Dark Shadows: Maggie & Quentin - The Lovers' Refrain

Rate this book
The Girl Beneath the Water by Lila Whelan

“If I don’t leave now something will try and stop me! Don’t you see what’s happening here? Something doesn’t want us to leave.”

As Maggie Collins welcomes her children home to Collinwood to celebrate her husband Quentin’s 65th birthday, she is blissfully unaware of the cruel magic at work underpinning the heartwarming scene.

In a battle for reality, Maggie and Quentin must come together to protect their children against an ancient magical force that knows no mercy. But in doing so, they risk losing everything they love. For who can be trusted when you can’t trust yourself?

The Sand That Speaks His Name by Mark Thomas Passmore

"'Abandon all hope, ye who enter here…’ Just the standard disclaimer - nothing to worry about."

A mistake from Quentin’s past casts a dark shadow over his and Maggie’s weekend getaway in New York City. A Golem is loose, threatening innocents and only Quentin knows how to stop it. But first, he must learn how and why the creature has come back to life, a task which takes Maggie and Quentin on a quest through the hidden supernatural network of the Big Apple.

Will Maggie’s foray into the perilous life Quentin used to live drive an irreparable wedge in their relationship? Will the rampaging Golem give them the chance to find out?

The Hollow Winds That Beckon by Cody Schell

“Ghosts. The seas are haunted. By the spirits of men – and women – who left land searching for something or other. A new land. Treasure. A new life. They keep searching.”

A sunny day of fishing is interrupted by dark clouds as Quentin and Maggie find themselves swept up in events beyond their understanding. They’ll do their best to escape a mysterious island, even if their failure means joining those who have failed before them - the ghosts on the waves.

The Paper to the Flame by Alan Flanagan

“Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet / She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet...”

When a group of Windcliff patients start chanting a centuries-old song, Maggie and Quentin investigate - and find themselves drawn to an abandoned town with haunted streets and a fire burning deep below. There they must face an enemy far stronger, and far more unhinged, than they could ever have imagined – one with a grudge that stretches into both their pasts, and will have a profound effect on both their futures...

The Girl Beneath The Water:
As Maggie and Quentin welcome their beloved children to celebrate their father's birthday. They soon discover there is a cruel magic at work and they must fight against an anicent force. But they risk losing everything they love and you can't trust nobody...

A solid opener to the set with some nice atmosphere and emotional scenes. The characters were very good with a great little story. 8.5/10

The Sand That Speaks His Name:
Quentin Collins and Maggie Evans arrive in New York for a good hoilday, but when a golem is on the loose, Quentin's past starts to catch up with him.

This was a good fun story, a bit of a run around I thought but good fun. Nice to hear more of Quentin's past, specifically in New York. 8/10

The Hollow Winds That Beckon:
After a peaceful trip out at sea, Maggie and Quentin are caught in a storm and soon washed up on an island where a mysterious ghost lurks and their only hope is with the woman who lives there. But soon their past as well, as their future is in danger.

This was a good story filled with plenty of references and nice character drama. 8/10

The Paper To The Flame:
When patients at Windcliffe start to chant an old song. Maggie and Quentin end up in an abandoned mining town with haunted streets and a fire burning deep below. They must together face an enemy and the past itself.

A great way to end the set! Wonderful character drama dealing with the past of Maggie Evans and Quentin Collins. Nice to see a couple of returning characters from both the audios and TV, and a great ending! 9/10

A solid set with thrilling and fun stories! The cast did a great job on this and the writers wrote really solid stories! Overall: 33.5/40

The Girl Beneath The Water: I like the idea of spirits stuck inside of paintings. I have always liked that theme and this one pulls it off well. The story was confusing at first because I couldn't figure out how Quentin and Maggie had kids that old (Maggie would be quite old even when they were born). The story played out well and I enjoyed it.

The Sand That Speaks His Name: I also love golems, and I liked this one a lot.

The Hollow Winds That Beckon: I enjoyed this yarn about being lost at sea with some supernatural being lying to them about the nature of her being.

The Paper To The Flame: I liked the end and all, but I felt this one dragged a little, but the ending made up for it. I liked all the connections to the past episodes of Dark Shadows.

Quentin and Maggie have the same relationship as Tony and Cassandra. Great adventures. A spirit keeps them trapped in a false married world with kids they don't remember. Then they run around NYC trying to stop a Golem. Next they land on an island that is haunted by a siren. The Last story has to do with both Maggie and Quentin's past.
