A final showdown between good and evil looms in a hidden world of deception and depravity. Josiah Hawke and Tom Carmody are called back into action to track down the daughter of a prominent Texas judge. She's among a stagecoach full of passengers kidnapped during a robbery and secreted in a virtually inaccessible outlaw hideout deep in a canyon that is thought to harbor such evil that even the Comanches and Apaches shun it. The Canyon of the Long Shadows is a vast subterranean expanse, a virtual metropolis run and populated by a network of criminals. Hawke and Carmody call on veterans of their old Civil War units to lead a daring rescue raid— but encounter danger on all sides when they learn that the judge who hired them is also at the center of a web of corruption and violence. Another exciting western adventure with Hawke & Carmody. Five clapping stars!
Carl Dane's vivid descriptions, witty dialogue, suspenseful plots and non-stop western action had me holding my breath and laughing at the same time--no easy feat! As usual, I relished every minute of Hawke and Carmody's adventure in the Canyon of the Long Shadows as they battled nefarious villains in clever, totally unexpected ways. (Where did the author learn so much about fighting skills?)
The best part of this series is the quirky relationship between Hawke and Carmody, who always manage to come to each other's rescue when things get rough. For such big, tough guys, their interactions can be quite touching at times (though I'm sure they would loudly deny it). I hope we get to enjoy many more of their exciting adventures!
This is book #2 in the series even though there is a short story in between. Hawke is the Marshall of a small TX town and Carmody is his deputy. Elmira, Hawke's sometime girlfriend, owns the bar and brothel. Read book #1 in the series for the details of all that. It will not disappoint. All the excitement in this one starts when a sort of judge is thrown in jail when he is caught accepting a bribe. This lands Hawke in a heap of trouble and his one option is to go on a suicide mission to save the daughter of a real judge. There is a lot more going on than meets the eye at first glance. She has been kidnapped and being kept at a well guarded outlaw camp. The real motive, however, isn't ransom. The real reason is to kill Hawke. Who set this up and for what purpose. These are questions that require answers. Another excellent read by this author.
I really enjoy these Hawke & Carmody stories. I am not a huge fan of westerns, but when a cowboy book gets humor added to it, well by golly, I'm going to read it and enjoy it. Mr. Dane, I do wish you would make your editor actually read your books. I find too many typos that were the result of spellcheck seeing a word spelled correctly, but not having the good sense that the word does not fit in that sentence. As a former newspaper publisher and editor, I am sensitive to finding typos that could have easily been prevented had someone actually read the book. But that small matter won't prevent me from reading more of your books!
Once again, a very entertaining western for me. Almost non stop action from start to finish. Carl Dane, the books author did what I needed him to do. He gave me something I could get into from start to finish. Sometimes I need to get away from our planes, trains and automobiles world and go back to the days of horses as your prime mode of travel (either horseback or horse and buggy). And to go there from my recliner here in my living room is just awesome. Thanks to the author for allowing me to come along on this journey.
I was looking forward to this latest installment of the Hawke and Carmody series, and was not disappointed. It's a terrific read. To say there's a lot of action is an understatement -- it has one of the longest and most compelling gunfight scenes I've ever read -- but the characterization is just superb.
I'm a fan of Westerns and narrate many for Audible and I think this series is up there with the best of the genre.
Talented writer, but the lack of proofreading kind of drives me crazy. I still liked it though, and will read the next one. There’s not a lot of substance but I like the characters and it’s easy, relaxing, reading.
Good old western...need more said? Lots of action and strategizing about fights and fighting. Decent plot. This is a good series for some good escapism
