Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.

Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.

Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.

According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.

Enid Blyton holds a very special place in my heart – she may be a little out of favour now, but I am largely a reader because of her books. With Christmas around the corner, I'm pleased to receive this collection of thirty stories with a Winter theme. The back of the book shows where all the stories were previously published and they range from those first published in 1930 to 1959.

Listened to in audio format.

This was a delightful set of 30 short stories based around winter time. Like with all Enid Blyton stories she instills good values in children such as listening to your elders, sharing and the perils of being greedy.

Like most short story collections I enjoyed some than others. My favourite stories were
The sparrow children
A peep into the magic mirror
I dare you to
The hungry little robin
Mr Pink Whistle comes along
She could never remember
The Winter Wide awakes
Is there anything particular you want?
Happy New Year
Mr Pink Whistle and the twins.

I've been reading a lot of Blyton recently, no idea why.

I've mixed feelings on a lot of her writing. It's all a bit saccharine at times, and some of the stories are absurdly didactic and moralistic, often in ways that are just....odd.

For example-it wasn't in this story collection, but in another, but one story by her that I read was about a little girl who said she hated parties since she was scared of them.

This girl, somehow, ends up at a christmas party and ends up having a great time. When she gets home she's like "Oh, mummy, I love parties! I was such a coward!!!! if only I hadnt be so frightened!" and I just have to wonder why were A: Ignoring the fact that some kids may simply be introverted and B: Are shaming them by calling them cowards.

But there's also bits of these that are rather charming as well. I've been reading a lot of children's fantasy this year, and so I'm enjoying some of these despite all this.

Also, whilst you cannot judge a book by its cover credit where credit is due to the cover artist for this- I'm a huge fan of Quentin Blake's illustrations and this is so close to his art style I genuinely thought he HAD drawn it at first.

I'm not sure if this collection wasn't as good or whether I've just read too many Enid Blyton books in a row and got tired of them but by the end of this one I was getting thoroughly fed up.

There were some things I really loved - having winter tales that weren't Christmas related being one. Another was coming across Mr Meddle again, a character I adored as a child. And a few of the stories were absolutely wonderful.

But on the flip side, her short stories can be extremely judgemental and moralistic to the point that makes it look tiny things are huge. In both good and bad ways. If you do a tiny bad thing is the worst thing ever, if you do a tiny good thing you will get an amazingly big reward.

Another thing was the repetitiveness. There were two stories where an animal prevented a bulgarly and two where children wanted to see a pantomine and ended up with free tickets for helping one of the actors.

I'm glad children's literally isn't this preachy anymore although Enid Blyton's stories will always have a special place in my heart.

I've just finished this delightful collection of short stories by Enid Blyton. This is obviously a seasonal read so I prioritised getting this one done early on in the year so that I'm reading it at the right time.

I'm not a lover of short stories as a general rule but these are really sweet. There's 30 stories and as they are for children the length of each story is just right. Filled with humble stories about nature and magic it's a really cosy read.

The last story happened to be my favourite about a little boy called Jack who makes bird houses for his neighbours to feed the birds through winter and earn money to buy his mum a present ... Lovely. That's the sort of cute stories we are talking about. There's lots of woodland creatures, snow, robins ... All the wonderful things that make winter beautiful.

Enid Blyton is a legendary author obviously and this collection is really wholesome and warm, great reading this by the fire. 🔥

Sweet nostalgia and it's good to see old Enid is evidently finding a new audience after undergoing a C21st tidying. The usual array of a mix of fairytales and nature stories and featuring some perennial favourites such as Mr Pink-Whistle, a character I first encountered in second year infants back in primary school. Happy days.

It's interesting coming to Blyton as an adult and realising the ease with which she clearly wrote. Whilst she may not be producing brilliant sentences, there's something to admire in the tidy structuring of stories that can easily come in under a thousand words and still deliver. One thing that this latest collection proves is that one is never to old for Enid Blyton.

I think this book was entertaining to read. Some of the short stories were interesting, while others seemed kind of odd or weird. I would recommend reading this book though because it is fun and entertaining. All ages and genders would enjoy this book. It's good to snuggle up with because the stories are wintery, but don't avoid reading this in the summer. There isn't really anything to do with the holidays (except New Year's), but I think all of the stories take place with snow outside. I think anyone would enjoy reading this book, and I would read a book by Enid Blyton again.

It’s very dated but I quite liked that these were stories grandparents might have read as children. My favourite was Old Father Time And His Pattern Book. A lot of no nonsense parenting which provoked lots of discussion. Plus, the chapters were really short, ideal for bedtime reading.

I really liked this book. Full of lovely short stories with really well created characters.

Enid Blyton has a way with words. These books are magical and enchanting. They not only have important themes throughout them they are also relatable.

I adored Enid Blyton's books when I was younger and I loved this book. I really enjoy short stories because you can read at least a whole story in a one sitting.

This book is great for adults and children alike and I love reading stories like this to my Nieces and nephews.
