Series Kinley E. Roby, Northeastern University; Herbert Sussman, Northeastern University; Joseph Bartolomeo, University of Massachusetts; George Economou, University of Oklahoma; Arthur F. Kinney, University of Massachusetts Twaynes United States Authors, English Authors , and World Authors Series present concise critical introductions to great writers and their works. Devoted to critical interpretation and discussion of an authors work, each study takes account of major literary trends and important scholarly contributions and provides new critical insights with an original point of view. An Authors Series volumeaddresses readers ranging from advanced high school students to university professors. The book suggests to the informed reader new ways of considering a writers work. A reader new to the work under examination will, after reading the Authors Series, be compelled to turn to the originals, bringing to the reading a basic knowledge and fresh critical perspectives. Each volume
One of the sloppiest pieces of “scholarship” that I’ve seen in a long time. It seems as though Brennan read A Dance to the Music of Time once, then wrote his critical survey from memory. Multiple minor factual errors.
Delighted, some months later, to see Powell himself refer to this bit of dreck as a “drivelling volume by ... an ass unspeakable ... which in any case needs revision even if it had been properly done.” Carew advised Jonson that the only proper way to handle lousy criticism was to be silent. Probably true. But I am so glad AP didn’t take that advice, and I am here to say the badly needed revision has happened and still badly needs revising. The Twayne series board should be embarrassed that they let this lame pony not once but twice onto the track.
