A frustrated journalist. An abrasive internet sensation. Desire even enemies can’t deny. Jeff Taylor is a cable news juggernaut with an ax to grind—particularly with the media industry that made him. After a tough interview with Kile Avery, online troll extraordinaire, Jeff melts down on air and tells the world just what he thinks of the media machine. He’s swiftly fired and blacklisted by every major media organization… except one. NewSpin—the same fluff media company that Jeff most blames for the current state of journalism—wants to hire him to do a piece on Avery. “Avery’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I’d sooner live under a bridge than work with him.” Kile Avery is a viral blogger who thinks love and traditional media are dead. He’s built an online empire quickly by posting scathing video takedowns. So when Kile’s approached by NewSpin for a documentary series on his meteoric rise to fame, he can’t say no… even if Jeff Taylor is the reporter assigned to the project. “When we started this, I wanted to destroy Taylor. Now I just want to sleep with him.” The two have nothing in common save for their mutual hatred, but they quickly discover they share real chemistry on and off camera—chemistry neither of them wants to admit to, privately or publicly. Can they set aside their differences and come together to make a ratings hit? Or is their story destined to become yet another clickbait headline? Clickbait is the first book in a series of lighthearted and witty M/M romance novels that can all be read as a stand-alone or as part of the series. If you like political backdrops, witty banter, and steamy enemies-to-lovers stories, then you’ll love this first installment in the Off the Record series. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed HEA. Buy Clickbait to get the cameras rolling on Jeff and Kile today!
Garett Groves is a new M/M romance author based in Southwest Florida. There he enjoys spending time with his husband and their two cats. Their hobbies include: being disgustingly codependent, sleeping, eating junk food, and drinking copious amounts of red wine. Sadly, their cats don't share in the wine drinking--yet!
Oh how I wish we could do half stars. But as we can not DNF = 1*
This was so poorly written that no matter how I tried I could not continue reading. There were editing issues of course. There were leaps in logic and timeline errors. The writing was painful to read. And I loathed one of the main characters and did not buy the other one. I need to remember to think many many times before attempting anything else by this author.
If i could give this .5 stars ,I would. I think another reviewer labeled it as not reflecting realistic portrayals. i would add that its also not logical. Everything from the MC hatred of each other, the point of the blog, why Jeff lost his job, and how Kile was the victim seemed like utter bullshit to me. I do not tend to rate very low scores , so for me to give this a 1 is a big deal. Dont waist your time reading this book.
I'm not sure how can make a "lighthearted and witty M/M romance novel" with a character who's a professional online troll who says horrible things to female journalists on air. So completely not for me.
This was an entertaining and sexy read about two journalists with profoundly different points of view and political ideologies. This a classic story of opposites attract, complete with juicy public scandal, serious professional rivalry, steamy sexual tension and a satisfying ending.
This is a freely given advance review of Clickbait. So Jeff and Kile. They are two polar opposites on the same platform. Kile is an anti-love media star, Jeff is a well established news anchor of a large production company CNN. Things really get going when Kile pushes Jeff to explode on national TV, leading them to a precarious working situation that fans the flames of their relationship.
I have to say I had some issues getting through this, hence the late review. There was just something about the events that unfolded in the story that didn't click with me. Don't get me wrong, this a good May/December enemies to lovers story, it's just something about it that didn't take off well.
Kile and Jeff are coerced into doing a documentary on Kile after Jeff's career blows up in smoke. Like any current enemies, things are rough and they fight a lot. Kile's romantic cynicism roots itself in being cheated on in a past relationship. And of course like any romance there's little things that lead them to falling in love with each other, but in the first 60% or so of this book I didn't really get where these feelings suddenly came from. Once Jeff kissed Kile, it's like Kile sees god or something and has the most earth-shattering revelation about love and relationships, which I find hard to believe is possible.
When scandal hits at the revelation of their relationship, that's kinda where it gets more interesting and angsty with Lee. Lee is the bad guy in the story, for a lot of reasons, but I feel like he was a character of plot convenience without being an actual key part of the story. If so we'd have seen more of him after he got caught and found out about everything he's done.
The overall romantic element of this is really sweet and steamy. It goes to absolute mush when Kile and Jeff make up, which I appreciate very much because I love that sort of thing. I liked the story overall, but it was a bit of a chore to get through the first part because it didn't have that captivating aspect in the story or characters that kept me going. But, like I said once the kiss happened, it got much better. I am excited for book 2 in the series.
Garett Groves did it again. Well, actually he did it better. I have read all of his books and all of them I liked very much. This book, however, this one I loved. It is on a different level and by far the best one he has written. His writing always was captivating and entrancing, but he managed to pick it up a notch or two, three. It had an edge to it that kept me enthralled from the first till the very last page. Garett brought Kile and Jeff to life with a depth and profoundness to their personalities that struck me. Both cocky on the verge of arrogance, ambitious and cunning, jaded by past experiences. But both men are also so vulnerable and scared, scared of feelings and falling in love. Because of that fear, they don’t trust and they don’t make the wisest decisions. That makes them the more real and human, however, and I loved them for it. You can’t get better heroes than that. I loved their banter, snarky with a lot of bite and at the same time with a tenderness that made me sigh. Even when they hated each other I felt the chemistry sizzling between them. And when they were together my Kindle was burning up. The plot is enticing and well-thought out. It showed the weal and woe of television and social media and the way they can affect people’s lives and the ruthlessness of some people for their own benefits. Luckily there are also good friends and good people working in the industry who are trustworthy and ready to have their back. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I kept rooting for the guys to come together and stay together. I was laughing, crying, angry, frustrated and everything in between and back again. The end had me melting into a puddle.
4 ½ Stars I think that, overall, this is the best book written by this author. In my opinion, he created the best of his older main characters in Jeff (40 is NOT old). He is well rounded, intelligent, settled and, once you get past his impatience, kind. He is damaged but not unrecoverable. His inability to commit to the relationship is a bit immature but, hey, how many of us are truly mature all the time? I think Kile is the 2nd best of the younger men he has written about (I still love Ryan from Salt and Pepper). He is an unashamedly impatient, self-aggrandizing diva and doesn’t care who knows it. He is a bit underhanded in the way he deals with some of the situations in the book. His immaturity is, at times, hard to brush off, but by the end of the book, I am back on his side again. Both MC’s are very human, warts and all. It’s sometimes hard to read about a character who is exhibiting some of the less savory characteristics we all strive to downplay in ourselves. There is a bit of a leap from enemies to lovers. I understand the immediate physical attraction; it's the “feelings” that had me concerned. I didn’t see the emotional connection evolve enough to justify an HEA. It was, however, proven after the “breakup” that the severing the connection was a heart-breaking experience, and both suffered greatly from it. The secondary characters were well placed and supported the story line. There are a couple of these characters who I would enjoy seeing get their HEA. The way the author wrote the antagonist so we would enjoy the suspense of wondering who it was. The revelation and disposition of the antagonist were interesting and satisfying. I just wonder if Kile can finish an interview now. Lol.
We had so many high hopes for Clickbait, but man, we struggled to finish this story. We usually really enjoy everything by Garett Groves, but Clickbait just didn’t come together for us.
So let us start with what we liked! Kyle and Jeff are enemies, they essentially hate each other, and what the pother stand for and believes in. There is a sexual tension that is palpable; they truly are enemies-to-lovers. There are some serious sparks between Kyle and Jeff and it one of the few reasons that we kept us from not finishing this book. Along with them being enemies, there is also a huge age difference between them, and that whole opposites attract is super sexy.
Even with all these good tropes, there is so much that made us scratch our head. Honestly, the story doesn’t make sense. Jeff is fired from his million dollar job, and has to take the first available position – really? Kyle runs an anti-love blog, we think, didn’t really understand the blog idea. And really the point of the project that they were working on together; following Kyle’s rise to fame, but they only went to his office once? There was confusion about what day it was, and on and on. As you can see we were confused for most the story. Clickbait is about 375 pages, not the longest book we have read, but it just felt like it dragged, and got caught up around other characters, mis-communication and co-workers plotting. It was too much.
We so wanted to love this book; May-December, enemies-to-friends, opposites attract, how could we not? But there was so much going on in this book that it left us feeling confused and unfortunately not invested in the actual romance.
I read this book as part of an arc program. I loved it! I love the story of Jeff and Kile. Kile is a shock jock who has built his reputation on his views that love and sex don't have to exclusive. Kile has been hurt in the past and now finds it is easier to say he doesn't need or want love and that it is not important to be happy. Jeff was a news anchor who was set to interview Kile and they has a complete breakdown on air, to which Jeff walked away and was then offered a job at an online agency. Jeff was offered a job and accepted before it was going to be filming a documentary about Kile. The two men hated each other and had to make the best of the situation. After listening to Kile give a speech, Jeff realized there was more to him than he first thought and wanted to explore it. This book has a lot of ups and downs and the journey the take is an emotional one. I loved Kile and his diva ways, I thought the banter between Jeff and Kile was so funny and that they had great chemistry. Jeff had so many hidden layers and I loved how he takes control when he was with Kile. The supporting characters of Dylan and Joel also add humor and friendship to the men. This was another great one and I hope this series continues and we see more of them.
I have real mixed emotions about this book. There were parts of it I really liked but there were some bits that the ridiculousness of just downright annoyed me and could have been written better. Starting very early on at the first tv interview, a lot of words were spoken to say absolutely nothing of interest or that made sense. That press conference? Ridiculous. The most respected cable tv news anchor can't communicate his reactions? Who earns $1 million per year and can't take a couple of weeks to sit low and weight up their options? The premiere. What reporter and subject of a documentary has no input or even look at the finished product? The second live stream kept mentioning "last night". Last night was Sunday, the premiere on Saturday. These are just the stand out annoyances. Am I being a bit harsh? Possibly. And I know it's fiction but when it's contemporary fiction, there must be a degree of realism and consistency and continuity are a must. It wouldn't have taken much effort to fix these things and we would have had a far better book at the end of it.
Clickbait (Off the Record Book 1) by Garett Groves This is Jeff Taylor and Kile Avery's story.
Jeff, frustrated cable news journalist, is upset with the way media industry is going. He has a real deep dislike for Kile Avery who has gotten recognized for his outrageous online posts. Kile doesn't like Jeff either and is on Jeff's cable show where Jeff has a meltdown. Due to circumstances Jeff and Kile's paths continue to cross. There is the saying "There is a fine line between hate and love." Will Jeff and Kile discover that they love each other instead of hate each other?
This is my favorite book that I have read of Garett Groves. The story caught my attention from start to finish. This is a wonderful, entertaining, story with lots of chemistry and a bit of suspense or mystery in who is really trust worthy. I loved the banter between the characters. I hope that Dylan, Joel, and even Liam get their story.
FYI, contains mature content. This is a MM romance. I am a Kindle Unlimited subscriber.
This is a complete m/m romance with a HEA. The characters are sworn enemies and both are prominent news/opinion public figures. The meltdown of one when confronted by the other. Another difference between the men is an almost 20-year age difference.
I found the characters unique and fascinating. One is older, more old-school, the younger man has a new media presence he personally built over time. All their differences clash when events (and an underhanded editor) throw the men together for a projected three week assignment.
This is when they really get closer and begin to appreciate (and lust for) each other. After they begin a romance, surreptitious photos are taken of them. These are leaked, and a furor of public interest erupts.
Feelings are hurt, and a rocky road ensues. However, the guys are able to get back together and have that HEA.
This review is dry, but the MCs are passionate - in their love and their opinions- and their sex scenes are hot.
I thought the story was well written and it pulled me right in. The story has a nice steady pace to keep the story moving along as I read the story. I never read a news/reporter/ blogger type romance book before. So it made for a very interesting read. I loved Jeff and Kile’s characters. They start off as enemies, going off on each other. Their chemistry slowly builds as they get to know each other, as they work together. Feelings start coming into play for them as time goes by. They even heated up the pages with all their steaminess going on. Heck fogged up the glasses. I love stories with the ups and down, an endings with a very happy smile on my face, that they got through it. Another great book from the author.
Got ARC book for an honest review. Thank you for sharing your book.
This book is really 4.5 stars. Overall, a well written story about opposites attracting. Jeff, a highly ranked, 40 year old cable news host explodes when Kile, a famous 28 year old vlogger, comes on his talk show. His outburst leads to public humiliation and loss of his high paying job. The only outlet that will hire him is NewSpin, a prominent Web magazine led by an unscrupulous editor, Lee. Lee convinces Jeff and Kile to do a documentary and then releases damaging information to the tabloids that jeopardizes Jeff and Kile's reputations and their relationship. Good read but a little spotty in places. Jeff seems immature, arrogant and pretty gullible for a hard hitting journalist, so I deducted half a star.
In this story everything is EXTRA: both characters are extreme in the way they live and express their feelings, the storyline has so many twists and turns, cameras and media are side characters of their own and at some points I felt like I was reading a tabloid in real life. This book includes one of the best written, hot and sweet first encounter sex scene I have read in quite some time. Just one comment: at 40 a man is NOT old! I know in the movie and press industry, this is how they are depicted, but please let's stop this wrong description: men at 40 are hot because nowadays they take care of their body and the combination with experience and knowledge just adds to their attractiveness!
I was totally into the first 40% before they hooked up. I loved the animosty between the two MCs and regardless of how over the top things were, I was buying it. Enemies to lovers is a trope I can read forever. THEN somehow they got feelings and it was all too much, too fast, and too weird. The sex felt off to me and they talked way too much about their feelings for two guys that supposedly had hard-ass/don't believe in love attitudes one chapter ago. Didn't like the tears and the internal monologues.
I'm disappointed because it could have been good.
On a side note, the age difference is only 10 years 30 and 40 years old. So not uncomfortable (for me).
Jeff Taylor has to interview Kile Avery who's a internet star! As they despise each other the interview gets heated with Jeff losing his job. Lee Noble (Newspin) offers Jeff a job. Unknown to him his first assignment is a documentary on Kile! Sparks, disagreements, passion, lust they go through them all. With the help of Dylan & Joel can they get through this? Will they put their jobs before love? I received an arc of this book in return for an honest review
MM. Enemies to lovers & May/ December. Both men are in the limelight but at opposite ends of the spectrum, with one "traditional" and the other believing love is a hoax. They are thrown together for work and both played by a third party. Neither are very trusting and we discover the reasons for their difficulties in fully trusting one another. It is true in many relationships that sometime trust is based on our past experiences and not with the person in front of us. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Another good read by Garett Groves. What I love about his books is how well written they are and the characters are fabulous to read about. This one is a bit of a roller coaster with many ups and downs plus you add in a little bit of spice, it's a win win. The chemistry between these two will make your head spin. When you dislike someone so much but the sexual chemistry is explosive makes even the most minor disagreements seem like a hurricane come through. I am looking forward to see what is next to come. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.
This is a spicy roller coaster read. Jeff and Kile start off with sparks and it goes through the whole story. From disagreements to passion they run through them all. From the moment Lee came on the scene I couldn't stand him. Three characters that I really liked were Joel, Dylan, and Liam. Now those guys I'd love to see again. In my opinion they are the true driving force here. And Wade, what an upstanding guy. So much to work with. I can't wait to see where Garret takes it next.
This is the story of two people, a journalist and a tv presenter who clash live on air resulting in a serious meltdown but are brought together to produce a series to be streamed over the internet. This results in the two falling for each other but trying to keep their relationship a secret and the consequences when it becomes public. This is an excellent book. Really well written and it keeps you hooked right to the end. Definitely Garett’s best to date!
Clickbait is the first in a new series. Jeff and Kile start out as enemies that soon learn that they are a prefect match. Jeff losses his cool when interviewing Kile on National News and gets fired. He finds himself with a new job that may not be all that it is cracked up to be. Kile and Jeff find themselves not only falling in love but set up. This is a witty, intense and high drama read. I received a copy for an honest review.
Clickbait : Off the Record, book one by Garett Groves. I have become a fan of Garett Groves, I have loved every book of his that I've read so far and this one may be the best one yet! The story went by so quickly. I couldn't put it down! The characters are fantastic! Loved Jeff and Kyle! Can't wait to read more about them and their friends. The storyline and characters are so good I can't wait to read more. Definitely a must read! Going on my favorites list!
The plot and side characters made this an interesting read as I felt zip for Jeff and Kile. (Jeff felt like a prima donna with an inflated ego while Kile was in the business of Being Famous.) The stories saving grace, I felt, was the new one they tore Lee. (Yep, I cheered!) Jeff & Kile did seem to mellow as the story went on but I just didn't believe I'd really care about what happens to them to keep tuning in. Dylan rocked!!!
I really like enemies-to-lovers books and this one hit my book craving needs. The relationship between Kyle and Jeff starts off in an explosion, but when they are forced to work together the funny side comes out. I love characters that banter and quip and they had it in spades, the process they went through together made them each see the other in new light. It was a great read with an HEA spiced with sexiness.
Garett did it again. How it is possible that each book it's better than the last, I still don't know, but he manages it.
This is such an awesome read: the characters are fantastic, well developed and with a fantastic chemistry that jumps from the pages. I love the enemy-to-lovers trope, and Garett really creates a believable transition.
Steamy, funny, and captivating, this is, IMHO, the best book of Garett Groves (until the next one, of course!)
OMG! I originally received an advanced readers copy of this book but didn't get the chance to read it. So I purchased the book instead. I'm so glad that I did. I hadn't read any reviews so I had no idea what to expect. I'm loving the chemistry between Jeff and Kyle. Opposites do attract and they were explosive. I really loved their story. Can't wait for more.
