Texas rancher Nathaniel Meier always puts his responsibilities first. With his father dead, his brothers away, and his mother off “finding herself,” it’s Nat who runs their sprawling ranch. But with cattle to sell and the bank breathing down his neck, he needs all the help he can get, even when that help comes from the last person he ever expected to see again—his childhood sweetheart January Rose.
Free-spirited January always dreamed of traveling the world. The moment she turned eighteen, she left Close Call, Texas behind and barely looked back. So now that she’s home, she intends to stay only long enough to earn some cash and get back on the road. But when she comes face to face with Nat Meier, she quickly realizes the boy she left behind is now all man.
Even for a nomad like January, wanderlust sometimes gets lonely, and Nat is the one person who’s called to her, even after a decade apart. But for a man ruled by responsibility and a woman whose suitcase is her home, the future is uncertain. And the closer they get, the more Nat worries he’s going to get burned…again.
New to Leslie? Readers suggest starting with 'The Bossy One' (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C6BP3BBF) —Imagine a sunny Minnesotan Mary Poppins, employed by a grumpy Irish billionaire. The story is a blend of humor, revenge, passion, heartbreak, hope, and witty banter. As one reader put it, ‘This story had me squealing at the romantic moments and silly moments.’

I’m going to be honest, I was drawn to this book because of the drool-worthy cover. There’s just something about cowboy hats…
Firstly, I have to commend the author for talking about the smell of the pasture. It’s certainly unique and remembering that smell brought me right back to my childhood. It seems way too many books forget to write about the smell of places, especially if it’s not something anyone would want to bottle up and buy as a perfume.
January was a super likable character. For the last 10 years, she’s been traveling the world. Living the life and sending strategic postcards back home. The thought of staying in one place for too long feels suffocating for her. She’s also super sweet and names all the animals on the ranch.
This is a second chance romance. 10 years ago, January and Nathanial were in love. She ripped his heart out when she left to fulfill her dream of traveling the world. When she unexpectedly returns to town there is still an undeniable connection between the two of them. Understandably, Nathanial isn’t willing to risk experiencing that hurt again.
I absolutely love when animals capture my heart in books and the cow and calf, Reece and Mae, managed to do that. They were adorable. Their personalities and the way January interacted with them was my favorite part of the book.
Tempting the Rancher was a good story, I found the characters relatable, and the struggles they faced felt realistic. However, my one big complaint, and I mentally took 2 stars off for this, is that I was bored. I didn’t see an introduction, rising tension, climax and resolution like I do in most books. It was simply moderate tension and resolution. The idea for the story was great in theory. But, on paper, it lacked enough drama and action to keep me interested. I felt as though I was reading the same concerns and situations over and over again.
With that said, I had to add another star for the epilogue. It tied everything up exactly the way I had hoped and left me with a smile on my face.
Overall, Tempting the Rancher was a solid read if you enjoy stories about life on a ranch. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a light read that will leave you with a smile on your face.
This was a short quick read that I liked. Nathaniel Meier runs a ranch and he needs help with his father dead and his mother off finding herself it is up to him. January Rose is a free spirit she is also Nat's childhood sweetheart. January who is out of money, and was only back at Close Call to pick up her inheritance and be on her way to another work-travel assignment in Nepal. She was a bit shocked to find her mother Mona was living in a van on Close Call land. Mona was hoping January would stick around for a while and seeing as she was here now, she was going to make sure January got to work helping Nat herd the cattle ready for sale. This was a book that I liked this was my first time reading this author Nat is a hot sexy cowboy January broke his heart and I liked that he was willing to give her another chance. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
January and Nat dated in high school. However, the minute she hit 18, January took off to travel the world and left Nat behind. It’s 10 years later, and she’s back just long enough to save some money and leave again.
Nat never expected to see the girl who broke his heart ever again. When she shows up on his ranch, he’s stunned. She more beautiful than ever, still easy to be with and talk to, but he’s not getting his heart broken again.
January has no intention of staying any length of time in her hometown. Yet, the more time she spends on the ranch and with Nat, she suspects what she’s travelled all over the world looking for has been right here at home all this time.
Nat and January were depressing characters for over half the book. Her wanderlust never finding what she was looking for. His unfulfilled dreams and frustrations with running the ranch.
I just couldn’t feel the connection between these two. I wanted more from them, more character development, more romance. The story moves very slowly for the short length.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by the author.
She's a distraction he doesn't need. He's a responsibility she doesn't want. So how can it be that the wrong fit seems to be their perfect match? When it comes to the call of the wild, North proves she's well versed in that language. Sparks fly, hearts break and love conquers all.
North is a talent for finding, looking, searching and finally capturing the happily ever after! Nat Meier found his love but she got away. January Rose explores destinations looking for adventure but what has she left behind? A decade has passed and history is destined to repeat itself. Can Nat embrace January again and can she let him hold her? Great start to a new adventure. A copy of this book was provided by Relay Publishers via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion."
***An ARC of Tempting the Rancher by Leslie North was generously provided to me via NetGalley in exchange for honest review.
3.5 stars, I enjoyed this book but it's not exactly my favorite. Simply because I was expecting more, you know, drama. One of my favorite thing in the world. Of romance. Not in the world world, but more like things that spice up my reading. Hehe. But overall I adore the chemistry between the characters and the writing also pretty good. It's the first time I read a book from this author. Definitely will read more.
This was a fun second chance romance that should satisfy readers who appreciate the romance but not a lot of gritty sex.
I love stories where they guy is left holding a burning flame for a wild woman and this story definitely gave me that! January was a great character for me in that she was unsettled and on the move and living life. She has such a free spirit and that really pulled me in to her character.
Nat also had an element that I adore and that is the steady man who has his feet deeply rooted in one place. He is solid...and loyal...and fierce in his feelings for January and in his attempts to protect himself from her wanderlust.
Together these two made an outstanding story for me as they fought through so many factors to find out if there really was a future for them.
This story will make you laugh, give you a bit of adventure and definitely pull at your heart strings.
Told in alternating first person POV between Nat and January, this story also introduces us to several secondary characters that make this series one to look forward to. Looking forward to Wes!
Reading time for Tempting the Rancher was a little over 2 hours, so it is easy to read on a lazy afternoon. The cover isn't bad to look at either!
I gave Tempting the Rancher 4 stars! Review by Corrie H for Lamplight Review and Promotion **I received an ARC for an honest review.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
If you like hot contemporary romance novels then you so so have give this author a try. I fell in love with some of her previous trilogies and this one lived up to all of my expectations. We get to meet Nat who runs the family ranch though it is on shaky financial ground. Enter January the love that got away who just thinks she is only back home temporarily. I like the emotional depths that are involved and the fact that these are dealt with instead of ignored. The romance follows a nice progression without being a set formula layout. Of course the steamy scenes are quite hot as well. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars and will be looking forward to book two.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review! I honestly cannot find anything that I don't like about any book written by Leslie North! They always have everything I look for and love to read about in a book!! Tempting the Rancher is the first in another series & I have to say it is starting the series off with a bang!!! In this book Nat/Nathaniel Meier, a rancher trying to keep the family ranch operating and profitable, and January Rose, a free spirit and ghost from his past, has come back home after being away travelling for 10 years. But she says she's only back for a short time. By the end of that time they both are reevaluating "what" & "who" they want out of life! I recommend that you read this book and find out, & enjoy the romance 😍 and the burning attraction 🔥 they still have for each other! Not to mention the thigh slapping humor 😂 and more!! Can't wait to read the next book!!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks to the author for providing a copy of this book via Netgalley
It was refreshing story: the heroine dumped our hero 10 years ago. She wanted to see the world, she hated small town life. She had more partners than him. Our hero was good and tender man. I liked him a lot. Will see forward to read more books from this author.
This is book one in the Meier Ranch Brothers series and it features Nat and January. Their journey was difficult. Two completely opposite people who couldn’t love each other more but love isn’t always enough. My heart often broke for Nat. I wondered if he’d told her about some of her fathers lies, would she have made the same choices? Speaking of choices, hers didn’t always make her my favorite character.
Wonderful, smooth flowing story line. I can’t wait to read book 2, Wes’s story.
I really enjoyed this short story. I was happy that in the end they both were finally happy. January was the type of person that always wanted to be on the go. i didn't think she had it in her to settle down. so props to her. I was happy for Nat he finally was able to have all and who that he wanted. I look forward to reading more books in this series.
An emotional story through past pain toward the future. Nat is so worried the past will repeat itself he almost forfeits his future. Nat and J’s connection transcends years and distance. A story full of connection, passion, pain, healing, family, and love. Looking forward for the next in the series.
Her leaving broke his heart ten years ago. Now she’s back for a visit, will he survive when she leaves again? I laughed and cried while reading this heartfelt cowboy’s story.
Received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
I’ve been very fortunate to have found Leslie North’s books thru Netgalley & she has quickly become a favorite author. Her books are generally very quick to read - so they can take you away on a quick get away 👍
This book is one of my absolute favorites of hers so far & can’t wait to read the rest in the series. Nat & January were in love at 18 until “J” decides she needs to be like her Dad & travel the world hoping in the process to find herself . Nat has been her only true love but upon returning to the ranch where they grew up she knows she can never hurt him again - she barely survived leaving the first time.
Nat is angry as he was the one left behind ....... the responsibility of running his family’s ranch is something he deeply loves but also a stressful burden. He left college & a dream of being a published writer .... when January returns for a brief stay the attraction & love they have for each other is still very much there as well as the fear that they are giving away their chance at something so much more ....
Both characters are so well written & you really feel what is motivating them - however as the reader you know they are meant to be together❤️ This was a night 🦉 read for me !! Up till early am reading to finish this really GREAT book - great story !!!!
I always enjoy stepping into the world of a new Leslie North trilogy or series, and this beginning story to the Meir Ranch Brothers series is an emotional read on so many levels. There is deep hurt here, some anger and confusion, loneliness and resignation as well. As much as I liked both Nat and January I also wanted to lock them in a closet so they would have to actually talk to each other and get some truths out there in the open.
Ten years ago January broke Nat’s heart and stomped it into the ground when she left him behind for her travel the world lifestyle. It broke him then, and if he can’t keep away from her now she’s going to break him once more… and this time there may be no coming back from that pain. January is convinced she’s following in her father’s footsteps by wandering the world. She’s content, if not happy, in the life she lives. She honestly does not believe she has it in her to stay in one place for very long. Yes, she loved Nate back then, and it hurt to leave but she simply couldn’t stay. Now she’s gone and fallen all over again so how’s she supposed to leave her heart behind once again?
In general I liked January, I didn’t like the decisions she often made or the reasons she gave. She’ll have to come to the hard realization that it’s not a place that makes one happy it’s a person who becomes “home”. It’s a hard lesson to learn, and she’s going to be kickin’ her heels all the way to that eventual understanding. Nat has taken on so much responsibility for the ranch, for the brothers who are off living their own life while he holds on to their family legacy by his fingertips at times. He had dreams of his own that never came true because life happens and you get on with dealing with it not running away from it. Because of my often times battling emotions on this story, it does come off as very realistic and life like. I enjoyed myself and I’ll definitely be picking up the next story in this series.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
This is a second chance romance where priorities differ, causing pain and uncertainty.
Nat has grown up on a cattle ranch and circumstances have left him with all the responsibilities. He has to make sure he can sell the cattle to satisfy the bank and he is short staffed.
January left home at eighteen to realise her dream of travelling the world, following in her father's footsteps! She is oblivious to the pain and heartache she left behind.
Ten years later whilst Nat is struggling to preserve his family legacy, January returns to claim her inheritance before taking off again. Her mother persuades her to give a helping hand until her paperwork goes through. Nat isn't thrilled with the idea, but he needs the help. It turns out that January has picked up a few tricks in her travels, some of which become useful in the work involved.
Nat is still suffering from their separation and tries to keep his distance to avoid history repeating itself. Sometimes, the heart has a way of dictating the head and in this case, Nat does what he swore he wouldn't do. Put himself in the same situation as before. The inevitable happens and although he lives in hope, January intends to go through with her plan. Can they find a way to keep their love alive?
It's hard to comprehend January's attitude. She is hurting as much as Nat, but unwilling to compromise until the very last minute. Nat is patient and suffers in silence. His dedication to his family legacy despite all the difficulties is admirable. Somehow, I found January to be a little selfish. She expects Nat to change whilst she isn't easily deterred from her wanderlust. The good thing is that Nat gets to do something else that he loves. It's a good concept, but a little long winded in places where it interferes with the main focus. It's a short read with a good ending.
I was kindly issued with an eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.
Nathaniel Meier is one hardworking rancher. He is the last man standing working the ranch in Close Call. With his Grandfather and Father dead and his Mother off "finding herself", his brothers living their own lives, he has the weight of the world on his shoulders just keeping his head above water, let alone the keeping the ranch running to a profit.
With the bank on his back and selling season in full steam, Nat certainly doesn't need the love of his life turning up after being off roaming the world for ten years.
January Rose was a wanderer, yes she loved Nathaniel Miller, but she was sure she made the right decision leaving the way she did. Nat was not of the same opinion but the hurt was just as raw now as it was ten years ago.
January was out of money, and was only back at Close Call to pick up her inheritance and be on her way to another work-travel assignment in Nepal. She was a bit shocked to find her mother Mona was living in a van on Close Call land. Mona was hoping January would stick around for a while and seeing as she was here now, she was going to make sure January got to work helping Nat herd the cattle ready for sale.
Of course Mona knows how January and Nat feel about each other, and if she can get January to finally leave her wandering ways behind and give Nat the chance he needs to convince her to stay, she will use every trick in the book along with a little bit of guilt for good measure to make it happen.
Great read in the first book of the series and looking forward to reading more about the Meier brothers.
Thanks to Netgalley and Relay Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book.
i read this book as part of an arc program. I really enjoyed this second chance romance between Nat and January. Nat and January were high school sweethearts and Nat thought they would be together forever. One day January left to travel the world without saying goodbye. In the ten years since, Nat took over his family's ranch and January never returned, she only sent post cards and a rare phone call to her mother. When January returned home to get money from her inheritance, Nat is still angry at her for leaving and when he sees her, he still has feelings for her. When January offers to help out with the ranch to get ready for the auction, they are stuck working together. Nat will not act on his attraction because he knows she is leaving again, no matter how much they both want to. Eventually it becomes too much for Nat and he gives into his feelings, thinking January will stay. January is a little lost and unsure of what she should do. She doesn't feel like she belongs anywhere, but she knows she does love Nat. This was a good story about second chances. January has to decide what is important to her and where she belongs. I liked how they really loved each other, even through the hurt and anger. Good one.
January Rose has always been a free spirit and as a teen, dreamed of traveling the world. The moment she graduated high school, she left Close Call, Texas and the man she loved.
Rancher Nathaniel Meier has always had to put his responsibilities first. His father died, his mother took off to "find herself" and his brothers are away. It is his responsibility to run the families cattle ranch. He struggles with making a profit every year with the bank breathing down his neck. This year, he needs all the help he can get when the last person he ever thought he would see again comes back - January Rose.
Ten years later, January has roamed the world, sending postcards from exotic locations. She has searched for that place to call home. Will she realize that Nat is her home? Can Nat take a risk to tame the wandering January?
I was amazed by this book. I loved the characters, from Nat and January to Mona and Wes when he returned home. The plot was like a rollercoaster of emotion with the tension between Nat and January so thick you could cut it. I felt like I was living on the Meier ranch.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
Die manchmal sehr heiß her geht.
I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC of Tempting the Rancher - my thanks to Hidden Gems. I really liked this book. I thought author Leslie North did a fine job of making the worn-out second chance romance trope seem fairly fresh with this lonely cowboy/gypsy-girl version set on a western ranch. Rancher Nat is the steadfast, dutiful brother who puts his own dreams on hold to handle the ranch - a family legacy he shares with absentee brothers. Trouble is, one of his dreams is world-traveler and temp worker January Rose, and when she returns for a brief R&R in their hometown, Nat can't let her go. He doesn't lie to himself, he knows he'll get his heart broken - again - but some dreams won't die. J Rose is like a lot of young people - the longing to belong and to feel rooted is strong, but she mistakes it as a longing for place, not realizing that home is where the heart is. How these two seemingly opposite personalities manage to reconcile their dissimilar needs and wants makes for a fine and steamy romance, and an HEA that promises more of the same for Nat's other brothers.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a good 3.5* second chance romance of January and Nat, who are reunited when January returns home from her world travels. They were together in high school, but January leaves the ranch and Nat to pursue her interest in seeing the world like she thinks her father did. She comes back to the ranch to see her mother and get access to her trust from her grandmother. To do this her mother insists she helps out during a particularly busy time there. The characters are interesting and have intense chemistry. The story did a good job of discussing both the back story of the characters and establishing the secondary characters that added to the overall book. My rating for the book comes mainly from how it ended and the idea of January's wanderlust being driven more from outside forces. I feel that was not adequately described or resolved.
Nate has always been the steady reliable and responsible type of guy even when he was younger. He's only spontaneous act was his love for January a free spirit. January alway wanted to travel to shake the dust of the small town see the world to find herself. She knew leaving Nate was going to be hard but it's something she has do so as soon as she turns eighteen she skips town no note no goodbye just leaves.
But now January is back 10 years later to get money from her trust fund. Old hurts run deep. Can Nat forgive her more to the point what happens now she back if she's back for good? Or will she leave again taking the last part of his heart with her? This is a good read slightly longer than needs to be. But you get the emotions of both characters. A enjoyable read
Nat seems to be the responsible one of the 3 Meier Brothers. He stayed home to run the family ranch and the success of the ranch, or should I say the ability to keep the ranch rests on Nat's shoulders. Never in a million years did he expect to see his first love, January, get out of a vehicle with a giant shrimp on top, and walk back into his life. Can he allow himself to get distracted and let her into his heart again, no....he has to stay focused on the ranch. January popped back home to get more of her inheritance so she can travel travel the world wherever the next adventure takes her. But she still has feelings for Nat. Can she settle down? Can her love for Nat be enough? This is a well written story about first loves, discovery that all is not as it seems, and fighting for what you want in life. I volunteered to read and review this book.
This story tugged at my heartstrings. It’s short but feels much longer, and in a good way. I love how some authors have the ability to do that.
Nat and January once had young love until January left. Now, ten years later, she’s back, but she’s only passing through. That right there is setup for heartbreak, and my heart did break a hundred times throughout this book.
Nat was my favorite character of the two. He was a determined cowboy with a soft heart. Everything he did was selfless. Even to his own detriment.
January seemed more like the villain, though she really wasn’t. She basically grew up on a lie and was just trying to be like she thought she should be. Even to her own detriment. I loved how she was written to always seeming to look for something, though she had already found it. I am certainly looking forward to the rest of this series!
