Sandhamn Murders #5

L'estate senza ritorno

Rate this book

This is book 5 in the Sandhamn Murders series, but it worked ok for me as a stand alone.. The murder takes place on Sandhamn island, located in the archipelago outside Stockholm, Sweden. I thought that it was a very good police procedural, with the police interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence and following clues. The police initially focus on one suspect, but there is more to the story and several twists and turns in the plot, before a satisfying ending, resolving all plot elements.
The lead investigator is Thomas Andreasson. I like the author's name choice.
I thought that the translation was excellent. There was only the 1 murder and very little violence, so cozy murder/police procedural fans would both enjoy this book.
Thanks to Amazon Crossing for sending me this eARC through NetGalley.

Enter the fifth book concerning crime on the isle of Sandhamn, starring Thomas the policeman and Nora. The TV show is for me and my far better half one of our favorites and they have a different vibe than the books except for the laidback character of the island life and the character of Nora.

The Midsummer celebrations on Sandhamn are notorious as many youths flock to the island to go into excessive use of alcohol. Nora & her new beau Jonas are on Sandhamn and his daughter also has permission to go out and celebrate and when she fails to return at the bespoken time the father is of course more than scared. He and Nora are trying to find the missing Daughter.
The police find a dead body of a young man who turns out to be murdered and thus Thomas second time father returns to the Island to find out what happened. His investigations does lead to a suspect but the case is far from solved.

A well written and yet laidback book that is about murder but is interesting and makes you feel on the island looking over the shoulders of Nora and Thomas at a situation that is interesting as a parent for me with adolescents celebrating and having yet finding their footing and identity in our world. Peer pressure and love can be so important and yet so easily go spectacular of the rails with all consequences.
As always well written and an easily enjoyed book, May Thomas and Nora enjoy many more outings. You can always watch the TV show on Netflix if you do not want to read, it is like the book well worth your time.

Another good Nordic police procedural in the Sandhamn Murder series. This is number 5, and revolves around the trouble well-to-do teenagers with too little attention from the adults in their lives get up to one Midsummer Holiday on Sweden's resort archipelago. I listened to the Audible version, narrated by Angela Case, and could not keep from wondering, throughout my listening about the lives of these characters, and how the tragedies of that one night changed them forever.

Laid-back, but with some more intense parts.

I've watched the series, and liked it a lot, but the books are so much better. You get to be really involved with Nora and Thomas, the way that think and feel. It's well written, precise and straight to the point.

This installment finds both Thomas and Nora on more solid footing as they adjust to the changes in their lives. Thomas has a new daughter, and Nora is dating someone and trying to figure out how to do the whole blended family thing.

And of course, there is a murder. A teen has been found day, and Thomas must help solve the case. Nora is only involved in the case in a slight way. Don't worry - she is still in the book.

Sten seems to capture the confusion and pressure on the teens quite well. The conflict that Nora feels over her relationship with Jonas is well done as well.

The mystery was pretty good too. The solution isn't easily guessed at but it doesn't come out of left field.

Another really enjoyable story by Viveca Sten.

Based around a murder committed at midsummer in the Stockholm archipelago, and told in both flashbacks and an ongoing narrative this is am intriguing police procedural. The characters and their backstories are interesting and believable, which leads to a very enjoyable read.

This was my second book in the series, and I am looking forward to reading more.

Oh how I wish all of the books in this solid Scandinavian murder mystery series were already available in English.....I could and would happily do nothing but binge my way through them, craving pastries and strong coffee all the while! I also wish I could give this installment 3.5 stars, because Ms Sten kept me guessing in one way or the other until the end. And then, of course, left me hanging regarding Our Nora's future. Surely she would not be so dumb as to....um, no, wait, that'd be a spoiler. :-)

In the Heat of the Moment, the fifth book in Viveca Sten’s Sandhamn Murders series, takes place at the Midsummer holiday. While Nora Linde and her new lover, Jonas Sköld, are quietly enjoying the holiday, Sandhamn’s nearby harbor area is overflowing with young revelers. The police have extra patrols in place, but it’s hard to keep up with the crowds.

“For some reason, it had become a tradition for young people from Stockholm to come over for Midsummer. They had just one goal: get as drunk as possible, either on a boat or elsewhere on the island.… Like a swarm of grasshoppers, invading the area one island at a time. This was the worst day of the year on Sandhamn.”

Jonas’s 14-year-old daughter Wilma is visiting from the mainland and she convinces a reluctant Jonas to let her join the party, with a strict curfew. But Wilma misses her curfew and doesn’t respond to texts or phone calls. When Jonas and Nora learn that several teenagers have gone missing and one has been found dead, they fear the worst.

Nora’s friend Thomas Andreasson, a detective inspector with the Nacka police, and his partner Margit Grankvist take control of the case, but they are confronted with a seemingly impossible task as they try to understand what happened and who is responsible. The holiday is over, and the few potential witnesses they can identify are leaving the island. What’s more, all the young people they talk to were either too drunk or high to remember anything, or they are willfully hiding the truth.

This is a fast-paced and suspenseful story structured with short chapters that keep the pages turning. Although the investigation that Thomas and his colleagues are pursuing takes center stage, Sten also weaves in a subsidiary narrative focusing on the challenges posed for Nora and Jonas’s new relationship by Wilma’s disappearance. I personally prefer the police investigation portions of the book, but Nora and Jonas add a human-interest dimension to the story that is also appealing.

Midsummer’s Eve is a wild night on Sandhamn. Visitors come from all the other islands to party and gave a good time. Mostly it’s young people, kids really, that arrive on boats and act outrageously – and get very drunk. Wilma, Jonas Skold’s fourteen-year old daughter is determined to take part in the celebrations. She wants to meet up with some friends and stealing two bottles of wine from the refrigerator, she begs her rather lenient father to stay out until 2 a.m. She has a major crush on one of the boys.

During the evening Wilma becomes very drunk and is separated from her friends. She wanders helplessly drunk around the beach looking for her friends. Meanwhile a couple of other girls in her group get lost as well. One is found by the police, the other come to the police liaison building looking for her friend. They are reunited. Nora Linde takes them in. Meanwhile Wilma has long missed her deadline for being home and Jonas and Nora are very worried.

A young boy’s body in found on the beach. He has been bludgeoned to death. He is Victor Ekengreen, another one of the group. Thomas Andreasson is called over to lead the murder investigation. His partner, Margit follows later.

When the interviews begin, the police strongly suspect Tobbe, Victor’s best friend. Slowly the truth is almost dragged out of the teenagers. When Wilma is finally found, Jonas waits almost three days to question her. She reluctantly tells her story. Jonas realizes that she may be a witness to what happened with Victor. He calls Thomas to report it.

This book takes the reader on many paths: the teenagers’ stories, teenage angst, competition, drug and alcohol abuse, lying to one’s parents, and the high price of revenge.

This is a good book. I have read all of Viveca Sten’s novels, and I like this one right up there with the others. Nora is a great character, as is Thomas. Ms. Sten’s books are well written, plotted and translated.
The island of Sandhamn sounds beautiful. I feel like I am on vacation every time I read one of Ms. Sten’s books.

I want to thank NetGalley and AmazonCrossing for forwarding to me a copy of this good book to read, enjoy and review.

Me voilà réconciliée.

When several teenagers go missing in a vacation town, with one eventually turning up dead, it’s up to Detective Thomas and his fellow police officers to piece together what happened. Viveca Sten crafts an interesting crime drama where the pieces don’t fall into place until the very end.

It took me about ten chapters until I felt truly pulled in (they’re short chapters) but once I was, I couldn’t put it down. The pacing was quick, switching from character to character and scene to scene, and I enjoyed the buildup to who was dead. A lot of authors don’t allow for that. This way you actually get to know the other characters and build a level of connection to them so when it’s revealed that their loved one is dead, there’s more weight and substance there.

I have one minor gripe and it may be more a pet peeve than anything negative. There are very few things, in real life and in books, that annoy me more than people jumping to conclusions. Watching the police and the victim’s father do just that, I couldn’t help but get a little detached from the story. I ultimately got my satisfying ending though so I didn’t let it bother me too much.

Overall an enjoyable summer read, and I have to give props to the translator as well. I don’t speak Swedish so I can’t compare the English to the original, but everything felt cohesive and of the same voice throughout the story.

Jonas, a divorced father, has custody of his 14 year old daughter for the Midsummer holiday. Apparently, all of the teens are partying, Daddy, she begs, and she gets him to agree to let her go out with a 1 AM curfew. But 1 AM passes, and Wilma does not return. Her phone is off, and her father is frantic. There are quite a few wealthy and seemingly very spoiled teens out, drinking, and partying, but everything changes when one is found dead the next day. Is it murder? Are drugs involved? Another great Nordic noir novel from Viveca Sten, excellently translated by Marlaine Delargy.

Yes! This is definitely what I wanted from this book, after giving the fourth book in this series 3 stars.

I rushed through this book and loved the different POVs and snippets of information you get while making your way through this book.

Such a fan of series where you follow certain characters and where reading previous books is rewarded.

Midsummer weekend on Sandhamn includes a lot of teenage partying. Jonas' daughter stays out past her curfew, and he spends the entire night searching for her. One girl loses the rest of her party and is finally joined by one in the shelter to wait until parents can come. But worst of all, one boy is found dead with a head wound caused by the repeated bashing of a stone against his head. The deceased's father vows revenge on the person who killed his son. Thomas and Margit investigate along with the help of other team members. The author seems to be using similar elements to previous books in this book. Unfortunately it makes the plot seem a little stale.
