Reading Book 1: Battlefield Ukraine Book 2: Battlefield Korea Book 3: Battlefield Taiwan Book 4: Battlefield Pacific Book 5: Battlefield Russia Book 6: Battlefield China
All three books were fast paced, intriguing and with well drawn characters that reflected people I've met over a 35 year military career. My biggest hang up was the poor job of editing resulting in a lot of redundant wording and repeating of information.
The scenario, particularly in Korea and Taiwan, was very realistic. The use of swarm attacks and human waves has been a constant threat when dealing with the Chinese. A USSR officer once told me that the Russians most feared the Chinese because it was impossible to make enough ammunition to kill all of the soldiers they could put in the field.
One particular irritant was the misrepresentation of the effectiveness of space based sensors to track in real time what is going on. The low orbiting sensors described in the book (RORSAT and others) are only able to view the battlefield for approximately six minutes as they go from horizon to horizon. They won't see that same area for another 12 hours. Does that mean the other technical data so prevalent in the three books of the series that I have read so far are equally questionable?
Overall, I would recommend the book. I would also recommend the authors spend a little time (or money) in better editing the text.
Writing about war in the modern era is very difficult. Few have done since of well. Tom Clancy, Larry Bond, Stephen Coonts , Barrett Tillman and Harold Coyle are the standard for the genre. James Boone is now ready to take his place among them. The level of detail and the believability of the story kept me hanging by the seat of my pants. Staying neutral as a narrator is no easy feat, but neither side of this conflict is written one dimensional. It assumes both sides have their motives and both sides have intelligent and capable people. The best endorsement I can give is that I'm buying the remaining three books all at once.
Excellent read. Hard to put down. Loved all the detail in these fictional stories built around real current political issues. Especially great read for us retired military types who have had the opportunity to actual have been in many places referred in the text. Over the years I have been to Kiev and other parts of the Ukraine, also to most of the former Warsaw Pact countries, and all of the countries of Europe,so reading the first volume was exciting and a trip down memory lane. I have also spent five years in the Far East so interwoven story centering on the world issues dealing with China, Vietnam, , and Korea were a real bonus in this set. Will immediately finish up the following three volumes. Highly recommend this well written series to all.
This is a series of stories based on actual events which creates the best of stories due to the many possible outcomes. I enjoyed reading these stories, they definitely made me think.
I can’t comment enough on how great James and Miranda’s work is. This is my second read through of the series and although I thought it impossible I’ve enjoyed this read through even more than the first.
Reading this book at the time of ongoing Russia-Ukrain war, feels kind of scary. These are only first three books in the series - very fast paced story. A lot of discussion in the book feels like the current world scenarios - politically and militarily.
I found the series fascinating in light of what is happening currently in Ukraine and the South China Sea. Overall a good read and I had to read the rest of the series to complete the entire story.
Alternate military history is my bag. I liked these books alot. The scenarios are good and the research into the weapon systems appears to be spot on. The only problem I have is that at times it doesn't seem to flow and it reads as if someone quite young has written it, as long as you don't let It bother you too much, it's fine It certainly improves throughout the series. Well worth a go, recommended
