Leigh Duncan is an Amazon best-selling author and a National Readers' Choice Award winner, the author of more than two dozen novels, novellas and short stories. However, the biggest thrill of her career--so far!--came when she saw her book, Journey Back to Christmas, featured on the Home and Family Show after Hallmark Publishing chose Journey to introduce its new line of romance novels. Her newest Hallmark Publishing release, A Simple Wedding, and her upcoming A Cottage Wedding (6/2/20) are the first of several books in Leigh's Heart's Landing series. These sweet, contemporary romances take place in a small town known as America's Top Wedding Destination, and each book centers on one couple who fall in love in Heart's Landing.
I love Hallmark movies and I really love the Hallmark books. They are so much better than the movies. Christmas in March was a great getaway from all the mess going on in the world right now. The perfect hot cocoa read. I devoured this fast read in no time. I HIGHLY recommend this 5 star read. Don't wait until Christmas to read this one. Grab your copy now. The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required and all views expressed are our own.
I'd seen the film through Hallmark last year and loved it because it was unique and whimsical. This book brought the film even more to life, and I loved how I could picture everything so well! The writing style is lovely, and it was wonderful to see into the heads of each characters.
Usually I'm not a fan of time travel stories, but this one wasn't as bogged down with the "what-ifs" as others I've come across. There's a lot of focus on miracles, and so the comet is presented as a miracle in Hanna's life.
Even better, I loved the theme of the story. That every choice we make does make a difference, and it took Hanna traveling to 2016 to see that. This is a clean book, with a couple mentions of praying one mention of Moses, and of going to church. Even the romance is extremely light--only forehead kissing before marriage. Every character was unique, and Jake's trust in Hanna was really sweet.
I loved how everything came together in this book and I highly recommend the book and movie :) Good for ages 14/15+
Note: there are a few euphemisms used throughout.

I was drawn to this book in part by the cover which features a young woman with her hair done in a style from the forties. I am very interested in stories that connect in some way to the Second World War, and Hanna Morse, the main character in this story has just that connection - a young nurse who at the end of war is grieving the loss of her husband and trying to find some reason to go on. Set just before Christmas when the whole town around her is celebrating, Hanna just wants to dwell in her misery but she still has kind thoughts for her patients and a desire to do what is right even at personal cost. In the process of one such good deed, Hanna is caught outside in a terrible snowstorm having slid her car into a ditch. At risk of losing her life from hypothermia, she makes her way into a shed where she shelters as a comet streaks across the sky. Next thing she knows she is awake in her home town, same but so very different. Little does she realize that she is now in 2016.
This book reminded me in many ways of the movie "It's A Wonderful Life" with a touch of the Wizard of Oz thrown in for good measure. I haven't seen the actual Hallmark movie that it is based on but really enjoyed the positive outlook this story showed me. Hanna discovers that people are kind no matter what year it is and she also learns that in the small things she has done, she has had a huge impact on the lives of many. One small stone has ripples that reach out beyond what she can see.
I was a little surprised by the story and how it progressed but the title should have forewarned me. This is a feel good book with a happy ever after ending and no graphic scenes or language. It's a very good book to curl up with and read on a cold night.
When you think of a Hallmark movie, you think of something heartwarming, sweet, and a bit sappy. Apparently, that also applies to Hallmark books as well! I haven’t seen the movie, so I can’t say how true the book is to the movie (ha, it’s funny saying it that way for a change!).
Hanna was quite sweet and positive, even when dealing with the overwhelming grief of her first Christmas as a war widow. But, as she tells her friend, “Nothing ever gets solved by blubbering” - I’m guessing this sort of attitude was very prominent during the war years. Though she works as a nurse at the local hospital, with her husband dead and her hopes of starting a family gone, she feels lost and without a purpose in life. Of course, as the blurb says, events happen that lead to her waking up in 2016. Even having jumped 71 years in the future, Hanna still manages to be upbeat, and in trying to be kind and helpful to the family of the cop who takes her in, ends up spreading even more cheer than she realizes.
“You know what I do when I’m sad?… I try to help somebody else who’s sad.”
As for cons, it’s very predictable, and the characterizations, besides Hanna, are cardboard cutouts. Loving parents, cute niece, suspicious divorced sister - that’s basically what they are. All the conflict, including the “will Hanna ever get home or not?” plot, is quite tame. But honestly, this is a lovely bit of escapist fluff, so it seems disingenuous to judge it too harshly for not pretending to be anything else.
Overall, heartwarming and sweet, with a lovely reminder that acts of kindness can have more far-reaching consequences than you’d think possible. Perfect for curling up with some hot cocoa and gingerbread on a lazy holiday afternoon.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review.
I enjoy time travel stories, so when this was aired first in 2016 it was a rare Hallmark Christmas movie I wanted to see. I'm glad I did, so when I saw the book based on the film I brought it. It basically followed the film, the only real change was the addition of a scene six months later which revealed what happened to Hanna and Chet after her return to 1945, a rather far fetched story about them becoming expatriates, moving to France and buying a winery. The epilogue also shows what happened to some characters Hanna met in 2016. I wish it would have explored if Toby's memories had changed after Hanna's return. Time travel stories are tricky, even in a fantasy like this. Still, the film and book did a fairly good job. One point the book made that really wasn't covered by the film was that Hanna's memory of 2016 lingered, but as a dream she had. A well written and easy to read book, I highly recommend to fans of time travel as well as Hallmark movies.
This book is just like a Hallmark movie – it is sweet and clean with absolutely no cursing and no sex, so if those things are off-putting to you, there is no worry here.
If you have watched Journey Back To Christmas on Hallmark, this book follows that movie perfectly. Other than there being a deeper look into the thoughts and emotions of the characters, there is no glaring differences between the two right up until the very end. There is an epilogue in this book that I *wish* had been a part of the movie because it is absolutely beautiful. I have seen the movie more times than I will ever admit and I still got all kinds of warm-fuzzies reading this because it is such a great story and that epilogue made me sigh happily.
For those who haven't seen the movie, this is a story about a young war widow who gets transported from the 1940's to 2016 via strange circumstances when a “Christmas comet” passes over her town. I know that sounds like a premise that really should not work, but it definitely does. Hanna's life in 1945 is far more imperfect than she would ever admit, but the young nurse is making the best of her tough breaks, but when she winds up stranded in a snow storm because of her need to do a good deed, the last thing she expects is to wake up to find herself in a completely different world. With the help of Police Officer Jake Sutton, his family, and the “exceedingly” eccentric Tobias Cook, Hanna slowly unravels the miraculous circumstances behind her time-traveling and is given hope that returning to her real life might just be possible.
Anyone who has seen the movie will enjoy this companion book (and that epilogue!), but even if you haven't seen it and you just want to read a Christmas-based book that will make you feel and just might make you believe in Christmas miracles, you should read this book.
As a huge Hallmark fan, I hope that these “companion books” will become a regular thing because that little extra emotion we get from being in a character's head rather than just watching it play out on screen is something that I really enjoyed.
I requested and was very generously granted an ARC of this book via NetGalley and the publisher. I was under no obligation to write this review, I did so because I loved the book.
*I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I huge thank you to the publisher and NetGalley!*
I’m obsessed with Hallmark Christmas movies. Like, they’re pretty much the only thing I’ve watched since November 1st! 😂 So, when I saw there were books inspired by Hallmark movies, I had to check them out! Journey Back to Christmas was my favorite Hallmark premiere last year, so I was very intrigued to check out the book.
The book reads just like a Hallmark movie. Which is exactly what I was hoping for. The atmosphere is cozy and Christmas-y. I really enjoyed the plot, too. Journey Back to Christmas is not your typical Hallmark movie, and I love that the book really showcased that and expanded on it. I really loved the time travel aspect. It was simple, without scientific explanation, but really well done.
I found myself really connecting to all the characters. For the book, we were able to get to know more about the characters and how they felt than in the movie, which was really nice.
Another thing I loved about Journey Back to Christmas was the ending. While the movie has a good ending, it really doesn’t explain a lot. I loved that the book tied up some loose ends, and added quite a bit of clarity. It was really nice to see how things turned out for everyone!
Overall, Journey Back to Christmas is a sweet and enjoyable Christmas read. The writing definitely isn’t the greatest, but it isn’t terrible either. It is sweet and simple; just like a Hallmark movie. This book will definitely appeal to fans of Hallmark movies, and I think anyone looking for a fun and festive story will enjoy Journey Back to Christmas!
I am an avid Hallmark fan, and when it comes to their Christmas movies, I watch them and often enjoy the vast majority of them. I remember when this film came out last year (2016), and I was wondering how much my family and I would enjoy it. I had no problem with time travel, but sometimes my mom is not too keen on it. But thankfully all of us loved it!
When I discovered that Leigh Duncan wrote a novelization of this film, I was thrilled! I was a bit unsure when I read my first Hallmark book ("Love You LIke Christmas), but I knew this one was going to be fantastic. I had never read anything by Leigh, so I went in expecting to relive a favorite Christmas film, and that is exactly what happened.
Because I had seen the movie, I knew the story, but Leigh wrote in such a way that took me deeper with the various characters, and I loved getting to read more about some of the backstories and the thoughts going through their minds. I actually wish the book would have been longer and examined the characters even more (especially the romance between the characters in 2016), but that is just a personal preference. My only complaint is that the book was a bit too short, but that is something that possibly could not be helped, and Leigh herself may not have had control over that. I also would have loved an expanded epilogue with more about Hanna and Chet, but perhaps it made more sense to end things in the present.
Regardless, Leigh's style matched the movie quite well, and I look forward to reading more of her works, Hallmark or not, in the future. I'm glad Hallmark has connected me with a fantastic author, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christmas romances!
Based on a Hallmark movie, Journey Back to Christmas is a heartwarming tale sprinkled with a touch of magic. Hanna is a touching character who finds herself stranded during a snowstorm in 1945. The next morning, the strangest thing happens to her: she ends up in an odd version of her hometown in 2016! Can she really be traveling through time? Or is it just a vivid dream? As the story unfolds around her quest toward the truth, she can count on the help of a kind policeman, his family and even a mysterious library owner whom she may know from her “past”!
What I really liked about this book? It is not your typical Christmas feel-good story; the two timelines add an extra layer of depth to the intrigue. The female lead, Hanna, is trying to find her way back home (to another time!), all the while learning an important life lesson: even ordinary people can have a tremendous impact on the lives of others around. I thought it was a nice, refreshing move from the more traditional narrative we’re used to in this genre.
Journey Back to Christmas is a sweet, lovely story conveying a beautiful message about core values. Love, family, friendship and the importance of small, but meaningful acts.
Although it is set at Christmas time, I believe you can easily treat yourself to a fun, light read like this one all year round!
“Journey Back to Christmas” by Leigh Duncan is a book based on the Hallmark Channel Original Movie. I am usually not one for paranormal stories, but this one was right up my alley. It brought a WW II widow from the 1940’s to contemporary time. You can imagine the awe with which all the electronic, medical, and cultural changes were viewed by Hanna Morse as she finds herself in her hometown, but in the future. Not only was she out of step in her manner, her clothes, her speech, but those around her were suspicious and fearful of her.
I thought that the story evolved quite understandably for a paranormal presentation. I also thought that this is a good Christmas story to share. It brings together all the things that make Christmas what it is and makes one long for the Christmases of long ago, where there was not so much commercialism and more time spent with family. Loved the book!
I received a complimentary Kindle copy of this book from NetGalley.com in return for posting a review. You can read this review on my blog at https://wp.me/p2pjIt-sW. Check out other book reviews at http://imhookedonbooks.wordpress.com.
I loved this Christmas movie when it debuted last year on the Hallmark Channel so I was very excited to learn of the ebook based on the movie. If you enjoyed the movie you will enjoy the book. It will leave you feeling warm and happy.
The book does expand in some areas more than the book but the book stays true to the movie (words I have never uttered before). You love the characters even more after reading the book. Hanna is a nurse in 1945 mourning the loss of her husband Chet. A blizzard is starting to hit the town on December 22 which is the same night as a comet is to cross the sky. As Hanna is settling in for the night a lost dog wonders up to her house and sets off a chain of events that sends her the year of 2016. As Hanna is trying to figure out if she will ever return to her life she learns how her life of caring has affected others in ways she never dreamed.
As always I suggest reading the book then watch the movie. You will be in the Christmas spirit at the end of both.
Thank you to NetGalley and Crown Media Holdings for a copy to read in exchange for a review based on my own thoughts and put into my own words.
The movie actually made me cry, smile and laugh - was so very good that I went out and bought the Kindle version of the story so that I could read it whenever I wanted and not just when Hallmark wanted to show it ---"WWII is finally over, but Hanna’s husband, Chet, didn't return home. She puts on a brave smile during the day while nursing her hospital patients, but at night, she grieves the loss of her love. Then the Christmas Comet appears for the first time in over seventy years, and Hanna's caught in a snowstorm and knocked unconscious. Thanks to Netgalley for giving me this book to read in exchange for an honest review. No compensation was given, offered, or taken to alter the opinion.
This is my third Hallmark book and it definitely didn't disappoint! This story was not your typical Hallmark love story. In fact, the main boy and girl characters that the story followed were from different time periods and in love with other people. This book is all about Christmas miracles. Who doesn't love a story about that? It was also, about how even small stones can make a huge ripple. As a huge Hallmark fan, I hope that these books will become more of a regular thing because I love being able to get inside of a character's head, I love all the extra information you get in a book, and I love being able to use my imagination rather than just watching it on tv. I totally recommend this book for fans of Hallmark movies or Christmas stories.
Based on a Hallmark Movie, Journey Back to Christmas tells the story of Hanna. She is a nurse in the 1940's who finds herself stuck in a snow storm and takes refuge in a shack. When she wakes up the next morning, though, she has been transported somehow to 2016. She meets a kind cop named Jake who sets out to solve the mystery of where she came from.
I watched the movie when it was on TV and enjoyed it as the story was different than most of the Christmas movie fare. I think that did take away some of my enjoyment in reading the book though, as I kept comparing the two.
The plot moves at a fairly quick pace and keeps the same wholesomeness and sweetness that seem to be trademarks of a Hallmark story. It was nice, too, that you get both Hanna and Jake's perspectives, and that both feel that family, friends, and tradition are important.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I love Hallmark which is why I was very excited to learn that they were putting out a new line of books based off my favorite movies. This one read like the movie, giving a little more insight to the characters.
Hanna has time-traveled. How? Well, she doesn't know exactly? All she knows is she ran into a barn to escape a snow storm and came out of the barn 75 years into the future with no clue on how to get back home.
This book is appropriate for all readers. If you love Hallmark, you'll love this.
I received an ARC copy from netgalley for my honest review, so thank you netgalley and publishers for offering me this book! ♡ I've haven't seen the hallmark movie but I definitely plan to after reading the book. I love hallmark movies and I found the book to be just as wonderful as the movies. This story was heartwarming, as I expected and the perfect read for the holiday season. This was my first book by this author, however I did enjoy it. It was fast paced and just alltogether an easy read. I give this book a 5 star rating!
I'm very big fan and black hole who sucks Hallmark movies in and I'm reading books since I was 7. So when I get to know that Hallmark movies are now books too, I was over the moon because I will love to cherish the same story in one of my more favourite versions and I really did.
I loved the book version more, sorry movies! But the way book is written is quite beautiful and really loved it. I loved the characters more in comparison of the movie.
Really looking forward for more Hallmark Movies to be converted to books.
I am an unabashed fan of Hallmark movies, so to see that they are being brought to life in book form was just the icing on the cake for me. Thank you, Hallmark!
This was a lovely, sweet and perfectly escapist festive tale. I enjoyed seeing Hanna come to grips with modern life and how her gentle ways had an effect on those she met. Whimsical, yet not fluffy, this is definitely one to read if you enjoy Hallmark movies.
Two love stories from two different time periods. I didn't think this was your typical Hallmark movie/book - it was much better. Sometimes Hallmark - in my opinion - can be too sappy and too easily lead to a hea. This book had real life stories as well as romance. Hanna had such a great attitude about her loss of her husband and traveling to the future. Loved Toby. A really sweet book that tugs at your heart. Now I want to see the movie. I received this book from netgalley.
Journey Back to Christmas reads just like a Hallmark Christmas movie. It is sweet and predictable. The reader knows the story has to end happily ever after, and it is such a pleasant, feel good ride from beginning to end. When I finished I wanted to know more about the characters in the book.
I received an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley.
Journey Back to Christmas is a heartwarming book based on a Hallmark Channel Original Movie written by author Leigh Duncan. Loved the characters and the storyline which are touched with a bit of whimsy and magic. Thanks to NetGalley and Hallmark Publishing for the advance copy.
This was a really sweet book that embodies the movie that was shown on Hallmark perfectly. I love the message this book sends about what the true meaning of Christmas is. I also loved that this isn't your usual romance.
This book was delightful. A young, married nurse, whose husband is serving in WWII, wakes up to find herself suddenly in 2016. She's just the same as she was in 1945, clothing and everything! It's a very cute story about learning about the future and trying to get back to her present.
Glad I bought this house instead of getting it from the library so I can read every year. It does not disappoint and i love being able to act out the story in my head despite how many times I've seen the movie.
A sweet but predictable story about a woman who accidentally travels through time, and is desperate to return to her life. If you enjoy happily-ever after books that take place during the Christmas season, you will enjoy this one!
