sách này trước. Vừa lật những trang đầu thì em sách đã khiến mình bất ngờ với những pha bạo lực được mô tả chi tiết và đầy sống động, cứ như đang có một thước phim trải ra trước mắt mình ý. Và đó là cách cái chết đầu tiên được nhắc đến… Tiếp nối sau đó là liên tục những cái chết đầy bí ẩn khác, cùng những cú twist khiến mình không thể tin là tác giả có thể xây dựng tình tiết quá tài tình như vậy. Và đọc đến cuối thì phát hiện ra những suy đoán của mình đều sai hết cả, vừa ngỡ ngàng vừa khâm phục tác giả đỉnh quá.
Hệ thống các nhân vật không quá đồ sộ (đây là điều rất dễ chịu với một đứa ít khi nhớ tên các nhân vật như mình), đại khái là bạn có thể yên tâm đọc mà không cần khựng lại băn khoăn “ủa đây là ai?”. Và nhân vật nữ chính Grace là một hình mẫu mà mình siêu ngưỡng mộ ấy, không quá xinh đẹp hay tài năng nổi trội, Grace - với những ám ảnh từ quá khứ vẫn khiến cô run bần bật ở thì hiện tại - lại không chịu khuất phục mà chăm chỉ làm việc, mạnh mẽ trước thử thách và kiên trì tiến lên phía trước. Thầm nghĩ nếu mình có được một chút thôi sự mạnh mẽ, tự lập, cùng tư duy logic ấy thì tuyệt lắm nhỉ.
Điểm sáng chói của em sách này mà mình yêu thích hơn cả là sự đào sâu vào những ngóc ngách tâm lý của con người. Trước những vụ giết người tàn bạo, đâu là lý do ẩn khuất đằng sau? Càng đọc, mình càng ấn tượng vì sự sắc sảo của ngòi bút (lại một lần nữa khen tác giả): ấu dâm, bạo lực, tình dục, tham vọng, ham muốn… tất cả đều, bằng một cách vô tình hay cố ý, lại có ảnh hưởng lên tính cách của một người, khiến họ có những hành động vượt quá kiểm soát. Nếu đứng dưới góc độ của kẻ sát nhân, mình không biết rốt cuộc nên trách phạt hay thương cảm, vì những tổn thương trong quá khứ thật sự là vượt quá sức chịu đựng mà bất cứ ai trong chúng ta có thể gánh chịu. Và cuốn sách cũng khiến bạn suy nghĩ lại về ý nghĩa của “gia đình”, với sức ảnh hưởng của nó lên mỗi cá nhân.

Lý do mình chỉ cho em ý 4/5 sao là một vài chi tiết hơi bị gãy cụt và nhảy nhanh quá, nên có một số đoạn đọc hơi bị bơi một chút vì hơi gượng.

This is the first in an exciting new series. Mel known for her Estate series which isn't a hard hitting crime series but this one really hits you hard and fast.
Grace Allendale is a powerful woman who has returned back to her childhood home and believe me she isn't too happy about this or in life.
The conflict in this book really shows a diverse ability in writing as it isn't the utopian book where everything is smooth from the start. In fact Grace has to deal with a lot of emotions that are difficult as well as she has to try and earn the trust of her team.
This is the best book I have ever read by Mel Sherrratt. It had everything one could hope for in a book and really shows just what type of author she is.
I am really looking forward to more novels in this series. I feel that it will be one of my top reads.

I was over the moon to get an ARC of this book which is the first in a new crime series by one of my favourite authors. Grace has a very dark past and it's something which she knows she will have to face when she accepts a job as a D.S. in the town where she was brought up. She is also aware that she will have to tread carefully as she has connections to family who are far from squeaky clean.

I was thrilled to receive an ARC of Mel Sherrat’s first book in the new series Hush hush, as I have read several of her books and enjoyed all of them’
Grace Allendale has come back to home town of Stoke on Trent, to take up a promotion at the local police station as the new Detective Sergeant. There is a killer on the loose and at first, there is a bit of hostility between her new team, as the previous DS left big boots to fill.
Also being back in Stoke reminds her of her childhood, when she and her mother fled from her abusive father George Steele. The story goes back in time when her father became abusive towards her and locked her in the garage. He was murdered two years previously, but nobody found the killer. She feels alone, as her husband Matthew dies from Cancer two years ago and she hasn’t quite got over it.
The body of the first murder is found outside the Steele’s family Gym and subsequent murders after that seem to involve the Steele family. Grace has to investigate them but she doesn’t seem to be trusted by her peers as she is half-sister to the Steele’s but, as the investigation goes on, they realise that she part of the team and there to her job and catch the killer.
This is another captivating, suspenseful thriller from Mel Sherratt. I liked that it had a bit of Brit gangland rivalry thrown in. I think it’s a great first novel to I think is going to be another hit series.

Grace has to investigate them but she doesn’t seem to be trusted by her peers as she is half-sister to the Steele’s but, as the investigation goes on, they realise that she part of the team and there to her job and catch the killer.
This is another captivating, suspenseful thriller from Mel Sherratt. I liked that it had a bit of Brit gangland rivalry thrown in. I think it’s a great first novel to I think is going to be another hit series.

What a brilliant start to a new series.
I loved this book and all the characters are easy to connect with - and the Steeles easy to dislike!
Grace returns home to Stoke for a job opportunity and struggles to keep a family secret to herself.
It’s not long before she’s dealing with her first murder and has to interview the Steeles as it happened in their gym’s car park.
This is a gritty crime thriller and whilst I had my suspicions about who the killer was, I must admit I got it wrong.
It’s quite emotional reading about Grace’s childhood but I think it was needed to make the story feel more real.
I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

I was excited to start reading this after seeing fantastic reviews for it here and on Goodreads. The story was great, nice and twisty. But I found the characters somewhat disappointing overall in their consistency and immaturity. Maybe that will change as the series progresses. It felt more like they were presented that way to move the story along into another "twist." To be fair, I generally find books that are marketed as "psychological suspense thrillers" unfulfilling with their characters.

So, a new author for me and with a big stable of 11 books behind her I was pleased this was book 1 in a new series
Grace Allendale returns to her hometown of Stoke on Trent and murders start happening....she has a secret though....she is related to the biggest crime family in Stoke...the story then follows the police procedure re these killings ( and they are gruesome ) and the inevitable contact with her ‘family’, the wounds this opens and then the connection between her past and what is happening now becomes apparant...
Its a sad, brutal and harrowing story and one Grace cannot help but become emotionally involved with
The story occasionally goes back in time and as it progresses more and more of it makes sense
I enjoyed the descriptions of the Potteries ( Stoke on Trent etc ) and the authors obvious love for the area shone throughout the book
The characters and settings ( a ‘spit and sawdust’ gym etc ) are fairly standard for this genre although amazingly there was no nightclub ( I often think nightclubs only exist now in this genre of book but I digress )
Grace is a fairly complex character and her husband died a few years previous from cancer and this is mentioned frequently
The writing style is fine and the story flows fine, its all fine but in such a ‘hotly contested’ genre fine sometimes needs to be more!
At some points I thought I had read the book before, I hadnt!
The last quarter of the book ‘hotted up’ and was exciting
Wasnt bad!

Mel Sherratt has pulled another great series out of the hat. I loved DS Allie Shenton, so I was keen to read about DS Grace Allendale, the new detective on the block. When I say new... this lead character has roots in Stoke and family connections that rear up to greet her in the most terrifying way. DS Allendale has to choose - her team or her family. Where do her loyalties lie?
As with all Mel Sherratt books, you are guaranteed a gritty, heart stopping read. Nobody is safe in Hush Hush and it is up to Grace to find the killer before another victim falls foul. I raced through this book, my heart thumping as I tried to piece together the puzzle of a killer gone rogue. But just when I thought I knew the answer, another twist blind sided me. Fans of Martina Cole, Angela Marsons and Cara Hunter will love this book. An explosive read- Sherratt's best offering yet.

Hush Hush is the first book in the DS Grace Allendale series. Grace is the newest DS on the team when a murder spree occurs. Several people with ties to the infamous Steele's family have been murdered and Grace's team is on the case. What most people do not know is that Grace is a related to these criminals and when the news gets out, it could derail her career.
This is a well-plotted and paced police procedural. There are some graphic and brutal murder scenes in the book, but they are necessary for this story. It is up to Grace and her team to figure out who is targeting Steele's crew and friends. The characters were well developed and very different from one another. They made a great team, but there was suspicion when Grace's secret was revealed. She found herself proving her ability, her duty and her loyalty to the team. We also learn about Grace's past and how it affected her decisions for her future and career. I found this part of the story very emotional. The investigation was very interesting and well described. I was putting things together as the story progressed, too bad that the twists had me changing my mind many times. The conclusion of this one was great and I liked how it all came together in a realistic way. A great police procedural in a series that I am trying to catch up on. I definitely recommend this one.

I have read and enjoyed previous Mel Sherratt books and was excited to see a new series with a new character – welcome DS Grace Allendale.
Mel Sherratt has brought us another excellent British crime thriller which had me gripped so much so that I sat and read it in one sitting. I did find it to be very descriptive, brutal and chilling which may not be for everyone but the story is more than worth reading – just skim over the horrible bits!
A great police procedural. There is a strong family element to this story as DS Grace Allendale is related to the local crime family, the Steeles. This increases the tension throughout the book. I knew from the start it would be a good read - it was so much more!

Ok full disclosure here, I am a HUGE fan of…oatcakes and any book that features them is always going to be high on my wishlist! But if you don’t know this local delicacy then prepare yourself, because after reading Hush Hush you are going to be taking a road trip to Stoke on Trent to fill your belly! But that’s enough about the cities cuisine because there is SO much more to this book than hot oatcakes stuffed with melted cheese and crispy, salty bacon!! Mel Sherratt knows her city well and it comes alive perfectly here in this fantastically dark and gritty crime thriller, featuring her new detective DS Grace Allendale.
When Grace returns to her home city of Stoke on Trent, she returns with a secret not known by many-her connection to a local crime family. Having escaped with her mother from an violent father, Grace now has to face his other family when they become connected to a series of murders. Grace was a bit of a closed book to begin with but gradually her life away from Stoke on Trent, plus those 12 years spent there, is revealed so that we understand the decisions she makes whilst investigating her first case. It’s a disturbing crime scene that she is called to but the fact that the premises had a connection to her family makes this a difficult situation for her to cope with. But Grace was a surprisingly strong character with hidden depths and I loved following her as she sought the truth.
There was a great cast of supporting characters here, mostly new but with some familiar names popping up as well. But I felt that the city itself played a major part in my enjoyment of this shocking thriller. Mel Sherratts love and pride in her home town consistently shines throughout her narratives even when she is visiting the underbelly of her beloved Stoke. And I have to agree about Hanley being the heart of the city! But it’s a VERY long walk from the train station (especially in the dark-as I know from a rather stressful personal experience!!)
Mel Sherratt has delivered across the board here. Her first crime thriller for Avon is dark, gripping but also surprisingly touching. There’s such a strong loyalty to her setting and characters, whilst her trademark authenticity brings this book to life. I loved every single page!
