I saw this on a Facebook kindle book ad, and it sounded entertaining and a nice break from what I've been reading recently, so I picked it up and read through it in an evening. It was fun, though uneven in some parts, as noted below.
Loved the worldbuilding, especially the work put in discussing the country's current economic situation and how the new ruler would like to improve it. This wasn't done preachily or as an infodump, it was very natural and I really liked the attention to detail that made this feel like a real place.
Characterization was really spotty. The main two characters were pretty well done, but the rest were really uneven. The main bad guy was particularly badly done - he had no real motive, and went from zero to "I want to wear your skin" with pretty much no reason. Now, that's not to say there aren't crazy vindictive men out there (especially in America), and many of his actions were chillingly real and plausible, but for a story I want to see more of a motivation or at least an explanation (he had a secret room about the heroine, I don't know, something). It made the threat from his direction seem cartoonish as well as horrifyingly real, which isn't a great combo. I'm also iffy on the character of the male lead's brother, as there was ZERO motivation or explanation for what he did, and frankly the story would've been better if he'd died and left the hero the heir than what was done instead. Loved the hero's mother and her interactions, although I am surprised she was so gentle on the commoner heroine.
Definitely a hefty dose of crazysauce, but hey that's what was on the tin so I'm not complaining. I could've done with more luxury porn, given that we have a honest to god king on our hands. The sex scenes were present and okay, not terribly explicit, and the first one was the best and was definitely creative. I wonder if the first one-night-stand is where the story started, as a short story, and then it developed from there?
Worldbuilding - 5 stars
Main characters - 4 stars
Supporting characters - 2 stars
Plot - 3 stars
Overall - 3.5 stars
I'm going to round up to 4 stars because I enjoyed the hell out of this. I might look up more books by the author, and I hope she improves because she's got a great start and just needs to work on better integration of disparate elements to really become excellent.
