Heart pounding, dark YA supernatural thriller with a dash of horror and romance.
In Candela’s world, orphans are traded like cards, but their significance is far less valuable. Candela’s miserable life alters when she discovers the ghost-witch can fulfill her most desperate desire. But the ghost-witch is a dealer of souls, and her currency is death.
She must cross the Wugarbe desert in order to reach the witch, but only fools and the dead venture there. She pays mysterious, wandering gunslinger, Pic, to ferry her across, and the two embark on the most perilous adventure of their lives.
Death stalks close behind them in the form of chief gang lord, Faro, whose obsession with Candela drives him on a mad chase across the desert to bring her back under his control.
Who will reach them first, Faro, the supernatural creatures of the desert or the ghost-witch? They may need a miracle to survive.
I adored the story of Candela's revenge. Despite being an apocalyptic-feeling future, it still resonated with me.
Story aside, the writing could have used an editor. There are a number of homophone issues, the wrong forms of your/you're and to/too for example. Additionally words used incorrectly, as though the author knew the word from hearing it, not seeing it used in context. These issues are the only thing keeping this from being a solid 5 stars.
I personally struggled to get into the book. I found the middle and ending to be quite exciting. This book requires me to do a second read without interruptions.
This was an enjoyable read. I liked the main characters and their interaction. There is a good mix of action/suspense and character connections. I would definitely recommend this book to others.
