A year after her high school graduation in 1933, Clair Blank's first four books in the Beverly Gray series had been published -- she was a published author at the age of 18. In 1935, she wrote The Adventure Girls at the K Bar O and was immediately asked by the publisher for two additional stories so that it could be made into a series.
Clair Blank lived in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She graduated from college, became a typist and secretary, and during World War II worked as a volunteer for American Women’s Voluntary Services, a group that drove visiting Army officers around locally. She married George Elmer Moyer, a welder, in 1943 and had two sons.
‘On their way to New York - and adventure!’ Beverly Gray wants to be a reporter and writer, Lois an artist, Shirley an actress, while Lenora simply wants to have a good time. Everything seemed possible when they graduated from college, but will their dreams be realised in the big city?
My copy of this book comes with adverts for Cherry Ames and Nancy Drew books on the dustjacket, and Beverly Gray is another all-American girl detective, whose life takes her from one mystery to another. This book is also a nice example of the career story, as Beverly and her friends have a few struggles, but find success, mostly because the men who saw their youthful promise in college now help them get their first jobs. Personally I find the details of the small apartment on Broadway and 1930s casual dating more interesting than the mysteries Beverly solves in this book, and would love to know whether small-town Jim, secret agent Larry, or man about town Roger is the one she will end up with.
Funny how, as a kid, I never noticed how much Beverly's success depends upon who she knows! This one is still a bit rough in the plotting department, but improving. I think the thing that's hardest to get used to is that there isn't one mystery solved in a short period of time, as we're accustomed to reading these days. Rather the story stretches over almost an entire year and is episodic, more in the manner of a modern day sitcom than a cozy mystery.
The newly-graduated Alpha Deltas move to New York to begin their careers. Well, at least 4 of them do..... Beverly wants to become a writer, Shirley an actress, Lois an artist, and Lenora is a bit undetermined but luckily she has a small inheritance to keep her going. There's always a big mystery and this time it involves jewel smuggling and - gasp - Arabs!
