The Infinity Trials #3

Lost in the Shadows

Rate this book
In the shadows, you can even hide from yourself… When Jacqueline Talbot was in foster care, she often dreamed of being reunited with her father. Now she sees him every day, along with her long-dead mother. Together, they protect a world on the brink of collapse by fighting monsters from neighboring dimensions. Despite this harrowing existence, Jacqueline is actually happy. So happy, in fact, that she doesn’t realize she doesn’t belong here. Back in the real world, Mitzy Sarin and the Otakus face problems of their own. Not only are Jacqueline’s friends dealing with the fact that she’s up and disappeared, they also seem to each have developed awe-inspiring new talents. They’ll need them too, because in Jacqueline’s absence, reality is starting to fracture. More and more creatures are slipping through the cracks. Natural disasters abound. The only way to set the world right again is to get Jacqueline back home. But her friends need to act quickly, because the Nightwatch aren’t the only ones looking for her.

My name is Robert Duperre, and I live in the middle of Connecticut with my artist wife, who's far too good for me, and a rambunctious mutt of a dog. As a lover of romance, cosmic horror, fantasy, and science fiction, I'm a writer who can't seem to stick in any particular genre. The only true constant is that I write what I'd want to read.

I've published more than a dozen novels and two short story collections. Included in my work is the 4-book post-apocalyptic series The Rift, the 5-book urban fantasy series The Infinity Trials, and the 3-part dark fantasy series The Breaking World (written with David Dalglish), along with the one-shot science fiction novel Silas, among a few others.

I really don't know what happened to this series. It was always pretty strange but I enjoyed it's eccentricities and thought it was a pretty solid start to what could be a very interesting series. However, this entry just seems disjointed. It doesn't feel like it fits into the story seamlessly and I am left feeling like I missed a HUGE part of the narrative.

In the beginning of this one we are thrown into a world that we haven't seen before, meeting characters that shouldn't exist and seeing Jacqueline act completely out of her previously established character. There's really no other way to put it, it just doesn't feel like it fits and I was immediately thrown out of the world that was built and just didn't like this book at all. I honestly am not interested in continuing this series any longer because I just feel bamboozled.
