Rodman Wilson Paul was an American historian who taught at the California Institute of Technology. He was known primarily as a foremost authority on California mining and agricultural history.
p. 7 Horace Greeley “His very appearance and manner were so bizarre as to be unforgettable: a pink baby face fringed with throat whiskers, a squeaky voice, acute absentmindedness, illegible handwriting, and the careless costume that became his trademark—white overcoat and socks, shapeless trousers and crooked cravat, a broad-brimmed hat. Yet the readers of the highly influential newspaper that he created, the New York Tribune, followed his crusades and his sometimes eccentric enthusiasms with intense interest.”
This book provided a great overview of the expansion westward, particularly looking at California and Utah. I found the accounts of Utah's formation and growth particularly interesting. Reads like a textbook, so definately not a quick read but very informative.
