Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God, for unto thee will I pray. – Psalm 5:2
This book is a comprehensive study on the subject of prayer, and will show you that there are nine elements which are essential to true prayer. These elements are as follows:
1. Adoration – We cannot meet God on a level at the start. We must approach him as one far beyond our reach or sight. 2. Confession – Sin must be put out of the way. We cannot have any communion with God while there is any disobedience between us. 3. Restitution – We have to make amends for the wrong, wherever possible. 4. Thanksgiving – We must be thankful for what God has done for us already. 5. Forgiveness – We must forgive others and pull any root of bitterness that might be growing. 6. Unity – Loving one another brings power in prayer. 7. Faith – There must be faith, which the preceding things produce. 8. Petition – Thus influenced by the other things, we will be ready to offer direct petition, or requests, to God. There needs to be more petition in our prayers. 9. Submission – After all these, there must come submission. While praying, we must be ready to accept the will of God.
Dwight Moody expounds on these nine elements in this volume, using illustrations and stories to validate what he is saying and to help make the truths in this book stick.
About the Author Dwight L. Moody, determined to make a fortune, arrived in Chicago and started selling shoes. But Christ found him and his energies were redirected into full-time ministry. And what a ministry it was. Today, Moody's name still graces a church, a mission, a college, and more. Moody loved God and men, and the power of a love like that impacts generations.
Dwight Lyman Moody was a predominant evangelist, author, and publisher. Raised on a farm in Massachusetts, he moved first to Boston, where he converted to evangelical Christianity in 1856, and then to Chicago, where he prospered in business. He gave up business in 1860 and engaged in missionary work with the YMCA (1861-73).
He founded Moody Church and preached in the slums, emphasizing literal interpretation of the Bible and the need to prepare for the Second Coming. In 1870 he teamed up with the hymn writer Ira D. Sankey (1840-1908), and they began a series of highly popular revival tours in Britain and the U.S. Moody founded the Northfield School (1879), the Mount Hermon School (1881), and the Chicago Bible Institute (1889; now the Moody Bible Institute).
This is a most powerful book on the power of prayer. It teaches the reader how to pray in the Holy Spirit and how to move the Hand of God. Of corse one of its' teaching is that we must channel our prayer int the fasion that is agreeable to God's Will for our lives. He teaches that the purpose of prayer is not to twist the Arm of God to have our own will, but rather to twist our hearts to want the Will of God. I highly recommend this to all believers and nonbelievers alike. Read and be blessed.
“The prayer of the humble and the contrite heart is a delight to God.” (3.5 stars)
D. L. Moody’s PREVAILING PRAYER is an engaging and worthwhile read, particularly for the mature Christian who desires a deeper understanding of the nature and practice of prayer. It’s not a light devotional or an introductory book on prayer; rather, it’s a thoughtful and sometimes challenging work that rewards those who bring spiritual depth and reflection to it.
The structure of the book is straightforward. Moody identifies nine elements essential to true prayer, and then dedicates a chapter to expanding on each one. This clear organization makes the text easy to follow, and the nine elements themselves form a helpful framework for understanding prayer in its fullness. The nine elements Moody identifies as essential to true prayer are: adoration, confession, restitution, thanksgiving, forgiveness, unity, faith, petition, and submission. Each chapter offers insight into these disciplines, often drawing from Scripture and from examples in Christian history.
One of the strongest chapters is the opening one, called “The Prayers of the Bible.” Here, Moody examines the Lord’s Prayer and explores patterns of prayer found throughout Scripture. He notes that in the Bible most public prayers are brief, while private prayers are often longer. An ironic reversal of what is often seen in modern Christian life. It’s a simple but striking observation.
Quotes: • “Ingratitude is about the hardest thing we have to meet with.” • “It is well to bear always in mind, that the object of faith is not the creature, but the Creator; not the instrument, but the Hand that wields it.” • “The voice of sin may be loud, but the voice of forgiveness is louder.” • “We may sing our hymns and psalms, and offer prayers, but they will be an abomination to God, unless we are willing to be thoroughly straightforward in our daily life.” • “Too often we knock at mercy’s door, and then run away, instead of waiting for an entrance and an answer.”
One of my few critiques is that Moody frequently references writers and figures from his own era, often without context. He assumes his readers will recognize them, but most modern readers will not. After a while, the continual references to obscure names and quotations can become a bit wearying. Many of these citations are also wrapped in the formal “thee” and “thou” language of the 18th and 19th centuries, which can make the reading feel somewhat distant or stilted today.
Nevertheless, despite these dated aspects, PREVAILING PRAYER remains a valuable and convicting work. It’s not ideal for someone who has only recently entered the Christian faith (you need a bit of spiritual depth and biblical grounding to fully appreciate it) but for the seasoned believer, it’s a book well worth engaging with. Moody’s call to earnest, continual prayer still resonates powerfully. A key theme throughout the text is the necessity of persistent prayer. Moody reinforces the biblical command to “pray without ceasing,” showing that all nine elements ultimately point toward that continual communion with God. Keep praying, keep praying.
First sentence: THOSE WHO HAVE LEFT the deepest impression on this sin-cursed earth have been men and women of prayer.
I enjoyed reading D.L. Moody's Prevailing Prayer. Prayer is one of those subjects that is always, always relevant for believers. Not all books on prayers are created equal, I've found. Prevailing Prayer is one of the good ones.
What I appreciated most about this one is how practical it is. Moody examined what the Bible had to say about prayer and showed readers how to apply what the Scripture teaches to their own prayers.
How practical is practical? Moody focused on nine elements that are essential to true prayer. These elements are: adoration, confession, restitution, thanksgiving, forgiveness, unity, faith, petition, submission. A few of these terms readers may be familiar with. But I'm guessing a few will be new to you. (I know they were new to me).
I’ve had this book on my TBR list for years, and finally read it. I’ve read three books on prayer this year, all good. This one is special because it was written in the 1800’s by Pastor D.L. Moody. Moody writes of many experiences with prayer, some personal. He gives us nine elements essential to prayer. He also gives us the Scripture that can be applied to our prayers. Although written hundreds of years ago, I it practical, a must read for all believers. I read the book as suggested, five or so pages allowing time to digest and retain it. I will read it again for sure.
Just because we ask for something in prayer doesn’t necessarily mean that we will get it. There are times that God says no. He knows what’s best for us, even if we don’t see it at the time.
This is the third time I've read Prevailing Prayer in the past 40 years. Moody, one of the world's greatest evangelists, was a man of prayer who won hundreds of thousands to the Lord. His style is direct and practical with many examples taken from the years of his ministry. I find his humble approach very encouraging.
Oh, that we would see men and women of his power, integrity, and humility again.
This is a classic work on prayer by one of the spiritual giants of the faith. DL Moody was the Billy Graham of... no, switch that. Billy Graham was the DL Moody of my parent's generation. The world is still waiting for the next. Or, as Moody quotes Henry Varley, "[Our generation] has yet to see what GOd will do with a man fully consecrated to him." DL Moody made it his life's goal to be that man for his generation and prayer was a key part of that.
This book might be a bit dated in places, but its core principles are as true for us as they were for their time. In each chapter, Moody looks at a different type of prayer like adoration, confession, thanksgiving, etc. It is pretty fundamental (not fundamentalist), but it is also those fundamentals that we seem to have lost in our own time.
A few nuggets: "If our sermons and messages are going to reach the hearts and consciences of the people, we must learn to spend a considerable amount of time in prayer to God, that there might be power with the words we deliver." -p9
"I do not fear pagan lectures half so much as the cold dead formalism in the professing church at the present time. One prayer meeting like the one the disciples had on the day of Pentecost would shake the whole nonbelieving fraternity." - p49
"Many people would be greatly surprised if God did answer their prayers." -p117
"Some people think God does not like to be troubled with our constant coming and asking. The only way to trouble GOd is not to come at all." -p118
In this book Moody writes of many experiences with prayer. But one theme he talks about throughout if we are not willing to follow God our prayers will most likely never be answered. He says it many way, “We seem to go toward God, but, indeed reflect upon ourselves” , “If we have no desire to do that will, how can we call God “Our Father”.” In another portion he says, “If we should pray for the coming of God’s kingdom while we are rebelling against Him, we are only seeking for our own condemnation.”
This book is short but chocked full of stories of prayer by common people that were answered.
This is not so much an instruction manual on prayer, but more like a record book, showing by several stories and Scriptures that it is powerful. In addition to the common elements of prayer, Moody calls to the reader's attention the importance of restitution, forgiveness, unity, submission, and more. Strongly recommended to anyone who wants to grow in prayer (every believer)!
I gleaned so much from this book. It was such a good reminder of the power of prayer. It helped me also really look at the idea of the importance of confession.
A very helpful and challenging book on the various aspects of prayer as outlined in Scripture. p85 '... the ear of the Lord Jesus is ever open to the cry of all who want mercy and fact. It is His office to help them. Their prayer is His delight... is not this encouragement?' p101 'when our prayers for earthly things are not answered, let us submit to the will of God, and know that it is all right.' This book is one to be revisited regularly. It is only 121 pages so does not take long to read and a chapter a day would only take 11 days and be a very helpful exercise.
This book is from Pastor Moody who was a Pastor in the 1800's. Dr. Lutzer has Pastor Moody's prayers and he made a book with them. As Dr. Lutzer suggests you should take your time in reading it, read about five pages at a time and soak it in, well it is true - what Pastor Moody had to say was so impressionable, and it is so life-changing. You can tell that he had the ear of GOD that is for sure - he touched so many lives with his sermons. Here is a little piece of what he said, "In the prayer of our LORD, in John 17 we find that HE made seven requests - one for HIMSELF, four for HIS disciples around HIM and two for the disciples of succeeding ages. Six times in that one prayer HE repeats that GOD had sent HIM." That is just a little snippet. He was truly Blessed by GOD in his sermons and I was Blessed reading, even changed by them. Please be cautioned here - your life could be changed as well. I received a copy of this book in exchanged for an honest review.
I wanted to really enjoy this book—being labeled a “Christian classic” has that effect. However, I found it a little dry and compared to other books on prayer I have read not as helpful or even more importantly moving one to a desire for prayer. It’s good but not great.
Depend upon it, prayer does not mean that I am to bring God down to my thoughts and my purposes, and bend His government according to my foolish, silly, and sometimes sinful notions. Prayer means that I am to be raised up into feeling, into unison and design with Him; that I am to enter into His counsel, and carry out His purpose fully.
Moody Publishing has brought this classic back and it is timely. What does prevailing prayer mean? It is prayer that is urgent and desperate for God. Prayer is not bringing God to submission to our will but our will to be submitted to His good purpose. A great reminder of the purpose of prayer. It is where we leave our burdens and gather strength.
I loved this quote...Prayer is hardly ever mentioned in the Bible alone; it is prayer and earnestness, prayer and watchfulness; prayer and thanksgiving. It is an instructive fact that throughout Scripture prayer is always linked with something else.
I appreciate the God focus of this short book on prayer. It is truly needed for all Christians.
A Special Thank You to Moody Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
I gave this book five stars for a few reasons. First of all, the updating of the language and the readability of the book along with the content make it a real page turner. I bought this book because I felt my prayer-list approach to prayer had grown stagnant. As with any relationship, I didn’t want my communication with the Lord to be anything like that. I longed for fervor to come to God and make my requests known but I didn’t want it to be like I was coming to him with a wish list. I wanted a full prayer life filled with praise, thanks and confession too. I wanted it to be real again and more than a list. (Not that a list isn’t useful). If you want to infuse your prayer life with passion for the things of God, I recommend this book. Moody’s example, his encouragement from Scripture, and stories of answered prayer are both uplifting and inspiring.

Moody's book on Prevailing Prayer reads more like a collection of sermons, written down verbatim as they were delivered. It was a semi-interesting read, and I appreciate the heart of Moody as he pleads (again I can hear the sermon) with the reader/hearer to abandon those things that hinder the prayer life.
Surprisingly there is very little scriptural support offered for the pleadings. Moody just assumes things to be true and states them emphatically. He will cite much anecdotal evidence and will quote or cite the opinions of other well-known preachers and theologians, but not much is pulled from the Bible itself.
I read the book just because it is D.L. Moody, but would I recommend it? Not really.
This is the first book I’ve read by the late, great D.L. Moody! I devoured it, taking copious notes on how to build godly character and integrity. From start to finish, Moody held me spellbound by his stories of faith and commitment. I could hear his clear voice and sense his heart. Here was a true person of faith; one fully consecrated to God! I will start another of his books now...I have been to school and have learned from one who took God at his word. He has challenged me in so many ways, such that my one-word focus in 2021 is “abide,” as to abide in Christ at all times! Read this book...and take your time in doing so. Like me, I pray you will be blessed and encouraged in your faith.
“We read that His disciples came to Him, and said, ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’ It is not recorded that he taught them how to preach. I have often said that I would rather know how to pray like Daniel than to preach like Gabriel.”
An encouraging and challenging book on prayer. Moody focuses his book on what he believes are the 9 most important features of prayer: adoration, confession, restitution, thanksgiving, forgiveness, unity, faith, petition, and submission. While a majority of these elements of prayer are featured in most books on prayer, Moody’s chapters on restitution, unity, and petition were especially unique and powerful. Even though there may not have been many note-worthy parts, the rest of the book still featured many valuable truths on a variety of different aspects of prayer. All in all, while this is a brief book, it’s a good primer for those who are new to prayer or for those who need some encouragement to push deeper into their prayer time with the Lord.
Prevailing Prayer has nuggets of gold strewn throughout. Moody outlines the various elements necessary for a healthy prayer life and clears up a number of misunderstandings about its role in the Christian walk.
One critique is that, while Scripture is cited throughout, he is heavily dependent on anecdotes for demonstrating some of his points. While these stories can be helpful and encouraging, they sometimes distract from the Scriptural element of the book.
I found that the chapter on Submission (the second last chapter in the book) really ties the whole work together. A helpful book on a crucial, but oft misunderstood and sorely neglected, aspect of the Christian life.
A devout look at believing prayer through the ministry of an American titan. This book is a compilation of sermons that covers key aspects of prayer through a biblical lens that is accompanied by several inspiring anecdotes.
The book is very accessible and provocative in the style of Moody's convicting proclamation. It caused me to deepen my dedication to pray more. I recommend this work to those who already believe in the power of prayer but want to be challenged to grow in this most critical area of our spiritual formation.
My soul needed the convictions that came from this book. Highly recommend. "I firmly believe that the Church of God will have to confess her own sins, before there can be any great work of grace. There must be a deeper work among God’s believing people. I sometimes think it is about time to give up preaching to the ungodly, and preach to those who profess to be Christians. If we had a higher standard of life in the Church of God, there would be thousands more flocking into the Kingdom."
