Two Mountains: Kilimanjaro to Quadriplegic and Back

Rate this book
An award winning essayist, S. Michael Scadron now offers his inspirational memoir, Two Kilimanjaro to Quadriplegic and Back—a remarkable, everyman story of inner strength, courage and willingness to endure—as well as the fond and funny moments that arise and comfort in the midst of fear. An avid runner and trekker, Michael suffered a rare neurological disorder that rendered him quadriplegic just weeks after he reached the summit of Kilimanjaro. Transformed from an active, vibrant 52-year old into a wheelchair-bound patient who needed assistance to feed, move, relieve and clean his body, Michael faced a strange new world. The story recounts his climb up Kilimanjaro and his unprecedented ascent to walk again.

Full disclosure — I’ve met the author (he’s an extremely nice man with an indomitable spirit) and consider his wife Terri a friend.

However, I truly recommend reading this book. It’s a Interesting story about the incredibly difficult and sudden turn in his life caused by an autoimmune disease doctors are still trying to figure out, CIPD. It attacks the peripheral nervous system.

The story describes the terrifying realization that initial therapies were not working and how he and the whole family adapted to the vibrantly active man becoming a quadriplegic within months. It was only through his and his wife Terri’s (whom I admire even more now) indomitable spirit, plus ruthless PT and OT regime, good doctors and perhaps a serious illness distracting his immune system that he’s been able to wrestle back his mobility.

Looking at it from an editorial standpoint, I originally found the back and forth between time frames distracting, but you get used to it and it flows smoothly. I absolutely love the constant theme throughout the book of comparing the amazing climb of Kilimanjaro they did shortly before he came down with the disease and his fight with CIPD (i.e., understanding slow and steady progress will get you to the top of the mountain)

Read it.

Two Kilimanjaro to Quadriplegic and Back is a powerful and deeply human memoir that pulls you in from the very first page. Michael Scadron turns an unimaginable ordeal into an inspiring testament of resilience, humor, and hope. His journey—from standing atop Kilimanjaro to suddenly losing every physical freedom, and then fighting his way back—reminds us how fragile life is and how strong the human spirit can be. Honest, emotional, and surprisingly uplifting, this book is not just a story of survival, but a celebration of courage and the will to rise again. A truly remarkable read.
