Wow!

After reading the first book in this series I wasn't sure i wanted to continue on. It was good but didn't leave me pumped for book 2. I'm so glad i finally read it. I enjoyed Treasure of Darkness and found it to be better than Another Man's Treasure. I'll be diving into book 3 right away! I love the characters, especially Audrey. I'm emotionally invested in them and can't wait to see what happens next. My only complaint is i felt a couple things were left unresolved at the end. What happened after the money was given back in regards to Audrey's business? And what about Sharon? She disappeared one day and no one in her family has heard from her or tried to find her. Is she alive and well somewhere?

The twist towards the end was excellent. I never saw that coming. I suspected that's what they would find but not what it ended up actually being.

I definitely recommend this series. The first book is good, the second one better (I couldn't put it down), and book 3 looks promising.

On a sidenote: One of the things I love about this series is that it's set in New Jersey, my homestate, and the author lives in Morristown which isn't far from where I grew up. For me the books are a treat and a bit nostalgic.

""...like a flamingo in a flock of ducks...""
What an excellent book - well written, beautifully narrated, great characters, two simple but very effective plot lines set in a very convincing back story. Sheer delight.
The story focuses around Audrey, a young woman who runs her own house clearance sale business, and her two employee friends, Ty and Jill. Things have not been going well for Audrey recently but finally seem to be looking up when, totally unexpectedly, the good name of her company is called into question when she is deemed to have (albeit inadvertently) broken a contract and lost a large sum of her client's money. With no other work forthcoming, she reluctantly agrees to help partially clear the about to be condemned house of an obsessive horder whilst trying to get back the lost money of her former client. Meanwhile her personal life begins to fall apart as already conflicting feelings for a local police investigator are increasingly confused as he, too, is involved with her in the pursuit of a man responsible for death of a teenager.

Very carefully constructed and told in the first person by Audrey, this book never once feels unrealistic or improbable. The book is visual, almost tactile at times. The main protagonists all have a life of their own and are completely three dimensional and solid, being able to surprise whilst still staying in character. Even the minor players are well drawn. This verisimilitude is enhanced by the marvellous Janelle Tedesco, who not only takes on the personality of Audrey herself, adding depth and feeling by her reading, but also convincingly voices all of the other characters, giving each their own distinct lives. Her performance is a pleasure to hear, never abrasive to the ear but always well modulated and clearly delivered. And always perfectly fitting the text. Superb.

As the story progresses, the reader is increasingly drawn into the growing mystery surrounding the background of the old horder and the house he has so packed with his acquisitions as well as the desperate search for the stolen money. But the ending still comes as a surprise.
My thanks to the right's holder who gifted me Treasure of Darkness, via Audiobook Boom. It is not an all action book but is never, ever dull, with continuous gentle excitements. I loved it. This is the second story in the series but completely stand alone. I look forward to the next and, whilst waiting for it to be published, intend to go back to the first in the Palmyrton Estate Sale Mystery series, which I have not yet read/heard, and enjoy another treasure of a story.
Highly recommended

I thought this was a very intriguing mystery that really held the listeners interest. There were things I never saw coming and parts that really are mind blowing. Some parts are very believable where a few I am not sure of. What really matters is the author and narrator work together to make this a very entertaining read. This is a sad and at times depressing story that is full of mystery, kindness, love, hate, along with lots of junk. Ones person junk is another man’s treasure there is no doubt about this. My heart really went out to this adorable mentally ill hoarder as the town goes against him for reasons of their own. The neighbors are something else even though they have a valid point I just thought a few were over the top and should see the end side of a jail cell for a few days.

Ms. Tedesco did an OUTSTANDING job of narration from the character voices down to their emotions. You are never left guessing what everyone is feeling. Audrey’s father who had a stroke and a speech problem the narrator did a wonderful authentic job of his voice. I loved how her voices all blended together naturally giving each character their own personality that worked well with the story. I felt each complimented the other why pulling you in giving you a story you couldn’t put down. I did not hear any background noises or any repeats of words. What the narrator delivers is a wonderful clean, clear crisp audio. The audio volume is even throughout with no high or low places. If any breaks were taken I could not tell. I loved the emotion Ms. Tedesco puts in her voice never leaving you guessing what each person is feeling from anger to happiness she hits each one right on the mark. This is the first time I have listen to her and can’t wait to listen to more of her work. Her voice is very pleasant pulling you in painting a picture you can see in your mind as each scene unfolds giving you a wonderful compelling listen.

When one sale goes bad Audrey is left holding the bag as one customer shows just how unhappy she is with their transaction by going on the social media dragging her name through the mud. With no jobs coming she has to take on a hoarders house to try and find things of value to not only pay herself but to help a dear old man get the help he needs. The author really goes into details of just how bad a hoards house looks. It really blew my mind but at the same time I know people live this way. I had no trouble picturing each room and hallway filled with just a very small place to walk. When you add mental illness to the sweet old man you just can’t help yourself for the feelings and the pull on your heartstrings. As they hit gold the path only leads to dirt as things happen to keep them from getting through the mess. The story really has a few stories inside its self that really pulls the reader in. The mystery of who, why really gets to you when you find out the reasons behind it. The BIG mystery will blow your mind it makes you wonder if more than one didn’t have metal issues. There is a love story in here that is one step forward and a few back until Audrey gets her mind made up. Oh she has her reasons but you wonder if it isn’t more fear than anything. There are great supporting characters that really add so much to the story. Along with some major facts about hoards and health issue they bring with it. It really opens the reader’s eyes to just what a major problem this is for many reasons. The ending is just lovely as you see how everyone is doing and just what happen to the hoarder and his family.

I was really hooked for the most part throughout this listen. The author gives you major twist that you won’t see coming as well as a compelling listen that really gets you right in your heart. I could really feel the characters pain. It really was a very good audio that I had trouble putting down. This is the first book I have read/listened to by this author. I am really looking forward to checking out more of her work.

If you have ever watched the show Hoarders, you will be able to visualize this story! I don't know about you, but that show amazes me how anyone can live in those conditions..it's like a train wreck and you can't look away.

The first 25% or so of the book is another mystery and I was wondering if I had the wrong description on the book...but it sets you up to understand why Audrey and her company has taken on the task of helping someone clean out their house enough to prevent it from being condemned. There are actually 2 mysteries happening in this book and while they don't tie in together there is some overlap where you think that the actions of some are tied to the missing soup cans when it has to do with the past of those that lived in the house that is filled with items/debris.

It is an interesting cast of characters and while this is the 2nd in the series, can be read without having read the first other than some references to the first book (and the crime involved) and also the personal relationships. I'm not sure I am wild about Ty's character...but he is young and seems to have a huge chip on his shoulder so he is the "angry" character to create difficulties for others.

Good read!

The Perfect Mix of Romance and Thrills

I was so drawn in by these characters that I didn't want this story to end! After reading Another Man's Treasure a while back, I was excited for this new book. S.W. Hubbard definitely does not disappoint! It's the perfect mix of Romance and Thrills. I would recommend Treasure of Darkness to friends that love getting 'wrapped up' in characters and settings of a GREAT read!

I really like the writing style of Ms. Hubbard. The story moves along well and the characters are well developed. I like the characters a lot, which is a big part of the whole package. The plot is well paced and kept me turning pages when I should have been counting sheep! I will definitely be reading the next one. Sounds like wedding bells to me, which will open up a lot more possibilities for story lines.

Love love love!

This series is not a fluffy cozy mystery at all. This series is full of mystery, drama, intertwining family strife and complications all wrapped up in a tangled knot of life. You will get sucked in and then you look up and realize the world has been turning while you are engrossed in a fictional tale so good, it feels real.

Enjoyable Read

There are always lots of subplots to keep track of in these Estate Sales books but I enjoy them. I didn’t figure out the “bad guy” until the end. On to book 3.

I was delighted to find out after finishing the first book, that there would be an audio version of this book. I downloaded the ebook right away, but then decided to wait for the finished audio after all, since Janelle Tedesco had done such a great job with the first book.

I was not disappointed. Not only is the content of this book as engrossing as that of the first one, but Janelle lived up to my expectations. Again, she did a great job at bringing the characters to life. I don't know how she does it, but each character from the first book was instantly recognizable here. The speech impediment of Audrey's dad was again done extremely well, which is no mean feat! And yet, you aren't really aware that there is a narrator; it simply feels as if the various people are talking.

On the surface, this is a mystery story, but there is so much more in it: social criticism, and strong female characters, as well as lovable male characters. I already know that I'm going to miss them until the third volume will be available as audio book in spring 2017! I feel as if I know all the people. I guess that is because they talk and act so 'normal', for lack of a better word, even if the things happening to them are far from my own level of experience, but I totally buy into the story because of the language used here.

If you're on the lookout for a good, well written, convincing story, do yourself a favour and listen to this series.

This audio book was given to me by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost.
I'm happy to review it and to share my enjoyment of it with the world at large.

Wonderful book in the continuing life of Audrey and her estate sale company Another Man's Treasure. While cleaning out a house Audrey and her crew are asked to handle donating unwanted items to registered charities. They pack up the cans of food in the pantry and send them off to a local food bank. Due to some confusion caused by a language barrier a day laborer ends up taking the cans home with him instead. Only problems is some of the cans don't contain soup anymore. The eccentric home owner had been cleaning the cans, filling them money and welding the lids back on. His family realizes what has happened when one of them opens one of the few cans they had taken to their home and instead of soup they find $100 bills rolled up inside the can. Audrey and her crew are off on a wild adventure to try and retrieve the money. The vengeful daughter has been working hard to ruin Audrey's business. So to be able to pay the bills they end up working to clean out a hoarder's house. This sets off another round of angry folks. Many of the neighbors just want the house to be condemned and leveled and if Audrey and crew can get the house clean enough the health inspector won't condemn the house. So they end up with protesters on the street. They also seem to have angered someone with something to hide. Will Audrey and her crew managed to find out what is so important or valuable it is worth killing to keep secret? Will they find enough of value in the house for Audrey to pay the bills?

I received this book for free from AudioBlast in exchange for my honest review.

I really like this book (and the series, so far). Maybe its the times I have spent watching "Antique Roadshow" that have had me fascinated about finding a treasure amongst others' castoffs at an estate sale. I love how each book not only contains a mystery, but also has information about antiques and collectibles (in this case, Tiffany lamps, which I have a great fondness for). I really like all the characters and how each one has such a different personality that you wouldn't think they would work well together, but they do. I love the camaraderie between them. One of my other favorite things about this book is that the care (or lack of care available) for the mentally ill who are not a threat to themselves or others, is addressed, and I feel like I learned a lot. I listened to the Audible audio edition of this book narrated by Janelle Tedesco, and I really enjoy her narration. She has unique voices for each of her characters (though some of the male voices sound similar), and great pacing. This is probably one of my top five mystery series, and I can't wait until the audio comes out for the next book.

Treasure of Darkness -a review by Rosemary Kenny

Another Man's Treasure owner Audrey is waiting for delayed confirmation of a huge contract, when she's contacted for help by (regular 'customer'), Harold the Hoarder's daughter Nora. It appears that if the local Health Department condemns his home as unfit to live in, due to the vast amount of items Harold's amassed over many years. As Harold's not considered a danger to himself or others none of the local homes or hospitals will accept him on a permanent basis.

Why does Jill get involved in clearing Harold's house? What does she find under the hoard?
What does Ty do with the unwanted cans of soup? When Nora finds out, what happens next?
Who is Ramon? How is he involved? What valuable documents does Audrey look for upstairs?
Why does Ty use Audrey's car and how does he 'disguise' it? What happens between Sean and Audrey? Where does Audrey find George and Phoebe - and what is their long-hidden secret?

S W Hubbard cleverly finds a heady mix of romance, treasure-hunting, death and danger to keep the eager murder-mystery fan completely satisfied and entertained right to the very end!

4 stars for this one. I really like the relationship between Audrey and her team, as well as her relationship with Sean. This one touched on mental illnesses, including hoarding. It was sad, but poignantly portrayed. The neighbor from hell deserved to be brought down several notches. She was a bitch from hell, and I personally would not have been adverse to setting her straight. The riot scene made me cry. It's so true, how one person can lead a crusade of hatred and malice, and others will tag along like sheep.

The revealing scene was heartbreaking for me. I, also, know that heartbreak. But Ms. Hubbard did a beautiful job of portraying the times, the thoughts, and the judgemental nature of older generations.

The ending made me weep, happily. Oh, and I love Grandma Betty! I want a Grandma Betty!

Terrific series

I read #2 in series last, but it was my favorite. I can see reading these in order would give you a better picture of the character's personal lives, but the stories are very much stand alone. The editing is good, no typos. The language is clean and story flows well. Overall, one of the best series I've read. Highly recommended.

Good one. I look forward to reading more from this author.
The characters are interesting and the plot was complicated enough to keep me guessing.
Just to remind me of the storyline....the main character's business is estate sales. When she gets maligned by a client over money in a can, she agrees to sort through a hoarders' home while things get cleared up.

Actually finished the book months ago but somehow the Amazon review never linked to Goodreads. S. W. Hubbard writes genteel tales of skulduggery and misdeeds which never quite stray into “cozy” territory. I love Hubbard’s unique ability to set the scene and make her point without the splashy gore and blatant violence in other contemporary writers’ works.

Audrey attracts interesting characters

You will love meeting Audrey and her unlikely group of friends. There is no better combination than fun characters and a bang up storyline. Although more a cozy than a hard boiled, be prepared to hold your breath a few times! Recommended!

Well-written, well-crafted mystery

I’ve read three others in the series and enjoyed them all. Likable heroine, dry humor and very readable. The books can be read out of order, but they do follow a progression.

Not my usual kind of fiction reading (i.e., it's not historical), but entertaining. Protagonist Audrey is the owner of Another Man’s Treasure Estate Sales—"we do the dirty work families don’t have the energy or the courage to do themselves." Brings to mind the sadness I feel when I go to estate sales and see the things that were once someone's personal treasures now messily stacked on folding tables with cheap price tags attached. Audrey notes "A ghostly outline of the china cabinet on the flowered wallpaper is all that’s left of countless Christmas dinners."

Audrey's business suffers credibility when one of her employees inadvertently gives away cans of soup that didn't sell to an undocumented day worker. Turns out the soup cans were loaded with cash. While trying to track down the immigrant and retrieve the money, she takes on work clearing the home of a hoarder and finds her life threatened. There is something strange going on with the contents of the house. She makes some decisions that are about as smart as those made by teenagers in dark, empty houses in the movies. A fun, mindless read. First in a series, but I don't think I'd make the effort to find more of them (since the library doesn't have them and it wasn't good enough to pay for. I got this one as a free e-book).

🤔

Before I start I havent read the first book in this series, didn't realise to begin with it was a series. I just blindly jumped into the book lol.
Ok so I really really found the main character Audrey hard to like. I found her very standoffish and very argumentative for the sake of it. Most times in my eyes for no reason whatsoever, but a wee bit into the book you start to understand kind of why and I think if I had read the first book maybe I'd know better why she's like that 🤷‍♀️.
The premise of the story was very intersting and took a wee while to get into though and I will admit I almost gave up on it a couple of times but glad I persevered.
