The locks are failing.
The keys are calling.
The Titans are waking.

Crowned before her time, nineteen-year-old Natylia is thrust into an unpleasant reality—her people don’t want her, her family doesn’t need her and, despite her best efforts, she can’t seem to shake an incorrigible suitor. But when rumors begin to swirl throughout her kingdom the young queen shifts her focus and realizes that the world she loves could be destroyed in an instant.

An ancient enemy, long thought gone, is trying to return.

First things first. Have you ever read a slow-paced fantasy novel with a focus more on the main character's growth and emotions? Because, before Imber, I honestly hadn't. Throughout most of the story, Imber's focused more on the emotional side of things than the adventure and plot. The uniqueness of it is something I absolutely lived for throughout my entire reading experience.

You're pulled into Natylia's POV and see her struggles, her emotions, her dreams and hopes. You experience how she grows from start to finish. Not to mention the social anxiety she struggles with! A princess who's bound to attend social events at numerous occasions and struggles with social anxiety! One point to diversity! Also, she's afraid of heights. Now there is something that had my skin crawling since I struggle with the same thing. The way Natylia experiences heights felt a bit too familiar and I actually found myself shivering while reading.
But that's not all. One of the side characters, a witch called Meryn, is queer. On top of that, all our characters talk about queer relationships as if it's the most natural thing in the world because.. well.. in their world it is! Imagine my twinkling eyes upon making that discovery!

I had always wanted a storybook adventure and now that I was living one I wished the story would return to the pages.

Apart from Meryn, we also have Jyn and Camion. And this is where things.. are shout-worthy in the least. Jyn and Nat's relationship? Totally platonic, people. He's her bodyguard and there's simply friendship there. Nothing else. They're close, very close but it never progresses into anything more than that. Do we ever see that? I can't even remember the last time I saw a platonic relationship like this one.
Adding that this doesn't automatically mean there's no romantic aspect to be found though - just saying.

Not only the content of the story did the trick though. The writing was beautiful as well. Descriptive, but not over the top so. Just the right combination of describing things and still managing to be "straight-forward".

I lit the candle beside me and tried to read, to lose myself in the words that floated in front of me. There was safety in books, warmth and predictability in the character's lives and worlds.

I'm putting this at the end, simply because it isn't something "good", but it isn't a bad thing either. It's more.. a personal issue due to my pregnancy? Which equals having a disastrous attention span and memory. I'm pretty sure this affected my reading at times because I had a hard time envisioning surroundings, even though they were described properly and beautifully. I'm not even blaming the book for this because I know it's my pregnancy brain getting the better of me.

4.5 / 5!

Definitely a book worth reading if you like slower paced fantasy novels with a character-focused style instead of a plot-focused one! And I'll be keeping my eyes out for the sequel - that's for sure. I even went as far as ordering a physical copy of Imber because.. well.. this author deserves all the support she can get!

I love a good fantasy (who doesn't!?) and a journey/quest storyline, and OH MY does Imber deliver.

description

Imber is a wonderful debut and such a strong start to the Thanatos series. The writing flows really well and kept up a good pace throughout, making equal time for action but also for descriptions of the land and the worldbuilding! The worldbuilding was so well done; it is interesting and mysterious. The story hinges around the mythology of the world so it's obviously necessary that it be fleshed out and fully detailed: it certainly was, and it never felt like a dump of information.

Now: the characters! The characters were probably my favorite part of this book. They're so believable and overwhelmingly likable. Natylia, the main character, is smart and capable while still being sometimes unsure. It made for an incredibly "real" character. The supporting cast was also very strong, with complex emotions and relationships to each other. There is also one of the purest, most adorable romances I've ever read!

description

I would've loved to see more of Meryn, a supporting character who is sincere, clever nature witch, but hopefully she'll be in book 2 even more! And while there are a few typos and grammatical errors, they are far and few between and don't impact readability of enjoyment at all!

All in all, Imber is great fantasy read and I can't wait for the second book to come out!

Move over, Legolas, because Jyn is in town! Seriously though, read the book for the snarky elf comments. Read as he snarks his way through tragedy, mayhem, and adventures full of pitfalls and big scary creatures. Oh, and he's not the main character, by the way. He just happens to be a scene-stealer. Silly elf.

The story had me hooked right from the first few pages. The characters were so amazing and felt so real. I’m just so sad that this book is finished. I may have to re-read it! I absolutely loved the story, from the friendship between Natylia and Jyn to the slowly realized romance between Natylia and Camion. I was rooting for them from the time Camion was introduced.

Please tell me I can start reading the next instalment in this amazing story soon! I can’t wait!

Imber has it all: adventure, heartbreak, vivid characters, and a swoon-worthy romance. Not to mention the writing is beautiful.

I was sent an ARC of Imber by the author, Tyffany Hackett, who knows that I typically enjoy YA Fantasy reads. This book now sits on my shelf next to my other fantasy favorites, like Sarah J. Maas and Scott Westerfeld. If you're looking for a sweet, fun, and gripping fantasy adventure story, this book is for you.

The story follows Natylia, a girl who takes her mother's throne prematurely and without much explanation to her people leaving her in suspicions. She is a likeable main character who just wants to do her best by her people and her family. I really enjoyed following her journey to prove herself to her people, which takes her on an adventure through beast-infested forests, zombie-filled graveyards, and other terrifying scenarios. One thing that really stood out to me was the clear and realistic depiction of anxiety in Natylia. I loved how Hackett showed Nat's struggle with anxiety in social situations and while on the adventure, but how she can still be a charming and powerful leader. It was a really positive representation of a common mental health issue that we don't see represented nearly enough in these types of books.

Hackett's side characters are what truly makes this book shine. Meryn is a quirky witch, who is both silly and so wise. Lucian is the human equivalent of an eye roll, and I loved to hate him. Jyn was by far my favorite, the overbearing but hilarious bodyguard and best friend of Natylia. It's impossible not to love him!

Camion is a close second for me. As a love interest, he defects from many of the typical male characters we tend to see in YA books lately. He is consistently kind, even-tempered, and obviously cares a great deal for Natylia. This is honestly THE healthiest romance I've ever read in a book, and I quickly came to love Camion. The romance is extremely well-written, giving you just enough to ship the hell out of it, but not overshadowing the main plot in any way. If you're picky about romance, I definitely recommend trying this book!

All in all, this is a wonderful debut novel from Hackett, and I truly look forward to reading more of her work. She has beautiful writing and storytelling, building a world and characters that I can't wait to learn more about in future novels.

Possible cons: very PG rated violence if you were looking for something more, uncomplicated politics, short action scenes, and some typos here and there.

Read this book if you want: beautiful writing style, relateable & likeable characters, healthy relationships between friends and partners, adventure, a vivid world, positive representation of mental illness, diverse characters, and your heart to be low-key ripped out.

19-year-old Natylia is about to ascend the throne of Thrais after petitioning the Council to let her take over for her sick mother who may not live the five years until Natylia is supposed to take over. Unfortunately, the people of Thrais think Natylia is stealing the throne from her mother, their beloved Queen - and they're not happy about it.

When Natylia overhears her mother and Kathryn, the Queen of Wydus talking about mysterious scepters that have the ability to awaken and control Titans long thought gone and her mother is murdered mere days later, Natylia knows she has to find the scepter hidden somewhere within Thrais to save her people - even as accusations and unrest from subjects intensify.

After her mother's funeral, Natylia leaves the palace aided by her elven guard, Jyn, the palace witch, Meryn, and a blacksmith/Natylia's sparring teacher, Camion to enter the dark and forbidding forest where they believe the scepter is hidden.

Natylia will have to be strong and rely on her friends as she faces the dangers ahead if they have any hope of surviving their adventure...

This book is a definite must-read. I loved the characters and as mentioned before, the plotting, world building, and pacing are well-developed keeping the reader hooked on the story. I liked the slow-burn romance between Natylia and Camion, even though in the beginning I was sure Jyn had feelings for Natylia himself. The romance didn't overwhelm the story, it was just enough and I hope it's delved into a little more in the next book now that we know how Natylia and Camion feel about each other. I do foresee Lucian causing grief in books to come however...

I liked how this book ended, giving you a reprieve while at the same time setting up nicely for the next book and making you want to see what's going to happen next. Will Natylia find the next scepter before someone else does? Who are the Cloaked Shadows working for and why? Are the King and Queen of Kalum involved or is someone just making it look like they are? What if Natylia's true enemy is disguising themselves as an ally? So many questions and I can't wait to find out more in the next book!

Overall, I highly recommend Imber. It's a fantastic debut novel. You'll love the characters and quickly become addicted to the story. Natylia reminded me slightly of Aurora in Roar by Cora Carmack, (a girl who felt unprepared to take over her kingdom who goes on a grand adventure). Fantasy lovers will also fall in love with the world of Araenna!

Where do I begin with this review.

Imber made me feel like I was reading Harry Potter at times. The creatures, forest, and character dynamic gave me those same descriptive imagery and joyfulness that Harry Potter brought me.
Tyffany’s writing is delicate, musical, and each syllable flows. Sometimes I even felt like I was in a temple in a Zelda game with the adventure that unfolds in Imber. Some parts of the book really hit me deep. The man chained, the funeral, and Nat’s turmoil. I actually liked how it wasn’t too intense and graphic like GOT. Tyffany brings a balance between a PG adventure book, but satisfies those YA romance cravings (without being grotesque *cough cough* ACOFAS). Speaking of SJM books, I loved the reference to the ACOTAR series on page 49. I know that series holds a special place in Tyffany’s heart and it made me smile so much! Even if I’m not as much of a diehard fan of ACOTAR myself. Let’s get to the characters.

So I actually picked out candle scents for Nat, Camion, Jyn, and Meryn. I can’t wait to make them sometime.
Nat is an amazing protagonist. I hope she stays her badass self and doesn’t lose it in coming books. I really identified with her at some points. I kept forgetting how young she is. She acts beyond her age, but it was so fitting with the story.
Camion is a charming, patient, and almost...delicate? I don’t know. I love that he isn’t controlling, doesn’t act like a horny teenager, and also doesn’t try to “be the bigger man” he’s just Cam. He really grew on me by the end of the book!
Jyn. OH MAH LORD JYN. He’s my book husband. Seriously. I never thought I’d love an Elvish boy, but oh mah gawd. Mmm that temper 😍. I was rooting for Nat and Jyn so hard in the beginning. I’m kind of okay how things are turning out, EXCEPT I WANT A NOVELLA OF JYN AND HIS LIFE!
Last but not least, Meryn. I wish we had a little more of her. I hope we get more “girlfriend” time with Nat and Meryn in the future. Let’s be honest, no one would have survived getting the scepter if it wasn’t for Meryn. She puts the team on her back!

I told y’all this would be long.

Now, toward the end of the book I did get A LITTLE bored, but no lie as soon as I started to feel that way page 336 came (a little romance) and I was sucked right back in. Imber reads at such a balance. I love it.

My favorite quote guys,
“I undid my braid and let my hair fall free, a cascade of ebony that splayed across the surface of the water.” I could imagine every piece of that perfectly. So many times these amazing descriptions took place on the pages of Imber. At times the writing took my breath.

I could say so much more, but then this review would become its own book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ DUH!
Happy release day to Imber!

Imber is book 1 in the Thanatos Trilogy and is a Young Adult/New Adult High/Epic Fantasy novel.

Book Cover: 4* - The cover is really cool. I thought it was pretty atmospheric. I wasn't sure what the cover was depicting originally, until I read the book and now I know. The cover helps give you an idea what the protagonist will be traveling to, which is a pretty thrilling place I tell ya.

Summary/Tagline: 5* - The locks are failing. The Keys are calling. The Titans are waking. I thought this was an awesome tagline for this book. I'd put it up there with my other fave book taglines lol. As for the summary, I was hooked and super thrilled to read this book, which is what I want a book to do for me and it got me reeeeeally curious to learn what transpires with the protagonist and these awesome sounding friends of her's.

Characters: 4* - This book solely follows 1 protagonist, Queen Natylia. She is a nineteen year old young woman who's decided to burden herself by taking the throne from her sick mother. Although well meaning too, the people of her city don't think so, and her mother even acts pretty distant with her. She even goes through some pretty rough anxiety when it comes to standing and addressing a large crowd of people, she's headstrong, persistent(whether that's a good or bad thing will depend on the reader), caring, and resourceful I think, but she does keep her thoughts and feelings bottled up, and I feel like that's going to bite her really badly and REALLY soon. Out of her supporting characters/friends, we have Jyn, the Asian elven bodyguard, Meryn, the sapphic elemental witch/sorceress, and Camion, the caring and sassy blacksmith I think lol. Let's start with Jyn, I thought he was like the best friend ANY person can have and one that I want lol. He's strong, agile, and super caring for his Queen, but although I think he worries TOO much about Natylia, I do get it. I also wish there was an actual confirmation that Jyn is in fact Asian, because I wasn't aware until I've seen Jyn's aesthetics boards made by the author. Next up we have Meryn. She's funny and just outright resourceful and studious. I feel like if I want to have a good time and a drinking buddy, she's probably the perfect person to do that with, plus she knows freaking magic, like almost all forms, but she only practices elemental. Lastly, we have Camion. He's another one who's really fun and funny to be around. He's a skilled blacksmith and fighter and just as caring as Jyn when it comes to Natylia, and the poor man has dealt with an abusive family since he was a child, but doesn't act like a d*** and uses that as an excuse to be a jerk. Which is SO a plus lol. Natylia has a great group of friends backing her that they are more than willing to travel to a dangerous place to find something she hopes will save her country. How many friends do you think can do the same lol. There are other characters in this book, some aren't bad, and one I didn't trust since he decided to use a slur against Jyn, and I was right not to trust him.

World Building: 5* - This is probably my favorite thing about this book. Not only do we follow a Princess who becomes Queen, a young Queen at that, we actually SEE Natylia being taught the way of ruling, trades, custom, etc. Do you know how many books starring royal characters/heirs where we actually see them being trained to rule or just learn something about the land they live in? Barely any, and although Natylia's teachings are pretty brief, it was SO enough to satiate my curiosity about Araenna, which is the country Natylia now rules. We also get to learn about religions, Araenna's customs and ceremonies, and some different kinds of magic in this world that didn't at all sound over drawn out and not at all vague. I loved reading every bit of information that was thrown my way and I can't wait to read more.

Story: 4* - As I said in characters, we follow Natylia being prepared for her crowning by her mother who can't figure out whether or not to be proud or disappointed with her daughter, and Tyli notices this. After a successful crowning, she can't help but notice some rabblery with the people of the city, which she found unsettling, but not as bad as noticing a hooded man revealing a concealed dagger under his cloak to her. Come Natylia's ball that night, an attempt was made on her life, but it was thwarted by her bodyguard Jyn. You figured after that, everything would be fine and her mother would take that assassination attempt seriously, but it seems Natylia's mother is more worried about making sure Tyli finds a suitor to marry and aid in ruling with her. Unfortunately for Natylia, things start to slowly get worse. Now, although I enjoyed the story and found it thrilling, I thought the story was slower in pace than what I was expecting. I'm not saying the story is dull and I'm not saying the story has to be super fast, some things just took longer to happen that's all. The story did pick up for me about halfway in to the story, when Natylia decides that she must enter the forest by her castle in order to search for a Imber key said to control 1 of 4 Titans that wish for the demise of human kind. With information like that, yeah I wouldn't want the wrong people to have that either.

Over All: 4* - Although the story was a little slower paced than what I was expecting, it did pick up for me and I was thrilled from that point to the end of the book. I also loved the main core of characters and would love to live in this world. I'm not kidding, how can I get to Araenna lol. Oh! Before I forget, even though I say New Adult, the content within is about as on par as a Young Adult book, but follows characters over the age of 19 years old. So in my opinion, this book is perfect for New Adult readers that want to read somewhat softer/light content that follows characters their age and that doesn't at all dive into any of that older/adult explicity. Anyway, with how the book ended, I'm looking forward to finding out what's going to happen to Natylia after unfortunately disobeying her council by leaving the castle after what just happened to her and her family. The last thing I want is for the people to win and get her removed, and I SO don't want her to have to experience any extreme punishment, not to mention she needs to find the keys to make it so that the Titans never awaken. I have so much to worry about and I can't wait to read what happens next!

IMBER BY TYFFANY HACKETT SPOILER FREE REVIEW!

*I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for a free and honest review*

Let's kick this off by saying, simply, WOW. This book got a well deserved 5 out of 5 stars from me. My favourite genre is and has always been fantasy, which means, as someone who thus reads a lot of it, it now takes a lot more work to grab my attention when reading fantasy. But this book did it. It was a high fantasy adventure full of action and anticipation and excitement. I truly loved every moment of my time reading this book and CAN'T WAIT for more in the Thanatos Series.

The world building was phenomenal throughout this book. In fact, it was probably one of my favourite parts of the story (besides, you know, the whole epicness of the story!). I felt I could really see the world around me. It was as though I was actually in the story. It was truly fantastic and so well done.

In addition to that, the writing was excellent. It was engaging and fast paced, without being over the top with flourishes or description. It meant that the story flowed so well, making reading it both easy and addictive. I honestly never wanted to stop reading. I was constantly telling myself "just one more chapter... then I'll get some sleep before work..." so yes, this book had me hooked.

The characters were so well explored and developed throughout the book. I truly felt as though I'd come to know these characters as if they were real. I loved learning from them, and about them. They made the story fun and emotional and, well, lets just say, I'm completely attached to them.

So, I think it's safe to say, I am obsessed. A fantastic start to the series and a great debut novel! I look forward to seeing where the rest of this story will take me! If  only I didn't have to wait for the next one!!

LONGER SPOILER FREE REVIEW:

To start off with, the author was incredibly kind and sent me a copy of the ebook for free to read and review. As a result, it has ended up being one of the best things to ever happen to me. Not only has this book made it onto my favourite books of 2018 list, but I've already ordered a physical copy and have cleared out a special spot for it on my favourites shelf! If that's not proof of how much I ADORED this novel, then I don't know what is.

I didn't really know what to expect when going into this story. Besides seeing references to it being similar to Throne of Glass, Lord of the Rings and even Dungeons and Dragons, I had no real knowledge of what this book would be about. And I actually think that made it all the more enjoyable because I honestly did not know what was going to happen whatsoever. I was constantly finding myself shocked by the plot twists, on the edge of my seat during the intense scenes, and welling up throughout the emotional moments. It takes a lot in a story to have me completely in the dark - I'm usually pretty good at figuring plots out, but with Imber it was unpredictable and unforgettable, and I loved every moment of it.

The characters were fantastic. Enough back story was given to draw you in, while at the same time keeping you wondering about other aspects that I'm sure will be further explored throughout the next two books. Each character was well developed and I felt I could connect with our four main characters easily as I continued to watch them grow and learn throughout the book. In addition, our lead character deals with Anxiety and Panic Attacks, something I myself struggle with, so I really appreciated not only the accuracy of how the author displayed and represented her characters struggles with mental health, but how I was able to relate further with the lead. The author simply does that wonderful a job at writing her characters that by the end of the book, I felt as though I had truly come to know them as if they were real.

The world building was absolutely beautiful. I honestly can't describe it any other way. I actually felt like I was there, seeing it with my own eyes. I was constantly being caught up in the story, and finding myself completely lost in the world because the author does that wonderful a job at describing everything without it being overwhelming. In addition, the authors writing is truly spectacular. Tyffany has a real talent for writing because her book read like someone who has been an author for many, many years. Her talent is clear, and I cannot speak highly enough for how fantastic her writing style is.

I think what I loved most was, besides the world, but the political aspect of it. Learning about the kingdoms, and then about the possible threat rising up against them, was both fascinating and addictive. I was so drawn in by it all, and the way the author described it wasn't over the top or "info dumpy".

We also learnt about different kinds of magic in this world. One specifically related to our lead character, which is yet to be fully explored, but I'm sure it will be in future books. The fact that we were learning about this magic alongside the characters made it all the more personal and, thus, continued to draw the reader in as if they were a part of the story. What we did see of the magic had me intrigued and excited. I have so many questions that I can't wait to have answered in book two and three!

I honestly can't wait for the next books in this series. I love love loved this book and am so desperate to find out what happens next. The adventure throughout the second half of the book was so thrilling and had a Tomb Raider vibe about it that I absolutely loved. Let's be real here - I just loved everything. EVERYTHING. So, yes, I 100% recommend this book to anyone and everyone. But if you're looking for specifics, then I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of fantasy, especially high fantasy, or who is a fan of good storytelling, relatable and likable characters, wonderful worldbuilding and a great balance of adventure and political games. When I say fantasy, it's not overwhelming fantasy either, even though I would still consider it high fantasy along the lines of books like The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Even if you weren't a huge fantasy fan you would probably enjoy this, I think. So go out and get a copy and READ IT BECAUSE YOU WON'T REGRET IT. I PROMISE.

So, I reread this just to be sure about my review. Honestly, I scream a lot and by now all people who read my reviews should know. I simply cannot contain myself. So...let's juts say this is going to be semi-screamy review. If that makes sense. Also, beware of spilled tea and trails of salt.

Let's dive in, shall we?

I AM IN LOVE. Imber is such a wonderful and impressive start to a trilogy and yep, it has become one of my favorites. I said it.
The people who know me personally, will probably be shocked by this because I am so horribly harsh on YA and NA books. I dislike the heroines, the friends, the behavior- most things. But Imber didn't make me roll my eyes even once. Except for the fact that people should stop touching things (read it and you'll know what I am on about)!!!!
The main character Natylia was what I wish many YA heroines were. She's relatable. Natylia has her strengths and weaknesses. She has her flaws, her anxiety, determination and a fierceness that is not over the top and blatantly in your face to a point where it becomes annoying (Yes, I'm looking at all the brash Ya girls who do some very SMH things that are borderline ridiculous and selfish because they need to prove girls are just as badass as guys. I'm all for it, but don't be stupid about it.) Natylia acknowledges when she does somethin wrong, apologizes and tries to do better. And that is something I miss in a lot of other books, so I am delighted to see it happening here. All this made Natylia a very realistic character.

She has the support of an amazing group of friends. You can't help but love them. Her personal guard and one of her best friends, Jyn, is another character we see quite often and let me tell you, he's so absolutely precious. I loved seeing the strong bond between Natylia and him and yes, I am fiercely protective of him. I decided to adopt him. Yep, did that. He's my favorite, not gonna lie.

Also, a certain Andimir kept getting mentioned and he somehow became my favorite too even though we only get to meet him later in the trilogy. I'm a mess.

Can I please have these people as my friends too?
I don't ask that often because I usually either don't like the main character or find the friends just bland or annoying. Or both are horrible people. I absolutely loved Natylia and her supportive crew of friends. I'm starting to repeat myself. Let's move on.

Anyway, not gonna say too much but I love the world, the mythology (I'm an absolute sucker for mythology- real and fictional) and I can't wait to see how it goes on. (Ha, I'll be writing my Tellus review right after this but pssst.)
The only flaw for me was the slower paced first half of the book where we get introduced to everyone and the world. The second half was filled with action, adventure and moments that made me scream and sit up in bed getting all worked up about possible bad things that could happen.
Though, I would say, the slow beginning is a necessary evil to introduce the world. And honestly, even though there weren't many things happening plot-wise, that is not the part that bothered me. I still enjoyed learning about the world and characters immensely. For some reason I just personally found the very detailed description of all of Natylia's fancy clothes a bit too long sometimes. In my head, it all turned into a mess of jewelry and fabric. I'm not sure what was happening to me in those moments but I must also admit that I just came out of a long reading slump and the only books I read before that had the maximum description of color and kind of clothing (e.g.: wore a yellow suit with a red-dotted tie) so the descriptions obviously threw me off.
I'm still confused why it bothered me so much but there you have it.

Honestly, I absolutely recommend it and think this series should be much more popular. It would definitely deserve the hype that- in my opinion- other popular YA absolutely don't. That's my tea.

Read it! Meet these wonderful characters! Scream with me every time someone touches something and join the Club of Furious Cookie-Bakers!

(All cookies go to precious beans like Jyn. He gets all the cookies. I'm sorry for everyone else, but you gotta make the precious-meter burst before you get some baked goods.)

"They didn’t owe me anything. I owed them the world, and if I could find a way, the word they would have..."

Tyffany Hackett contacted me late April and asked if I would like to read her book in exchange for an honest review. As she was part of Jenna Moreci’s Street Team for TSC - and an all-round lovely human being! - I said yes without hesitation. I even forgot to ask what Imber was about. Thankfully, she had me covered. Once I read the blurb I knew I HAD to read the book.

Imber is about nineteen-year-old Natylia who is crowned as Queen after an untimely and gruesome death. After facing the fact that her people detest her and simultaneously expect her to marry a right pain in the ass of a man, she goes out on a quest to find the one thing that could save her nation: three scepters that serve to unleash a true evil. This evil seeks to destroy everything good in the world, and if not dealt with immediately, it will succeed. Joined by a loveable, mother-hen elf, a blacksmith completely out of his field and a knowledgeable nature witch, Natylia attempts to find the rumoured scepter that could control her future.

I have to say that I haven’t read a book I enjoyed so much since reading The Savior’s Champion by Jenna Moreci.

Tyffany’s writing is so smooth, clear, beautiful and easy to read. Imber could very well be a longer version of a Sunday read, if not for all the intense fight scenes. The scenes were described fluently and vividly, I can’t compare her writing style to another author, her voice is so clear and original. And, in a way, the writing is poetic. Take, for example, these sections:

“Clusters of tiny, delicate rainbow orbs sparkled happily where they clung to my curtain of night black hair.”

And…

“The chair was beautiful, cherry wood with a high back topped by an exceptionally detailed carving of a gryphon. The sculpted beast glared down and the plum cushion on the seat below.”

Every scene was so rich with description and yet I never felt bogged down with the detail.

Tyffany rewrote the tale of elves and made them completely her own. These aren’t your typical elves, Jyn has golden skin and wields a sword like a master, whereas the traditional elves tend to be pale - almost translucent - gentle beings.

But it was the descriptive emotions that truly drew me in. While some adverbs, filter words and redundant phrases were scattered throughout, it was easy to focus on the story rather than my editor brain.

This is one example of a descriptive emotion quote that I love:

“I could see the deep movements of his chest, the ripple of unsteady breaths he fought to calm.”

You can almost see the look on the character’s face, how his hands clench and unclench, perhaps his teeth even grind. They are angry but attempting to fight for some semblance of calm.

Next is plot. Imber has a very strong story arc. Which I attempt to show with the next 5 points:

1.
The world building is amazing! The minute details of the world are so fascinating. Tyffany built her world as much as it needed to be built for a Young Adult novel. The details weren’t explained in slabs of complicated writing, they were drip-fed to the reader throughout the story. From the cultures having their own custom gestures, some being rude in one culture but completely acceptable for another, to the movements of sea ports and kingdoms. In one scene, Tyli is studying the ways of the world to impress the Council who wish to test her as Queen and the lesson is fascinating. I would sit in just to listen to the way this world works. I would even read the World Bible as if it was a novel.

2
The pacing is perfect. It isn’t too slow or rushed: the action scenes move along at a steady to quick pace depending on if they impact the characters emotionally or physically. Sad scenes aren’t drawn out. They are dealt with in a good amount of time and referenced back to throughout the novel, reminding the reader of how everyone feels.
A death happens very early on and it is so surprising and crushing to the characters - and I’m not going to lie, my bottom jaw may have dropped - but they don’t dwell too heavily on the fact. They are immersed in their grief for a short period of time before it becomes obvious that they must do something, wallowing won’t help.
I also want to add that the chapters ended on little cliffhangers more often than not and that kept me so intrigued. I had to know what happened!

3
Important details weren’t info-dumped, they were brought out naturally into the story by others around the MC. Or, the MC came to the knowledge with her own doing. It can be tough to stay away from infodumping when explaining a new world to a reader but Tyffany is the perfect example of how to do it successfully.
On the same note, the magical elements were described and explained well. Every moment had a reason. I can’t say too much here as I’m fairly sure it is a spoiler but the new information presented was never a surprise, it was always realised slowly. Or speculated upon by another character. This is akin to real life.

4.
The creatures, man. The creatures. Along the way Tyli and her friends encounter some crazy things. Some sound cute while others are the most terrifying thing I could imagine.
We start off with Kotsani, which sound adorable in appearance but they have a nasty bite! Then there was Cavia, which are horrible maggot-like creatures. And then giant spiders! Yuck! My skin crawled immediately. They were huge spiders!
Afterwards, the character’s experience a banshee, who is the most evil thing to have ever existed, and must deal with her emotional torture.
Finally, they make it to...creepy shadow creatures that made me stop reading during the night! The next quote is the part I said a huge NOPE to and put the book down, waiting for daylight to read on.

“I saw them then, the creatures. Shadows that streaked up the walls and launched themselves onto the path behind us. They stalked closer.”

5.
By the end, Tyli is so down with what she has put her loyal friends through and doesn’t even know if she can succeed, her devastation is so clear. My heart hurt for her. Her feelings were completely justified, I could see her grow more morose with the situation as it grew on. Despite her friends kind words, she felt she had failed them.
But when the romantic moment I was waiting for finally happened, it took away all my anxieties. Tyli could be happy if only for the moment. And Nahara knows she deserved to be!

Next, I have to discuss the characters. They were so real, they came alive throughout the story - everything from their actions to their individuality to their appearance and personality.

Natylia is the MC. Thrown into a world of chaos and uncertainty, she struggles to keep her friends, suitor, sister and people happy. But she is such a beautiful soul. At the start of the novel, she isn’t well trained in combat or worldly studies but this was out of her control. When she begins training in both, she has a rough time yet doesn’t give up. She is a strong main character, one I connected with and enjoyed immensely.

Jyn has golden skin, he is an elf, he is a god with weapons. He is super protective and, at first I didn’t like him. I found him to be controlling and nasty. There were a few chapters were I wanted to yell at my Kindle app and I wrote some nasty things about him. However, he does redeem himself, his mother-hen attitude certainly begins to make sense. He adores his friends and would do anything for Tyli. And, he states some home truths that had me rocky fist pumping the air. Especially some words spoken between him and Lucian. I was like hell yeah!

Camion has sandy blonde hair, a heart of gold and some pretty dark secrets. His eyes are a vivid green in the centre and edged with a light blue. He is an apprentice blacksmith for his alcoholic father and so humble. I loved Camion from the start! He is so sweet. He is incredibly delightful to read and I cannot wait to know more about him.

Meryn is a nature witch. She works with herbs, spices, runes, etc., throughout the novel and this information is so fascinating. The herbs and spices she uses to heal or help the team are the same herbs I use, such as guarana. Meryn is in a relationship with Sylvr, and they are the next non-hetersexual characters we meet. Sylvr has light brown skin and mahogany curls and I am so excited to know more about them in book 2.

Annalea is Tyli’s sister and more of a mysterious background character.

Callithyia, the high priestess, has bronze skin. She has an ethereal feel to her that I really loved reading.

Lucian has daisy-yellow eyes. At first I liked Lucian, I found the relationship he and Tyli had to be silly and reminiscent of their past as children. It was sweet. But Lucian is a royal who doesn’t particularly know how to treat people or behave in a respectful manner. This does not excuse his actions but by the end of Imber, I saw why he was hurt and jealous. He has a lot of personal issues with Tyli. And that’s all I have to say about that!

Sexuality, gender and race comes naturally, it isn’t referenced like, “oh, here is so and so, they are a black, gay woman”. The characters are who they are.

Possibly my favourite quote in the book was: “I’m not a prize to be won.” And you will have to wait to see what this references but I am sure you will feel just the way I do.

I have so many questions, hopes and fears for book 2 and that is exactly the way book 1 should leave a reader feeling!

It’s not very often you stumble across an epic fantasy that undertakes changing so many “accepted” norms and turning them on their heads as “Imber” does. From the get-go this entire story is in first person, and just in the main character’s POV! That so rarely happens in fantasy that from the onset I found myself grinning. It may seem small, but it’s something Hackett does very well and is so different from the other fantasy books I read that I wanted to mention it up front. But anyway, “Imber” is a story of a young woman who steps into the role of queen under less than favorable circumstances: many of her citizens feel she is too young to rule. Despite that, Nat is determined to be the ruler they deserve, filling her beloved mother and father’s shoes. Her Council demands she prove that she’s ready to be queen, leaving Nat to fill her days with copious amounts of studying, and that’s on top of her learning how to wield a sword and fire a bow. None of these things come easily to her, but she tries nonetheless. But when rumblings that old rumors about ancient enemies might be more than just campfire stories begin resurfacing, swiftly followed by tragedy, Nat acts without hesitation. It may be an extremely impulsive decision, but never let it be said that Nat sends others to do jobs she wouldn’t herself do.

So let me back it up to those small details I was mentioning that make “Imber” different from your run of the mill epic fantasy. 1. Most fantasies have multiple POV’s. We only ever get Nat’s perspective, which is lovely as it leaves the reader second guessing as to what the other characters truly think and feel, much like Nat herself does. Nothing is ever spoiled chapter by chapter by another character’s POV revealing any hidden secrets. 2. There are elves in this story, Jyn, but they aren’t your standard Lord of the Rings elves. Jyn isn’t some regal snob who won’t get his hands dirty, plus, he actually has a personality, which is nice. 3. Nat has crazy anxiety and fear of crowds/public speaking. How awesome is that? A queen who has panic attacks each time she has to go in front of her people? It’s a weird thing to like, but I loved that struggle. I loved that her own nerves were her biggest enemy and she had to really work at a problem that so many people struggle with. Hackett’s description of what Nat goes through is so spot on, that I was often worried for the author (I’m here if you need me!). 4. Jyn and Nat’s relationship is 100% platonic. That’s not a spoiler, either. You hardly ever see a male and female character that are purely friends, who love each other but only as friends. Most of the time, there is this sexual tension between every male character for the female lead, but not so here and I love LOVE that Hackett did that. There’s also this great line Jyn has towards the end about that, which I won’t share because of spoilers. But needless to say, there was a lot of tropes the author took and flipped on their head, so kudos!

Jyn ended up being my spirit animal for a lot of the book. There were several instances where Nat does something where I ended up asking myself: “Why? Why are you doing this now? This is a really bad time. Nat, chill, think this through.” And then a chapter later, Jyn brought up all my concerns and gave them a voice. Not that Nat listens, but then it becomes something intentional, not just an easy way to move the plot along. AND! Nat’s impulse decisions totally bite her in the butt and she owns up to that. It’s not often that a main character accepts that something is their fault, that something is a failure and takes responsibility. Things do not go well on this hastily planned mission to save her kingdom from something that isn’t a true threat yet, and Nat realizes that. She never once brushes it off so her despair, her feelings of worthlessness when it comes to the lives she put in danger, hits the reader all the harder. Or it did me because I tended to be over in the corner with Jyn mumbling things like: “You totally called it Jyn. High five?”

As is the case with most first books in an epic fantasy trilogy, this book starts off slow, so know that ahead of time. Hackett takes her time showing us Nat, her struggles, and her world so that all the action that comes at the half way mark is that much more impactful. Nat may be queen, but she isn’t inherently the best at anything. She has to learn those skills, so the first half of the book is very much her training montage as she takes the time to learn how to be awesome at something, just like most of us! Once you get past that though, the book flies and becomes hard to put down, so prepare yourselves. Once Nat and crew head forth on their journey, the tone of the book takes on some serious Dungeons&Dragons vibes as Nat, Jyn, Meryn, and Camion find themselves assailed by all manner of beasties. Hackett’s creatures are just amazing and she shows off such a wide range of them that it’s rather harrowing to think that so many nasty things live so close to her peaceful little kingdom.

My only issue with the book comes in wanting to see more of certain things, never less (unless it’s Lucian, and then that’s for an entirely different reason). I wanted to see more of why Nat’s mother was so beloved, I wanted more of Meryn and seeing her doing fantastic magic, heck, I wanted to see more magic period. It’s clear the author knows her magic system so well that it comes second nature to her, because when it is present in the book, it all follows certain rules, but you just see so little of the magic that it’s hard to know the different types, how it functions, how certain people get their magic—or lose it—and why, what are its strengths or limitations, things like that. The descriptions used for the magic—and all the creatures, really—are just lovely so I get the impression that to see arcane magic in action is just all kinds of awe-inspiring. But that’s the thing, it was only just an impression and I’m still a bit confused as to how one character got their magic to begin with.

This is a super solid first book in what is shaping to be a thrilling trilogy. It has tender romance, loyal friendships, fantastic creatures, colorful magic (literally), and a main character who—despite her royal birth—is incredibly realistic and down to earth. Additionally, this book actually has an ending! It wasn’t a cheap cliff-hanger, although it does leave things clearly open for the sequel. The thing the characters set out to do gets accomplished—so to speak, dundundun!—and they figure out what needs to be done next, which will be what the next book focuses on. So while there is still plenty to be done, it didn’t end at the start of the action, either. I can’t wait for the next book as I’m sure all the things that were kind of missing this time around will be there in full force, so I’m giving this a well-deserved 4 stars and will end with a plea for Hackett to, sure, take your time and all, but hurry up with the next book! And thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of the book and for generally being an awesome human.

This was so good. Jyn’s overprotectiveness annoyed me at times but he is such an awesome and lovable character. Camion is definitely my favorite. He’s such a sweetheart and a beautiful character with an amazing personality and heartbreaking life. I’m cutting this review really short so I can start the next one but I highly recommend this series.

There can be so much noise in this world of independent authors and self-published books, so many new titles being shoved into the market every day, that finding a truly enjoyable, well-written novel can be like discovering a secret known only to a select few. Imber is one of those books, and I couldn't have enjoyed reading it more. The characters are perfectly crafted with personalities and idiosyncrasies that make them loveable from the first time they step into the story, and the depth at which Hackett developed the world in which the story take takes place should be a model for other adventure fantasy novelists to follow.
There is so much good about this book, that it’s hard to point out what didn't work, mostly because those items were rare and few in comparison. I'll briefly touch on them at the end of this review, but for now, let me gush a bit more.
My favorite part of the story was the point where the adventure really gets underway. This happens about the halfway point in the story, as Hackett takes her time establishing the criteria under which the adventure needs to be taken at all, as well as developing the rich, diverse relationship that her characters share. Once it does pick up, however, it reminded me of some of the old Dragonlance, Greyhawk, and Forgotten Realms D&D adventure novels. In fact, there were times when I felt I should have my twenty-sided dice nearby in case I needed to perform a dexterity save or etc. I won't go into the details of the adventure here to prevent spoilers, but let's just say at least one Giant Spider may have been involved.
The only parts that gave me reason to mark this one down from 5 stars, were all in the first half. There were a few points when the reactions of the townspeople seemed a bit out of line in comparison to the era in which the story was written. Basically, I didn't feel that the common folk should be as vocal about their distrust of their new ruler as earlier on as they were (like starting on the day of the new queen's Coronation). I understood why they might be upset, but it didn't seem to fit with the political structure of the kingdom where the story takes place. As I said earlier, my complaints on this book are barely worth mentioning since the good parts well outweigh the rest, and these are purely my own opinions and statements based on how I reacted during the reading, nothing else.
The final part that gave me pause, and forced me to reread a few paragraphs to be sure I understood what Hackett meant to say, was a few times when the author made a statement, followed by a ’but’, and then what followed the ’but’ had nothing to do with the first half of the sentence. Again, personal reaction, and not a major item.
Overall, I felt Imber was well worth 4.75 stars and greatly anticipate reading more of this authors work.

*** Alright, I read this book early - and am not counting on my Goodreads read list yet... I want to read the fancy print version to count... but I also needed to share my initial thoughts as far as a quick review... so here are my initial thoughts for review... more to come after my reread soon...

I read a ton of fantasy... and as JRR Tolkien is my baseline for fantasy, I have a high standard. So I would totally put Imber in at 4.5 stars!

Tyffany Hackett has created a world that is mysterious and exciting, the perfect combination for a new fantasy writer.

Most importantly for me, the world building flows with the story, allowing readers to truly fall into this world for a bit and leave behind reality - a fantasy reader's dream, really. And while on this adventure readers will have no choice but to see the challenges before Nat & Jyn.

These two characters will steal your heart quickly... They are well developed and easy to picture, allowing readers to soon become attached, rooting for them... add in a ton of snarky comments, and quick wits... then a bit a romance... well, this is an excellent read!

If you are a fantasy fan and looking for a new author to follow, I couldn't recommend this one more.

An amazing novel! Imber was warm and cute and sad and thrilling and I loved it so much. The characters are pure gold, I want to give each of them a hug (at least, most of them lol). The world building and mythology gripped me from the start. A literal journey, Natylia went through a lot and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for her and the others! 🖤🖤🖤

This book is a great start to a series that is set up to be epic! I enjoyed the world building a lot and cannot wait to explore more of this world, but what I really loved most about this story were the characters, especially Natylia, who is a very real heroine, with her stubbornness but also her fears and anxiety that make her very relatable, and Jyn, her guard and friend who is—and I say this with no shame—the love of my life. The other characters made for a great supporting cast to Natylia, a squad that has nothing to envy those of bigger books. Seriously, this book deserves to be famous!

The only reason I am not giving this a full five star rating is the pacing of the book. The first half is a bit slower, but it was a necessary evil to better introduce the reader to the world and the characters. The second half was adventurous and full of action that made it hard for me to put the book down and sleep. The ending of the book promises an exciting sequel—and the continued mention of Andimir is making me super excited! Dear goodness, I feel the potential for a new favorite character. Can’t wait to meet him!

Tyffany Hackett's debut novel is a wonderful fantasy novel with rich characters and detail. It's a little slower paced than I'm used to, but as it does seem to be more on the epic side of fantasy, that isn't surprising. What did surprise me is that the action mentioned in the blurb doesn't happen until about 50% of the way in. Even so, the first 50% of the book did a great job of setting up the rest of the novel, and the novel did a great job of setting up the rest of the series.

One of Hackett's greatest strengths is her characters. She has got quite a cast, and I enjoyed reading about them all. While I don't agree with the description that Natylia is a spitfire, I did find her to be a very real character. She's often afraid, anxious, worrying, but still strong and determined to do what is right. Jyn is wonderful, of course, and he's depicted as a loving friend with no romantic interest whatsoever (which is always an interesting dynamic that is almost never shows in YA). Camion is fantastic, sweet and strong, and I actually feel like Meryn fits the spitfire description much better. The minor characters too had their own good characteristics.

The worldbuilding, too, is very strong within this novel. There was no excessive info-dumping, which I appreciated, and while sometimes I was impatient with the details given, I felt they still conveyed the world she was trying to show us.

As I mentioned before, the plot is slow-paced, but I didn't feel like there were any filler scenes. Everything built on everything else. I'm not used to slow-paced novels, so I did get impatient at times, but that's a fault of my own, not the author's.

There was one plot-based problem that I struggled with throughout the novel, since I felt it messed with the characters', mostly Natylia's, motivation. A lot of Natylia's driving force is built on proving to the people who want her off her throne that she is a worthy leader, that she can protect them. Most of their problem, however was If she had defended herself against them, tried to explain that their reasoning made no sense, then she might have proved to them better that she was worthy. I wish her motivation had stuck to just defending the kingdom instead of also needing to prove herself to them.

Anyways, the fact that that was my only problem is awesome! The rest of the story was solid and I enjoyed it quite a bit! I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I was up half the night reading it. I love the characters especially Jyn amd Meryn. Natylia is a great MC, yoy really empathise with what she is doing by ascending to the throne and also trying to balance what is in her heart.

I also really enjoyed the world building, it felt like i could step into Natylia world and be there. The mythology behind the story of the keys is great and definetly left me wanting to know more. I really like Tyffany's writing style, it flows and draws you into the story until you can't stop reading. It feels to me that she has been writing for a while and doesn't feel like a debut novel.

There is some foreshadowing for book 2 as well and I really hope that it comes soon (no pressure, I know it takes time and love and no social life) but I just really enjoyed it and cannot wait for the next one.

There is also romance as well as magic with the romance being a slow burner, it's really just the right amount. And it doesn't go the way you think it does either.

I really can't say enough nice things about this book. For me it contained just the right amount of magic, romance, friendship and fantasy that sucks me straight into a novel and I don't want to put it down. This is a 4.5 star read for me and I am lookong forward to whatever Tyffany does next.

KEPT ME ENTERTAINED.

BLOG || INSTA

Which is saying something. I constantly felt like picking this book up and continuing the story. It had the right kind of magic for me to really enjoy. The pacing was good throughout and the flow was steady with waves of action and lighter moments.

Nataylia was a great main character. I love that she was strong and brave, but had her faults. She felt more real and like an actual human. Not a pretty much perfect Princess turned Queen who’s hard to love. Her motives are for the betterment of her people and Nataylia is fueled by her love for her friends and family.

The romance was a bit of a miss for me. Namely because I had my eyes on a different character for Nataylia. And it wasn’t even a love triangle, I apparently saw a lot of chemistry between her and Jyn and am still accepting that she’s with Camion. I do love Camion though. He’s a sweet, caring cinnamon roll who needs a hug. One of my favorite kinds of book boyfriends. Their relationship is adorable and pure so I’m slowly building a ship for them and I’ll decide if I want it to sail during book two.

The magic system is broad, yet well explained. I understood the information and loved the adventure Nataylia and her cohorts had to go on to find one of these magic scepters. There’s a lot of action as they traverse through catacombs and dungeons, with a heavy dose of magical creatures standing in their way. It kept me on edge because I was wholly convinced someone was not walking out of there alive.

A great fantasy that needs a bigger audience. I’m grateful that I saw a friend recommend this because she has never steered me wrong in book choices! I’m excited for the next book.

Overall audience notes:
- Young adult fantasy + romance
- Language: none
- Romance: a kiss
- Violence: magic, murder, swords, animal/creature attacks

*I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

When I started Imber it was a bit overwhelming being thrown face-first into a very descriptive and a bit too realistic anxiety attack of my future Queen. Accepting that this was just where we were and pushing away my own anxiety I grabbed onto Natylia and let her pull me into her queendom of Thrais. Riddled with assassins and murder and terrible dance partners, Natylia isn't just a damsel in distress she is a damsel who is distressed who is doing something about it, and you can help if you want, but she is going with or without you. She learns to take care of herself and work through her problems while still remembering she doesn't have to have all the answers, it's okay to get support!!!
Speaking of support all of the characters surrounding her have a purpose and depth! No token characters just friends and foes and mysteries to be solved. Jyn isn't the romantic interest of the book but he stole my heart with all of his snark and dashing elf-ishness. Camion is so kindhearted and a steady rock for my Queen as her life gets shaken to pieces. Meryn offers friendship and witchery and mystery.
It has a solid ending but at the same time leaves many strings to be followed so the next tale can be woven.
This is one of those books I'm going to read again and again, just to feel at home and understood. It's the kind of fairytale that if I had kids I would read them before bed to remind them they can face whatever their future holds.
I stayed up all night to finish this book and then stayed up the next night to read the second. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone. I kinda feel like I should just go stand out in the yard and tell everyone who walks by to read Imber. Read!!!!

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book feels a lot like a first draft: the author had some ideas and wrote a book, but then she forgot to go through it again and see how well it translated to the page. You have logic fail after logic fail, serious pacing issues, things that are set-up but don’t get a payoff while others don’t get any foreshadowing, character development inconsistencies, and a world-building in need of some love. The book needed a beta reader to point out these obvious flaws and, hopefully, lead it to its full potential.
There are cool characters with great relationships between them. The little of the world we see needs work, but it looks interesting. And the plot could be fantastic with better pacing and touch on the stakes and its consequences. At the end of the day, you have some great ideas with a poor execution.

Detailed, 1000-word review in my blog.

Great start to a series! The characters were my favorite part of this book. I instantly connected with our protagonist Nat. Her emotions were so well written and realistic. I felt her pain and grief (and even cried with her at times). I love reading strong friendships and this book delivered. You can really tell that Jyn, Meryn and Cam care for Nat like family. While the romance was subtle, it melted my insides and I can’t wait to read more between the two of them. Once the adventure kicked in I couldn’t put the book down! The stakes were high and the dangers they faced had me on the edge of my seat. I also felt that the injuries and physical limitations were believable (which is important as a nurse). I am excited to continue my journey with this fun and heartfelt cast of characters.

Where do I even begin?
This book hooked me right from the start. I was immersed in Natylia’s world and it was hard to leave to do ‘real life’ stuff.
The romance between Tyli and Camion happened naturally and when they finally kissed… oh my goodness I squealed with joy!
I just cannot express in words how much I enjoyed this book!!
My rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 glorious stars!
I highly recommend this book and I am eager to see what happens next in Tellus!

This was a wonderful start to the series! Leave it to tyffany to get my totally attached to these wonderful characters! I just love Jyn and Camion and the ladies too of course! Things really got exciting towards the end of the book! I can’t believe I waited so long to start this series! Can’t wait to read the other two books!

My Indie book of the year. The strongest component of this book is the characters, who I miss now that I have finished book one. (Good news, there are MORE BOOKS with them).
