Clare is just a former high school nerd turned suburban mom. After being broken by her cheating ex, she’s not about to risk getting hurt again. But when former nerd runs into former cheerleader, Clare finds herself willing to gamble on a second chance at love. After all the bright lights and magazine covers, Mary is searching for a simpler life in her hometown. She didn’t expect to find middle-age butterflies and sweaty palms. A surprise reunion with the shy geek from high school gives her a chance to make the move she never did. The closer they grow, the more clear it is that they’re perfect for each other, but will Mary be able to break through Clare’s fear and self-doubt to show her she deserves a happily-ever-after?
This book had exactly two things going for it: it was a very quick read and it was free on Kindle Unlimited. Other than that, there is absolutely nothing else here warranting further interest. I read another review stating that the author typically writes m/m stories and suddenly much more of this book began to make sense--the repeated use of "asshole" which was for some reason supposed to read as endearing, several slips in the middle of a sentence where there are only female characters to the pronoun "he", and this interaction between the two main characters that could only be described as painfully awkward and forced. The names of the two main characters are Mary and Clare, and throughout the book there are also misspellings of their names as well. Anyhow, theirs is the relationship where I spent the book hoping that they wouldn't get together; it boggled my mind trying to figure out why Mary (no description other than "hot" and "gorgeous") was interested at all in Clare (no description, but she's playing the part of both the sarcastic as well as the "damaged" with quite a bit of snobbery thrown in.) There is awful dialogue, absolutely no conflict, unnecessary characters, and this all unveils exactly as you assume it will. Only read if absolutely nothing is available.
I’m not usually falling for some bi-moms who reconnect after not seeing each other in years, but it was adorable. The emotions were real- self doubt, distance, not facing issues, running away- ones we all deal with. Overall a good story.
Former wallflower and nerd Claire is now all grown up, with a kid, and a cheating ex. Who does she happen to run into on a play date? Former popular girl/cheerleader turned supermodel Mary. And the sparks? They fly!
This is a quick, adorable read that I totally fell in love with. Clare is hurt, damaged by her past and her breakup with her ex. She doesn’t trust and she doesn’t want to fall in love, maybe even doesn’t think she is worthy of love. And Mary is just figuring out a whole new life for herself and her kid. So, these two have great chemistry but so many doubts and fears to overcome. Plus, Clare is canonically bisexual– she actually uses the word “bisexual” to describe herself. Yay! Representation! Sure, there are some typos and that’s annoying, but I got pretty caught up in the story and was able to overlook the editing issues.
It made me laugh, made me cry, even got me a swooning, and did it all in the space of a single afternoon.
I feel I should given it more stars - cause the humour made me laugh out loud & the relationship between Clare & her son was excellent - but it's too short, and ends too quickly. I love Logan's stories but she needs to give them a chance to breathe & expand on the characters - a straight model suddenly is "bi-sexual." What's the story behind that?
This was pretty cute but I wish it was longer and had a deeper depth inside the characters. I couldn’t really feel or connect with them because they were so flat to me. Cute and funny though. It was ok.. nothing amazing. But this is H.L Logan so I wasn't expecting anything blown out of the water.
This book lacks the tenderness of a gay woman. I did enjoy the humor and wit of the narrative, but, in my experience, women don’t ogle or use vulgar terms when describing the physical attributes of their proposed loved one. They do, as the boys express it, make goo-goo eyes at each other.
The love making needed to be much sweeter...with tears of joy and relief. The guidance of an older gay woman would help the author.
I think I have more chemistry and rapport with my menstrual cup than the two characters have with each other in this awful story.
The plot made no sense, the characters were completely flat, and I don't buy the infatuation the beautiful and famous Mary has for Clare whose has about as much personality as a used tampon.
Two women who knew one another from school. One was a nerd and the other a cheerleader. Their lives went in different direction after they graduate. The story began 10 years later. Novel is somewhat an interesting and at time confusing read. Still, it is a fun read.
This was a very sweet story between Clare and Mary. Nerd and Model who shared one brief non-sexual moment in high school and unknowingly felt something for each other ever since. This was a nice romantic to the point love story that I read in a day... just wish it was longer. I also enjoyed the humor between them and their boys. Bravo to the author H.L. Hogan
Fantastic characters with great chemistry, wonderful, witty dialog, and a sweet, heartwarming romance about two women who shared an important moment in the past reconnecting with each other for a chance at something real. Highly recommended.
This story was adorable. A nice light read. Just the right amount of humor and a little bit of angst. I liked the dynamics with the two main characters as well as with their kids.
This is the first book I have read by this author. I liked the story, though I thought it dragged in places.
There are grammar and spelling errors that took away some of the pleasure of reading. If you're a grammar nerd like me, be aware before you start reading.
I'm doing genre research and this book was a bestseller. So disappointed. Zero substance, unbelievable and shallow characters. I won't be reading this author again. I don't give one star, lightly, however, this book is simply not well written.
Can anyone say girl crush? You marry. You have a kid. You fall out of love. Then in walks your first love who happens to be the opposite sex. Both Claire and Mary find themselves in the same dilemma. Read about their journey of self discovery and self worth.
I loved how the author took the time out to let us see how a budding relationship can turn into so much more. She handled the kids really well and tied it up into a neat bow. I think I will read some more books by this author.
Though short it’s a mighty tale of two women in a small town, high school acquaintances who meet again when one of them moves back to town and their sons become friends. Enjoy it
A romantic quick read for an afternoon. I really enjoyed reading about Clare and Mary. I’ve read several books by this author and I’ve enjoyed them all.
Like the story and the characters. They were funny, witty, real. Honestly I would love to continue knowing the characters a bit more. Need a second book of them.
An easy read that didn't exactly sweep me off my feet, but was what I needed for my reading slump. Wasn't a fan of how quickly it ended, but didn't mind the ending.
