He couldn’t run anymore. He was just too tired. And the undead were getting closer. He wondered how long he could survive in the desert heat? His only hope for being found was a woman from halfway across the country and her uniquely talented dog, Murder. For Angie Graves, hunting the dead was nothing new. She’d hunted them from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the bayous of Houston. But this vast national park the size of Rhode Island? The task seemed impossible. The scents were vanishing. Could Murder find the undead in time? Could she trust her dog?

I live in Houston, but I was raised in Lubbock, Texas. I’m an animal writer. It doesn’t matter if the animals I write about are zombie-hunting dogs, dinosaurs, or giant kaiju monsters, I’m interested in that area where animals and humans intersect. I’m especially curious about the mind meld that happens with working animals. This is my point of view for examining human nature, and why I enjoy writing these books so much.

My site says I’m a writer and an explorer. My wife and I are “often” travelers. Thanks to my work, I sometimes get the opportunity to visit extraordinary people in out-of-the-way places. In recent years I’ve explored parts of the Navajo Nation, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and I did a mesmerizing 20-state roadtrip with my supportive family. I’ve been to all but four states in the United States.

I live with two awesome kids (though one is having her own adventures in college), one amazing wife, and two white German Shepherds. Thank you for stopping by, and please check out one of my books. (They are all available from Amazon as paperbacks and e-books.) Since mid-2019, I’ve been donating twenty percent of my proceeds to charity. If you want to see where I donate, I update my donations via my newsletter.

Disclaimer: I was sent a copy of this book by the author, Doug Goodman, for an honest review

Opinion:

“Trust your dog. Trust your dog. Trust your dog. But never trust a zombie.”

-Angie Graves, The Zombie Dog’s Handbook

These isn’t your regular zombie story.

It was in Colorado that Angie first came across a zombie when she was working on a case with one of her Cadaver Dogs, a dog that finds corpses. Nothing could have been more disturbing and grotesque to find that giant wasps had embedded themselves into the skulls of humans, in order to feed on other humans and reproduce. But after a dangerous search in the Colorado wildfires ended in the retrieval of a young girl, the services of Angie and her zombie tracking dog Murder are in high demand. With the outbreak of zombies in Harris county making Houston “Ground Zero”, Angie and her faithful dog are enlisted to help Harris County Wasp Control Unit in eradicating the threat. But a new group called the Missing Lone Stars who have come to Houston in order to help the zombie problem, succeed more in making a spectacle of it and Angie’s work. To make matters worse, a young park ranger frantically comes to Angie in need of dire assistance. He claims that a zombie is in the Big Bend National Park, though it seems impossible that one would have made it so far. But when a young hiker’s life is on the line in Big Bend, Angie makes the decision to change course. Now Angie must depend on Murder to find the trail to the zombies, and to a hopefully still alive hiker.

It has been a LONG while since I have had the immense pleasure of following Angie and Murder into the depths of zombie hell! But might I say you guys, it is GOOD to be back. Now let’s first begin with why I love this author, Doug Goodman, so much. I first read Cadaver Dog, book one in this series, back in 2015. So naturally, when I picked up Dead Dog and was about to begin my glorious descent into horror oblivion, I suddenly panicked at the thought that I may need a refresher of what happened! But to my wondrous surprise that included a loud “HAH!” from me, Doug did what no author I had read before or after him had done before.

He put the most beautifully, depressing and haunting dedication I have ever seen.

And then, he put in a recap of book one. Without having to even be asked.

Doug, you amazing man!

So since I was able to jump right into this story, let’s do the same! Our main characters are of course Angie and Murder. Angie has most of her experience in training dogs to find dead bodies, a skill she uses to help find missing people or to solve cases for the police. She is a saucy young woman who has a love for dogs, and a tolerance for her fellow people. Murder is a dog Angie had found abandoned and half dead on the side of the road, having gained his name by being almost eaten alive by a murder of crows. After one of Angie’s cases leads to the discovery of zombies, her services swiftly change and she begins training Murder to track zombies.

But these zombies, are so NOT your regular zombies! Sure. They walk around like gurgling drunk college students, and yes, they like to eat other people. BUT. These zombies are controlled by giant wasps that have attached themselves to the back of their skulls. These things use their giant stingers, insert them in the back of the head to control the body, and just have them walking around finding other humans to gnaw on! To make it slightly more disgusting, inserting those stingers is ALSO how they reproduce

I’ll let that sink in.

Go ahead and go vomit a little, I can wait.

Usually I would find myself a tad bored following characters into forests and foliage while they follow scents and tracks. But Dead Dog makes it impossible to get bored or lose interest. There is CONSTANT excitement, turmoil and danger around ever corner. I found myself in a constant state of anxiety while reading, because I was expecting a wasp stinger to come out of nowhere and attack someone’s face! Thankfully, I can report that a stinger to the face doesn’t happen…*gag*. But with a new adventure, comes new characters! A few saucy volunteers, some entertaining park rangers, and even a haughty woman hell-bent on ruining Angie’s career for no apparent reason! OH! Happy day. Our story really picks up when new main character, Tyler, arrives on Angie’s doorstep. Tyler is a young Park Ranger who thinks that zombies may have infiltrated the Big Bend National Park after stumbling upon a dog that was practically ripped apart. His character is quick and intuitive, and I find him to be a great match to work with Angie and Murder. He proves to be an extreme asset to their team when they go out searching for zombies in Big Bend, and he inspires some touching and special moments with our usually tough and closed-off Angie.

“The great big, blue, cloudless sky rained heat down on his isolated hell. He was ostracized by fate and nature’s cruel designs from the world. From technology. From his loved ones.”

But as always, the real gem of these stories by Doug Goodman is the writing. This author has a true knack for writing a detailed story that the reader feels almost trapped in, but ensures the reader won’t feel confused or overwhelmed in by too much wording. There is one chapter in particular that comes to mind, and it is when our lost hiker is stumbling through Big Bend. He has been lost for days, is being followed by zombies, and quite frankly having one hell of a mind trip. It isn’t a long chapter, just about two pages of hallucinations and sadness. But after I read it I put my book down, blew out a deep breath, and just said “well s**t”.

“By nightfall, he had crossed a desert of sand and stone. He stopped to pull a needle out of his boot, but found that it had impaled his toe. He was bleeding now. He hoped that didn’t attract coyotes, but more importantly, he wanted to drink his blood. It glistened like water. He knew it was a messed up idea. But there it was. Drink your own blood.”

I obviously can’t give much more away about this fantastic follow up to Cadaver Dog, even though I could probably go on about it for another three pages. I am honored to be able to read and review these books for Doug, and to be able to share his amazing work with readers. I can only hope that there is plenty more of his writing in the future, and I cannot wait to get my hands on book three in this series. I HIGHLY recommend you guys try this series out. Even if the genre isn’t for you, the writing will hook you and make you obsessed. Trust me. I know these things.

I am the author. I'm not going to give myself a bad review, but I do really like this book.

First, I respect and thank the people who have reviewed or will review this book. Please read their comments, and hopefully those comments will help you. So rather than give my own review, I thought I would do something different and add a little trivia for the book. I do have a general spoiler warning because I am talking about some of the characters, locations, and events in the book.

-This book was inspired by my encounter with a dead dog while I was on a walk at Christmas time.

-Also, my dog was getting older, and I was starting to think about what happens to dogs when they die and to the people they know. He has passed away since.

-An early scene where Angie and the other searchers are working through heavy brush was inspired by search training I have done in the Houston area. As most SAR volunteers know too well, the brush in the Houston area gets really thick, and the thorns can get nasty. Wild pigs are a dangerous nuisance and something every SAR worker is aware of if they come from that part of Texas.

-The winding drive to get to incident command was inspired by an actual search.

-The friction between teams is also partially inspired by teams in Houston. We are all big hearted people devoted to finding lost people, and sometimes our approach philosophies can cause us to have to reconsider our priorities, but everyone I have worked with has been very professional and focused. The part where a search is interrupted by untrained search and rescue volunteers on ATVs was also inspired by actual events.

-I got the idea for the construction company search because Mojo and I participated in several training sessions in a construction company’s lot.

-I decided to set the mystery in Big Bend National Park because I had recently camped a week in Big Bend National Park and fell in love with its solitude. I immediately envisioned a long, multi-day tracking a lost person throughout the enormous park. Some of the trails and areas I have visited, such as the Dagger Flats trail and Mule Ears, enter directly into the story. At Dagger Flats, there really is this giant forest of yucca, which gives off an alien landscape vibe. You should visit this park.

-There is a history of ghosts in the Big Bend area, and ghosts are associated with The Wild Hunt. The Wild Hunt is a European folk myth tradition involving a ghostly or supernatural group of huntsmen passing in wild pursuit. The hunters are often the dead, sometimes an unidentified spirit or lost soul. Seeing the Wild Hunt was thought to presage some catastrophe such as war or plague, or at best the death of the one who witnessed it.

-Some character names in the series are taken from Texas towns because I enjoy weekend trips through small Texas towns.

Dead Dog, the sequel to the fantastic Cadaver Dog, is a fast paced and exciting story. Continuing the story of Angie and Murder felt like catching up with old friends who I hadn’t heard from in awhile. I was cheering them on as they learned to navigate the murky political waters of Houston and still hunt zombies, rescue their victims and train a new volunteer teams to aid in the search. I really wanted to smack the publicity hungry leader of Missing Lone Stars in the head repeatedly as she tries to undermine Angie and Murder. When Angie & Murder meet up with Ranger Tyler McKinney to find a missing backpacker in Big Bend they find a mystery that kept me glued to the page. With its extremely satisfying conclusion Dead Dog left me hungry for more, I can’t wait until the next part of this phenomenal 5 star read.

This series is an addicting and different take on the zompoc genre. Fast-paced and both exciting and frustrating (Angie gets an obnoxious nemesis named Wendy) Dead Dog finds Angie and Murder working to find a missing hiker in Texas. She pairs with a young Park Ranger named Tyler to try and find a hoarde of zombies before they decimate the campers and hikers in the area.

A new twist to the zombie genre! Angie Graves and her dog Murder hunt zombies! Murder is a cadaver dog trained to hunt zombies and the wasps that control them, thus making him a “zombie dog.” Angie is haunted by recent events in her past, but she is tough as nails and nothing matters more to her than her dog. Murder learns to trust people more, and he becomes more finely honed in the tactics of hunting in this sequel to Cadaver Dog. Although this is a sequel, it can be read as a stand-alone.

The book is a page-turner and keeps the story going with strong character development. As Angie trains a group to search for a missing back-packer in Big Bend National Park, a rival group the Missing Lone Stars attempts to damage Angie’s reputation in order to garner publicity.

The heart of this book is the relationship and trust between Angie and Murder. The author is well versed in the tactics of cadaver dog training, dog psychology, and man’s relationship to his best friend (in this case her best friend). Murder wears his scars on the outside, while Angie hides her scars on the inside.

If you are into zombies and want something new, this is the book for you! I know I will be going back to the first book Cadaver Dog to see how things got started. Doug Goodman is definitely an author I will continue reading.

End of first book, only one of her dogs died, yet at the start of second all but one of her dogs lived. Really confused me going from one book to the next. I had to double check I wasn’t going insane.

The ‘wasps’ are changing or being controlled was a nice new element to the world. It keeps both you the reader on your toes and Angie. Plus I liked how Murder changed, he wasn’t the same dog in the first book, he had grown a bit into his confidence. That and it felt like he found his role in life. Toy chicken and finding Buzz.

(Over and Out is incorrect military use. You can only have one or the other, never both – Hollywood love to mess this up)

This book was good! Unlike book 1, the characters are being fleshed out and given personalities. Angie is making friends and Murder (the dog) is improving in his skills.

In this book, Angie meets a Texas Ranger named Tyler and they set off across the desert to find zombies and rescue humans. The protagonist in this book (at least for me) is not the zombies per se but rather Wendy, the leader of a so-called rescue group called The Lone Stars. The way that Angie takes this woman's guff is admirable but the kicker (and best part) is the way she handles her when she (Angie) gets fed up! :)

There is an attraction between Angie and Tyler but no sex scenes (yay)!

I loved the standoff between Diable (Tyler's horse) and Murder (Angie's dog). That was very well done. Kudos to the author!

This is a delightful story around a really new twist on zombies. It's well thought out and woven in contemporary life well enough that it's almost credible. That's hard to do with zombies. The depth of the manipulation sub-theme was crafted well and added to the intrigue. I particularly like the characterization of both Angie and Murder. Also, that applies to the romantic dusting with Tyler, not too much, just enough.
I recommend the book if one likes zombie stories or just a good mystery.

Four and one-half stars! I love Murder, the dog and highly recommend this series! It is an action-packed, extremely unusual zombie thriller with very relatable characters and excellent world building. It does need a bit of editing and if not for that I would have rated it with 5 stars. I already picked up the next book in The Zombie Dog series and am looking forward with great anticipation to reading it.

I really enjoy this series. I can relate to the main character; because of my back ground in search and rescue K9. This series combines 2 of my loves search work with dogs and a little paranormal. The author is really good at keep the dog training grounded in reality; which is very rare. The world building is great; the story line is wonderful. I am truly hoping this series goes beyond the 4 books currently out.

Just like his first book this one was just creepy enough to be realistic. The author has the pulse down on animal behavior and PTSD. The overboard reaction results in haunting ghosts. Sometimes it could be warranted but not in this case. The heroine needs to learn the hardest lesson of all, you can't control everything, you're not responsible for everything. The characters are well written and unlike some books it's hard to predict how things will go. I don't creep out easily and even found Stephen King's books not truly creepy. But these somehow get under my skin.

Something is not right!

Angie and Murder have been set up by the group run by Wendy. She agrees to help the ranger from Big Bend find a missing backpacker. What she finds instead is more surprising. Are the Zombies coordinating their attacks? Is someone using them? Can she save the backpackers with the help of Tyler, the ranger and Murder? A smooth read.

Interesting
If you can get past that pets die in terrible ways in this series (which is impossible for some people) this is a good read. The unique zombies are well done and the plot is good. Could use better proofreading, but so could I. Plot is getting even more convoluted at the conclusion of this one. I will continue.

The bugs are learning fast!

The zombie hornets are learning new tasks fast! People are even using them now to commit murder. How can Angie and Murder the dog show this is new bug behaviour or just old bad human behaviour! Great new zombie style!

Not your ordinary zombies

Definitely a great series for people who love stories with a new type of monster. If you think you have had enough of zombies you will be surprised by Murder and Angie's pursuit of these monsters.

Book Title: Dead Dog
Author: Doug Goodman
Format: Kindle
Genre: Fantasy

Book Title:
The title ' Dead Dog ' is mysterious as the fog in the previous book of the Zombie Dog Series fights against the attackers.

Book Cover:
The cover is a very interesting image of a beautiful landscape of a no man's land and a dog skull.

Plot:
Dead Dog, the sequel to the book, Cadaver Dog and is a fast paced and exciting story.
Angie Graves, the young woman, who trained Murder in the previous book, move to Houston after her house gets burned down in Colorado. She then joins the Harris County Wasp Control to search for zombies, at Houston. Houston is the main place of the zombie epidemic. But Angie finds it difficult to live in Houston as she is not used to live in a very busy place. She always loved living in the mountains with serene and peaceful surroundings. She tries very hard to adapt to the city life. The people, the mindsets, and the politics here at Houston suffocated Angie very much. Murder, her dog also starts behaving strange.
In the story, in a parallel scene, a dead dog is found in a desert canyon in Big Bend National Park, Texas. The Parks Ranger suspects there is more to this death than a simple case of a dead animal on the trail. He begins searching into what happened to this dog, and does it have an owner. His questions will lead him to Angie, and together they will begin a hunt for creatures more dangerous than bears and mountain lions

What I like:
1. The plot
2. Angie's struggle to adapt to new situation
3. The twists and the mystery solving episode

What I didn't like:
After reading the first part of the series, I have started liking the fantasy genre, so there nothing that I haven't liked in the story.
My final Verdict:
A definite read for fantasy genre lovers

Book Title: 3/5
Book Cover: 4/5
Plot: 4/5
Characters: 4/5
Narration: 4/5
Language & Grammar: 4/5

Final Rating: 4/5
