USA TODAY Bestselling Author Misty Evans is celebrating her 100th published novel in 2025. She loves writing urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and mystery/suspense. Under her pen name, Nyx Halliwell, she also writes supernatural cozy mysteries.
When not reading or writing (which is most of the time), she enjoys music, movies, and hanging out with her husband, twin sons, and three spoiled rescue dogs. She’s a crafter at heart and has far too many projects to finish.
One thing I love about books is being taken away to a world that I know nothing about. In Risk by Misty Evans, we are whisked away to Tennessee to spend time with superstars, royalty, and a few villains. But, have no fear, because Rock Star Security sends Noah, one of the newest of the their bunch along with his older brother Asher (who lightens up every scene), to guard Silent Risk, a royal horse, and on yeah, Noah gets to face the woman he proposed marriage to many years ago. Fun times!
I love Evans' imagination when it comes to her plots. They are unique, fun, and rarely take you in the direction you would expect. She does a fabulous job of intricately weaving in several plot lines together and tying them all up at the end with this one. Risk gives us a taste of what it is like to have horses and service staff! The interesting characters Evans writes are so interesting that I want to meet them all! In Risk, I adored the way Jena saw the good in people and Noah was the opposite. Their romance was a sweet one to watch but I found myself "talking" to Noah often. He just needed a little extra help I thought. I am glad it turned out the way it did. They are a powerful couple.
In addition to the adventurous story and lovable hero and heroine, I really liked seeing Beatrice handle everything she does so effortlessly. Asher brought humor to the story and I always like to see Zeb in action. He is great! I am looking forward seeing what comes of the little seeds Evans planted that elude to future stories with a new project headed up by the President. If you like romantic suspense stories, give Risk a read. It is sure to entertain you from beginning to end!
LOVED this book!!! This is a quickly moving story that has Noah facing his past and the girl that got away. When he is forced to work for her grandfather, guarding a horse of all things, he is not happy. However, he resigns himself to doing a good job, only to learn that the situation is far more complicated than anyone knew.
This is an engaging mystery/suspense with lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing. Wrapped within that is a wonderful second chance love story.
If you are a mystery/thriller or romance fan, then this is a must read. Fans of the genre will love this book. Put this one at the top of your TBR list. While this is part of a series, this is a stand alone novel, however, it's so good that you really owe it to yourself to read them all.
Once again, Ms Evans gives us a story that is not only engaging, but is also thought provoking. This time , the story belongs to Noah Pierce. A former Navy SEAL now a member Rock Star Security who is still suffering from the months while being tortured in captivity . Jena DuMont, his former girlfriend and a pop star, has not forgotten him. She has come to question her decision of not marrying him. When her grandfather’s prized horse is threatened, he hires Rock Star Security and specifically Noah, to be the horse’s bodyguard. That’s when they both have to deal with their past and how they still feel for each other. While the story is filled with intrigue, whodunit, and rekindled romance, it’s more than that. It’s a reminder that those brave men and women who place their lives in danger so we can be safe and live in a free country, frequently return home with not only physical injuries ,but also psychological ones. As a nation we need to not only honor them , but also give them all our support and resources to return to a life filled with a productive future and support. For that, thank you , Ms Evans. Misty Evans has done it again with Risk, a wonderful story full of courage and second chances.
Noah and Jena have been through a lot together and more during the past 4 years apart, but can they both let go of mistakes they have made to build a new future together?
Noah is a great character, he is a bit damaged, totally gorgeous in so many ways and he is loyal to a fault, I really loved this character he was strong and vulnerable all at the same time.
Jena is not your typical rock/movie star she seems more of a girl next door even though she loves being on stage singing as soon as the song is over she is happy to curl up at home and write songs. Jena is stubborn and sweet, she has always regretted letting Noah get away but this time she is determined to get her man back and keep him forever no matter what.
I loved this story for the main characters but also because of the hints toward future books oh and I'm really looking forward to Ash's story, it was great to see Queen B at her very best I just love her what a boss.
As usual, stories from Misty Evans sucked you in from the beginning, and this one was no exception. I got to feel the places I’ve never been, scenes I’ve never experienced, and felt it so real. The world building was extraordinary.
I have to admit that second chance romance was not my favourite, there’s always baggage came with it that they had to solve it first while also dealing with current situation. However, I always able to tolerate and quite enjoy second chance romance in RS genre because there was the suspense part, especially when the suspense was as great as this book. Jena and Noah had to face their past while navigating the security problems occurred, both to the prized horse and to Jena.
All in all, an enjoyable read, one I put down only because I have to do some adult thing such as earning my pay check.
I was provided a complementary copy by the author / publisher, but this in no way influenced my thoughts or opinions.
Noah and Jena have known each other since they were kids, and fell in love during their long friendship. Both knew they were meant to be together, but circumstances had Jena making a huge sacrifice, breaking her heart and his in the process. She knew Noah was destined for great things, that he wanted to be a SEAL, and didn't want to stand in his way. Yes, she'd handled his previous deployments, but never knowing where he was, when he'd be back, or if he would, took a toll on her. Add in that he seemed to be able to freeze out anything he didn't want her to know, seeming to keep himself apart while she gave her all, and she chose to let him go, returning his engagement ring and destroying both of them.
Now Jena, a former pop star, needs help. Well, not for her but for her grandfather's piece of mind and the safety of his prized horse. After agreeing to hire the best, which would be Noah's employer, Jena takes the first step to bringing Noah back into her life.
Noah, a former SEAL and recent hire of Rock Star Security, immediately refuses the assignment, not wanting to see the woman who rejected him. Yes, he knows he still loves her and always will, but seeing her again will be too hard. Not even his brother, Asher, knows the step they'd taken toward a future together, one she'd returned. He agrees, knowing this could bring the closure he needs and not wanting to let his new employer down. He knows they took a chance on him and with the anniversary of his time as a prisoner of war drawing near, the job will give him something to focus on instead.
The second Noah and Jena are even in the same vicinity, both know it, their hearts calling out to one another. But the past is still between them, tainting what could be. However, it doesn't take long for them to be drawn to each other like the magnets they've always been, nor for Noah to realize someone is after Jena too.
Noah knows he'd do anything to protect Jena, and win her heart again, but things aren't always as they seem and secrets are revealed on both sides as are possible motives to hurt Jena.
Can Noah complete his actual assignment and keep Jena safe at the same time? Is Jena the only one in danger? What happens when Noah discovers he wasn't told everything about why he was chosen for this job? Can Noah and Jena let go of the hurt from before and move forward? Will they realize they were always meant to be together? Is a HEA possible?
One-click now and follow along as two people are reunited due to dangerous circumstances and realize the love they always had is still there, and stronger than ever.

Nothing Misty Evans writes is ordinary. Warm, wonderful, hot and dangerous, yes; typical second chance romance? No way. Ms. Evans has once again created a world that pulls in the reader with a fantastic story line and an unforgettable romance. Jenna is an actress, a country singer/songwriter, and a true country girl. There are few things that she really wants out of life. A chance to sing again, safety for her grandfather, and a chance to make things right with Noah. Noah is an ex-SEAL, you know what they say about that, and part of Rock Star Security. Babysitting a horse might not seem like the toughest job in town but for Noah, returning to the world in which he grew up is almost as painful as dealing with PTSD and the memory that his mess-up had terrible consequences. If Noah doesn’t steal your heart, no one can.
Suspenseful! Exciting! Great story line full of strength and courage, along with some unique characters. I couldn't put this book down as Noah tries to keep everyone safe from harm, solve the mystery and re-kindle his love for Jena. Non stop action from the start, a must read.

I’m a huge fan of second chance romances and love my romantic suspense, put them together and add them to the world of the SEALs of Shadow Force that Misty Evans has created, and I knew I would be in for another fabulous read.
Noah is still a bit broken – from not only the torture he endured as a prisoner of an evil terrorist, but also the heartbreak he suffered when Jena walked away from him. He’s trying to heal, and with the help of his brother and his “family” at SFI, he’s starting to put the pieces of his life back together. When an assignment finds him face to face with Jena again I wasn’t sure how he would react – and once again Misty Evans did a superb job of showing Noah’s struggle with his emotions and feelings and weaving them into the story.
Jena was what I would call an eternal optimist. She always sees the best in people and never wants to believe that anyone would want to cause her or those she loves any harm – and kudos to Evans for writing a character that might have ended up TSTL (too stupid to live) and transforming her into a strong heroine who never loses that belief that there is good out there.
One of my favorite things about this series is getting to spend some time with Beatrice and the other characters of SFI – and being a huge Queen B fan, it was fun to watch her work behind the scenes to make things happen. Although the cast of characters is large in the SFI world, Evans always manages to bring in just the right amount of characters to offer support and add to the current story without adding any distractions.
As usual, Evans builds a world that is engaging and entertaining, weaving characters and settings together to provide the backdrop to both the romance and the suspense. There are plenty of twists in the plot to keep things interesting, and I just loved the little bits that were woven into the story that gave some foreshadowing to what might be coming next.
I’m a big fan of this series and Misty Evans – and would highly recommend this one!
While I liked Jena and Noah (second chance romance FTW!), loved watching Queen B in action as always, and the "whodunit" aspect of the story kept me guessing, Risk isn't going to be my hands-down favorite of the series. There was a bit more waffling than felt necessary throughout--are they back together, or aren't they? Will Jena and Noah continue on their current career paths, or choose a path that will allow them to go forward together more easily? Just when I thought they'd decided, it became clear that these questions were up in the air again, and it was frustrating at times.
Still, there were more individual bits here that I liked than ones than I didn't. Jena and Noah were good together, and I enjoyed their interactions with many of the secondary characters as well. (Ash and Kaitlyn? There must be a book there, surely! ;)) The HEA felt well-earned, and though I was sure that things weren't exactly as they seemed throughout the suspense plot, I didn't have it all figured out before the truth was revealed. Better yet, Ms. Evans appears to be setting us up for yet another spin-off series--with spies, nonetheless!--which will definitely have me haunting her website to see when the first book will be released. (Not until 2019, according to the back of this book. Here's to hoping the time will fly between now and then!)
Rating: 3 1/2 stars / C+

Misty always writes great action in her books and this one was no exception. Risk is book seven in the SEALs of Shadow Force series. This book is about Noah a former SEAL who has some dangerous enemies from his past and Jena a country singer turned actress who now just wants to write her music and help her grandpa run his horse ranch. Jena has her own problems like a dangerous stalker and a former co-star that just doesn't seem to want to take no for an answer. When Jena has to call on Noah to help guard her grandpa's prized horse, she has her doubts but contacts Shadow Force and requests Noah handle the job personally. Noah wants nothing to do with guarding a horse, let alone see Jena again. But his assignment is not negotiable so back to his hometown he goes. When Noah gets to Jena's grandpas' farm he finds all kind of things wrong with security, but nothing wrong with Jena. Which could be a big problem. Things on the farm go from bad to worse and one of the most dangerous enemies that could possibly turn up raises his head and puts a price on Noahs. This book has so much action it is one you will have a hard time putting down. Noah and Jena are wonderfully written as are the other characters in the book. Shadow Force books never let me down, they have the right balance of action, twists and romance to not only hold my interest but to leave me always wanting more.
This is the 7th book in the series. The first series I’m reading by this author. I would recommend reading Southern California Violent Crimes Taskforce (SCVC) series first to understand some of the references and connections among the team.
The heroine has known the hero since childhood as he’s her brother’s best friend. She’s always had a crush on him but knew nothing could become of it. When he proposes growing up, she has to turn him down, but this time she needs him for her safety because one of her fans is after her.
Our hero has always loved the heroine and her turning down his proposal didn’t diminish his feelings. If anything, it cemented she was the only one for him but knew she was better off without him. Now she needs him and he can’t say no and only wants her happy.
The plot is great and keeps you guessing, although you do get a sense of who it is and who it isn’t. The poor hero is investigating so many areas. Most of us would go nuts from it. Horse, songs, his ex-girlfriend and her family are just a few. The story explains both point of views of the heroine and hero’s relationship which is interesting.
Good storyline, although I wouldn’t have put as many things to investigate into the story because it expanded it too much for the hero to actually accomplish to be believable.
OMG! This is a FANTASTIC story! The beginning was intriguing where Noah did not want to take the assignment that Beatrice had given him as he would be seeing the woman who rejected his marriage proposal. Jena has regretted saying no to Noah when he proposed and she was bound to get him back. The assignment was to guard a horse but Jena was also in danger and the end chapters became edge of your seat drama. We find out who was terrorizing Jena. Once the threat was eliminated, Noah decided to leave as he felt like he didn't deserve Jena. Jena felt even more guilty because she knew she was the one who caused his demons. The last chapter had Jena proposing to Noah. It was an interesting situation. I am happy these two finally found their happily ever after. FANTASTIC job Misty! I would highly recommend this book.
"Risk" is the seventh book in the SEALs of Shadow Force series and it is a fantastic addition to the series. This is the story of Noah Pierce and Jenavieve DuMont, once upon a time Noah wanted to marry Jena, but she turned him down. Now the former SEAL has been called on to protect her grandfathers prize horse, but when Noah gets there he realizes that the horse in not the only thing that needs protecting. No matter what Noah will protect Jena from harm and everyone is suspect until they are ruled out. Jena has to wonder if she made a mistake when she turned Noah down and now is her time to right that wrong, that is if her stalker doesn't get to her first. This one is loaded with suspense, mystery, romance, passion, friends and a second chance at forever!
Another winner by Misty Evan!. I was hooked right from the beginning. This was action packed with something going on at every turn. I enjoy trying to figure out who the bad guy is and I'm proud of myself because I suspected the person early on. Though the why was a great twist. Misty did another bang up job on the characters. I was so invested in their story and I always enjoy the previous characters making cameos. This has a second chance romance going on. I always like the couple get their shot at their meant to be HEA. I can't wait for the next book!
A second time around book filled with intrigue, suspense, and of course romance. Noah Pierce is sent to protect a horse his former love Jena’s grandfather owns. Can he overcome his heartbreak and put his mind into the job? Misty Evans has really written a spellbinding read that has you wondering from start to finish if there could be a HEA. Be sure and have enough time to read it as you won’t want to put it down until you read the final word.
What a great book! The plot was really good and multi-layered. I absolutely adored the romance portion of the book but the spy intrigue and the launch of a new division for Beatrice is fantastic! I cannot wait to see what happens next. Bravo Misty you rocked it! Write On! 2019 seems so far away! But I am excited for what ever is next for you.
Another perfect mixture of adventure, mystery and romance. Misty has done it again! The assignments are always interesting and challenging (physically and emotionally) and I especially love the ending!
It about drove me nuts trying to figure out who done! But the mystery and romance omg! Loved it!!!! Just like all her books good 👍good read always! Love 💘 story wow !Hot! Always anxious for next meeting!!!!!!!! Can't wait til next book!!!!
I can't believe this one. It really rocked my world it was so good. If you haven't read this series you absolutely must if sexy men and women who are also smart are your thing.
Yet again an amazing and addictive story which I loved. There was lots of action, lots of mystery and just the right amount of romance. I highly recommend this.
