Murray Newton Rothbard was an influential American historian, natural law theorist and economist of the Austrian School who helped define modern libertarianism. Rothbard took the Austrian School's emphasis on spontaneous order and condemnation of central planning to an individualist anarchist conclusion, which he termed "anarcho-capitalism".

In the 1970s, he assisted Charles Koch and Ed Crane to found the Cato Institute as libertarian think tank.

There are a lot of flaws in this book, more than I could list in a short review. The biggest of course is while he hates Bretton Woods and USD as the Universal Money Standard, making the Gold Standard a world wide currency is repugnant and would unduly hurt non gold producing countries. It is important to note he is not talking about America going to the gold standard, but everyone going to it.
That is the key. After reading Rothbard for a while you realize that libertarianism is really no different than liberalism or communism -- no national borders, one currency throughout, a godless one world society. This is failed idea.

In this essay, Rothbard makes a good case for returning to gold and a standard/incomplete case for banishing fractional reserve banking (FRB).
At times he is brilliant, at times he is stubborn and dogmatic.

Brilliant: demolition of the floating exchange rate fantasy, the concept of dollar as weight, the gradual dismantling of the gold coin standard

Stubborn: the FRB-as-fraud examples, the goldsmith warehouse myth (see Selgin), the blindness to free market credit instruments circulating, and the fallacy of stating that, as any given money supply will suffice for the performance of indirect exchange, then any changes in that supply may be disregarded as having no effects that could be mitigated (even if not through centralized policies)

Not bad, a bit better than "What Has Government Done to Our Money," in the sense of it goes over less well-trodden territory. I've seen the two paired together as one volume so it would probably be better to get that version than them separately.

Goes a lot into free banking, and how deposits and notes shouldn't be counted as separate entities but one and the same.

Short and to the point but I am sceptical whether the case for 100% gold-backed currency is either feasible or practical these days given the greater utility gold has in the modern world since this pamphlet was written.

The Case For A 100 Percent Gold Dollar advocates for the establishment of free market banking where market forces determine the supply of money through the use of a commodity, and it is supported by full reserve banking rather than a government edict invoking monopolized fiat paper money and fractional reserve banking.
Money is integral to modern economies, for it is the foundation of modern civilization. Without money, society would never advance beyond a primitive economy, and it can only created by the free market over time. However, when government controls the money by its creation, it essentially controls society because new money is created for the benefit of government and its favored factions at the expense of producers. Consequently, the private sector is starved of resources and capital due to theft from inflation and the loss of purchasing power in savings, which means less investment.
Fractional reserve banking is legalized fraud enforced by government because it artificially creates money out of thin air through issuing credit by banking accounts and not physical currency. However, full reserve banking assures the protection of property rights because money is only borrowed as to what is in the stock of available physical credit, and all deposits must be covered by 100% reserves.
Overall, Rothbard offers a concise and convincing argument for the abolition of fiat paper money and the reestablishment of the gold standard. He clearly explains the previous gold standard as a complete failure and offers how it could be corrected. Fiat paper money and fractional reserve banking ultimately leads to its own destruction, and it shows with every recession and depression.

Very concise, clear, and readable overview of the concept of money. Rothbard convincingly elucidates the benefits of a gold standard and to a lesser degree the elimination of fractional reserve banking. However, he dodges answering the very important question of how to actually implement a 100% gold dollar and what the economic implications would be for deflating the dollar value or inflating the gold price to bring the value of each supply into parity. The practicality or even possibility of implementation is central to evaluating its net benefit, and this book only gives about two pages to the issue. Very disappointing.
